From Ben Leffler of Australia comes this dark and foreboding tale of the macabre that will surely send chills down your spine. One part Flash point-and-click adventure and one part interactive narrative, Exmortis 2 is the sequel to the 2004 game of the same name. It continues the story one year after the events of the first tale came to fruition.
If you haven't played the first Exmortis game, you may wish to play that one before continuing here, as the rest of this review may spoil the experience.
In the first game, you play as a man who wakes up in the woods without any recollection of how he arrived there. He makes it to a nearby abandoned house for shelter only to discover it is filled with dismembered bodies and blood all around. The house also appears to be haunted by evil spirits, which you learn are the Exmortis. Additional information uncovered tells of their leader, Lord Vlaew, a powerful being that once ruled over Earth but has since been banished for eternity to the spirit realm.
Over time you learn that these evil spirits desire a return to their former selves and therefore must kill five (5) innocent souls and mark the bodies with the symbols of the Exmortis to do so. They also need a soul-bearing human to become "The Hand," one whom must act as a bridge between realms for the Exmortis to pass. You realize at the end that you are the Hand, and have just played an important role in opening the gates and unleashing the Exmortis to wage their war against humanity for control of all the Earth.
A year has passed since that ill-fated day and billions have been slaughtered at the hand of the Exmortis as the horde swept across the Earth covering it in a crimson hue. Only one survivor remains: you. And as you flee the scene of the last devastating raid by the Exmortis, a dark figure passing in the distance follows and puts his plans in motion.
Analysis: Ben has created a feast for the senses, wrapping commercial-quality audio and visuals around a well-developed story to produce an immersing and entertaining interactive narrative. And it's an amazing feat for a single Flash developer. I especially enjoyed the attention to detail in the story elements that appeared at various points throughout the game within the many pages of a diary, newspaper clippings, and other written works. Although reading the story elements is not necessary to complete the game, the entire game play experience is indeed enhanced by Ben's excellent narrative. Also noteworthy is Ben's implementation of chapter checkpoints that the player returns to if a mission is failed while playing the game. Never was I set back far enough to make the experience feel frustrating at all. Overall the game is an excellent example of good interactive design. Click.
If you get stuck there is already an Exmortis 2 walkthrough available, written by Ben himself.

Comments (may contain spoilers)
how do you get in the car?
what do you do after the cellar part?
The game was truely a great game comparitively speeking of course. Reading through this forum I have seen stabs taken and what not, but I would have to say it is one of the best walk through internet based games I have played. The puzzles were a bit easy, but the story line really did help it along. I like the reading, but some are to lengthy, maybe disperse them a little bit for the third, you know, learn a little bit more over the entire game. Also, maybe lengthen out the playing area. It was much better in the second than in the first, but still, very confined. Over all though, great job, will definitely play other titles by Ben.
please help me on the 5 light thing i cant do it help me as soon as you read this!!!
Logical ending issue

that was scary to scary.. i didn't finish it lol
hats off to leffer!!
its a good game, but the ending was rubbish...

better ending needed
and that thing in the crawling tunnel made me jump!! :P
That was an awsome game! make another!!!
Fantastic games! I was terrified and on the edge of my seat! Finally a game that requires more than just the ability to stare blanky at the screen and click! I wish I had more thumbs to put up!
I need to know if you can find the final page of the Diary in the Bedroom =)
how gun works?
Spoiler!, the cool spoilers anyway!

HELP ME!!!! i cant get out of the church
To get out of the church. Go in the room and read the book until the back cover! Then go out the left door!
And I got scared when I went inside that crawlspace
I Think that was Ex Mortis when he poped out!!=S!
help with the 5 lights plz
the game was good

just a thought, but for all those who have read the diary of that one dude who lives in the ranch, could it be possible, that you are joe? the dude who ran away to get food? it never really told you that he died, unless you are able to find the last page. But, just a thought.
also, can someone explain this whole story? (1st and 2nd) got kinda confused....
For anyone who has troble with the sudoku game here is the combo

Inorder to leave from the beacon

How the heck do you find the dagger...thats whats giving me problems I just can't find it!!!!
nevermind, just read HIS walkthrough if you get that lost, I was gonna play purgatory but I've had enough scares for the night, you can find the link here.
I have read through everyones reviews, I still dont understand why everyone likes this game, you dont back it up with anything...it requires no skill...anyone can solve it...its a point and click, and the good storyline? come on folks, a good storyline cooperates with the game, is not external, i really wish he included more hints to solve the game within the diary....it would have given the game the third dimension it was lacking. It already had good graphics and the clicking aspect but it had no difficulty, no depth, no real chance of challenging a players mentality outside of clicking on obvious spots in the rooms.
i'm a bit confused on the light thing. and before i got here, when i saw SACRIFICE, did i kill myself ?
ok i finished the game. i really liked it. but i kind of liked the first one a little more. by the way, i didn't really understand the ending for this one, what gift was he talking about ? and what was i helping him do ?
omg!!! i know why Lord Vlaew shot himself at the end!!! he said as a gift to you "One Quick Death"!! the death was him !!! that was the gift to you!! he new you didn't want him arount to take over the earth!!! i think that's right!!!! hope so!! if it's not oh well!!! i tried my best!!! i didn't even get to the end yet!! lol!!!
wow what a great gift >__> a quick death...if i was there then as soon as i wouldve heard him confessing that he is lord vlaew i would shot him in the head and then stabbed him with the dagger and ran like hell :P
I just stumbled across both these games tonight and I gotta say, nice job. It keeps you hooked and you find yourself reading every word and checking every little thing. The 2nd seemed easier though, and I think they would be better if there was more thinking involved or puzzle to figure out, but still, great job. Keep em coming, they're entertaining. One question though, with the exmortis being sent back through the portal or whatever, and basically the human race being annihilated, what does Vlaew really have left to rule over?
ok, there is a lot of people that are confused with the 5 light thing... ok.. this is how you do it... click on what you think is the biggest light, then the second biggest, then the third, fourth then the fifth biggest (smallest). then go from the smallest light, second smallest, third smallest, fourth then the fifth smallest (biggest).
omg!!! i finally finished!! it was so freiken wierd!!! k so at the end Lord Vlaew pronounces Mr. Hanny Mr. Hannay!! funni!! and also his mouth is moving when he isn't talking that so stupid!!! i think the quick death was that he killed us!!! it was fun but really freaky!! Ben Leffler, you did an awsome job at making this game!! thanks for making it!! it was really fun!!
that was stupid how at the end he died. ughhh. my sister was doing this with me and she`s nine. it was hilarious to see the expression on her face when the girl crawled at you in the crawl space. bahaha. fun fun. it wasn`t even scaryy. my sister said it was stupid to. but yeahhhhhhh.
i loved your game.
but yeahh..
the ending was like.......idk......POINTLESS!
stlll loved it :]]
my friends and i were scareddd
Pretty good game.

Dang.
Great game.
Scary.
I tunred the music off so I didnt here anything.
=]
OMG! I nearly peed myself! I was so scared I have a tummy ache now. I do get scared easily in games, though not movies for some strange reason.
I can't believe an Australian made that, we never make cool stuff but now I can be proud. Meanwhile when do we get to see the movie that will surely be made based on this series?
I just love a game with depth to it's plot. It's so well thought out and even though the game itself is simple the effect is great even though the creatures had the cut out lameness to them.
Gosh that was good. Midnight was a bad time to play this now, I'm so scared I won't sleep but at least when I do it'll be vivid.
The newspaper clippings were my favourite part...no wait the families diary entry of the Exmortis' progress was my fav. Or maybe the best part was the lack of any disturbing speeling mistakes although I did notice he said 'too' instead of 'to' but whatever at least it wasn't an Ikea instruction manual.
Gosh I loved that. I'm all shaky still. I loved the desperation when the red sky approaches. I got scared I was all "F***, F***, F***" just like the script.
Oh and as a side note I played the first and second ones back to back and ended up thwocking myself in the face 3 times after getting frights. Not happy. Also my boyfriend threw a sock at me for squealing in terror. I am such a scaredy cat.
Way too cool!!!! I have played Exmortis #1 and #2 and can't decide which one was the better. I LOVE this type of game and i hope we will be seeing another and another and another sequel to Exmortis
That was a good game, I was so afraid in the tunnel! But the worst part was that ugly man in the end.. i dont remember the name.. Lord V something. But it was so obvios that he killed you, but if your a corpse in the third, what scary can happen then? Like if you meet another corpse what can you say? Like: Hi cousin :) how did you die? some guy name Lord Voldermort ( I dont remember his name) killed me, how about a caffee? :) Anyway, it was a cool game and i cant WAIT until number three!
Thanx ben! Nice work ;)
I think this game was better then the first :P because i got stuck in the first.. I actually screamed at the end I'll be waiting for number 3 :)
This game rocks. It was the kind of game that would have sent me to the counselor in 5th grade. Now I just laughed at it. I haven't played the 1st one though. It was waaayy scarier so I quit playing it. Thanks for the walkthrough. It was a major help when it came to the 2nd set of lights.
this is a good game, hope for part three
For all the people that where like "It's too hard"-that's what a walkthrough is for. The creator even made one himself, and a very good one too. The only time I got stuck was on the second light puzzle, but I figured it out in a few minutes.
And for everyone that thinks it was too simple for a FLASHGAME...I'm really curious as to what you call a good flashgame, if anyone considers this mediocre. Most flash games are very simple in nature, and I was taken aback by the amazing details in this one. This game is scary, interesting, and the storyline is really deep. It's not just the "things pop out of nowhere scary," like some people claim it is. If you take the time to read the journal, it truely takes the gaming experience to a new level, and I'm glad I read it. Also, the suspenseful music and disturbing graphics really added to the overall creepy feel of the game. Wonderfully done. And the actual evp recording- a very nice touch.
I thought the difficulty was a 5 out of 10, but a game doesn't have to be difficult to be good. This is a prime example of that.
The church scene with the the approaching clouds...very frightening. One of the best scenes.
This is the best computer game I've ever played, flashgame or any other. Excellent work.

Does anyone know of any other games like this that are anywhere near this scary? Please tell!
You can try looking through this list of games tagged with 'horror' to see if there's anything there you haven't seen before.
if you cant shoot the enemies that come running towards you in the tunnel its maybe because you didnt click on the bullet box in the room right before.
hey
how do you get the screwdriver because it said there was nothing in the box :S
xx
i hope there is a ex mortis 3 i enjoyed the games
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
The game was awesome, okay people who keep asking the same question, let me explain.
Vlaew, the evil ancient guy, was overthrone by members of the Ex Mortis, which means he is no longer one. However, in the first game he needs the hand to be restored in physical form. Then in the second one, you defeat the Ex Mortis which means.. Vlaew is free to conquer Earth. I thought the Vlaew's voice sounded familiar. Anyway, can't wait for Ex Mortis 3.
Starting from left to right, what is the correct Sudoku puzzle answer?
well ill be honest.i found the first one this morning at 3 am...needless to say i didnt sleep well =P then i found this one today and i must say that both games are well put together. the suspense elements were well played and the diaries...the diaries were pure genius, the depth of the text made me realize that this guy put alot of time into this. being a writer and a flash designer myself i understand this. props to you creator guy. looking forward to exmortis 3...lol i bet someone has made a youtube video bout these games...and if not im def gonna get on it lol j/k
Ehmygawd! I'm still shaking. That was THE scariest thing...I have ever seen in my life. I'm probably never going to sleep again. Scarred...for life. haha. Excellent game though.

GREAT GAME THOUGH. 5 THUMBS UP!
well he did say "a quick death" hehe, didn't scare me much tbh, kinda obvious when things were gonna happen, still a great game though!
Pretty fun game. Nice immersive visuals and sounds. Still, it doesn't hurt to have a third party CHECK YOUR SPELLING from time to time. Also, gotta love a happy ending.
I love his game! It's awesome. In your face, Ben Leffler! I finally beat your game! And in a minute or two after starting the game (walkthru at hand), on a whim, I reached up to my throat. I felt a pulse so fast and powerful a man 12 feet away could hear it. I had absolutely no idea what was going on (I mostly closed my eyes and clicked thru the first game, I'm gonna go back and play it now!).
Also, these scenes were scary too

And,

J.R. Tolkien. Hope I spelled the name(s) right.
omg lol i just read all the comments and im too scared to play :S
i saw the ending of silence of the lambs with the blood filled bath and im scared of everything because some people are actually really twisted and DO have blood filled bath tubs
anywho
scaryyyyy
i cant find the stupid key to get into the car!!! i can only find the weird coathanger and i dont kow how to use it! pleae help
The whole thing about the

I DARE NOT PLAY THIS AT NIGHT. No kidding.
So today, I played it IN THE AFTERNOON. I couldn't kill those darn things that ran towards me!
FREAKING SCARY NOT SUITABLE FOR COWARDS/PEOPLE WHO ARE SCARED OF GHOST.
I don't think I'll get a good night sleep tonight. And tomorrow I HAVE EXAMS.
ARGH IM NOT PLAYING THIS ANYMORE!
Today I dropped in to JIG to have a quick round of Exmortis 2, but I can't find the game. I've given full permission to "fizzlebot", and I haven't changed any settings since I last played it. Is this now a dead link, or just a temporary mix-up?
Thanks.
(Can't wait for Ex3, Ben. Your work is amazing! :D)
Hi Merricat! Unfortunately, Dreamhost (where Fizzlebot is hosted) had some network issues today and they are just now ironing them out. Hopefully by morning everything will be back to normal. Sorry for the inconvenience. :/
Thanks, Jay! Ben's work is fantastic - I must have played a half dozen times already and I still get a good scary jump.
Hmmm....can you imagine his take on a "Saw" game? *eeeek! :D
i can bind the bullet box but cant pick it up help me!!!
i thought exmortis 1 was scarier but this one made me scream when the creepy creature lady thing crawls towards you really fast in the crawl space.
i got one question when you read the book the farmer guy wrote in what's up with the last page?
well, this sure was a great game, but i think the 1st part was better.
oh man was that scary, thanx for the help for finishing it
omg, ive known about the second exmortis for a while, but i couldnt play it. because my computer wouldnt load it..... so i finally got to play it in my spanish class. so i got to the (i dont know if this is a spoiler, but ill put it anyways)

btw. great game, i can't wait untill the 3rd one!
Does Anyone Kno How To Get The Screw Driver Out Of The Tool Box? Every Time I Go To Get It The Tool Box Shuts? And It Says That There IS Nothing In Use In The Box? Does Anyone Kno What I Did Wrong? PLEASE HELP. I Beg Of Thee.
how do you do the almost last part were there is 5 beam and you're trying to put them together?
This game is SOOOOO scary!!!!! I wouldn't dare play it at night..... Thanks for the GREAT GAME!!!! HELLO from the Philippines!!!!
them tips really helped me but i am stuck on the first one is there any walkthroughs on the 1st one
This was very cool at atmospheric, and I loved it...
But it's not so much a game as more a piece of interactive fiction. It's all about the backstory and the sense of dread with the sky darkening and whatnot.
I understand why people feel a little ripped-off by the ending. As a topper to a game, it's a little bit of a let-down. (Though a good opening into part two.)
Yes, the puzzles were fairly easy (though as someone who never, ever plays Sudoku, I was stonewalled by that one), but I wasn't in it for the puzzles, I was sucked into the story and the atmosphere. Really, really good atmosphere.
My only real complaint: For a game, there's a LOT of reading required. Even more than the last chapter. If I wasn't so into it, I might have gotten really pissed off.
In the end, I love the world of this game, and I'd love to see a cool FPS based on it with the same scare factor built in. Obviously you'd need a major game company to make that a reality, but there's real potential here for something bigger.
Nice work! Let's see part three!
Played both 1 & 2...loved them both. (:
Also, for the peeps who NEED HELP WITH THE SCREW DRIVER...

Oh, and "Lean Lark"? Chill out? Don't be such a critic on something that's ment to be entertaining. It just makes you look like a jerk who wants to make him (or her?) self look superior. It's a game. So don't make such a big deal about it, ne? ^^
These games are brilliantly done, and I would LOVE to see them made into movies. Can't wait for the next one. :3
wow that was scary, i jump off ma chair while in that ventilation shaft o.O even though i thought the first episode was scarier than this one but it lacked the diffeculty.
tis game: totally rocks! ;)

sometimes it's just better to:

turn the light's on
turn the music off
keep at least 50 CM distance between you and the screen
How do I get back into the crawlspace through the kitchen?
To post spoiler put them between spoiler tags
The crawlspace part was the scariest part! (I cant figure it out how to pass the "Bibble" part, even wih walkthrough) 1 more thing
If you wanna play this game:
Put the lights on
Put the radio on
Put the computer sounds off
And dont be the only one in the house!
Ronnel50, how can I do to make spoilers? Put them between spoiler tags? What does this means? Reply please. ;]
Wait a second. Let see if works

Cool
comment written by andy on may 29th, that was really helpful, i undestand now, thanks

the ventalation part was exspected. the clouds really scary!!! and can someone tell me what happens when your caught in the clouds?
this game and the first one rocked.... it gave my wife nightmares. the storyline was what made the game. dude you should get some backup and make a full long version for a system... or make a movie... or something. i cant wait for the next installment. thanx for the scare!!!
How to solve the five lights>??
Its so hard.
Well, I read on one of Ben Leffler's blogs that in Exmortis3 we play the same guy from this game so I guess he doesn't die..
yipee we made it!!!! demo mr.hanny got killed in the end...
To all the people bashing this game...It's an online flash game, which means some guy sat down and programmed the whole thing from start to finish, checked it and put it up online for you to play for free. Whining about how easy it was? Have you ever played a really difficult flash p&c that didn't require pixel hunting to find obscure items or areas? There are hundreds of online games available, if you make the game too hard, people will just click on another game and forget about yours. This wasn't meant to be Halo 3 or something people, take it for what it is and be thankful the guy put in as much work as he did. Cool game IMO.
I'm gnna sound a right noob but when i come out the booth for the first time, how do you go back outside
(where do you click?) Or how do i open the door at the back?( it doesn't open! ) It's the question a noob would ask but please help me?!?!?!?!?!
Absoluty fantastic, really enjoyed it Scared the heck out of me,was dissapointed with the ending. Want moe of the same type game Please
he should have made that lord. V guy facing away from him, then he says....i quick death, and turns around and its exmortis! that would have been so freaky
great game and I play this game at 12:00 pm LOL!
I don't think this game is very scary at all.....
Instant I think this game is kind of stupid.
You get killed at the end and help that ancient evil guy get rid of the exmortis so he can rule the earth.
But overall is a great game look forward to exmotris3.
(if you going to create one that is)
this games was good i loved the story to it but its a cut off i need to know whats happens next WHERE IS THE EXMORTIS 3 I NEED TO PLAY IT i have played 1 and 2 now i need to play 3!!!
Absoluty fantastic
I would like to apologize for my earlier comments on this game, I just reviewed the material I posted months back and realized how insensitive they were. After replaying the game, I have to give the designer a round of applause for making a shockingly in depth point and click. The graphics, music and smooth style of play really came to gether to create a "frightening" point and click adventure which so few of these games portray well. It draws the player into the plot and keeps them playing. However I would have like to have seen the story more incorporated into the game itself, alot of the time I just wandered through the map aimlessly clicking on everything in the screen. This method worked for me, but it didn't draw me further into the game. Including the items within the text might have given me a better idea of where to go. Yes it was rather easy. Some have commented that it keeps people playing, however I would have liked a spin or 2 here or there to keep me guessing perhaps some more puzzles. It was very interesting to play and kept me entertained, congrats on a well designed game.
The game was great and really scary, I can't wait for exmortis 3!
It was abit short though and was the dood your playing Joe? Because it said that Joe pulled up outside and the exmortis were already there, and when you went into the corridor the dood was barracating the door, so.....
Any way it was totally awesome and can't wait for the next =P
