DoraSlenderIf I were allowed shed all semblance of professionalism to write what I really thought, my review for this game would just consist of "nope nope nope nope nope nope nope" and some choice bits of shrill, panicky, improvised profanity. I've just been playing the nightmare adventure game Slender, by Parsec Productions, who apparently hate sleep so much they decided to make sure nobody can ever close their eyes again. Based on an internet-birthed urban legend (we hope), Slender stars you as a faceless, foolish explorer armed only with a flashlight, lost in the woods at night, searching for eight missing pages. Use the [WASD] keys to move, the mouse to look around, and hold [left shift] to sprint. Just click to pick up any pages you find, and right-click if you think turning off the flashlight will help you somehow. You might be lulled into a sense of security by the quiet evening and the familiar sounds of nature. The more pages you gather, however, the more it becomes apparent that you aren't alone. If you do happen to make contact, look away as quickly as you can, but you may only be delaying the inevitable. It sees you. It wants you. It will reach you wherever you hide. I hate you, Parsec Productions.

Slender is an exceptionally simple game, but it wields its atmosphere and pacing with such formidable intensity that even those unfamiliar with the original story will be creeped out. As of this writing, Slender is in beta, and to be frank, it sort of shows, since the model for the titular being isn't particularly scary if you really stop to look at it (though this is planned to change), and the gameplay is fairly bare even if the pages do appear in random locations each time. Its slow pace combined with the disorienting landscape and how hard on your eyes it can be also means it won't be for everyone. Played with the lights off and headphones on, however, and Slender's use of increasing tension and the sense of lost vulnerability it manages to create makes it far and away scarier than many big budget titles out there. If you like slow, creeping, unexplained horror, then this one's for you, and you're welcome to join me in my protective pony pillow fort after.

Slender Strategy Guide

Map

Basic Tips

  1. A key strategy is to know how to get to each location quickly. No matter how well you play, if you get lost, you won't complete the game.

  2. Once you know the map, plan a route between the landmarks, and practice following it as quickly and efficiently as possible.

  3. Your torch has a battery life of around 20 minutes. It's unlikely that you'll finish the game if you take this long.

  4. How fast Slenderman moves towards you is determined by how many notes you've collected. Taking too long will increase the difficulty, and his speed, no matter what.

  5. Jogging slowly drains your stamina, which replenishes gradually after a pause of one second.

  6. You can sprint for a short time after getting scared by Slenderman. This drains stamina faster, but helps you get away faster.

Survival

  1. Looking directly at Slenderman for too long allows him to get you. Get a solid object between you and him and back away.

  2. If you see static, Slenderman is somewhere close! Stronger static means you're looking more directly at him, or are closer to him.

  3. Don't visit the bathroom maze except as either the first thing you do, or the very last. The dead-ends and abrupt corners mean you're unlikely to get out again if Slendy is behind you.

  4. Keep your flashlight switched off for as much of the time as possible. Once you know where you're headed, switch it off and walk in the dark. Slendy finds you faster while your light is on.

  5. Avoid jogging too much at the start of the game - save your stamina for when you need to run. It does regenerate, but slowly.

  6. Slenderman teleports around the map, but can only jump to locations you aren't directly looking at. This includes behind trees ahead of you, though.

  7. Some players will line Slenderman up with a tree, so that he's directly behind the tree as you face it. You can then walk backwards away from the tree to put some distance between you. This trick isn't essential to win earlier versions of the game, but becomes more useful in the newer builds.

  8. Never walk backwards unless you're using the tree tactic mentioned above and know where Slender is. Any other time, you're likely just to walk into him.

  9. Once you have Slender in your sights - at a safe distance - you can stand still to regain stamina. Ideally, keep a solid object between you and him, but keep checking he's still there as you don't want him teleporting behind you suddenly!

Note Locations

Notes can only spawn on landmarks. They will never spawn on random trees. There are 10 possible locations, and 8 notes to find, so two locations will be empty on any playthrough. Locations are:

  1. On the house by the red truck.

  2. On the blue truck.

  3. In the tunnel.

  4. On the red tower.

  5. Inside the bathrooms .

  6. On the wall shaped like a +.

  7. On the big tree in the middle of the path.

  8. On one of the oil tanks.

  9. On the 6 tall wooden pillars.

  10. On one of the big group of rocks.

Your initial goal should be to learn where each landmark is relative to the others, enabling you to plan a route straight through them all.

Hidden Modes

  • Day Mode: Play the game again, but in daylight. The map is a lot less creepy, but you'll probably still jump. There's no need for a flashlight.

  • $20 Mode: Slenderman will sing to you when you look at him.

  • These modes don't change gameplay in any other way.

Oh Slender Man, If you didn't want people stealing your diary pages, you shouldn't leave them randomly scattered about a forest.

This is a great little piece of atmospheric survival horror. There truly needs to be more of these types of games out there. for me this rates up close to "Amnesia" and right next to "Hide"

When they release the alpha, I hope they do (as Dora has already stated) make the Slender Man more scary as well as giving the game more of an ending after collecting the eighth page.

TIPS:

Get to know the area before collecting any pages. Even though the pages appear randomly between 10 different locations upon entering a new game, knowing your surroundings is key.

If you find that you need to create space between you and slender, face him and back away. Your vision will get blurry, but if you're able to put a tree in your field of vision but still be facing in his general direction, he won't be able to move and you can catch your vision & breath back.

This game has already gotten quite a bit of attention on youtube.

It's a great game and has a good atmosphere, but it's not -that- scary. People make it seem like it's the worst thing in the world.

I love this review so much! haha!
And I will definitely play Slender. It sounds pretty awesome!

I have to say (and this surprises even me) that this is the scariest game I have ever played. I had never heard of the Slender Man before this so I had no idea what was waiting for me in the woods, thus the first scare was the worst... but even after seeing him in his Beta glory the game still freaked me out. A bit like the fear I get when setting a mouse trap, the anticipation that it might snap on my fingers is worse than the actual pain. Knowing that he's there even though I can't see him. Spine tingle hell.

Full marks for atmosphere though I only ever managed to find 3 pages at the most and didn't really find any incentive to keep trying.

Isn't the Alpha the version BEFORE the Beta?

Reply
Ruesiken August 6, 2012 8:42 PM

@inheritance.fan

The word "Beta" in terms of technology means a product that's not fully complete (around 70-80%) and is sometimes put out into the community to have a blackbox effect. This tactic is used to acquire feedback on how the creator/maker should complete their product. Upon completion it is released as the Alpha version, even if there is some slight patch work to tidy up (IE: bugs and glitches.) the main product won't have any new content added to it.

Think of it like wolves, weakest being the Omega and the top dog is the Alpha with the Beta right beneath it. Hope that helps :)

@Ruesiken

In my experience, game development releases typically go pre-Alpha, Alpha, Beta and then Gold. Pre-Alpha is usually a prototype or "proof of concept" release. Alpha typically represents the first-playable release, which may not have final art but is suitable for initial play testing. Beta often has near final art and level design and may even be released to the public for additional testing or review. Finally, Gold is the release to manufacturer/mastering (RTM) that represents the product as consumers will see it.

Can someone who has played the game answer my questions?

1. I LOVE scary games, but for story and atmosphere only. I detest cheap jump scares. Does this game have jump scares, or is it safe to play?

2. How "scary" does the Slenderman himself actually look in the game? I don't want to spend my time looking at some horrifying face I can never get out of my head.

I don't consider myself a "baby" about scary things. I just prefer some types of horror and try not to expose myself to other types. This game interests me but I won't try to play until I know this information. Thanks to anyone who can help :)

@Dora:

Thank you so much for your quick and informative reply! I'll keep thinking about playing now that I know what you told me. Slenderman himself doesn't sound "too" scary from your description, and I'll see if I can stomach the jump scares.

As I said before, I'm very interested in the story and the atmosphere, so it might be worth a try.

Slow creeping horror? Well as someone who has bought every Lovecraft-related card game she can find, I'd say that's definitely up my alley!
Are there a lot of jump-scares though? I love unshakeable dread, but I can't stand things just popping out at you from nowhere. It's cheap and it stresses me out too much for me to have fun.

Well, Anna isn't registering anywhere except for my paypal account and Ib is being a freaking nightmare just to install, so screw it. They've freaking broken me. I'll play Slender. I no longer care.

Some of these hints are wrong.
Slenderman will walk towards you when you're not looking at him. So looking away is a BAD. IDEA.

I have a question about the game, does slender man only spawn after picking up the first note or will he spawn after a limited time of walking around doing nothing?

@Dean Pash, if you have not found any pages after a while, he will start following you regardless.

Plagiarism October 9, 2012 5:46 AM

Dora, you made me sad - not knowing the source game (called Hide, made by Andrew Shouldice), from which the so called authors stole the whole idea is one thing... but aggravating it with writing such an enthusiastic description which suggest that we looking at some new and original material is more than annoying.

Not sure about exact dates, but I know that the original game, Hide was out at least since July of 2011. Alone in a forest at night, nothing else to hear just ambience and your own breathing, looking for notes to read, while some evil creature(s) start to chase you as you progress from note to note... sounds familiar? Should be, because you guys even selected it for a Weekend Download at August of 2011.

You should play Hide to see how much that larcenous Plagiarism Productions ripped off.
Or better yet (and no offense meant), you should take a few minutes googling around before writing a review, so credits could go to the original source of idea.

Thanks for your understanding.
