DoraSynopsis Quest DeluxeEverybody knows heroes aren't born; they're made. And in Synopsis Quest Deluxe from Skipmore, thanks to a handy English translation from Benito C. (and featured in a previous Link Dump Friday), you can find out exactly how in this parody of the RPG genre. After all, everyone knows little boys are made of snips and snails, and puppy dog tails, but a traditional hero is obviously made of genre stereotypes, minigame puzzles, and cure spells. Use your mouse to select your stage from the menu on the right once the game loads; each one is actually a tiny level that you have to solve to proceed. Move with the [arrow] keys, and interact with the [spacebar]. Follow the instructions given at the start of each stage, but don't expect a serious, epic game; Synopsis Quest Deluxe is strictly bite-sized and absolutely ridiculous to boot. You'll have to think outside of the box and remember the stereotypes of ye olden RPGs to succeed.

Children of the Playstation generation, do not adjust your monitor; what you are seeing is a slice of the past, when graphics were simpler, blockier, and NESier. The last "traditional" RPG of this sort I can actually remember playing and enjoying was on the SNES (gesundheit!), so this is a bit of a throwback even for me. It seems like there's no quicker way to get adulation these days than to slap a retro visual package onscreen, but Synopsis Quest's shining star actually comes from its desire to poke fun at its source material. Everything from ransacking conveniently placed pots to one-liner NPCs who have nothing better to do but walk in place all day waiting for your heroic bottom to saunter through and bring a brief thrill into their otherwise empty lives. See, you're making the world a better place already! I knew you had it in you. Now go and fetch me ten rat tails. Chop chop, there's a good Chosen One.

The game's biggest source of irritation is actually its sticky, clunky controls which makes otherwise simple stages more annoying than they would typically be. I get that it was originally made for mobile phones, but when porting something from one device to another, you should take the time to make sure it performs equally well on both or you leave yourself open to criticism. Synopsis Quest Deluxe is far from unplayable, but it isn't exactly streamlined either. Still, for a small package of gameplay, Synopsis Quest Deluxe is funny and charming; certainly worth a look for any of us who were burned by a Fire spell in our youth because we forgot to bring an extra Phoenix Down to the battle.

Is this the same as "Synopsis Quest" from the link dump last Friday?

At first I was excited (since I enjoyed "Synopsis Quest" last week) to see a "Deluxe" addition, but it appears to be the same game.

Regardless, it was a fun game, and worthy of a play-through.

Very clever and charming. Takes me back the the ol' Zelda and Final Fantasy days! :)

Seriously, is it just me or does anyone else like the way level two works?

... and with the real, authentic 8-bit sound ...
(*_*) I think level 8 is my favourite.

I love the Act like a Hero level. Couldn't stop laughing.

Cute little game. 8)

Like how the game is mostly a remake of old Zelda games.

ChaoSpectre April 12, 2010 2:51 PM

I believe the references are akin to... old Dragon Quest or Dragon Warrior games. Going to assume Dragon Quest because of the title.

"Please refrain from posting spoilers online"? Greeeeat. That would mean I can't get help on Quest 22, "Open the Door."

Reply

@ ChaoSpectre:
true, but i was referring to the princess in the hero's dream(Link to the Past) and the look of sword and shield (Either GameBoy Color games).

Reply

Totally Dragon Quest/Warrior parody. The dream princess and the sprites are just as much references to these games as they are to Zelda. Everything else is right out of the DQ textbook, though (modulo the FF airship), so I think they were definitely going for DQ.

Cute game, totally makes me wanna play Zelda again. Got through the Create a Hero in a few tries, don't know how it works, so I guess it's just luck. The Sunken Treasure is a bit tricky. Am I supposed to get a Game Over on the last quest? (the real ending) No need to give me the spoiler, just wanna know if I've really finished the game :P

@ChaoSphere
Aren't they the same games, just one is the American name and the other being the Japanese name? I do admit that this Hero looks very similar to the one from those games over Zelda, though - this guy doesn't look a bit like Link. It also makes me think about the Hero from Gaudia Quest (Retro Game Challenge).

@Bryce and everyone else that needs help with the game
You can all reference MoonlaughMaster's Walkthrough which is in the third comment down. No spoilers? Too bad ;P

Yeah, I said in the Link Dump that I loved the Act Like a Hero level, and immediately knew what to do. Man, it's amazing

That stuff is still left to steal, with citizens not caring if every prisoner on Earth escaped prison and stole the their house.

[Spoilers fixed. -Jay]

Is there any way to get the last character..after "hero"? Great game, by the way!

Reply

@TheMusicGirl

I just got it, without even trying!

Class: Monster; HP:9; MP:9; ATK:7; DEF:8

I remember seachin' everywhere for the treasure(on the ship level) until I realized I had to wait a sec(one of those doe moments I guess).

Can someone help me? I can't get the game to work/load (the ads work fine by the way) on Chrome or Firefox. Clearing the cache doesn't work either.

Absolutely loved the "Act like a hero" level. Apparently, we've all been there...

Again, not to cause trouble, but there seems to be some inconsistency in the JiG policy for posting spoilers/walkthroughs. For reference, see my comments on Labyrinth:

https://jayisgames.com/archives/2009/03/labyrinth.php

The explanation given for not posting spoilers for Labyrinth is that the request came from the game's creator himself, and and "we wish to honor his efforts as well as enforce them ourselves." Now, Synopsis Quest's author requests the same courtesy, and we've got a big ol' walkthrough plastered right under the "play" button.

As with Labyrinth, I'm not commenting on whether we should post walkthroughs; only perhaps some consistency in respecting games' authors.

The controls are terrible, but the game is still very fun. :D I liked the very last level... heh, I was trying to do that on level 23. XP

RedRevolver April 16, 2010 1:20 PM

I did all of them myself, bar two. :) Well pleased.

Reply

I rather liked the authentic feel that the clunky controls gave to the game, it is very like playing a SNES game. :) Annoying, but right for what was created. I loved this game, it was hilarious.

Reply

I actually believe it is a Zelda reference. I mean, look at the hero's hat when he's sideways!

Reply

last level? how does it work?

Reply

Metay: As it shows the final form of the boss enter

left, right, up, down very quickly on the final screen before it fades out, also you will hear a sound effect cue to help you out more
