The Legend of Crystal Valley

StaceyG"The Legend of Crystal Valley is a mini-epic adventure game with an eclectic mix of fantasy and sci-fi elements. Gather items, solve both environmental and inventory puzzles, and examine everything you see as you travel through over 150 locations, each just as extraordinary as the last.

legendofcrystalvalley.jpgThe main character, Eve, receives a note from her father asking her to visit his estate. After exploring the old farmhouse she discovers a portal that takes her to a fantasy realm known as Crystal Valley. A number of strange worlds collide here, leaving creatures such as dragons, witches, aliens and robots stranded in the most unusual of cirsumstances. Even more unusual is the fact that everyone seems to know her father! You'll run across a number of portals through space and time, magic spells and other oddities as you search for Eve's father and a way out of this strange world.

The gameplay sticks closely to traditional adventure fare. The mouse is your weapon of choice and allows you to take and use items, examine objects, and travel between scenes. The cursor changes color depending on which action you can perform, which is a nice user-friendly touch. Most of the gameplay consists of carrying out tasks and favors for characters in order to collect objects that solve the level. Eve has a knack for fixing an assortment of machines and you'll use this talent to solve several mini-puzzles along the way.

legendofcrystalvalley2.jpgAnalysis: While many games don't change much beyond what the demo showcases, The Legend of Crystal Valley isn't afraid to take you on a wild ride. You would never expect the many varied locations and bizarre characters you encounter given the modest starting location. The game has an ambitious storyline that works both for and against it. Mixing science fiction and fantasy is one thing, but to also include Eastern European mythology as well as references to the modern world is a little over-the-top, and the plot suffers from a lack of cohesion, especially at the end. However, the broad, complex scope motivates you to keep playing to see what will happen next, and the variety of worlds you visit makes you feel as if anything could happen.

The locations are quite compelling and beautifully rendered. The backgrounds, lighting and shadows are filled with detail. Traveling through impressive environments is what makes this game fun to play. Adventure fans will feel a bit disappointed with the slightly rough look and feel, as character animations are choppy and imprecise and Eve's default movement speed is agonizingly slow (hold the [spacebar] and she'll get a little spring in her step). Seeing as this was an self-financed indie effort, we can cut them some slack. There is no spoken dialogue (and a bit too much written dialogue), but it was originally intended for English speaking audience, so everything reads smoothly.

Although parts of its presentation could use a little polish and shine, The Legend of Crystal Valley delivers a wonderfully deep storyline and a great variety of locations that make playing from beginning to end an experience worth absorbing.

Hmm...but is it as epic as "Quest for the Crown"?

I was a little disappointed when I found out that it was a demo. It was incredibly well made, but the fact that it took me 15minutes to finish it before the demo ended was a bit upsetting =\

It's even epicker. :D

And Candi, the demo is very short compared to the game. The game is 9 chapters and 150 locations, while the demo has only one/two locations.

The demo ends when you complete the segment rather than giving you an hour of game time.

You know, this reminds me a lot of "The Longest Journey". Fantasy and science fiction is hardly an unusual pairing, at least these days, but you're right -- adding other established mythos smacks of trying too hard to be different. It's a good thing the environment is strong enough to carry it along when the plot falters from time to time. Definitely worth a look for fans of the genre. Maybe if enough people buy the game, Eve can afford to buy a new shirt that doesn't look like it was an unwanted Christmas gift from Grandma.

Looks very nice indeed. I love adventure games, so I really wanted to try this, but the Big Fish Games Stub setup stalls when I try to install. Is there any way to run it without that? (Why is that needed anyway? It'd be annoying even if it did work...)

JIGuest - the Big Fish Games loader is there because most BFG customers are not computer savvy, and it takes care of all the heavy lifting with respect to getting you up and running with a game download.

If you're having trouble with it, I urge you to contact customer support so they are aware of your issue. If you're experiencing trouble, chances are others are, too, and they may already have a fix for you:

I downloaded the installer again, and it got a little further this time, but now it aborts when installing (an error about not being able to put files in C:\Program Files, despite me selecting a different installation folder). I guess I'll contact them.

In any case, I wish they'd at least have the option of just downloading the game installer directly in stead of having to jump through all these hoops.

[Edit: This sounds like a Vista permissions problem, though I can't be certain -- I avoid Windows if at all possible. Make sure you have administrator privileges to install new programs. If not, you may need to change users. -Jay]

Screenshots look impressive..!

Anyone care to comment on approximately how many hours of gameplay we could expect for our $10?

Thanks Stacy!

gameplay hours/$$$ might be something JIG would want to include in their reviews of paid games (some are a gyp, and some are a heckofa value). This sounds pretty good, think I'll check it out.

I was very disappointed in the ending. Unless they plan on creating a sequel, the finale leaves too many unanswered questions.

Dave, I don't think focusing on gameplay length is such a good idea, because I the length of a game doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how good it is. I've played half-hour adventure games I'd have gladly paid for (if those particular ones hadn't been freeware).

I mean, say you've got an awesome adventure game that's exactly how you'd want it, except it only lasts for about two hours. That's short! Maybe important parts of the game even depends on its shortness, but regardless, you decide the game is TOO short, and start adding content for the sole purpose of making it last longer -- content you otherwise wouldn't have put in there. Would this make the game better? If the content actually added something of value, perhaps, but the game was already "perfect" before, so that's probably not the case. Otherwise it'd just be meaningless filler that would cheapen the game.

Also, Jay, you're probably right that it's a permissions problem, but the installer still should've installed where I told it to in stead of Program Files, right? Even if I solved the permissions problem I don't have much free space on that drive. I think I'll just wait and hear what Big Fish support has to say.

Just finished a few minutes ago. To be totally honest the game mechanics are basically find item A to solve problem B which gives you item C that fixes machine D which gives you item E to give to person F who shows you where to find item G and so on and so on. Sprinkled throughout are some fairly challenging brain teasers that involve manipulating levers, dials, buttons or what-have-you to open a door or obtain some needed object. Be advised, the game is so sparse on hints and feedback for some of these that you end up just clicking things randomly until you hit the right combination.

What keeps this from being a boring mouse-click drill is the beautiful scenery and engaging storyline. The real attraction of this game isn't so much the destination (the ending admittedly seems a bit simplistic for such an epic journey) as it is the ride getting there. You will never be *quite* sure what lies beyond the next click.

The plot gets a bit unraveled starting about midway through and Eve's development as a character is rather stunted given the buildup throughout the adventure. Many subplots get hung out to dry.

Technically speaking, character animation is clunky and Eve walks like she's in a daze, which is not so good considering how much she has to walk around. Use the spacebar!!

All told, though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't regret purchasing or playing it.

  • The tutorial is a big help in figuring out the cursors and general game function.

  • Right-click opens your inventory. Enter key will show hints: blue triangle is places you can go, green squares are people or things you can interact with, and yellow circles are things you can examine further.

  • Inside your inventory, the Diary will record conversations. It divides them up by chapter and character. You can review those and not have to have a conversation over again. But, remember that sometimes you need to go back and talk to characters again anyway, as they occasionally have new information for you.

  • Sometimes to use an item in your inventory, you merely have to double-click it. Other times, you have to drag and drop it to a particular place or person.

@Audra: Thanks! I will update the walkthrough.

@Tonya:

Did you pick up the flashlight off the ground in the work shed? It is on the right side of the room. Hit the "enter" key to get a highlight of the item's location.

@Shauna: The sleeping potion is

on the table in the tavern next to a man named Milan. You'll have to bring him a beer so he'll give it to you.

You'll have to go through all the steps in the walkthrough under the section called "In the Village." The sleeping potion is the last result of that chapter.

The walkthrough says Betty will ask Eve to talk to Armon. All Betty says is that the mayor is out of town. No matter how many times I click on her that's all she says. I can't continue without her opening the window.

@Tonya I agree with Barb, it sounds like you might be missing some of the farmhouse items that you need to take with you into the hole.

@cadeedad I will go back and take a look but I don't know why Betty the Maid hasn't talked to you about Omero. The only thing I can think of is that there is something in the city that you didn't do. Did you

go to the florist and receive a rose?

@Leanne - If you look at the column right outside the crypt, you're in the wrong place. Exit the scene about three times until you are standing back in the Magical Forest, at the very first set of columns on the path to the crypt. Almost back to the witch's house.

Hi gamers!

It took me about four hours to finish the entire game so not bad for a few bucks. The gameplay was clunky and it was a little aggravating to have to backtrack for things you may have noticed on the way through the first time around, but all in all not bad. I agree that the ending just pretty much stunk and I'm a little ticked about that, but otherwise it's worth whatever hassle it takes for some of you to download it. I had problems too. I know iwin.com also has the game but it has it's own game mgr just like big fish. enjoy!

@Tonya - the portal guardian is the black and red robot at the farthest end of the portal chamber. If you have talked to the giant in the portal chamber, the guardian is just to the right. You'll get a blue arrow at the right of the giant showing you how to exit that scene.

If you have the

medallion from Melvis, then you just need to go to the portal guardian robot, and then you can go to the city.

@zuzana0 - I will try! Unfortunately you can't just jump between chapters... one has to play the whole game through from the beginning in order to replay a puzzle like that.

Combine inside the inventory the fish with the sleeping powder. Talk with him and offer him fish to eat. Give him the combined fish and he will fall asleep. He said before in the conversation, that in his pouch is something, that will make you see. So grab his pouch and a potion will be given to you. Open your inventory and use the potion on yourselve. Go back to the crossroad and you will see, that now a third way is shining there. Go there. (Fish you get from the barrel at the fishermen's house before the bridge, the sleeping powder you have to take yourself from the guy in the tavern, after giving him a beer)

I am at the kales va and kales ra place. How do I reset the glowing shield so I can hit the buttons right?
I did the wrong code and for about 30 minutes I kept trying to redo it right.
Is there a way to make it go back to when you first start it and try again?

@witsinc: :( Sadly, I do not know of a way to reset the Crystal Valley puzzles to a "neutral" start. Exiting the level to go backward to the previous level has not done this, in my experience -- I tried with the sarcophagus puzzle.

Sounds like you're going to have to just randomly click till you get it... or you could start the game over with a new player and just speed through using the walkthrough.

Sorry I don't have more help for you than that.

I am having trouble getting into the boat. I have the rope, hook, and fish connected. Martin is standing on the dock, and I keep getting the message that Martin cannot hear me when I am "this small." I have tried several times to use the shrink spell to unshrink, as it were, and that does not help. Any ideas?

Score: 0 (0 votes) Vote up Vote down Report this comment Reply

@liz That part is kind of fiddly too. You need to

double-click to use telekinesis on the barrel, and then when it is up in the air, click on the platform. The barrel will fly over to the platform at that point.

@chemindefer

You need to un-shrink Eve. I can't imagine getting all the way through the Swamp that small, in fact... she walks so slowly! Double-click on the shrink spell in your magic inventory, and Eve should automatically go back to normal size.

@chemidefer
Try to go away from the dock. Then open the shrink-spell - There are two possibilities: Doubleclick the spell inside the inventory - that will use it with Eve - or just click it and then click it on Eve

Good luck, Kayleigh

I am so sorry, but I can't make those barrels land on the platform. I have double-clicked on telekinesis in inventory, on barrel, on Eve, but the only thing, that happens is the barrel going up in the air. Nothing happens when I click on the platform. I have placed Eve on the platform and outside the platform and in both places she lift her hands to make that telekinesis - but the problem is, that the barrels can't change direction and land on the platform.
Could you give me more specific directions, perhaps. I must probably be stupid, I think!

Thank you for the help. I used a combination of different answers and my own logic.
The sollution is, step by step:

• Eve must stand on elevator platform
• Double-click telekinesis in Inventory
• Click one barrel and Eve will take it in the air
• Click on small platform high up (and left for elevator) and barrel will land there
• Same procedure with the next 2 barrels - they will be put on top of each other
• All 3 barrels on small platform - Eve will go up with the elevator

If you look at the column right outside the crypt, you're in the wrong place. Exit the scene about three times until you are standing back in the Magical Forest, at the very first set of columns on the path to the crypt. Almost back to the witch's house.

And, don't forget that you can use the in-game hint system (hit Enter key on any screen) and look for a green square to highlight the berries.

I have been finding the plants for the witch and have been successful with the green ones (2) the rose however was the first one i found and picked with the blacksmith's glove but it did not go into the inventory. The glove too did not return to the inventory and the rose is no longer in the bush so I have no rose, no glove. I have tried going back to the blacksmith but of course he hasn't got the glove either. Have I really got to start a new game in order to solve this problem?

Apart from that, I am enjoying the game very much although being 70 yrs old my family think i'm rather strange!

Score: 0 (0 votes) Vote up Vote down Report this comment Reply

@dianne You're not strange, you're quite hip!

You don't need the glove to collect any of the three herbs for the witch.

When you use the glove on the thorny bush, it's just to clear it out of the way so you can pass by. The plant to collect in that area is at the front door to the crypt, at the left, and you can do it with your bare hands.

So, no, you don't need to start all over. :)

The puzzles are extremely simple; Myst or Riven will give you more of a challenge. Anyhow, the game does exhibit some beautiful graphics, though. If you are a neophyte to this genre of gaming, I would definitely pick up a copy, it is a quaint little distraction from the work-a-day world.

I was sort of suspcious when I installed it because of some cool looking desktop icon my icon was just the standard exe icon... if someone reads this.. please help ^^ I'd love to play.. (I'll check back often and post when I have it figured out.

Help... I cannot for the life of me find the red berries outside the crypt. I have been up and down the path, back and forth, tall and small. I've examined each pillar in each size. I'm about to give up completely.

Red berries - what I learned...even if you use the spoilers, you must complete all the tasks and conversations; talk to the lizard again.

did you find the dried fish? it's hanging from Martin's shabby little cabin.

i liked the game but the storyline sure did get pretty crazy at the end. otherwise, i enjoyed the game

I need some help. I gave all 3 of the bells to Bobo and I talked to everyone on that side of the village. I can't get him to give me the code for the music box and you can't just go and do it. If anyone else has figured out how to fix this problem I'd appreciate the help. Thanks!

Megan Flowers -

You might want to go back and talk to Bobo again. According to the walkthrough above of the comments

Bobo will sing a tune with notes that match the music box.
