anikasodyssey.jpgJohnBAnika’s Odyssey: Land of the Taniwha is a beautiful point-and-click adventure by Tricky Sheep similar in style to Sprout or Samorost. In fact, it was designed and programmed by Jeff Nusz (Sprout), with art by Tom Robinson.

You begin with the innocent task of gathering water from the well. As a great eagle swoops from the sky and absconds with your rabbit pal, the bucket becomes a stool that allows you to jump the fence and begin your adventure!

Control is entirely mouse-driven and centers around clicking hotspots on the screen to enable various events. Your cursor will change when you hover over a clickable spot. To look around the environment, simply slide the mouse to the edge of the screen and it will gradually scroll in that direction. The game is largely exploration-based, so it's important to pay attention to your surroundings.

anikasodyssey2.jpgPuzzles are mostly confined to hunting for the next point to click or discovering which order to trigger the events. There are a few more traditional riddles to solve, however, but nothing too difficult. The game is heavy on charm and light on frustration, almost like an interactive storybook.

Anika's Odyssey manages to tell a simple but engaging tale with nothing more than images and sound. The visuals are absolutely beautiful, complete with layered backgrounds that give the illusion of depth. The music is equally enchanting and, when paired with the story of a young girl on a quest, conveys the rather innocent sense of adventure Anika must feel herself.

It's funny, it's cute, and there's a host of zany creatures just waiting to be discovered. Anika's Odyssey a little bit of storybook magic. Play Anika's Odyssey.

Comments (may contain spoilers)

Wow! The artwork is awesome especially the lizard and the blue troll!

Agreed. The artwork is wonderful and it's a fairly easy game. I really enjoyed it.

Okay, sorry for double-posting but I hadn't thought I'd complete it that quickly:
This is extremely well done, with immersive, imaginative backgrounds, fine animation and nice twists in the story. Short, but sweet. Very sweet.

Fun little game! =)

(PS: There's no Jayisgames referral on that Kong link!!)

Ooh, nice catch, Vault. Thanks. ;-)

That was a lovely game - beautiful artwork, nice ambient sounds, humour, easy enough for even me to complete...
I really hope to see more from the peeps who made this.
By the way, it's worth watching till the end of the credits...

Lovely game, as those above have already said. The artwork is great, and the level of difficulty is low enough to qualify as a truly casual game for me--yet not so easy that it's not interesting.

Argh. I must be having a stoopid day, as I can't seem to make it past the

image
lizard with his tongue out

That was wonderful. Very easy, but not mind-numbingly easy. Great sound, very relaxing, and wonderful Alice-in-Wonderland style world.

10/10!

It reminded me of Samorost more than Hapland though, and I love both of those games :)

d'oh! Seems to be the Jay Comments magic -- no sooner did I post that, that I got past it and right on to the end.

A very sweet little game :) I enjoy the simple and relaxing aspect of the game that limits the amount of time spent pulling my hair out in frustration. Add the beautiful artwork and this game is a treasure.

Thanks Jay! :)

JustMe- My day must be stoooopider! It won't even load up! I see the Kong Ant intro, Sheep thing, website 'n' such, the ball of twine, the bunny's feet, A FEW FRAMES of the actual game, then black... then it plays everything over again. And I really want to PLAY!!! Ah, I'll try again.

Beautiful game, very much more Samorost than Hapland, though largely easier than either.

I particularly loved the bit where you could

image
make the mountain man blush by kissing it.
So cute...

All I can say is wow...
That was fantastic, I loved it!
It reminded me of the never ending story, but that does not take away from the uniqueness of this piece.
It was the closest thing to a small piece of super milk chocolate I have seen in a while. Short, but oh so sweet.

Oh my... maximum cuteness.. even the loading progress was cute! ^^

An engaging and interesting puzzle game in a setting that feels like a combination of Dr. Suess and, of course, Alice in Wonderland.

I don't know what it is about Kongregate but every time I try to play a game there it kills Netscape! It's so depressing because they have some really great looking games.

Don't forget to blow the mountain man a kiss! That was a very cute game.

What a sweet and beautifully made game.

image
Anika goes after the thing she loves, and as a result she learns to fly ;)

Ah, I'm stuck at the

image
machine right above the troll. What do I do here? there seems to be nothing to click on except for the lever.

What a fun little story!

Very logical steps made this enjoyable for me. I like logic! Some point/click games I can't finish don't seem actually difficult to me, but simply not logical.

Sweet find.

Love the method for fixing the machine's cogs

Ahhhh! What an absolutely heartwarming game. Whilst I like games like De-Animator, where I can mindlessly gain satisfaction from steadily slaughtering advancing zombies, this beautiful game also satisfies my paternal instincts: I have a 9 yr old daughter who still needs her equivalent of 'rabbit pal' to get to sleep. She'll love this. :-)

Nice game! The only thing it needs is some good, mellow music, but the relative silence isn't a big deal and the sound effects are good.

By the way, Jihiro, my suggestion:
Use Firefox.

Two optional bits with adorable payoffs to add to the walkthrough above:

image
Click on the giant fisherman after you get past him.
image
Click on the mountain-man after he scares the eagle away.

Am I the only one that gets majorly annoyed at Kongregate's site layout, with the pointless chat window stuck on with their games?

Re: yow's comment "Love the method for fixing the machine's cogs" . . .

image
not unlike the Russian Cosmonaut's method for fixing the rocket in the movie Armageddon, so they could get back home! LOL! - - - sorry, I just happened to catch it on tv yesterday, so it was fresh in my memory ;)

This game was adorable - lurvved the bunny! My only question is,
image
where were the baby birds? Usually, when a large bird grabs prey and returns to the nest with it - it's to feed the hungry chirpers . . . but, there were no offspring hungrily waiting to devour that which had been dropped into the nest. (?)

Lucky for Anika, or her odyssey would have all been for naught!

Am I the only one that gets majorly annoyed at Kongregate's site layout, with the pointless chat window stuck on with their games?

What a good game. I loved the art of it and all the creatures in it. Really relaxing and I liked how the view moved with the cursor too.
(The chatroom beside it is distracting though.)

ummm... majorly annoyed with Kongregate's site layout?
Me personally, Chris? not so much. Only because I used to visit www.pogo.com once in awhile, and kinda enjoyed chatting while playing. It's not a new concept, and of course, given the game site's name: 'congregate' with a "K" - you almost expect it. ;) It doesn't appear, at a quick glance that you can close the chat entirely, but there are a few options in the upper righthand window - one of them is 'mute', so at least there's that.
Otherwise, just use a search engine to find the same game(s) you want to play at other sites, to keep yourself from going completely 'mad'!

Re: "Lucky for Anika, or her odyssey would have all been for naught!"

image
...and even luckier, for the wabbit! (that there were no hungry young'un, waiting 'back at the nest' for breakfast, that is!)

A lovely game. Simple, elegant, and the trolls and the

image
blushing mountain

were really delightful and made me smile. :)

Seriously, seriously beautiful, the gameplay is simple and the game, short. What more could anyone want? (I loved the trolls)

As jojo said, cuteness to the max! Such a great, simple game, I loved it. It wasn't exactly comparable to the all-revered Samorost though the graphics really were good. I love Samorost!!!

WOW. One of my fave point and click games, for sure. I loved the

image
blushing mountain
too, it was so cute! As the others up there so cleverly pointed out, delightful graphics and cuteness. However, I personally feel that Samorost is better. And, how is this game related to Hapland other than the fact that they are both point and click games? This was totally different from Hapland, not to mention the lack of stick figures.

Wow, what an interesting online game. I used to play a them a lot but I quit becuase it was too addictive. Hopfully I'm not starting again.

Chris: I too am annoyed by that chat window - it increases the loading time, slows down the page, and on top of that, every time it loads, it adds an unnecessary query to my firewall program. And then did I mention that it takes up a large portion of what supposed to be the game window? So, yeah, annoying.

There is a solution though. Use this link to load the game. It's from the same site, but without the annoying chat window and all the other unnecessary stuff. Purely the game, as it should be. :-)

How do you fix the cogs?

Love it!
My favorite: the "loading" visualisation - knitting the rabbit. Cute idea!

loved it :)

Very nice, made me smile all the way through, beautiful artwork, but can't help but think she should

image
go get the little red guy out of the tree hole she pushed him in.

If you wait long enough

image
on the "The End" screen, the goat goes rolling by on his rock. :)

so cute! a perfect example of casual gaming.

I really enjoyed this game. It was done very well and the artwork, as everyone else mentioned, was beautiful.

The only thing that bothered me was that I found it just a bit too easy. Otherwise, another great find.

Don't forget to kiss the mountain man (a creative touch which makes the game even more adorable)!
Also loved all of the great expressions from the different characters - too cute :)

Glorious game!

Reminded me what it was like to be a child.
Thank you!

Lovely game and interesting graphics. Hope here will be another game as cute as this one. Keep up the good work guys

@tape - fixing the cogs:

image
just click whereever you can, and see what happens;
otherwise, check the walkthrough

I loved at the end

image
I wondered "was it just a daydream, or did that really happen?" Then she spread her wings just to reaffirm that it wasn't all a dream. That's how I interpreted it anyway.

Truly excellent game.

Awesome Game. Very cute, reasonably easy and it's fun! Two thubs up! (I didn't even have to use spoilers!)

Am I being really dense? I'm stuck at the log - I know I'm supposed to

image
push the red troll into the tree trunk and cross the river while the others are rescuing him
but
image
they always get him out and get back to spin the log before I get through

What can I do?

What a lovely game and a very solid push towards how a simple and tenderly constructed game is balanced with a simple tale that you can really really enjoy as a story.

As you say, simple storybook magic.

and I thought the way the physical construction of the landscape works so well with the beautiful illustrations. It reminded me of being in a slightly more grown up 'Gruffallo' world.

Well done trickysheep, well done.

I love the game so far as well. I'm not sure if there is a glitch or if I'm just dense but I'm having problems

image
getting the cart to go up the bridge. Each time I click it, it just goes one step in one direction, then one in the other direction. Essentially back and forth.

Did anyone else have this problem? Or am I just missing the point. Any help is apprecitated.

Yet another woo yay. A game so easy even I can solve it without a walkthrough, yet not so easy that it's more of a storybook.

For those of you having trouble with the machine, have you ever seen the film "Office Space"?

Great game. I love games like this and Samorost, where the artwork is awesome and the adventure is really unique...and the puzzles don't take forever to figure out (like Hapland).

Regarding getting past the red troll:

image
You look in the hole in the tree, then when the red troll looks, you click on him and he falls into the hole - so you can't see him. Then the other trolls go to help and you can get across.

This game is fantastic. Short but very sweet! Well done trickysheep!

Krystalmaze: you missed one step:

image
You need to push the cart only to the edge of the bridge. (I think it needs only a single push in that direction). Then go back to the machine and try to move the bridge again: it will break, allowing you to access the lower grounds.
Good luck! :)

JohnB: you compared this game to Sprout - I just found out that this comparison is closer than what it looks like! Jeff Nusz, the creator of Sprout, is listed as "director" in the game credits. I think he was more involved than that though. The scrolling, the identical graphic presentation and gameplay made this game almost a sequel to Sprout, giving it the magic charm that made the first one a winnng success! :-)

One way to not have to watch Kongregate's YouTube-grade chatters in action:

Click the question mark icon in the upper right. You'll look at a peaceful, static help tab instead.

so cute

image
she goes after what she loves and learns how to fly

I like the character development: in the beginning, she sets down her rabbit while she fetches water, then at the end, she

image
keeps hold of it while fetching the water.

I find character arcs quite rare in casual games.

I need help at the machine. I don't see any "sparking cogs" so I cant get pass it. Please help.

I got it, no response needed

очень приятная позитивная игра)
don't forget to kiss the mountain man after he helped you)
from Russia with love!

what a best game

A very sweet and charming little point and click adventure. Not too hard, which is good because it's a great game for kids too (though I admit I did get stuck once). In more complicated games, the ability to click on stuff that really doesn't help you progress but just gives you a fun animation can drive me nuts, but I liked it in this one.

If you watch through the end credits, you get a little bonus animation:

image
the goat you drove off the mountain path, still rolling over the hills balanced on the boulder

This game was great. I was smiling the whole time.

Doggone it. New computer here, everything is working and updated, yet for two nights in a row I get nothing but a black screen with a ball of yarn (and something at the end that moves), along with this underneath: 3504/OK. Does anyone know what's going on? I even registered and got into chat where I was encouraged to d/l Firefox.
SIAM, thank you SO MUCH for that link! That was nice of you. I appreciate any advice.

My apologies, y'all. It's working now of course, since I posted above. Thanks, tho, cause I Jay's team and/or committed fans (like myself)would've responded.
Jay, I need to find a way to 'talk' to you about a contribution to you and your site, other than using PayPal and...well, I'd like to give a little more than I would by the method in a prior post (where, I can't remember). Is it possible to get in touch wih you so I can send you some bucks? Thanks!

i can't get past the cogs there's nothing to click but the lever!!!!!!!

Congrats on a job very well done! really loved the game!

Highly likable.

That game was probably one of the first ones (besides Grow) that I have not relied on a walkthrough.

10/10!!!!!
