Don't be afraid! Though we draw ever closer to that freakiest of holidays, Spoopy Saturday has three free indie horror games for everyone from the scaredy cats to those who giggle at even the goriest of ghosties. We've got a house you can't escape from (even though the developer is known for escapes... ), a disaster where a little girl goes missing and you seem to have some serious psychological trauma dogging your steps in addition to monsters, and finally, a masquerade party with a little bit of romance and a lot of really skimpy costumes.
Ao Oni - mygames888 might be known for stellar escape games, but maybe you know their other cult classic? Available for PC (and possibly for Mac users via RPG Hub), in this adventure game that's gone under several huge revisions over the years, a group of kids wanders into a mansion on the edge of town (because that always turns out so well) and find themselves stalked by a bizarre (no, really) creature that pursues them throughout. Despite some unintuitive puzzles, Ao Oni has such a huge fan following that it's resulted in a slew of fan-made games with their own unique spin on the concept, but also an honest to goodness feature-length film released in Japan. You go, little blue nose dude! Different versions of the game, which differ drastically from one another, can be found on the official wiki, though spoilers may abound.
Ascension - Quick, what's the best place to take your little girl? If you said "the shadowy corporation you work long hours at", then congratulations, you qualify to be the protagonist in this side-scrolling action adventure! Though maybe that's a little unfair, since Atty has no choice... with his wife gone, there's nobody to watch over his sickly daughter, and he has to work nonstop to support her even though she resents him never being around. But when the lights go out and Atty finds himself seperated from her, he has to find her back, dealing with monstrosities along the way in the dark. Well illustrated and written with a wonderfully creepy atmosphere and some surreal psychological elements, this title by Magnesium Ninja is well worth checking out.
Halloween Otome - The star of this adorable otome visual novel (available for PC, Mac, and Linux) is the envy of everyone when she wins an invite to an exclusive two week getaway Halloween party that's going to be more than a little star-studded, but she's not exactly excited to go since she's nervous around people... though she changes her tune when she hears about the good food that'll also be there! With nine different endings and three possible (all male) romance options, Halloween Otome is a little light on interactivity apart from minigames and sporadic choices, but it's a light-hearted game that'll appeal to someone looking for something seasonal and sweet.
