CGDC5 update

Game Design Competition #5Gimme5gamesMochi MediaToday is the day! The deadline for our 5th Casual Gameplay Design Competition!

It's time to finish up those games and send your entry in to us before midnight tonight. Even if you have previously filled out an entry form, we still need your game SWF for judging purposes, so don't delay!

We have received only a few entries so far, and there's a lot of money up for grabs, so get your entry in NOW! :)

Please see the main competition announcement page for specifications and details about entering.

Yay! I've been a big fan of the CGDC for a while now. When can we expect to see the entries?

Thanks for your support, Shostie. :)

All the entries will go up at the same time, and made available sometime tomorrow—just as soon as we are able to test them all, and prepare the competition page to house them.

We'll post to the blog when they go up, so stay tuned! ;)

Well isn't this bittersweet... I have tickets to the Spurs game tomorrow but that means I can't play all the great games until Wednesday! Ugh I can't wait!

I can only imagine the amazing ideas that'll come from "upgrade" considering the incredible ones from the last competition!

This site is a breeding ground for new and innovative games.
A site that interacts with the developers and doesn't just host what ever game they can find is not only good for the site, high traffic, but also us gamers who are demanding more from our casual games than a match four or lame platformers.
Great work.
Let's have at those games!

I agree with you fourstrings, that's why I love this site. Not just the same old stuff...

I'm practically shaking with excitement! Well, figuratively, of course.

I can now say goodbye to all productivity in the next week...

Jay, I have two questions:

1. Will the games be displayed in the similar 'gameboy' format?

2. What is the theme of this competition? I somehow missed it.

Thanks a ton!

Yay its finally results time :) cheers Jay

Hi Helmaroc - no, there is an all-new UI this time made with DHTML instead of Flash to support variable sized games and MochiAds.

And the theme this time is "UPGRADE". :)

Ok, thanks.

I am GIDDY! I can't wait to see what has been entered. Someday when I have time, I am going to learn how to create games, so that all these ideas richocheting around in my head can come to life. Until then, I live vicariously through the games here at my home away from home.

Upgrade? So, will it be a DS-themed layout instead? :P
Only teasing.

Sounds good, since the last one was such a great success.

The game page is much different than all of the previous competitions. Jay worked his butt off getting this one all set up and done so it looks nice and works well. It turned out fantastic so Cheers to jay for all his hard work on these competitons!! ^_^ \o/ wooty tooty.

You forgot the "flip bam booty!"

Not that this game design competition will be bad, but I think it'd be better to leave a little more room between competitions in the future. (IIRC, CGDC5 was announced mere weeks after CGDC4 ended.)

I'd rather have these game design competitions be the exception rather than the norm, not only because the quality of the games will suffer if competitions are held too often, but I as a "casual gamer" will become more frequently "gamed out". I already experienced this to an extent during CGDC4; there were so many games coming one right after another that I just gave up and really didn't give many of the entries a chance. Perhaps this time give us two days or so to experience each game? I know it'll drag the competition out for a long time, but I think it would ultimately benefit the games themselves since it'll give everyone a chance to experience each one.

I dunno, my thoughts are kind of rambling at this point, but I just wanted to vent a little frustration over the competitions.

Actually it was CGDC4 that was on the heels of CGDC3. This competition was announced in January, the previous one ending in October of last year.

We're doing things differently this time around. All the entries will be released on the competition page at once (most likely sometime on Tuesday), and the competition period will last for 3 weeks. We will not be posting about each game on the main page of JIG, so you're free to spend as much or as little time as you'd like with each entry.

But your feedback is appreciated, and very astute. These competitions have worn me out, frankly. I think this will be the last CGDC for a long while.

Perhaps Jay needs an "Upgrade"... (that was terrible)

Midnight!!!
I am twitching with anticipation for this!
Seriously thanks for getting the CGDC rolling, this is a great concept and works out well for Casual gamers, Work is going to be sweeter when this is finally released.

Any chances of a sneaky peak of what the interface is going be like this time? there always creative.

I disagree with Simone Manganelli, I would love a competition every month. I certainly understand that that would task Jay and the judges too much, and it's not realistic right now.

But as a designer and a player, I think it's not unreasonable to have competitions often, and everyone benefits. If a particular theme doesn't grab your fancy, you can hold out for the next one. Also, people's schedules change all the time, and they may not be able to participate in a current competition, but would like to in the future (my present case).

Keep up the great work, Jay. These competitions foster great creativity and feedback, and everyone gets a chance to play a bunch of awesome games!

If you're not posting about the games, where will we discuss each one?

If this one is gonna be half as good as the previous two then, boy, are we in for a treat :)
