Weekend Download

JohnBIt's a platforming fest on this edition of Weekend Download! We've traveled to the far away land of Platformia to find awesome run-and-jump-and-shoot games for you to play. Our expedition resulted in a backpack full of treasures, the best of which are below!

adventureapes.gifAdventure Apes and the Mayan Mystery (Windows, 5MB, free) - A well-oiled platform adventure game that will remind you a bit of Metroid and maybe a bit of Jazz Jackrabbit, too. Explore an ancient temple and unlock treasure chests to nab gold, gems, and very useful items. A lot of twisty passageways and tall chasms dotted with precarious perches, so your platforming and exploration skills will definitely come into play. The pixel art is also phenomenal.

starguard.gifStar Guard (Mac/Windows, 1.8MB, free) - What it lacks in visual complexity, Star Guard more than makes up for with balanced and entertaining gameplay. You are a spaceguy on a mission to defeat a wizard. Armed with a gun and... uh.. the ability to jump, you must carve your way through nine levels of traps, enemies, and more traps. Checkpoints make things less frustrating, and infinite lives make it a fairly easy game, but it's one of those you'll feel compelled to beat once you start playing.

raimondex.jpgRaimond EX (Windows, 5.7MB, free) - A dark and somewhat macabre platform game where you're searching for way to cure your dying brother. Explore the underworld as you pick up and eat fast food, steal TVs, and engage in illegal organ trafficking! Be sure to read the controls on the download page, they come in quite handy. Created for the GameJolt Axiom contest, so you may encounter a glitch or two.

Note: All games have been confirmed to run under Windows Vista and are virus-free. Mac users should try Boot Camp, Parallels, or CrossOver Games to play Windows titles, Linux users can use Wine. If you know of a great game we should feature, use the Submit link above to send it in!

I'm experiencing some problems with Star Guard on a Mac (OS X 10.7). It sometimes hangs before loading a level. Anyone else with the same problem? I've tried both Safari and Firefox.

I played about 20 minutes of Adventure Apes. While it was fun running around and exploring, I don't think I ever saw a save point as described in the manual.

After falling into some spikes and losing both of my remaining lives (spikes are harsh!), I played some sort of afterlife minigame to continue, but nothing happened after the minigame concluded. I was just sent back to the main menu, and hitting "Continue" sent me back to the very beginning.

I came across several goodies that looked very appealing, but I had no way of jumping high enough. Is there a powerup for that? Without a way to track where I'd been, I got lost easily.

While it looks very promising and I would have loved to spend more time with it, losing all of my progress after one bad jump was very discouraging.

How do I unpack the mac-version of Star Guard?

Star Guard is awesome! I love retro platformers like this, keep up the good work folks!
I haven't gotten far in Adventure Apes. The artwork is very nice. The controls feel a tad clunky, mainly jumping, and I think health goes down too fast.

Loved what I was able to play of Star Guard, but it's a little buggy on the Mac. I've had it freeze-crash on me at the start of two different levels.

Also - if it's done in Flash, why not just put it online?

Your wrong about the codes RC

Also having Mac issues on Star Guard, haven't been able to load level 2 after beating level 1. I can play anything on trial mode though. Only tried Firefox.

Where did you find the codes, Meme? I put in the first one that rc posted at the title screen and I started with all the weapons, so it does work. I tried the second one too and again had all the weapons but I didn't notice any other differences.

I found the codes near the bottom of the download site...maybe i'm spelling them wrong.

Crikey I'm having a problem playing Raimond Ex! I'm finding the keys and controls a tad frustrating. Has anyone else tried it?

On the other hand Star Guard is an absolute treat (if only it saved progress)!

Star Guard was kinda fun, but it's way too easy to get frustrated - and there's no way to save progress (if you beat a level, you can play it in Trial mode, but you always start the story from the beginning...). Really annoying.
