Out of this World, developed by Seething Swarm, is a short but unique action game centered around shifting play mechanics. Surprisingly, the game doesn't start with a roto-scoped teleporter accident, but rather with two lovers leaving a fancy restaurant. They aren't named in-game, but since they look British, let's call them Ron and Hermione. Anyways, Ron and Hermione decide to go for a ride on their rocket ship, but, son of a gun, wouldn't you know it, aliens decide to kidnap the fair maiden. So its up to you Ron, with your shock of red hair, your badass longcoat, your awesome umbrella, and your shooty-blasty space gun to rescue her from the extra-terrestrial's clutches.
Though the controls of Out of this World modify to keep up with its changing gameplay, generally you move with the [arrow] keys, whether on foot, on a rocket ship, or in a hulking stomping mecha. Likewise, you'll use [A] and [S] to attack, be it with umbrella, blaster, or alien space bomb. Power-ups like double-damage and invincibility are there to be collected, and the glowing hearts will refill your health. Out of this World has gorgeous visuals and some interesting gameplay ideas, if not particularly challenging ones. The pace is measured, almost meandering, which does get tedious at times. Still, those interested in an artistic game with a bit of variety and just a touch of experimentation will find themselves quite chuffed.
i got stuck on the lift where in front got 2 green balls on the wall..i cannot glide to the high wall..i cannot reach..
I hoped somewhere there be a reference of a game with the same name :)
[Perhaps you missed it in the review? It's there. -Jay]
Yet another game that turns out unplayable because of keyboard issues...
[We didn't experience any keyboard issues when play testing or reviewing this game. If you're using Chrome, make sure you're updated to the most recent version. There were some keyboard issues when playing Flash games in an older version of Chrome, but that has been fixed. -Jay]
I also experienced some keyboard issues. The controls are not very responsive, and this was most evident in the boss level (the beast). There was such a delay between pressing UP and jumping that I just kept dying when it shot at me... it was SO annoying that I ended up just quitting! A cute premise overall, and was actually on the easy side up until that point... they need to work on the controls though.
Sasha, I gave up after about 25 tries at that same wall in the Belly of the Beast. Too bad, the game wasn't bad, but that glide thing is a bit flaky.
By "keyboard issues", I meant keyboard layout. Impossible to play this game with an AZERTY keyboard, and for some reason it doesn't take into account when I switch to QWERTY.
@Jay
No I meant I was happy to have seen it when hoping to find it: "accidental teleportation to an alien planet", thanks for the nice reviews :)
[Ah, ok, I misunderstood. Thanks for your comments and support! :) -Jay]
Soooo bad! Very weak gameplay, way too many powerups make it unchallenging for any but the clumsiest platform gamer. The music by "Smokestack" was unbearable. Cute characters but absolutely no story attached to them. Try again and skip the awful grunge band music this time.
Easy but fun. Unfortunately I fell out of the bottom of the screen fighting "The Beast", and subsequently am stuck in darkness, with no recourse except to refresh the page...
Original title FTW.
With such a variety of gameplay styles in such a short game, I find the less than perfect platforming controls good enough. It's a nice experience..
I also apparently fell into the belly of the beast and could not get out of the darkness.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS GAME! Made it home safely so Ron and Hermione could live out their lives and make little Weasleys! ;D Great game anyways!
Damn... that boss battle made my fingers sore.
