Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet

JohnBBased on the James Patterson novels (and the subsequent television spin-off), Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet is a murder mystery wrapped in an adventure game spiced with light hidden object scenes and a few simple minigames. Investigating crimes is the central focus of gameplay, with heaping doses of clue sniffing, murder scene scrutinizing, and some light labwork here and there to keep the story moving along. You don't need to be a fan of the series to enjoy the game, and even if you are, Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet weaves a completely new tale (penned by Patterson) that stays faithful to the original characters' personalities. This time, however, you're in charge.

womensmurderclub.jpgWith each crime you're presented a scene with a small list of objects to find and points of investigation to cover. Not only will you need to grab items, you'll also examine the body and a few key points of interest in the murder scene. The interesting twist is that you play different characters, each with specialized knowledge that will uncover new facts in the case. Everything you discover is catalogued in evidence and information tabs that can be reviewed at any time.

Many scenes come with a simple inventory puzzle that pulls the object finding into an adventure-style riddle. In the first investigation, for example, you must locate items to block holes in a rock so you can capture a key item from a feisty crab. Simple, but an effective diversion from the streamlined pattern of the game. The rest of the game is divided between short dialogue sequences, quick mini-games that are integrated into your investigation, and character specific tasks. Claire, for example, spends a lot of time in the lab mixing chemicals to discover the type of poison used on a victim.

womensmurderclub2.jpgAnalysis: Hidden object adventure games are the new bag, and titles such as Miss Teri Tale, Cate West - The Vanishing Files, and Agatha Christie: Peril at End House set a high bar for aspiring crime-themed games to reach for. Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet comes across as a smartly written, interesting, and altogether fun casual game that divides its focus brilliantly between adventure, mystery, and minigames.

As far as the hidden object chunk of the game goes, items are usually easy to find and a hint system can give you a nudge if necessary. You aren't timed, and mis-clicks offer no penalty, so take your time and use the mouse button liberally. Objects are usually quite small and difficult to pinpoint, but at least your poor eyes aren't sifting through several hundred images to find what you need, just scrutinizing groups of pixels here and there.

Production values are suitably high, with a nice visual presentation underscored by a good soundtrack. The only real downer in Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet is that the uniqueness wears off pretty quickly as chemical mixing, object finding and rote labwork become little more than chores. Click here, click there, fill in the check marks and you're done, there's little challenge and no reason to complete the tasks other than obtaining the information.

A good genre-bender that reels you in with intrigue and keeps you hungry for more.

These find-stuff games are just utterly dull for me, no matter what the theme.

Uh.. what happened to the "Enlightenment" post?

[Edit: Due to technical issues, we had to unpublish the "Enlightenment" review temporarily. Look for it to appear again once we get things sorted out. Thanks! -Jay]

Hi Helmaroc - you are, of course, entitled to your opinion.

Have you even given this one a try?

Yeah, didn't get into it though. Sorry, I just think that jayisgames is getting filled with a lot of stuff that everyone seems to like except me! Escape-the-rooms, point-and-clicks, hidden objects, and all the GROW things, I don't like any of 'em. But, I still enjoy checking the site daily. Not like I could stop, hehe.

Reply

That's odd. Someone just the other day was saying that there's been too many shmups and platformers and not enough point-and-clicks.

We just can't please everyone all the time here, although we do try hard to provide a wide assortment of the best games available across all casual game genres.

Thanks for your feedback! :)

Reply

Should mention this download doesn't work in Opera.

Reply

That's because it's not a browser game. xD

What "doesn't work" exactly?

Reply

I thought the plot and writing were really great and enthralling... right up until the end. Then I was disappointed.

Why did it end with the discovery of the body? Are we supposed to believe the police said "Oh, the secret society killed the killer, let's go home now"?

There's a certain amount of grind in all these games, but I think there's grind in just about every game, isn't there? Leveling up in RPGs, normal waves in shmups, filler levels in platformers, etc. Basically you just gotta play the games where the grind doesn't feel so grinding.

I gave this one 4/5, because it is innovative and fun, but many times the objects you have to find are SO TINY and aforementioned plot problem.

Hi there,

I wonder if someone here can help me please? I am having massive problems with the glass statues in the Orphanage. I can't figure out what order they are supposed to go in at all!

Any help woul be much appreciated, thank you! :)

I like (LOVE) hidden object games . . . and don't particularly like all the extra stuff that goes along with it, BUT I could probably put up with it in this Scarlet game has the hidden objects TOO SMALL.....my eyes are old.
Can anyone please suggest a Hidden Object game that the articles are bright, clear and rely on being cleverly hidden rather than small and dark . . . in my opinion small and dark only suggests that the software creator was not very good and was very lazy.

I would be forever in gratitude.

Reply

I'm also stuck on the glass objects in the orphanage..
Any help would be fantastic (now officially tired of clicking randomly and hoping i get the order right..!)
It mentioned "Having seen these before?" But..i don't remember seeing them before..?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Glass figures... make sure the hands touch the one next to it. Or at least in same position as hand next to it.

Reply

There's a large bottleneck in the gameplay that's only mitigated by having a 'skip' button for puzzles. This is the glass figurine puzzle in The Orphanage level- a series of glass figurines in various poses that you're supposed to place in order.

I tried finding homepages for the developer, Flood Light games, but was unable to. The glass figurines puzzle in The Orphanage level was a terrible puzzle, and a waste of development and player time. There is nothing to work from- no previous knowledge, no hints, only the mocking 'Oh, I saw a puzzle like this once' character comment. You can eventually work out that their arms can touch in sequence, but as the puzzle is randomized, the placement is essentially meaningless. If there wasn't a 'Skip' button, I would have quit and uninstalled the game right there. Whoever thought this was a good idea (Having a randomized, unintuitive, frustrating puzzle that requires 90% guessing and 10% logic, that seems to be only filler) should be smacked upside the head and forced to take remedial Game Design.

Overall, the game spent too much time with 'oh, this is kind of neat for 30 seconds' puzzles, dragging them out far past the point where they were interesting or meaningful. The character-switching means absolutely nothing as there's no character development; It may cater to fans of the books, but, having not read them, I have nothing to gauge this by. There's no meaningful storyline, dialogue, the plot is mediocre, the gameplay is mediocre, and there's nothing to recommend this game as anything other than a time-killer.

Hi,

I'm having trouble in the 2nd (3rd?) investigation where I'm in the father's back yard. I'm supposed to get a blood sample off of a rose bush. I can't seem to, even with the swab.

Thanks

...Robinski

Reply

Help! I'm stuck in Investigation 8. I'm trying to pick up a fluid sample and it won't let me. I've already bought this game and would hate to not be able to play to the end. Is there a special trick I need to do to get the swab to pick up the sample?
Thanks so much.

Reply

Betty Hall - I would recommend any of the Mystery Case Files games (if you haven't played them already). For the most part, the objects are clear and rely on being cleverly hidden. My personal favourite is Ravenhearst, but all of them are good. I also find they're fun to re-play.

I'm having the same problem as susieque42...level 4. The glass figurines have been arranged, I took a picture of the glass wall hanging, and all the items have been found. The picture on the wall sparkles but nothing happens when I click on it. What now?

use one of your inventory items

To Robinski,
I came up from the bottom and swiped to get the blood. That was the only way it would transfer to the swab. Hope this helps.

For the glass figures start with hat hand up and outand end with hat hand up and out. No hat and hands kinda down in the middle. put the others in place by the hand position starting with hat, no hat and so on.

For the film reels I think you have to do the date. 2002 maybe. I cannot remember.

Now I need help. I am stuck in the same place Holly is. Glass figures done, picture on back wall sparkes but nothing I click does anything. HELP!!!

Reply

For everyone having problems with the picture sparkling on the back wall, do you have a picture in your inventory? I seem to remember that you need to use a picture in your inventory and click on the sparkling picture with it.

Betty Hall, have you tried Dream Chronicles 1 and 2? I've played a few puzzle games recently, and those seemed to be the best "hide in plain sight" games, with stuff that was very well hidden in brightly lit screens.

When you are trying to swab the dads blood off the thorn, make sure you hace closed the caption box. You wont be able to swab until you have done this.

To catch the dad, just keep clicking near to the gates and she will close them. Eventually you will have to literally chase him into the center of the maze and he will then give you the info.

Investigation 8, retrieving blood sample:

It's on the desk, to the left of the keyboard. Hold the light there for a couple seconds and it will start to sparkle. Then put your light away and click on the now sparkly area. It will take you to a close up of the desk, where you take the light out again, and the blood shows up green on the keyboard and desk. After that, wave the swab around to grab it-- it took me about thirty seconds and seemed to work when I came up from below the stain.

Reply

Women's Murder Club - Level 8 - Make sure the desk is in the "close up" position and use the blacklight on it again. Also see Gamezebo for further insights/spoilers.

Reply

I also am stuck on the snowflake in level 8,no more hints. help. the invible blood is on the desk between the monitor and keyboard. you have to click on that area then use the blacklight.

Reply

I finally found the snowflake. You know the pictures on the shelves by the wall? it's to the left of the top picture, on the wall. As for the lightbulbs, yes they are in an order, same colors together going from lightest to darkest. I cant remember what color goes where but just keep puting one lightbulb in different places and when its in the right place it will stick. when all the lightbulbs are in the right place, then you will get the key.

Wellll!!! You DO use the close up, and then the black light and the blood shows up between the monitor and the beyboard top, not at all where it was in the regular scene. MUCH easier to get it there, lol. Geezzzzz, I must be tired, was expecting it to be to the left like in the reg room scene.

Jennifer the easy way to solve the number puzzles is pick one bottle look a the clue and find the numbers that would fit that particular equations and work from there. put those in that order and the look at the clues that have the same bottle number and work out that equations

Confession: I am a gaming addict. I love it! Glad I found this site.

Now, from reading all the posts on this latest Murder Mystery game, I had exactly the same problems. So, I will try to give you a few hints from my experience the first go round. Second play I whizzed through the game in less than an hour.

After finally giving in to the "solve" and "skip" button on the glass figurines, (they were certainly a waste of time) I got completely frustrated after about 20 minutes with the murder victims picture in inventory and the sparkling picture on the wall...FINALLY, I clicked and dragged the murder victims picture up the staircase and placed it to the RIGHT of that tiny picture, NOT ON IT! WAH-LAH a new picture flashed, saying it looked like the murder victim and I was on my way!

The cigarette butts and flute? I only found the last butt because I had to finally resort to the hint button and yes, the last and most difficult butt to find is on a hat band. The flute is on the back rim of a seat in the theater. If I think of anything else, I'll write again! Ciao!

@ Ninjagermany: For the key you have to solve the puzzle with the lightbulbs. And for that puzzle think rainbow ;)

HINT for level 5 finding the umbrella: It is tiny and dark, and I had to blow it up with my graphics program. It is here...

Just bought this game and immediately had a problem. The program was missing a dll file which I had to find and install in order for the game to work. Then after finding all the items in the first part of the investigation, to block the holes where the crab is hiding, my game freezes up. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Just made a breakthrough.

To the people stuck in the maze level 6. Drove me nuts. I'd found all the objects - all crossed off. Found the dragon room & the exit in the maze, then nothing happened even after clicking solve - only showed me pics of the exit & the dragon room.

I backed out, had a look round the restaurant, clicked on everything - & what do you know - I found an object wasn't on my list. Message came up investigation solved.

What the??

This object was in the bottomish left hand area. Black, thin & tall - like an eiffel tower or flute sort of thing. I dont really remember it because it was so random! And I am so sure my list was all crossed out! The designers better fix this game up, raise the bar, if they expect any sequels to sell!

Hi,

I am stuck at the beginning of investigation 8. I found all the objects in the police department. Afterwards I found the dead guy in is apartment, looked at the email and found all the objects there but the game tells me that there is still a puzzle to solve and my list says junk mail. Can't find it!!! Going back to the police station doesn't help, cant do anything there.

Please help, I am totally desperate!

@eva-Maria

You find the junk mail in Qian Gai's appartment laying on the chair left side bottom.
You will need to use the junk mail at the police station at the computer to see how to write the name.

With junk mail, they simply mean: "Reklamesendungen" ;)

Greetings, Kayleigh

Hi. I am on investigation 8. I swabbed the invisible blood, but now nothing is happening. I go to the map and there is no other place for me to go except back in the apartment. Am I missing something? Someone please help.... I am going crazy. This has been going on for 2 days and all I want to do is finish the game. Thanks in advance.

Reply

I bought this game at a store and finished it in the same night... Does anyone have any recommendations of other games like this? I didn't have to use all of my hints - just a few here and there. I really enjoyed it but now I feel like we spend $20 for me to play for a few hours....

THANKS!

There are any number of great Hidden Object games out there for you to enjoy, but in my personal opinion the Mystery Case Files games are among THE best, and there are five of those to play through (the latest, "Return to Ravenhearst," is great, but my personal favorite would have to be Madame Fate still).

If you're looking to save a little cash, Nightshift Code is on sale for only 99 cents (see the sidebar). Or check out Mysteriez and Mysteriez 2 at wellgames.com. Those are free hidden object games playable online. Not exactly like their downloadable cousins, but good enough to scratch any hidden object itches you may have in a pinch!

Oh, one more note now that I'm thinking about it. If you really like the hardboiled kind of story telling from Women's Mystery Club, you may also want to look into Righteous Kill. I wasn't all that impressed with that one, but there were some similarities in style between that game and this one.

wheres the tweezer in investigation 6??i cant find it..urghh..

I'm about ready to throw this game in the trash. I've signed in twice using different names only to get stuck at investigation 4 both times. After solving the figurines puzzle, I go back to the room and click on the sparkle picture on the back wall and nothing happens. I have two pictures in inventory and neither will stick to the wall picture, and the wall picture opens up nothing after clicking on it. Can't use a hint there, so you just look at the screen until you get bored waiting for something to happen. Would be nice if I'm not doing it right to be able to skip to the next level. This game was a waste of my money.

Good day. Can anybody please tell me where I can find the floppy disk in judge Tso's Office? I'm in investigation 9.

I am SOOOO mad. I just bought the game not even 3 days ago. I finished it and saw the killer and everything. But i thought there would be another killer and a whole other investigation. I am just so mad i wasted 20.00 dollers for a game i played for 2 days.

[Edit by Kayleigh ~ Please take care about your language, thank you.

And as little tip: Before you descide to purchase a game, read the review here on JIG and also the comments of other users. I always do and it helps me often to make a descision about purchasing a game or not :) Greetings, Kayleigh]

Well I know that. I just loved the game so much I didn't care. So I didn't even bother reading about it. Sorry about my language. I am never buying that kind of game again.

@terri - Investigation 2/Specimen for Dr. Yao

Right side of the scene, on the round table, you will find an ashtray with a cigar - pick up the cigar - this is the specimen.
The cigar is a puzzle object, as you will use it later again. Puzzle objects are not shown with a hint

Investigation 9:

the floppy disk is under the desk, next to the briefcase, that's why you can't see it straight away.

Hope this helps.

Can someone help me plz? Every level I come to has problems like it won't let me swab the green stuff or I organize the bottles in the right order and nothing happens till I press solve or log out and then back in. If the rest of the game is like this I give up.

Diana Brom - technical issues

This sound like technical issues. When you are sure your computer has the needed system requierments for the game, you should contact the technical support of the webside, you purchased the game. They might be better able to help you :)

Found this game to be entirely too easy. Storyline was okay. Guess that's what I get for being an adult playing a teen rated game. Also, found some of the hunts within missions to be unnecessary.

On the colored light bulbs, you have to click on the inside of the part where the light bulb goes in. It will tell you if you get any wrong because it won't light up.

I've been trying to get the blood sample in inv. 8 to no avail. The blue light showed the blood in close-up mode, but the swab stubbornly refuses to get the blood! I've logged out, started over with a new id and still no joy. I've already looked for the fixes on this site but it just won't work! HELP

Reply

@kmccue in close up mode first on the computer, first use the blue light (make sure comment box is closed) then use swab from the bottom up...Hope that helps. Make sure you check out the body too

The snowflake for investigation 8 is located on the window. The middle window area, on the roof there are 3 lights, directly under the middle one there's a really white area, just randomly click there and I hope you find it.

If you mean the key to the container,

it's on the top left corner of the container.
