JayPanicA little bit of mindless fun to follow up that wonderful yet frustrating brain teaser puzzle from Lars. This one from a newly formed, independent game design and development company in The Netherlands, Coin-Op Interactive.

Panic is a simple and stylish arcade game made in homage to a classic on the Commodore 64, Astro Panic. Made in Flash and sporting an impressive new soundtrack as well as eye-pleasing particle effects, Panic plays like a cross between Space Invaders and Pang.

The objective is to shoot all enemy spaceships (UFOs) that enter in wave after wave of increasing number. The higher you hit a UFO the more points you earn. And you have just three (3) lives with no power-ups.

Analysis: With intuitive controls and immediately understandable rules of play, the game is quick to pick-up and play and thus can provide that desirable dose of instant gratification during your afternoon lunch or coffee break. The graphics are simple and plain, and yet the monochrome backdrop is nicely contrasted by splashes of red when an enemy is destroyed. It is a well-made game that features a high score list that also lists the highest score attained for a single kill, adding one more reason to return for just one more go.

With graphics and code created by Sander van der Vegte, Panic is simple, mindless and classic arcade fun.

Nice game, nothing beats classic arcade fun.

I'd agree, everyone likes good old-fashioned arcade gaming. Anyway, I took first on my second try and put it down. Notice, your score goes up for how high the ufo, but, also, the multiplier is determined by how fast the ufo is going. Every stage's ufos are the same, except each time they add one more that is faster until it's too much to handle. My trick when there got to be 10 or 11 ufos at once was just start at the side of the screen and just shoot. Clearing out three or four ufos, no matter how much they're worth, will make the stage easier and less cluttered, so you can aim to increase your score more easily with whatever ufos are left.

wow that was a little more difficult than I initially thought. In the first few levels, it seems you can do no wrong, but after about the 4th or 5th things kind of get hecktic; at least for me. Oh and I'm not sure the score coralates to the height, I got high scores for UFOs that had been on the field for a while and were close to the ground, and some low scores for high UFOs that had just come on to the field. I think it has more to do with the speed of the ship than the other variables, in essence the harder it is to hit, the more points you get for hitting it.

i am #6 on top 50 "bob"
might not stay there long but for now i have a claim to fame!

Well, here's the scoring pattern.

Killing a UFO at the top: 100
Killing a UFO at the bottom: 0 (If possible without death)

Maximum multiplier = Number of ships on the wave
Multiplier for ship = Rank for slow speed.

1st Slowest Ship = 1x
2nd Slowest Ship = 2x
...
13th Slowest Ship = 13x

The lowest I've been able to get is 5, I doubt anything less than that is possible, especially given that the tank seems to have a higher hitbox than it appears.

*larger hitbox, not higher

Yes those two high scores are me, and I haven't even played a dozen times yet. But it's definitely one of my favorites now!

You mean Space invaders and Pong, right?
Great little game, though!

took me ten tries but made it on with a score of 30799,
enough to put me in the # 37 slot , but u ppl will probably kick it butt. but still i made it on :):):)

Balrog - no, I meant Pang due to the way the enemies just bounce around the play field until they either hit you or you hit them.

How is this game like Pong?

Mmm, pretty fun and hectic. Lots of vectors to predict. I scored ~35,400, which was #3 at the time.

Tips for the higher levels: Take out the slowest ships first, so that they're out of your way. This goes against instinct, because the fast ships seem more threatening. Also get any ships that are coming down at a shallow angle; These can give you trouble.

Note that when you score a kill, the ships freeze for a second, but your tank can still move. Take advantage of this to move into a safer spot. You can even move through a ship safely when it's frozen.
