Reader reviewPixel PopThe following is a reader-submitted review:

Nitrome continues its relationship with MTV Arcade with their latest, Pixel Pop. It's like a rhythm-based Wario Ware, in which you play colorful mini-game levels with a musical timing element. Destroy attacking fighters and tanks as Godzilla! Stake vampires as they rise in their coffins! Um...eat...stuff. It's all here, with three difficulty levels across four distinct stages, a different song in each level, and a final "mix-tape" stage that surreally switches context between the stages over the course of the song.

All you need is your mouse. There are some levels with a motion element, but by and large, it's one-switch action. It's no DDR, though; clicking in time to the beat yields to complicated click-hold-and-release patterns, all melded smoothly into one motion. And all to a soundtrack too infectious to sit still to.

Analysis: I think we can skip over the part where I talk about the graphics and sound that have become a staple of Nitrome's style, except to say that the C64 references have never been as explicit.

Pixel Pop strikes a delicate balance between adding novelty and complexity to a rhythm game on the one hand, and remaining comprehensible on the other, and it is a qualified success. Toward the end, the tasks can become almost too intricate, to the point where you are too distracted by the kinematics to notice how they tie together with the on-screen action, or with the music. At the same time, the precision of the timing increases sharply between difficulty levels (from downbeat to upbeat to off-beat), making for a steep and sometimes frustrating difficulty curve.

This problem is alleviated somewhat by the fact that each stage in a set emphasizes some of the same parts of the rhythm, and they share some conceptual similarities—they all might require you to anticipate the beat, for instance. Thus, the biggest hurdle is the first stage.

The timing of the game is thankfully hiccup-free.* I noticed the animation or sound sticking occasionally, but it all resynced to the music quickly and flawlessly, though a few sound cues seem to mute on occasion. There are one or two bugs that can be exploited to the player's advantage, but they're very difficult to find.

All in all, Pixel Pop is a polished, quirky and entertaining title, if you have a decent sense of rhythm. I heartily recommend it.

Play Pixel Pop

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Walkthrough:
Easy:

Just chop the watermelons when they are ABOUT under the hand. When it comes to the apples, count 1, 2, 3, 4 and then chop on 4. And remember, don't chop anything black.

Punch or kick the army when they are in the target, but don't let them get past your foot or fist!

Just jump normally when it's just a normal cactus. When there's 2 cacti, double jump by clicking when in air. When it gets to the cactus then the cacti, jump when over the cactus.

This three slot level is also easy. Just predict where the next mouse will be then get ready there. If the mouse is in another place, go there quickly.

Use the steps above to help.

Medium:

Just quickly stake the skinny zombies. When it comes to the fat zombies, stake once then stake twice the next time 'round. When it comes to 2 fat zombies then 2 more, stake the first 2. Stake every coffin the next time 'round and then just stake the one with fat zombies.

Dip the biscuits and cookies. Biscuits need 4 go-ups. Cookies need twice that many.

Count 1,2,3,4 to help you. Also, the U.F.O makes sounds to help you.

Blow the berry people into the bottle. The ones that are closest need one blow. Count 1, 2, then stop on 2. Ones that are closer to you need a longer blow. Count 1,2,3,4, then stop on 4.

Use the steps above to help you.

Hard:

Play Simon Says with the cats. Remember the sound they meow on. Bark on the same sound.

Click when you come across a worm. On a fat one, click and hold. When it comes to the fat ones on each side, pull one, wait about 1 second, then pull the next one.

When the sushi comes to you, open your mouth. Wait till it is in then close. When the thing on a cloud comes, open your mouth, wait till some of it vanishes inside your throat, then close. When the hot dog comes, wait till it vanishes inside your throat 3 times.

Count 1,2,3,4, then grab the ghost. Click and follow him and let go over the chamber. When it goes up and down, go up and down with it. When it goes all over the place, follow it slowly but keep up.

Use the steps above to help you, and you've won!!!!!!

Tips Tricks, and A Walkthrough for Pixel Pop!

General Hints!

  • Most levels are forgiving on the fact that they let you click after the object(food, farmers, melon etc.)

  • The game is NOT synched to the music, it is synched to the music's BEAT.

  • Try counting "One, Two, Three, Four" in your head, tapping it out, or clicking(if the stage you're on doesn't take hearts away for a "wrong" click.).

Walkthrough!

Easy!

Easy: "Fruit Salad"

Click every beat(this will help you keep the beat, but DO NOT click when a bomb comes! You'll have to resort to tapping or some other beat-keeping method.

Easy: "Dino Dance"

Try to keep your mouse at the very center so you don't have to move much when you have to alternate between punching/kicking. Try to keep a beat just like in "Fruit Salad".

Easy: "Cactus Caution"

This is quite hard, but to keep the beat, he'll double jump. Just try to guess when you will land.

Easy: "Mouse Mash"

Keep clicking on every beat, just like "Fruit Salad". This shouldn't cause many problems, just remember to keep clicking at the beat even when you're moving the floorboards.

Medium!

Medium: "WeightWatchers For Vampires"

This is quite hard at first, but the best thing to do is play it over and over until you can remember when the vampires come out!

Medium: "Beat o' Biscuits"

This is very easy actually. You can't really lose. :D

Medium: "Cows and Farmers? What are they?"

Click just after the cow/farmer passes the point where you are supposed to click. It's much more reliable this way!(For some reason)

Medium: "Blue Berry Bottle"

In some ways this has nothing to do with the music, but it does in other ways. Try to listen to the sounds the cloud makes. One full loop of the sound is a for a short distanced berry, 2 loops for a long distanced berry.

Hard!

Hard: "Dr.Siamese's Original Experiments"

This I find incredibly easy. Just try to keep the beat. and remember to move left and right.

Hard: "Early Bird..."

This is quite hard, just, as always, try to keep the beat, and remember to hold your mouse click to drag the bigger worms.

Hard: "Sushi, Hotdogs, and Allsorts?"

Don't get distracted by the mouth! Concentrate on when the food hits and leaves the line before his mouth!

Hard: "Who Ya' Gonna Call?"

This is VERY hard so don't be worried if you can't do it the first few(okay, loads of) times. Just do it again and again until you know when to click and what path the ghosts take.

Mix-Up Tips!

Try these stages again and again and again and again... until you know how everything is choreographed and you'll be alright.

I like it but simply can't get past the second level... Difficulty curve? Yeah!

See, this is one of the reasons I seriously hate Nitrome. I always have problems with the graphics sticking, or the game not working in some way.

However, I think once this sorts itself out, this may end up being unusually creative and fun on their part...

Reply

I want to like it. I really really want to like it. The graphics and game concept both strongly appeal to me and hey, it's Nitrome! I love Nitrome! I also love rhythm games - and I'm usually pretty darn good at them if I do say so myself.

But for some reason I just can't get into the groove of this game. Every time I start to get the beat - which isn't easy, since the beat is pretty muted for a rhythm game - it switches up, lags or just downright doesn't accept my mouse clicks.

I hope Nitrome can improve on the concept with a re-release or Pixel Pop 2, but there's a lot of work to be done before then.

Reply

This is great! Just when I start to think that they cannot increase their diversity, this is released (and only two days after Ice Breaker).
This is a very big chance, as the music has never played much of a large role before.

Also:

The end screen was delightfully colourful.

However, there are two things I wonder about:
-Why does the mix-up of the Medium levels consist of the Easy levels? (I'm assuming everyone else has this too).
-And how is the row of four double cacti possible on the Easy/Medium mix-up mentioned directly above? I always lose two lives on the stage because of this.
-On the dog level (first of Hard) I find the dog (left or right) whimpers and loses me a live every now and then, even when I click at the right time (this is instead of barking).

Apart from these, it is a refreshing game. It makes me wonder what Nitrome will produce next...

Reply

Heh, Boris, thats me XD
I'm stuck at the part at the siamese dogs, they bark automatically without me clicking!

Reply

That's way more enjoyable than it has any right to be.

Reply

No idea about the cactus on the Medium mix-up, I noticed the same thing... you have to lose lives there.

And, same feeling on the cat/dog Hard level. I can't get more than 10-15 seconds into it. Also, if you fail and retry, it glitches and barks when you don't click anything, costing you lives. Then when I do go to click, it whimpers when I want it to bark... with no clue what the difference is between a whimper or a bark.

Reply

It doesn't work for me. When I press a button nothing happens, until I move the pointer outside of the game, and keep moving it. While it's moving then the game reacts, and shows whatever effects, transistions to get to the next part of the menu, but only while moving the mouse around outside the game. Weird.

You might want to mention Rhythm Tengoku in the review, since Pixel Pop is based on that game more closely than Wario Ware.

""Pixel Pop strikes a delicate balance between adding novelty and complexity to a rhythm game on the one hand""

Am I missing something? In what way is this novel or complex? Just click in the right millisecond ... thats all I can see, pretty unimaginative too me.

Reply

Yeah, I was also going to say that it's heavily inspired by Rhythm Tengoku. Those games are awesome!

hahaha wowwwww. i love this game! although i do agree with the comment about there being a difficulty curve. but i'm doing fairly well. i seem to be good at games with beats. like DDR. :D

Reply

First, I'll say this is a very fun game. Being a lover of rhytym games, I'm really happy that Nitrome finally decided to make a music-based title.
Although the music gets a bit repetitive after a while and there being a few, mostly harmless bugs, the variety of tasks and their enjoyability made it an unique game. After all, a mix between Wario Ware and Elite Beat Agents just can't go wrong!

For the people having trouble with the second mix-tape, just refresh the page. I had that problem too, and refreshing solved it.

Also, did anyone else find the cloud's voice (fourth medium level) being very similar to Homestar Runner's? I know I did! :D

Reply

The monster kicking and punching to the sound of music is hilarious! :D

I really like this!

Reply

I do have a critique, though. Sometimes the music doesn't seem synchronized with the game, wich makes it harder to concentrate on the timing.

Just got #54 on the high score list (I'm "Lover"). I love games of this variety! The music's enjoyable, too. Nitrome should release the soundtrack from their games on iTunes. I'd buy it.

I was doing fine (even with a bit of a synch problem) up until the ghost level. My touchpad simply isn't wide enough to track the ghost from the right side to the left side without picking my finger up.

Even despite this, I'm going to go ahead and say it worth the play. Thank you for reviewing it!

Everyone knows I am a big Nitrome fan. I mean, I only post on Nitromes games here at JIG, and I even have the only Nitrome help site!

But I can't stand this game.

Rhythm games are usually fun to me, but something's odd on this game. I can't get into it. And were the graphics meant to be pixely?

Also, it's way too hard just on level 2, as I can't get past that. All in all (and I may be the only one), I think Nitrome could've done better (for once).

Reply

Unlike most nitrome games I didn't like this one that much. The difficulty is miss matched (the Godzilla level was hard but cacti and cookies were easy), the graphics are bad (though the huge pixels do help you time it), the vampire level was cheap because you often lost 2 or 3 lives in a row. It doesn't really seem nitromey. Still, it's OK and it was released soon after ice breaker, which was awesome.

I just played again and got #14. I'm generally pretty good at rhythm games, but the ghost level is NOT laptop-friendly.

...Cats and dogs with two heads? A cloud blowing berry-people into a giant bottle? A bird running around a giant square apple and yanking out worms? Some of these levels make more sense than others, that's for sure.

Reply
strayerrrr January 9, 2009 9:59 PM

I think this game is pretty easy. Not too easy though, I might add. But I must say I DESPISE the ghost level. I'm getting so annoyed with it.

Reply

Although this is originality that i haven't seen in nitrome lately, this one throws me off a bit. I'm not a big fan of their new designer, because the games are slightly loosing the cuteness factor. I personally think Magneboy was the pinnacle on their graphics. The rhythm factor was extremely off, and, being a musician,I couldn't stand this game.

Reply
dinosaurus January 9, 2009 10:42 PM

Unbelievable.
On the second level, I failed to punch the first airplane that came, and i lost TWO hearts.
When I followed with failing to punch the SECOND airplane, i lost THREE HEARTS. Thus losing the game..

It seems to me that people kept complaining on how easy the games they were releasing were and then toughened up, making them TOO complicated.

It took me 10 tries to beat the first level, and I only chopped one of the 3 apples that were thrown, so I could only survive on one heart.

And i hate that dinosaur.
I used to love dinosaurs.
But now, I have changed my mind. All thanks to Pixel Pop.

A watered-down version of Rhythm Tengoku... They missed how Rhythm Tengoku feels like you're adding to the music, rather than playing along with it and not really affecting it at all. Oh, and the music was a lot better than in this game. Step one to a good music game is good music, Nitrome. :(

Reply

it's such a cute retro-styled game, but the only thing is, i'm not so good at timing. godzilla's arms and legs need a workout.

Reply

The godzilla level is so hard even on easy. I'm usually good at rhythm games. :(

Reply

Great game! Nice music too.

@Alex:

You have to click when the airplanes/tanks just hit your hand/foot. And the godzilla level is just one of the easy levels, you can't play that level on another difficulty.

Reply

Mine seems to take longer after the cat level

the loading bar seems to just stay on and im not to sure if its loading or stopped allowing the game to load XP

Reply

The vampires are easy if you get the rhythm however as one attacks you, It covers up the screen and deals 2 damage. Because its blocking the screen you cant see the other ones.

All right, this is weird... I'm on Firefox, flash 10 and for this and Ice Breaker, It loads then endlessly loops the Mtv on this one, and the Nitrome sign on Breaker. Especially annoying on Ice Breaker, because the hammer sound keeps going. They both work on our school computers on Explorer, though...
Any ideas?

[Edit: Try disabling any ad blockers you have. Also, if that doesn't work, try uninstalling FP10 and go back to FP9. I've heard some reports of FP10 having issues with some games, and I'm not sure if that's been worked out yet. -Jay]

I'm finding level 2 impossible. I'm sure I'm clicking at the right time to the music (although it's really hard to tell) and even if I just go crazy and click click click I still don't get it right.

This game looked really promising but I'm so disappointed :(

Reply

Is anyone else having trouble on the

Godzilla round? I have tried both counting in time with the music and waiting for the planes and tanks to be squarely in the cross hairs, but neither seems to work.

Reply

I love Nitrome games. It's nice, too, to have a website that you can let your kid access without worrying what they'll see.

But this game is at the bottom of the heap.

The music and actions don't sync well enough to be able to count on them, I'm not one of those who enjoys the retro qualities of heavily-pixellated graphics and annoying MIDIs, and the timing is just too picky. (I got to level 3, but just flat lost interest.)

I finally made progress when I turned the sound OFF...that's not a good statement for a game that's supposed to be based on the sound.

Nitrome, you're far too talented and clever to spend your time on this stuff.

Reply

@Just me, Hush. It is just you who doesn't like this game. (Other then some 5 other people.)

I'm stuck on the medium mix up when you have the 3 fat vampires on screen at the same time. I can (And would) get from full health to lose there. I have gotten past it twice, (Proof: UFO is after it.) but I restarted the level due to low life.

Reply

Also,

Godzilla:

Click when the plane or tank is right in the middle of the crosshair.

And if anyone needs it,
UFO:

Click when the cow or farmer is just stepping out of the widest area of the hole.

Reply

Argh, is anyone having trouble with the vampires? Everytime 2 vampires come side by side I mess up because it won't let me click twice that fast...I have to delay the click in order to kill the vampire.

Reply

The level with the conjoined dogs was definitely the first really challenging one. It took me a while to figure out the timing, especially for those sequences that skipped beats.

The easiest way I found to nail the timing was to meow along with the cats! It really works!

I still can't beat level 12 - the one with the bird picking out the worms. I'm having a really hard time with the bottom worms for some reason. I could swear the timing for those is a little bit off... very annoying!!

Reply
FeralQuack January 12, 2009 10:06 AM

I definitely run into the problem with the conjoined cats and dogs. If I fail the level and restart, the dogs will occasionally whimper *without* having pressed the mouse button.

Again, I had my hands off the keyboard, and did *not* press a button; the dog will randomly whimper.

Reply

I can't get past the vampire/corpse level. It is so hard!

Whenever I miss one, I get 2 lives taken off me and I don't get it! Can someone please help? Also, if I hit a big one but miss with 5 lives, I just get game over. Please help!

Great game. I found some problems though:

-When replaying, the medium/hard Mixups still consisted of "easy" levels.
-(refering to the above)the cactus jumping sections have some impossible obstacles.
-The actions for the eating level was off beat
-on the berry level, the berries seem to miss even though it goes into the bottle.
-on some levels, you lose multiple lives for one mistake

If you STILL need help hitting the planes/tanks on the godzilla level:

just click with the beat. that's how i beat it.

Um.

Hey, Reece? Thanks, but I'm an adult, and don't need to be hushed.

Especially when I'm voicing my opinion (which I think I'm allowed to have, just like you) -- and pretty nicely at that. I didn't trash Nitrome (or any other posters, I might add). I love Nitrome games, and comment very favorably on most of their games. I didn't really even trash the game -- just said I don't like it, explained why I feel that way, and commented that Nitrome is capable of doing so much better.

The fact that "like 5 other people" have similar opinions would suggest that I'm not throwing out some wild-eyed accusation...but that there are issues with the design of the game.

Glad you like it -- I don't.

Well when the berry person's eyes meet the dotted line that's when you click and when the little stub on the top of their heads is aligned with the arrow you release

Reply

Okay, I don't know If I'm the only one, but I'm having trouble understanding the directions to the ghost level...Can anyone help me?

Yes I CAN! I understand the directions but not how to pass it. The ghosts show up and have a pink target around them, and it slowly gets smaller to the beat. When it turns white you have to click and hold on the ghost and follow it around w/ your mouse. Then when its over the portal thingy you let go.

And also I would like to say... On the eating level (the guy w/the mustache that eats) did anyone else notice that it's just an electronic version of another (Nitrome) game's music? I don't know what game, but the music is familiar...

Kay ppl did you kno that your comps could turn on you and MAKE YOU RESTART THE WHOLE GAME FROM LEVEL ONE RIGHT AFTER YOU JUST FINISH THE GHOST LEVEL?!? ugh now I have to start over

Reply

HOWEVER I did play the game again and I gots a high score!!! I'm number 69 (as of right now at least) and I'm ... uh... Nessie. (duh)

Reply

Kay I'm really bored so I'm gonna make a walkthrough for all of the levels (well almost) even though you've probably already passied it.

well on this level I beat it by listening to the beat (it somewhat helps if you play an instrument- violin for me- and you can easily tell the beat) Otherwise, you can just click when the watermelon or apple goes right underneath his hand (or her, idk)The apples are extremely hard to cut but it is possible

Yes as many others have already said you click when the plane hits the dino's arm, but for me the tanks could be kicked when it was in the crosshair (Or yes, you could go to the beat)

This one is pretty easy you just click when there is a small distance between him and the cactus (Tho I must say when he starts comin down to land his beard stops coverin his privates-gross I kno)

Well considerin you are in the same row as the mouse (duh) just click when the entire rat-mousey thing (excludin the tail) is inside of the box

This is just a mix-up put here not to confuse anyone

I don't kno any cheats to this one- you just click when it's over the vamp (And anybody else that has read Twilight would be rather offended)

Hooray finally there is some cookies in here! You don't even need the music- there is this little poppin sound whenever you dip it andyou can just count those. Four pops for the cookie and eight pops for the square cracker.

This one is ridiculously easy you just click when the cow/hunter or farmer thing is in the center (widest part of the circle)

Berry people! Just click when their round bodies are anywhere on the dotted line and then release when the stem thing is lined up with the arrow/triangle. (This level pretty much ruins the whole pixel illusion because the dotted ine and arrow/triangle are not made from pixels)

This level is a mix-up of all the other medium levels, I put this here so as to not confuse anyone

Its basically like the comp version of simon says but w/two-headed cats an dogs. It's really easy if you know the beat and have a good memory (You can have a horrible short-term memory and still pass this!)

Ugh this level took me a few tries like I said if you can read music and count the beat then its about 1 (or 2, depends on how fast you count) beat(s). Wait scratch that you don't need to kno anything just count to two starting when the worm pops up

This mustache dude chokes on like anything so you have to be careful- like the rules say use the line to keep track of the beat

I hated this level- no despised it but still... There aren't really any secrets to this level that I kno of... I haven't even passed it yet!

Just do this last mix up (well I think I haven't gotten past the last one yet) and Hooray hooray you have won!

Reply

On the bird/worm level, I found that it helps to listen to a metronome. Just make sure it's set on 96 or 100 (bpm, or beats per minute). If it conflicts with the beat, or makes you offbeat, stop using the metronome.

BTW, google 'metronome' and click the first entry.

If you liked this game, then you ought to try Rhythm Tengoku. Unfortunately, you would have to import it or download a rom, since it was only released in Japan. On the other hand, you could wait till April for the DS sequel to come out in America. I don't know if I'm just repeating what someone else has said, because I don't have the patience to read through all those comments. If I am repeating, sorry. Anyway, has anyone else noticed that the first level of Pixel Pop is very similar to the first level of Rhythm Tengoku, except with an easier difficulty (except for those stupid apples) and crappier music?

Is it just me, or is the UFO level completely and utterly BUGGED?

The farmers can simply IGNORE the blasts I shoot at them from my pretty fly-in-the-sky machine, and if I miss one cow because of clicking too late/early, the next cow automatically doesnt get hit AT ALL.

And the farmers have the power to ignore my ray of destruction! Anyone else got this bug?

Save for that, the first time I played this game, I got stuck on Godzilla killing tanks. But when I took the game today, I managed to play up until the UFO level without dying once. Its fun, if you give it a chance, but its really a game to play when you're bored, or when you need a quick round of something else than that stupid Toxic 2 level that doesnt wanna get beaten.
The levels take too long, though.

Uuuuugh. Anyone got any tips for the UFO level?
