Demakes and PuzzleScript go together like ice cream and sandwiches. The latest puzzle game to get the retrofication treatment is Deadly Rooms of Death (DROD), Caravel Game's classic top-down monster stabbing series. Puzzle Script DROD by Lukas somehow manages to capture the spirit of the original game, complete with baddies to hack, falling floors to rush across, and twisted passageways to navigate. All in the space of a few big, chunky pixels.
Use the [arrow] keys to move through each room. You can rotate your sword (the giant gray thing floating around you) by tapping [X] followed by the [arrow] keys, which is necessary for stabbing some enemies. The [Z] key will undo your moves. Puzzle Script DROD is turn-based, so each time you step the world reacts, usually in the form of monsters getting closer to you. Kill all the bugs in each stage to complete it, then celebrate by playing another level!
This is an Awesome Combo!!
@Lukas: Are you working on the other monsters?
I would probably like this game except the controls are really annoying. Why not just have normal controls, arrows or wasd for movement and q/e or something for rotation?
And a level number would be nice, too. For instance, I'm looking for help with "I once cleared out the king's dungeon..." level, around 10?
It's the one with the door button in the middle of the floor, bugs above and below.
This is interesting, but the actual DROD (especially Journey to Rooted Hold) is one of the greatest games ever in its elegance, simplicity, story and degree of challenge. I hope this puzzle script version brings some new players to the series.
Silent George: activate the switch with your sword horizontal, and start backing up. After your back is one square away from the wall, you only want to move vertically. With a bit of trial-and-error, you can sort things out so you never wind up with bugs past your sword. After you pick enough of them off, they'll line up neatly and you'll be able to take care of them.
The level after that has me stumped: I can kill the top six bugs with the first trapdoor, four more with the second, but then I'm in an empty room and running to the hallways leaves me cornered. Help?

@John Harvey:
Kill the first six bugs.
Point your sword West.
Move North, West, North x2, South x2.
The remaining 3 'free' bugs should be in a backwards 'L' formation.
Now move West, all the way North, then West.
Point your sword South.
Move West then South.
You should be good from there.
I actually got that about an hour ago! Now the next level is giving me grief. If someone can tell me where my column of golems is supposed to go--two from the wall, or four from the wall--that'd be nice...
8 golems and a roach
this is not exact directions, but it gives you an idea of how to solve it.
you cannot get them all in a row or if you can I cannot figure out how
so instead we do a work around. Get all but the second from the top golem in a row. You will be moving vertically only with no pauses for sword rotation until you get to the top. If you can get all of the golems in a row 4 spaces from the left wall or rather 3 blank spaces between the left wall and the golems all except for the second from the top golem or another lower golem then you are golden. (that second from the top one is too far back to get him in order) Once you get all but one in a row then you should be on your last one and go to the top. angle your sword to the right, take them out all the way down, don't leave yet, now you need to move up and down until that last one joins the row, then finish him off. Killing the roach is easy now. As long as you only went vertically and only stopped at the very top to move horizontally and rotate your sword then the roach should be able to follow you to the bottom.
Oh, wow! Just came to JayIsGames to look for a few new puzzle games and stumbled across my own humble demake, how awesome is that? :D
I would have loved to do more monsters and I know the controls are really messy, but I'll just blame both things on engine limitations. And yes, the original is a lot better, so go check it out!
stuck on level "I sometimes wish I hadnt", please advise
