Bart Bonte's entry into the second Casual Gameplay Design Contest (CGDC #2), Chicken Grow, once again showcases the mosaic-like artwork we have come to love from games such as The Bonte Room, Free the Bird (from CGDC #1), and the recently reviewed Loose the Moose. The game centers around one impatient-looking chicken, waiting for you to feed and water it. Doing so requires you to solve two puzzles—one to turn on the water and the other to release chicken feed from a machine.
Given only a month or so to design and submit Chicken Grow, it is understandably shorter and less complex than most of his prior games. Unfortunately, the trickery and originality that we have seen before from Bart did not carry over into Chicken Grow. The puzzle to unlock the feed machine is just a flash implementation of the famous Klotski puzzle, which requires 81 moves to solve—if you know exactly what you're doing. Someone could easily spend half an hour (or more!) moving those maddening little blocks around before finding the solution. The water puzzle shows more creativity, but is rather short and leaves the player hungry for more.
Despite the weak gameplay, there are things to like about Chicken Grow, such as the artwork and the atmosphere. We're always glad to see games from Bart Bonte, and we hope to see another for our third CDGC coming up. Play Chicken Grow.

Beat it! woo!
Only reason I stood a chance is because I happen to have one of those slide puzzles at my desk. I bought it at a Cracker Barrel actually. Happens to be one of the hardest wood puzzles I have ever seen.

Water puzzle too easy, grain puzzle too hard. Still, I managed to find a solution to the grain puzzle online...

I agree that 1 puzzle was too easy and 1 was too hard.

thanks otherBill-- in my opinion a 91 step puzzle is too much for a short game like this......

Boo Hoo I have waited all day for the next release, and ends up I already played it last week! ;-(

Besides the water puzzle, which was fun, this game is a disaster. The sliding block puzzle has been done to death and is really freakin' annoying. And this game has nothing to do with "grow" at all.
Posted by: Brandon | March 2, 2007 2:09 PM
i agree with cc and maddogmadsen! this puzzle came out a while ago on LazyLaces and i didn't much like it then. short games like this should be some frustration overcome with a good "AH-HA!" not a long grind like this slide puzzle
Posted by: Ruka K. | March 2, 2007 2:15 PM
yes I beat it thanks for the puzzle help OtherBill.
Yeah I agree what does the game have to do with grow?
Posted by: Link | March 2, 2007 2:15 PM
whoa! bug alert! don't ask me how i did it, but i managed to slide one of the 1x1 pieces on top of a 1x2 piece. for whatever reason, the 1x2 piece was unmovable prior to the discovery (as in, it wouldn't budge, even though there definitely was room to move). somehow, i accidentally slide the piece on top of it, and it just went there. so now i have three 1x1 holes to work with.
and it's still no easier. :P

That sliding puzzle was annoying! but i did it!
Posted by: theprogram00 | March 2, 2007 3:27 PM
Grain puzzle has a bug. I managed to get different pieces stuck without being able to move them and other pieces could move over them. So it's not only extremely hard to solve, but can also get you upset when it gets stuck while solving, and there is no other way to reset it than reloading the game. Bad!

Has anyone else noticed Bonte's apparent new fascination with bird games?

I agree with most of the feedback...water puzzle too easy and block puzzle too hard. I've never been a fan of the block puzzle -- maybe it's because I never was able to 'solve' the Rubiks Cube.

The grainagrow keeps glitching up on me!!
Posted by: jboy | March 2, 2007 5:03 PM
Where is the grow?
Posted by: FelixBat | March 2, 2007 6:53 PM
fun, but the block puzzle took too long and there was no reset button to reset it back to start it again.

Goodness me! It's one of those games they had on my old windows 98 computer (It started with a K... I think) The water doesn't take long but is fun, the slidy thing, not so much. :P
Nice help otherBill

Nice graphics and fun to play! Solved the water puzzle quickly, the grains was got me busy for some time, very difficult, but solved it in the end. Overall, nice and fun game.
I don't see why some people think this has nothing to do with 'grow', common it's how to grow a chicken :)

if you're stuck on the sliding puzzle...
Posted by: LordMagin | March 3, 2007 5:29 PM
Oops, I mean the grain puzzle. But I guess you would have figured it out by then.. :]
Posted by: Shinta | March 3, 2007 11:31 PM
Agreed with a bunch of other people -- the water puzzle is super easy, the grain puzzle ridiculously hard even AFTER
Posted by: Chrysanthemum | March 4, 2007 6:51 PM
I have to give this one a big thumbs-down. A flash implementation of a sliding block puzzle from sixty years ago isn't the kind of thing that I'm looking for in this competition. Even the other puzzle wasn't original, I've seen similar things before.

the food is too hard to figure out. it should be easier. they should let you have a farm and have more chickens USE THIS FOR THE FOOD PART

there was a bug with the grain puzzle....
Posted by: Anonymous | May 30, 2007 8:35 PM
i was dissapointed with the final animation. you take all that time doing the second puzzle just for that. very dissapointing!
Posted by: beth | June 9, 2007 5:43 AM
i didn't like this game as much as others. you do that puzzle that takes an hour and all that happens is a chicken lays an egg.
Posted by: maddie | June 14, 2007 6:58 PM
Wow! my brain hurts! I think this was the hardest sliding puzzle I've ever done. I took about 40 minutes of pain to find out the solution, and I only found the tape on the floor in my second try. Good puzzle, anyway.

OMG i made it:D but the grain droppep in left side^^ in stead for right side

Hmm… most of this game was the Klotski game. :(
Posted by: threebean | July 5, 2007 11:29 PM
wait, so this only took a month or so to code, but I swear I played this ages ago, and the comments for it date back to march...
WTH?
Posted by: Heff | July 7, 2007 3:11 AM
I finally finished the dang game, and so what if a majority of the game is KLOTSKI, some of us may never have seen or heard of KLOTSKI, fun game anyway, but man that slide puzzle was something else or what?
