towerbloxx.jpgJohnBFrom developer Digital Chocolate comes a web adaptation of the immensely popular mobile phone game, Tower Bloxx. All you need to play is one button — either the mouse or [down] arrow key — and a sharp pair of eyes. A swinging crane holds a section of a tower above a platform. Press the button to drop it, then try and stack the following pieces on top as neatly as you can. Residents are eager to move in and will float to the windows as soon as a block lands. Drop too many pieces and it's game over.

Two game modes in Tower Bloxx — Quick Game and Build City — give something for both the casualest of casual gamers and anyone who wants deeper satisfaction from their games. The Build City mode puts you in charge of constructing an entire metropolis one skyscraper at a time. Piece together towers, then place them on the grid in an effort to increase the town's population. Upgrades and new types of towers add to the strategy, but you still have to have a good eye for dropping blocks while building. Quick Game, on the other hand, lets you hop in and build a tower where your only concern is when to click the mouse button.

A combo system lets you rack up a high score by dropping pieces at the dead center of the block below. Tower Bloxx isn't too strict with its physics, allowing you to build a wavy tower that would never stand in the real world. The more lopsided your building is, however, the more it will sway in the wind as you gain height. A moving tower is a tough target for a swinging crane.

If you love Tower Bloxx, then check out the downloadable game, Tower Bloxx Deluxe!

Analysis: Such a simple game, but Tower Bloxx managed to hook me from the first time the screen rumbled when I dropped a block. The combination of the Quick and Build modes creates a near-perfect atmosphere to keep just about any gamer coming back for more. And the game is so immediately gratifying you'll want a few more rounds before you call it a day.

A little something for just about any kind of player, Tower Bloxx is one of those rare games that hook you right from the start.

Play Tower Bloxx

Cheers to Shaun and Adamus for suggesting the game!

A little scoring advice: Nothing matters more than keeping a combo going as long as possible. I think combos made higher up a building are worth more than those down lower, but I'm not certain of that. The only other significant factor is getting the roof on as perfect as possible, preferably a bonus roof. But you can make a really high scoring building with no roof at all just by keeping the bonus sparkles going without interruption.

By best layout I've done so far is:
13y, 5g, 6r, 1b

Though I think I would score higher with Sethums layout of 12y, 8g, 4r, 1b. Since my yellows don't hold that many more people than my greens yet.

Here are my steps: (last spoiler for the final outcome)

Put greens in the corners and a yellow in the center, and get scores you are happy with for them. The scores for the other buildings don't matter, they won't survive.
31213
2x1x2
12431
2x212
31213

Start putting yellows along 2 adjacent edges.
34243
41x1x
2x4xx
41xxx
3xxx3

Get a green just inside the corner of the two sides in which you have put yellows. Also note the red you are putting near the green in the opposite corner, this can be done later but it is easiest now. It won't survive, but you'll need it.
34243
431xx
224x1
41xx2
3xxx3

build four more yellows, two next to the latest green you built and two on the outside on the sides you haven't filled in yet.
34243
43414
24412
411x2
342x3

Upgrading a couple of blues to red
34243
43424
24412
421x2
342x3

Complete a plus of yellows in the middle by building a green just inside of the last corner. Too bad it won't survive.
34243
43424
24442
42432
34213

Turn that last green you built to blue so that you can build in yellow in the last two checkerboard squares.

A hard strategy/action game.

the main thing is to get into the game and follow it!

Reply

I have this game on my phone! Will try it out here now too!

Reply

I have this on my mobile, too!

My biggest city has 22089 citizens and highest tower level is 253.

One small hint for city building - the building restrictions are valid only for the building phase, once it's there you can replace all the buildings around it as you see fit. So it's basically quite possible to have a city filled almost entirely with green and yellow buildings, you just have to be a little bit careful with planning.

Reply

I love this game. Saw it a little while ago. The special roofs are cool. =)

Reply

This is great, it is going to be my new addiction I am sure.

Dumb question - I want to clear my city and start over, but I haven't figured out a way to do that. Anyone know?

Reply

Oh goodness, never mind, I found it right on the main menu - I said, stupid question.

Reply

all i can say is, thank goodness there are no earthquake in this little town!

Good game! Same style as "Thor Towers"(LDF), but a lot more complex and fun. Still, I don't think I would be brave enough to live in those houses...

The best board possible can have 12 yellow buildings, and I haven't worked out exactly the maximal number of green, red, and blue remaining (I managed 6, 4, and 3).

I got a city with over 25,000, and I think the limit (for someone with more patience than I) is about 30,000 based on my best buildings of each color:

Blue - 204 people
Red - 900 people
Green - 1600
Yellow - 1750

I think this guy built my first apartment...

Reply

I think the most Luxury (gold) towers you could build is 13. I've figured out how to make a checkerboard of 12 of them.

A tip for when you're stacking blocks:

Try dropping them at the edges of the swing when the crane is as far out as it can go. It allows for a slightly larger margin of error in timing, and it's easier go gauge when the block is at the edge of a swing rather than when it's in the middle of it

I like how the little people fly in the windows with umbrellas :P

Reply

There should be a "Stack" tag for those games. Not a bad idea, huh? (Maybe a little hard)

Reply

Okay, here's a piece of advice that may make me sound idiotic but it worked for me sooo....

Use a metronome. I never managed to put the pretty roof on the red towers, so I went to http://webmetronome.com/, set it to 2 beats per cycle at 46 beats per minute and voila, the second try got me a 13x combo and a shiny golden roof for my new favourite building. I'm not sure this qualifies as cheating, but then again I'm not sure I care.

Reply

Interesting and fun game. :) The tactical aspect keeps you thinking to prevent wasting a lot of time on towers you won't need later on, and the unlockables make building previous towers more interesting again too, while also encouraging more precise building.

Anyone knows what's the maximum number of unlockables? So far, I've unlocked the special roofs for blue and red...

Reply

For better accuracy when constructing towers:

Think of the crane as shooting the next floor straight out at the angle it's facing when you fire it (instead of a crane that tosses the box with horizontal momentum)

For better score during your bonus period:

Fire the floors out every time the crane passes over the tower (in either swing direction), rather than waiting for the best shot or waiting for the swing to reset. The more floors you get on during the bonus peroid, the more points you get.

I believe the best layout is:
12 yellow
8 green
4 red
and 1 blue.

Of course, you'll have to overwrite a number of towers to get there...

Reply

Pieter: I've unlocked the special roof for the green buildings, but I've only been able to actually put it on one once.

So, using regular old MS Paint and some ingenuity, I've come up with two different ways of making the same pattern of 13 yellow towers and 4 each of the other 4 towers, which makes me thing that that's the optimal city. I'm slowly playing through trying to actually build the city that way and it's working okay so far.

My only problem is obsessively wanting to put the special roof on every building. I'm such a perfectionist.

Reply

Oops, a little clarification:

The two plans I came up with have the same arrangement of yellow towers, but the 4 blue, 4 red, and 4 green towers were in different places between the two plans. Interestingly, the plans were symmetric in the same ways, and there was a noticeable pattern of the colors, which is why I think it's the optimal layout.

My best current setup is 12 yellows, 3 greens, 5 blues and 5 reds. I did this in-game without any heavy MS Paint pre-planning or whatever.

Where is your 13th yellow building placed? Mine are in a checkerboard pattern, with the middle being non-yellow...

Reply

Never mind, I've got it.

My optimal setup is 13 yellows, 4 greens, 7 reds and 1 blue. I have the building algorithm, but I still didn't try it out in-game.

How do you fit more than 12 yellow towers onto the board?

The best I can figure out with 12y, 6g, 4r, and 1b is:

R Y B Y R
Y G Y G Y
G Y R Y G

Reply

Great game. I can't think of anything that could have been done better, except maybe it could be a little bit more lenient to get a perfect drop. It'd be awesome to see this in a SimCity style...

Reply

Careful, guys. Your "optimal" plans require you to destroy towers that other towers are dependent on. So that may hamper you in the long run. For example, if you have greens in the corners and are now bounded by two yellows, and you unlock the special green roof, you're going to have to demolish those two yellows and insert a red and a blue tower in their place before you can replace the regular-roofed green tower in the corner with your special-roofed green tower.

I'd be interested in knowing the building algorithms, though. It's actually an interesting mathematical question. See http://homepage.mac.com/simx/technonova/C757145247/E20070829211523/index.html .

Reply

Ok here's a little tutorial for maximizing your city. This tutorial doesn't take your skills into account just the placement rules and the bonuses you get.

Start with playing however you like. No, really. Your primary goal is to unlock all the bonus roofs - starting an optimal layout from scratch would result in plenty of non-bonus roofed towers.

First build a yellow building in the middle. Then start from the top row and proceed in checkerboard pattern - 2 in the first row, three in the second, two in the third (not counting the middle) and so on. Also, try to "push" the blue buildings further down as you build because those buildings in top rows are most likely staying. It goes without saying that every building has to have a bonus roof, at least.

My final setup looks like this (1-blue, 4-yellow)

34243
43424
24441
43424
24143

and this is from the game, without preplanning, so it probably is not optimal. See if you can do better :).

Reply

This is not the best configuration, but one that includes 12Y, 5G, 4R, 4B. I also figured I'd spoil it for those who are lazy.

Keep in mind, like I said, this is not the best, and not done mathematically or anything.

STEP 1 (BLUES)

[ ][B][ ][ ][ ]
[B][B][ ][B][B]
[ ][ ][ ][B][ ]
[ ][B][ ][B][B]
[ ][B][ ][ ][ ]

STEP 2 (REDS)

[ ][B][R][R][ ]
[B][B][ ][B][B]
[R][R][ ][B][R]
[R][B][ ][B][B]
[ ][B][R][R][ ]

STEP 3 (GREENS)

[G][B][R][R][G]
[B][B][ ][B][B]
[R][R][G][B][R]
[R][B][ ][B][B]
[G][B][R][G][G]

STEP 4 (YELLOWS)

[G][Y][R][Y][G]
[Y][B][Y][B][Y]
[R][Y][G][Y][R]
[Y][B][Y][B][Y]
[G][Y][R][Y][G]

Mind you, doing it this way will only let you optimize

the blues and the yellows, so make your first reds and greens count

.

Like I said, not the best configuration, any optimizations or corrections are welcome.

Pray tell, how is your 12Y, 5G, 4R, 4B city more optimal then my 13Y, 5G, 5R, 2B one?

Re-read the post above yours baba. He said that he knew it wasn't the best config about 3 different times. Yours shows your final setup, but not how to get there. Dan posted a complete walkthrough to get 12Y

Dan's approach would work if the restrictions had to be followed indefinitely. However, since it's not the case his approach is doomed from the start - the only way to improve his layout is to essentially start from scratch.

I explained in my post how to get better setup, but I cannot go in as much detail as he did because it would take too much place. I outlined a general principle and I think it's quite clear - start with the middle yellow, then follow the checkerboard pattern from top to bottom while pushing the blue buildings out of the way all the time. By that I mean after building a yellow building exchange the blue building for a red or green whenever you have a chance by making another blue building below.

For a TRUE optimal solution, I guess contacting a math whiz is necessary. It's not quite in Fermat's theorem league but it is a complex math problem, and would take some serious thinking and knowledge of graph theory.

It got me 11th place when I finished it, but now it's in 13 and I'm rebuilding almost all of the buildings to try to get higher. My highest combo was 23 on a yellow building, which gave a +1467 bonus (the tower ended up with 1964 people). Not as good as some other people's here.

I love this game :)

Very easy way to get a very big score is the following layout:

2 4 1 4 3
4 3 4 2 4
1 4 4 4 1
4 2 4 3 4
3 4 1 4 2

13 y
4 g
4 r
4 b

This way you can rebuild all of your yellows bar one with impunity. As the yellows are the ones that are going to contribute most to your high score, this is a good plan... not the _optimum_ layout, but it helped me get 24500 with minimal effort.

Reply

That's 12 points below my highest score, Hermann. We had the same tower count, but I think your average yellow tower was a little lesser than mine since my biggest yellow had only 1964 population.

Reply

Can someone please help me?!
How do you get to build a yellow tower? I have gotten to the part where it says "no place to build this type of tower". Thanks for all your help!

Reply

the optimal is 13Y...pushing blues as down as i could i finally came up with just one blue tower bottom raw middle, and last tower i had to build was the yellow above it.

I don't keep a yellow tower unless i get 1700+ citizens in it, but i got several 2k yellows, and i managed to do a 26combo with 2500 citizens, which is my record. I guess this city is gonna hit aprox 35k+ citizens, im gonna post the layout soon.

No, it's not. Not unless there's a bug in the game.

You cannot have a configuration with no blue towers.

Proof:
Whichever order you placed those towers in, you must have placed some tower (let's call it X) last (i.e.: after all the others). Tower X must have been one of a B, R, G or Y tower.

Case B:
Then tower X is blue and since X was the last tower placed, there remains a blue tower on the board.
Case R, G, Y:
Then one of tower X's neighbors is blue, and since X was the last tower placed, there remains a blue tower on the board.

Ergo, your configuration which lacks a blue tower is impossible.

Hi,
I wrote a little C++ program which uses A* algorithm to make "personal-optimum" placements.
The resulting patterns are
RYBYR GYRYG
YGRGY YRYRY
GYYYG GYRYG
YGRGY YGYGY
RYBYR BYRYB
These are not really optimum, because it could give other results, depending on how points you judge the buildings. I manage to get perfect Blue & Red, and after some tries nearly perfect greens, but yellows anooy me too much and i never go beyond 2000 pts.

I tried. I tried to like this game. But the click bang, click bang, click bang monotony just got to me. Plus, I made the mistake of playing with headphones on and it was like the pieces were crashing right into my brain. The challenge of lining them up just right is not enough to make me want to see what else there might be (is there anything else?) to this game.

I'm playing TB3D on the iPhone, and I'm stumped as to how to unlock the "Keys to the City." I have #1 rated buildings in every slot in every town, generally with much higher than the minimum tower population required for a #1 rating. All 3 cities are down to 1 blue tower, with 9 yellows in Seller's Market and 10 in Richmond Business. My populations are:

Richmond Business: 31,515
Seller's Market: 23,611
Toonfield Grove: 10,858

I ditch all towers unless they are at least:
Blue: 180
Red: 600
Green: 900
Yellow: 1500

Anyone out there unlocked the keys in one (or all) of the cities? If so, what were your populations/yellow tower counts?

Hint and a major question...

So I have the whole the game down, one hint I can give, you can always replace existing buildings with better more populous ones, or demolish a low or badly built one by placing them on th e bull dozer. Just look at the top and you will see the newly built ones population over the current spaces.

BUT, I can't find out what the box in the upper left shows. It has a tower with "XX/20" and two people there. I would assume the goal of the game is to get this number to be "20/20" but what is it then? Any clues?

Here is a way to get 13y, 4g, 6r, 1b building 42 towers in all (assuming you build them all perfect first time). As noted above, it means you have limited options later in the game so other layouts may let you get higher scores as your skill improves. I used this on the Nokia phone version.

Bold indicates the new/changed towers, italic those that can no longer be replaced.

x1x1x
xxxxx
1xxx1
xxxxx
x1x1x

x121x
2xxx2
1xxx1
2xxx2
x1x1x

If you don't have enough points to unlock the red towers yet, you can build on the empty spaces. They will all be replaced later so it doesn't matter what you build there

31213
213x2
124x1
2x1x2
31x13

Build the new blues then the red by which time you have hopefully unlocked the greens. Building 5 of these should unblock the yellow to put in the centre. Again use the blank squares if you need more points to unlock yellow

This is the last point you can replace all the towers built so far with better ones so make sure you are happy before going on.

34243
41312
214x1
411x2
31x13

Build the new blue first, then you have 4 spaces available for yellows.

34243
43212
214x1
411x2
31x13

Replace the existing green in position 3 of the second row with a red and then you can replace the blue in position 2 with a green. sometimes you have to go back to go forward)From here on it is pretty straightforward

34243
43412
24411
421x2
31x13

34243
43424
24411
421x2
31x13

34243
43424
24411
42132
31113

34243
43424
24441
42432
34113

34243
43424
24442
42411
34213

Build the two blues first, then the two reds giving slots for the final two yellows:

24442

Thinking over the weekend about the best you can do with all towers rebuildable to improve your score while you practise I came up with this. It won't beat high scores possible with the other layout but is OK if you don't want to got to all the trouble of starting again and having to build at least 42 towers improve your personal best.

Start with a basic tile that satisfies the building rules.

BR
GY
RB

You can fit this on a 5x5 grid twice without any problem using the bottom-right blue as a link

BRxxx
GYxxx
RBRxx
xGYxx
xRBxx

Now our aim is to get as many yellows as possible while still having all towers capable of being rebuilt. In particular, we would like to get a yellow in every space next to a green.

Looking at the bottom left, we can see that this is possible if we put a blue in the corner

BRxxx
GYxxx
RBRxx
YGYxx
BRBxx

Working from the top, let's try a yellow in the centre. For this to be valid, we also need a green and blue. Putting the green in the top and the blue in the second then requires a further red and blue to validate the green but putting the green in the second row ,above the existing red can be validated with just two blues:

BRYBx
GYGBx
RBRxx
YGYxx
BRBxx

In fact, the yellow and green can be put the other way up and still be valid if you wish.

Putting a green in the corner with a red underneath is the best we can do to finish the top rows

BRYBG
GYGBR
RBRxx
YGYxx
BRBxx
Now, the top left space remaining is flanked by a red and blue so can contain a green without further validation or a yellow if we can add a green to validate the yellow and a blue to validate the green. Trying the yellow and green next to each other forces a finish as follows

BRYBG
GYGBR
RBRYG
YGYxB
BRBxx

Going for green in the corner
BRYBG
GYGBR
RBRYG
YGYxB
BRBRG

Which means the best we can do for the last space is green.

BRYBG
GYGBR
RBRYG
YGYGB
BRBRG

5Y, 7G, 6R, 7B

However, putting yellow and green the opposite way around forces a better finish

BRYBG
GYGBR
RBRGY
YGYxB
BRBxx

Again going for green in the corner

BRYBG
GYGBR
RBRGY
YGYxB
BRBRG

Enables the last space to be filled with a yellow!

BRYBG
GYGBR
RBRGY
YGYYB
BRBRG

6Y, 6G, 6R 7B

And all towers rebuildable.

OK, A final comment with the best I can do for both rebuildability and high scores.

First build this (blues, then reds, then greens)

GBBRG
RRxRB
BRGBB
BRxRR
GRBBG

All these are rebuildable so get the best score that you can with the bold ones. The others are only there to allow the bold ones to be built because you will notice that as soon as you are happy with your scores for the bold towers, you can put yellows in all the other spaces.

This gives 12Y, 5G, 4R, 4B with all 12 yellow towers rebuildable to maximise your score

Wow, the post in The Vault really takes me back. I still randomly get emails through photobucket about the screenshot I posted way back (as LSN) :)

here's my basic layout
RGBGR

then, get the towers to have trophy roofs. ALL of them.

and thanks to the ones who mentioned the 12 yellows, thanks for your comments! it appears that if i didn't see that, i might have resorted to starting over again.

I play the mobile version of this game, and I love it!
I was wondering if the scoring system is different, because I can't see how it's possible to have a red with 987 and a blue with 200 as somebody here mentioned. I managed to have a perfect red, with all blocks perfectly stacked all the way to the top, and it scored 801 points. Probably I could have had a few more points placing the roof even better, but surely not that many!

My best scores:

Blue: 162
Red: 801
Green: 1492
Yellow: 2511

Total city: 40817
