Games for the Brain update

JohnBGames for the BrainGames for the Brain is a delightful collection of short, fun and challenging mini-games playable right from your web browser. When we first featured Games for the Brain it had a smaller selection of games, but thanks to a few updates the site now hosts nearly 40!

While only loosely brain-oriented, all of the games on the site manage to tickle the gray matter in a different way. You get an IQ score for each game, but unfortunately it isn't cumulative and doesn't carry over between titles. Still, for a quick brain-related fix, it's a well-designed site with a wide variety of content.

Play Games for the Brain

Here's a quick breakdown of a few of the new games:

Counterfeit - A "spot the difference" puzzle. Two images are shown, you must click the areas that are different.

Guess the Colors - A simplified version of Mastermind where you must use simple clues to guess the position of the colored pegs.

What Did I Search For? - Decipher the clues and see if you can figure out what the search was for. Similar to Gwigle.

SpeedType - Type the words as fast as you can as they fall from the top of the screen.

On a side note, Philipp, the game's creator, also has a collection of over 700 avatar sprites he has made available under the Creative Commons license. Perfect for instant messaging icons, forum avatars and much more.

And it would have been just perfect with the cumulative IQ score. I was so excited to brag about mine. Still fun though.

I will see what I can do about a cumulative score!

Sorry if the games are slower than usual today, there is a peak on my servers right now (highest CPU usage this month). Maybe it's also connected to above link.

If anyone has games that might fit to the site, btw, please feel free to contact me, we might be able to work out something...

does that say 'jay is sour'?

what's wrong jay, are you sour??

hahaha yes, I must have been chewing some Adam's sour orange gum that day. :p

Agh. I'm addicted to rotate. I wish it would get harder so I can stop ;]

Neither can Safari.

Wow, I played this a long time ago. I thought JIG had already done it. Games for the brain is a very fun site.

Aloloo - We have already mentioned it, as the review indicates. We first reviewed this collection of games back in 2005. Philipp has added several new games to the site since then, and since it is such a great collection of games, we felt it deserved another mention.

I didn't really think much of it, to be honest. Whilst the concepts were nice, many of the games were not very challenging.

the few I tried were really easy. also, I found the scoring thing confusing. for example, in dragger... every time you complete the puzzle you got an increase in your IQ score, but it didn't tell you how many times you had to complete the puzzle to get a "final score" so to speak. After 11 rounds I was bored with it, but wasn't sure if I had to keep playing or if it just went on forever.

A good concept though. It's nice to see some "brain" games as they are my favs.

These games are fun, though for some reason the dhtml stuff bugs me. It just doesn't have the same responsiveness as flash. mad props for actually building games this way though.

For more brain games, I'd like to shamelessly plug my site: http://www.lumoslabs.com :)

Cheers

Hmm, I never felt this way about DHTML, I actually always felt it loads a bit faster. Of course, advanced graphics stuff is better left to Flash.

Whoops, thanks Jay. Please excuse my ignorance.

What's with the bonus room? I don't get it.

philip. how often do you update the pictures in rotate, or does it search flickr and pick random images?

Rotate seems a bit broken - I went through about five pictures, and was more and more sure each time that the solution was correct, the last few times even getting several people to verify that not a single square was anything but right, rotating each one to demonstrate this, and still got them "wrong." Annoying.

I rock at guess the colours. :-)
