The Clockwork Man

The Clockwork Man

JohnBThe Clockwork Man is a beautifully illustrated hidden object game from Total Eclipse. Set in a stunning steampunk world, you follow aspiring engineer Miss Miranda Calomy and her clockwork companion Sprocket as they travel from London across the seas and beyond. The adventure doesn't stray far from the hidden object standard, but the story and setting are exquisitely presented and the game itself a true joy to experience.

clockworkman.jpgAt the game's outset, Miranda receives a letter from her grandfather Cornelius, a scientist and accomplished inventor. Well, she received the letter days ago, but somehow it got lost in the disheveled mess she calls a home. What's a poor hidden object gamer to do? You guessed it, clean up the mess by finding items on a list! Once you locate the envelope you learn exactly what Cornelius needs and set out on your journey.

The Clockwork Man features several types of hidden object scenes that do a great job bending convention. The first type you'll encounter are zoomable levels where you can get an up-close view of part of the stage. You'll also get to see scrollable scenes that feature parallax objects gliding before your eyes. Use the controls at the bottom-center of the screen, the mouse wheel, or arrow keys to zoom in and out or scroll left and right. Apart from the hidden object scenes, you'll also encounter a handful of unique mini-games, all of which fit the game's steampunk setting very well.

clockworkman2.jpgAnalysis: First things first: The Clockwork Man is a beautiful game. Every item, every object and every scene is drawn with intimate detail, even the backdrops show a lot of love and attention. The game features a lot of voicework, and while I'm normally not a fan of this in casual games, Total Eclipse gets it right with surprisingly good actors. It all ties together into a neat package you can't take your eyes away from until you reach the end.

The hint system is worth mentioning, as this is usually one of the things that can make or break a hidden object game. Sprocket functions as a hint machine and he gets to equip four fun gadgets that offer a different way to find items. The only drawback is that each device uses some of his power, so the more specific the hint, the more power is consumed. Wait a while and he'll recover energy, but don't hold your clicks in the meantime. The Clockwork Man doesn't have a timer and you aren't punished for clicking too much, so feel free to explore the gorgeous scenery with as many button pushes as you like!

Now for the bad news: The Clockwork Man is a bit on the short side. For all of the meticulously handcrafted artwork, the beautiful scenery and stellar voice acting, you'll find it ends far too soon after just three enchanting chapters. It's a wonderful ride while it lasts, and the possibility of a sequel doesn't seem too far-fetched.

A beautiful atmosphere (and I'm not just saying that because I love steampunk), gorgeous settings, and hidden object gameplay that gets everything right. The Clockwork Man is nothing short of breathtaking on almost every front. The only crime the game commits is making you fall in love with it before leaving you after just three or four hours of gameplay.

Eh, John, somehow the review gets cut off and starts over again in the middle of the second paragraph. :P

[Edit: A bit of a copy/paste hiccup. All fixed, thanks for the alert. :) -Jay]

Great game! However, with that said, I do have a complaint. While playing attempting to play the demo, I encountered several problems. The first being that it is very slow to load new scenes after completion of previous ones. The next complaint is that the curser moves very slowly and querky. Finally, after completion of the scene where the boat is started, the game failed to load the next scene. I waited almost twenty minutes waiting for the next scene to load and then my time ran out. I must say that if this game is like this in the demo, I would be afraid to purchase it for fear that it would prove to be unplayable.

Hi! I got to play test clockwork man and have gotten it now that it's out. I had so much fun playing this game, I adore Miranda, and I want a sprocket for myself! I thought the game ran extremely smoothly even in the play test, heres hoping they make another!

The buy link doesn't work.

Also, clicking buy in the game goes to a different site, but buying it from there is not an option since they want my full address and phone number for no apparent reason.

Apologies, everyone, for the "full version" link being down! We're in contact with the developer and are working out a solution now.

The game is great but right now I am stuck at the cave and have found 6 tiles, and a round cylinder and have the mans hanky but can not get it to work and wonder what I am missing..there is no help there. I can't go on from there because of this.

I am stuck in the labryinth! How do you get out? I have two types of mayan tiles, 3 of one type and 2 of another, but can't figure out what I'm suppose to do with them! Help!
Love the game!

This is a charming and very pretty game!

I've just had one small problem:

Has anyone else noticed, after finishing the puzzle box that you get off the guy in the hotel, you're some how in -what I can guess is the basement… Finding items and trying to fix an unknown machine? (Which I later found out was some air conditioner type thing…)

Seems some of the story (And probably not a lot of it) skips...

I didn’t even get to find out what was in that puzzle box!

Has anyone else had this small 'hiccup' or is it just me…?

It's the only thing that's ruined it so far.

Hi _Kateish_!

Thank you for noticing the small glitch with the story flow.

What has happened is that an important cutscene that tells us both what's in the puzzle box, as well as how Miranda ends up in the basement was omitted from the latest game version.

We have fixed that in v.1.0.3 which will be released at our website tomorrow.

Please check out www.theclockworkman.com tomorrow for more information!

Thank you for playing our games!

Stuck in labyrinth! How do I get out? There is one tile missing, but I have hanky and round cylinder.

Thanks so much to Kayleigh for putting this great walkthrough together! :D

I'm in the labyrinth and only found 3 of one stone and 1 of another and the hankerchief??? help I've been through it so many times I can count the bricks.

Somebody please help me! I cannot find the Iron Dog Figure at the Crashed Zepplin. I've used every hint and cannot find it.

The Iron Dog Figure is way over to the left if I recall and right up front. It looks kindof like a very shortish dog on a flat little base. It's a medium gray color. That's as close as I can remember.

For all the ones that are still stuck on the cave.

And all the stones, ars put on place, but the last one. Stop looking for a close door. If you look at your map, and head to the beginning. You will notice a door on you'll left that is open and the room is not shown on your map. Inside is your last stone piece.

[Edit: Spoiler added ~ Kayleigh]

I am still stuck in the labyrinth.

Can't find the "scull"?

HELP

The labyrinth
Please have a look at the Screenshot, it shows the labyrinth and the positions of the items.

Greetings, Kayleigh

I am old...and I feel older after playing this game. I really like it allot, however, I can't get into the cave. I have tried to follow the directions. What do I enter for the hyphen's anything at all? And the Mayan Stones-what do we do with those? Help! G-Mom :~>

G-mom - Mayan Stones/entering
I'm not exactly sure where you are - you have the mayan stones, so you managed the labyrinth - are your stuck at this door or the next one? If you are stuck at the door to come out of the labyrinth, please have a look at the walkthrough (Spoiler: Chapter 3, Labyrinth) on top of the comments and also see the screenshot. When you are having problems with the next door (where you do have to use the Mayan Stones), than please use the spoiler Chapter 3 - Inside the temple, where you will find instructions about what to do, including a screenshot, showing the exact positions of each Mayan Stone

Hope that helps
Greetings, Kayleigh

My labyrinth diagram doesn't look like the one in the spoiler. I do not have the right hand section at all. Any ideas?

Do you talk about the diagram, that does not show it (yet) or have you been inside the labyrinth and there are just closed walls, no free parts to enter? If it is the first, than enter the labyrinth - it might be, that the diagram shows the rooms, when you first enter them. Im not that sure about this anymore. If you are inside the labyrinth and having closed walls, you have a major bug and should ask for support at the page, you purchased the game

Greetings, Kayleigh

Thanks, Kayleigh. With your help I figured it out. What a fun game!

I, along with 3 others have spent 4 days trying to get out of the labyrinth. We have come through, found all items and have placed the stones and skull in the places designed for them to be. Now the final thing is the handkerchief and the cylinder. They or it will not go in the slot remaining. HELP. I have 21 more days to play clockwork man and I do not wish to spend all that time trying to come out and finish the game. I want to be able to unlock and play hidden objects listed. I have little experience with games on the computer and I will say I really like this one, but I a frustrated. Thanks meme o

Cannot locate the last stone in the cave, can anyone help me with this?

I downloaded it and could not get it to start. It says I have to be able to contact Playfirst. I clicked ok thinking it would pop open my browser and it did not do that or open the game. How do I get it to open the game to begin with? I have a playfirst account. I dont buy my games from them but I have it.

Greetings, Kayleigh

I also am stuck at the labyrinth door...missing one stone and have been furiously clicking in every room....there seems to be one stone stuck on the lintel of a door possibly, but no amount of clicking will free it...so passed it by...now that I have the diagram of where the stones are, I will try (yet again) to find the last stone...Love the game and don't want it to end so soon!!! Or stop playing because I can't find that last stone!
Could not access the WT from here...but will keep trying.

I am stuck in the Labyrinth also, because I cannot find 1 last stone. Even after looking at cheats, I have been clicking each brick for 2 days and I am going insane. Other than this issue I love this game. I need to know where in the rooms are the stones not just what rooms they are in. Thanks
