MDenNeon LayersNeon has a certain glitz to it. Whether it's glittering in the lights of Las Vegas, shining in the sign of a convenience store, or just brightening up the periodic table, neon always adds a little extra to everything it touches. It was only a matter of time, then, before someone mixed the brilliance of neon with the brilliance of puzzles.

Ozzie Mercado (SoapAintNice), creator of blueprint brainpuzzler Open Doors, strikes again with a tri-colored conundrum of an action puzzler, created for Armor Games.

In Neon Layers, you must guide a ball from its starting platform to the glowing exit by cueing and cutting power to three sets of "neon layers." The red set is activated by the 1 key, the green by 2, and the blue by 3. Only one set of layers can be turned on at any given time, however, and it's up to your ingenuity and timing to manipulate momentum and bounce the ball to the goal.

To complicate your quest further, gravity switches are scattered about the levels. These switches reverse gravity when the ball passes over them—but only when power to their color set is on. As the levels go on, new obstacles will try their best to foil you, and only the most skilled will complete all 25 levels.

Analysis: If there's one word that describes Neon Layers (beyond "neon" or "layers"), it's solid. The physics are well-programmed, the levels are well-planned, and the music is well... good. The puzzles are difficult at times, but not impossibly so, and there's enough variety to keep you going through all the levels.

The only major quibble is the keyboard control system; while mouse control is available, the rapid pace of some puzzles makes it infeasible. It takes a bit of time to cement the button assignments in your head, but once you do, you won't look back.

It's a good game! I like the anti-gravity switches. I found something out on level five:

The anti-gravity switch isn't needed.

It's a really cool game!
They made a really simple idea look very good in this eye catchy game.
I must say that I always have loved Neon games, I don't know what it is, the colors, the lights or the futuristic look. but they got this element that attracts me.

It is a hard game though, the reverse gravity switches can also be switched on/off with the "color buttons" witch makes gameplay a bit tricky when you just miss it by having the wrong color selected.
Levels are misleading to... Sometimes you don't need the "Reverse gravity" at all, or sometimes you don't need to use the platforms.

anyways they've done a great job on this one

Finally beat it, takes a lot of luck on the final levels. Not much of a congratulations screen, just the credits =/

I am stuck on 9. My ball either rolls off the edge of gets caught in an endless bouncing loop in the green in the middle. Can anyone help?

Reply

level 9 is hard. I don't even know "How" I can get to the goal.
please help :(

Reply

9 is easy

just get it to bounce in the middle between the two green v's

I cannot get 13 either

Reply

Level 13 is easy when you know how

Press 3, wait for the ball to bounce off the two bumpers, and then press 1, the ball will bounce off the red bumpers into the exit.

Reply

Just did 13.

You only use blue and red. When the ball hits the blue vertical bumper, switch to red. The level will soon look incredibly easy.

lvl 6 help!!

Reply

Lvl 6

press 2, watch ball roll toward switch, press 1 when appropriate to trigger switch, watch ball roll towards other switch pressing 2 when the ball is closer to the arrow not the bracket, ball should fall to top of top ramp, watch it fall, press 1 as ball is falling. It should hit the little red platform with enough force to bounce into the exit. It may take a bit to get.

You need to make sure the ball gets to the top of the top green ramp to get the most momentum.

Finished the game, thanks for 13.

I think this may be the first time I ever beat a game on this website without help from anyone else! Woot!

Wow! That's a tough game. I didn't make it through many levels before I threw up my hands and went and baked cookies instead. Very nice idea with the neon signs. :) I found the gravity changes a bit disorienting, but I'm not sure how it could have been done better. Maybe a pause in the ball movement and a screen flip?

let it stop in the divet instead of changing colors while it is still moving and then quickly change them so it can get to the exit.

15

2 so it can get past the blue, 3 so it hits the gravity arrow, 2 so it hits the green bumper, 3 so it hits the blue at the top and goes the right direction and 2 again so it goes down the conveyor.

i cant get past level five i get to the edge of the exit sign and it wont do it and i dont get it when you say divet

My 13:

Blue, hit both bumpers at the end.
Green to hit the middle "hair bumper".
Quick switch to red and bounce for the win.

Did this a couple times, though I think the green switch timing has to be pretty sharp (and either before or after it hits the blue again...not sure which).

I hate this game, really. Great concept, nice artwork, interesting puzzles, and glitchy to the point of making it unplayable at times. Like when it doesn't take into account the key you just pressed, and you had only one tenth of a second for it to work. Almost made me break my keyboard in frustration.

I simply renounced to finish it, I'm stuck at level 24 where you have to press keys twelve times, each one within a short window of time, and any mistake is fatal. With keys responding only when they dare, it's nearly impossible.

Also, I hate when you can't cut the music without cutting the FX. The interface looks like it is possible, yet it isn't.

Reply

I hate that I can land on the exit sign 30 times and it still wont take me to the next level

be easy on yourself. change to green and then when you get about halfway down the other side of it change to red and it should bounce off into the exit. It may take a couple tries.

16

change to red, drop down to the green arrow about the middle of the conveyor, change to green to hit the green arrow. Then change quickly back to red so it goes down the bottom side of the bottom conveyor.

Help for level 15?!

Level 14:

Press 1 so that the ball rolls down the line and hits the gravity change. Quickly press 3 so that the blue line will stop the ball from floating away. It bounce around for a second and then hit the gravity arrow. Quickly press 2. It's go down the line, hit the gravity arrow, and go into the exit sign.

Warning: Spoilers!

Solution for numbers 24 and 25

24:
2 then 1 pretty fast then leave it at 1 and the ball will just roll off and hit the exit.

25:
Just keep pushing all 3 keys really fast and don't stop 'till you win.
