JohnBFlash developer and blogger LUT! has a few unique point-and-click adventure games just begging for your attention. They're short, moderately difficult, and one oozes style while the other tries to scare the ActionScript out of you.

Darkness Episodes 1 and 2 - The Darkness games put you in the role of a girl who wakes one night to answer a knock at her front door. darkness.pngA black hand engulfs her and the next thing she knows she's back in her bed and doesn't remember a thing. Upon investigating she finds a few things are a little... different... in her home. No spoilers here, but the plot twists in several directions while taking the time to spook you with some chilling moments. Follow the title screen's advice and turn up the speakers to really get sucked in.

There's an interesting feature where the girl will get frightened and "PANIC!" will flash on the screen. Press the space bar as fast as you can to keep your cool. If you don't, it's Game Over. It really keeps your senses on alert.

The first episode of Darkness is played out entirely in first person while the second shifts to a third-person view. The puzzles in both installments are fairly straightforward, but part two offers a little more challenge.

Tomb of Doom - This room-escape point-and-click game really stands out because the characters and scenery are made entirely out of plasticine, the clay-like substance used to make Wallace and Gromit. tombdoom.jpgYou play a Gumby-esque character who falls into a mysterious tomb while taking a walk. Using the items found inside, you must fend off giant scorpions, unlock doors and investigate strange statues as you search for the exit. It's sort of like a light-hearted Indiana Jones adventure with a few quirky quests to keep you from getting too serious.

Solving the puzzles in Tomb of Doom isn't too difficult, but navigating through the maze of doors and nearly identical rooms can be confusing, even with the map. It's a short play, but it's great to see this rare form of animation used in a video game.

The games on the LUT! website are great diversions. The Darkness episodes are especially atmospheric and can easily swipe an hour of your time without you even realizing it. Play.

As a side note, the LUT! website has a few pop-up ads, many of which open when you leave the site. Be ready.

Thanks Bonman for sending these in!

You need one more thing....

Do you have --

the key to the exit?

If not --

it's in the Nurse's station -- click in the corner below the jars -- what item in your inventory hasn't worked at all (in both Darkness 1 & 2)

If so, then Storeroom spoiler --

open your inventory - what three things could make a fishing pole? Take the fishing pole through the exit door and into the stairwell. Go down a floor and viola! There are the keys to the storeroom

Here's my favorite adventure game of all time -- Grim Fandango. It's not clay-mation but it's different. It's LucasArts homage to the Day of the Dead celebration and the movie Casablanca. All rolled up into one! Wonderful plotline, hilarious dialogue, and a supreme soundtrack. Recommended to all "point-and-clickers" out there!

Grim Fandango was an unforgetable game. Probably the last great from (pre-LetsMakeAllOurGamesStarWarsThemed) LucasArts, wich gave us many great point-n-clicks, of wich my personal favourite (and the favourite of alot of other people too) is Day of the Tentacle! Funniest game ever! Though the Monkey Island series was also classic. And The Dig was absolutely amazing, though quite different from other LucasArts games as it was more sci-fi and less humour.

The old days...

waahoowaa - Not sure if you'll check back here, but in case you do..

If you want to play any of the original Point n Click Lucas Arts games on XP, I highly recommend downloading a program called SCUMM VM.

Once you've got it, it'll load any old Lucas Arts games (and some non-Lucas Arts) that were built on the SCUMM system.. Games like Indiana Jones & The Fate Of Atlantis, DOTT, The Dig, Full Throttle (classic!), Loom (amazing too), etc..

Just do a search on Google for SCUMM VM, n you should find it quite easily. Also works on OS X for any Mac-owners who want to re-live these old games too :).

As for Grim Fandango, I managed to get it working on XP SP2 a while ago.. But I can't remember how to do it now for the life of me. Sorry! Try Google :).

Alright, stubbornes figured it out. The reason I can not access the Inventory is because for some reason my cursor is off center. I must place my cursor, not on the item, but rather a bit below and off the button, then I can access inventory, scroll thru etc. Wierd but workable.

This game author seems to like the "jump out and scare you with a screech" trick. An otherwise very clever game is marred by including cheap scares (for instance, the end of Tomb of Doom).

Other than that, the popups really annoy me (especially since one seemed to freeze IE for a few minutes) but these games were fun.

Could someone help me?
In Darkness 3, where you

spray the coke at the eyes

, nothing much happens. The eyes don't appear until right before the ghost does. Then I button mash (well, space-bar-mash) like crazy but it never works.

After a few times of restarting me at that part, the game kicked me out and I had to do it all over again.

Walkthrough for Darkness: Episode 1 and Episode 2
Hi guys, it's been a while since I wrote a walkthrough...

Once again, spoilers. Continue at your own risk.

Darkness: Episode 1

1. -Ding Dong!- Here you have two options: go outside, go downstairs, and open the front door, or you can click on your desk and input "skipintro".
2. You regain your focus in the starting room. Here, click on the left drawers twice for a pair of rubber gloves and a flashlight. Get the video tape on the table. Then leave the room.
3. Click on the light at the bottom of the screen to enter the bathroom. Here, pick up the red towel and use it on the misty mirror. You'll see Darkness (that creepy woman). Turn around after the short gasp. You'll notice that you knocked the soap bottle over and you'll see a key. Pick it up, then turn to the toilet.
4. At the toilet, use the rubber gloves to pull out the treasure key from the toilet. Flush it. Then put the toilet paper on the roll, and a hand should slam right into the shower door.
5. Move to the door. When you open it, you'll notice that there's hair sticking out. When you click on it, smash space as fast as you can to panic, for Darkness is trying to kill you!
6. If successful, you should arrive at a scene where the door is closed. If you didn't finish something, then Darkness will still be there. Or if you've been following this walkthrough, the shower should be empty (right?) and there will be a shower faucet on the ground. Pick it up and leave the bathroom.
7. Go back to the starting room and use the treasure key on the trunk o' stuff. Get the candle. Leave.
8. Use the silver key from the bathroom to unlock the Master Bedroom's door. Inside, use the shower faucet to open the cabinet below the TV (kinda fishy) and play the video tape you have on the VCR.
9. Press play, then you'll see a view of yourself in the room. Click under the bed, and once again you'll have to smash space as fast as you can. This time it's slightly harder because Darkness is really close this time. Once it goes away, click under the bed for a key. Use the key to unlock the drawer underneath the mirror. Take the box of matches. Leave.
10. Use the matches on your candle (in your inventory, combine matches with candle and not the candle with the matches) and while you're holding the lit candle, walk downstairs. You'll see Darkness's face.

To be continued...

Now on to Episode 2... This game is slightly harder. Couple things:

1. You can run past Darkness without being caught in a room.
2. The lights will flicker in your room when Darkness is coming.

Darkness: Episode 2

1. After a series of talking to yourself, you'll find yourself in a.... antiseptic environment. Click on the red item to turn on a light.
2. That was the emergency lights for the hospital? WHAT HOSPITAL? Anyway, get the one item that's NOT covered in blood, the scissors. Then enter through the two doors.
3. In the hallway, enter Ward B's door. On the right corner, you'll see a plant. Cut the plant with the scissors to get a wooden nickel. Next, open the curtain directly next to it, then open the silver cabinet. You'll find a note, "Ehehe, I hid it in the third red bottle on the right". Go left until you reach another corridor.
4. Enter Ward A. Inside, open the third curtain, and click on the silver cabinet. You'll find a ball of red yarn. Leave.
5. In the left corridor, enter the Pharmacy. Inside, light your candle with the matches to read the notices on the left bulletin board. You'll find a "To-Do List". During this time the light rod on the ceiling will fall. Pick up the rod. Next, open the third red bottle on the right to find a key. Leave.
6. Get REALLY SERIOUS HERE. Go down the corridor and you'll find a grandfather clock. Input the key, and you'll hear a scream. Go right, and pick up the fire extinguisher while you're at it. Enter the operating room.
7. Nothing here. As you leave, Darkness will make her appearance. Enter Ward B, and hide in one of the curtain-covered rooms. When the lights flicker, that means that Darkness will come into the room. Be sure about your decision, because the one curtain that she lingers around the most is likely to open on its own. If you're caught, you must panic (meaning, smashing the space button as fast as you can). When the lights are back on, enter the operating room.
8. In here, enter the closet on the right. Click on the white coats to open a hiding spot. Pick up the hangar that falls off. Note: there's a chance that Darkness will walk in here. If she does, then hide behind the coat rack. Next, use the flashlight to bash open the one spot on the wall that's in a different color. Get the egg-shaped stone and the key. Leave.
9. Go back to the left corridor. To decrease chances of Darkness appearing, go through the lobby corridor and not the Wards. Use the key from the wall to open the doors straight ahead.
10. Inside, use the wooden nickel to purchase a spoiled can of LuT! cola. Enter the room with the stairs on the left. Go downstairs, to find a dead end. You'll spot a pair of keys at the next floor. To fetch it, combine the hook with the yarn and combine the yarn-covered hook to the rod. With the newly made fishing rod, get the keys. Head to the Pharmacy.
11. Note: Darkness might appear in the hallway. In the pharmacy, use the keys to open the room straight ahead. You'll find a bottle with a cork. Pour the cola into the bottle to get the cork out. Take it with you.
12. Act fast here. With the cork in hand, head back to the hallway with the vending machine. Insert it into the up-and-down buttons next to the elevator. Enter it once it opens. Click on the "G" to the ground floor. And do it quickly.

To be continued...

I believe that someone already made the walkthrough for Episode 3. Good luck surviving!
