AlexThe WokWhen some despicable and toothy crooks burst into your village and make off with your people's most prized possession, a mysterious and powerful wok which fell from the heavens one day in a cloud of smoke and fire, it's up to you to get it back in The Wok, a point-and-click puzzler from Begamer. Click around on each scene to interact with various objects and figure out how to successfully navigate past hungry monsters, deadly traps, and lava-filled caverns in your quest to recover your stolen mystical cookware.

The Wok offers up a bizarre world full of whimsy and wonder, where nothing is as it seems and lethal dangers await just one wrong step. Weird creatures shriek at you from every corner, plants and trees that seemed to be part of the scenery magically come to life, and almost every rock could be hiding a secret underneath it. The artwork is surreal in an almost Monty Python-esque way, and this is definitely one game where "this is crazy" is a compliment. Though this is not the most difficult nor the longest of titles, many of the stages require multiple looks in order to determine exactly what needs to be done and the time-sensitive puzzles can occasionally border on frustrating. Just remember, if and when you do manage to reclaim the sacred Wok, be sure to honor it, protect it, and maybe invite me over to eat some delicious celebratory stir fry from it once in a while.

That was fun! Good combination of timed and not-timed levels.

I played this through on another website before it showed up here. I never did get something...

On the screen where the protagonist finally reaches The Wok, how are you supposed to know which arrows to click? The wrong ones kill you, and I didn't see a clue anywhere.

The timed levels ruin it for me.

That WAS fun. And although the timing on a few of the levels was frustrating, I appreciated the fact that you could try again immediately from the same level. So, yeah. I died eleventy hundred fifteen times. Beat that!

Some definite flavours of Haluz and Samorost showed through in this game. Love the art!
But:

The final boss-battle was a tad disappointing...

The graphics were good, but this guy is clearly a terrible coder. The motion paths are real basic, and there's so many examples of things that don't make sense, such as
That you have to put the left eye in before the right (twice). Or maybe that when you crossed the bridge on the ent level and he brings his fist down, you still die. Or perhaps the fact that you are immune to the timed deaths (what was the point of those anyway) when you're going through walking animation.
Oh, and the game just in general didn't make sense. At all.

I enjoyed the game, but there was some inconsistency. Sometimes the arrow appeared when you finished a stage, and sometimes not (you just had to click the guy instead). "Learning by death" is also not the most sophisticated game design. But, excellent visuals and sound, so, yeah.

I thought the game was visually gorgeous other than the jarring "try again" screen, which I grew to hate, almost enough to make me rage-quit.

I wish I could have turned off the music but kept the sound effects. And/or that they had separate volume control. When the music was loud enough to hear more than the drum plus the occasional flute sound, the sound effects were way too loud.

But I confess, I didn't like the music even when the volume was ok. It sounded computer generated (apologies to the composer if it was composed).
