Link Dump Fridays

DoraSo it's Friday, and you ask yourself, "Aside from this double venti mocha lotta frappawhatsis, what do I need to make my morning complete?" Answer being, of course, a ninja, a rusty pizza cutter, and a time-travelling mushroom. We know you didn't know that, but that's okay. That's what we're here for.

... well, that and the fact that without constant attention we'd wither and fade away. But then the same is true for any media personality. So everyone just stop paying attention to Chuck Palahniuk and everything will be okay.

  • One Hour BackOne Hour Back - It'll take more than a lovely plinky-plonky piano solo to win me over. This point-and-clicker is about Noah, a little mushroom dude, who has a time machine, which is broken. You'll need to travel through various places, collecting objects to travel even further back, by doing favours for people. The dialogue suffers from a few too many typos (or translation errors), and the controls often feel clunky and unresponsive (kind of like me first thing in the morning). Still, it's a cute game that would have been so much better with a cleaner, easier interface.
  • Ninja RunNinja Run - Inspired by Canabalt, this run-til-you-drop platformer is a completely historically accurate rendition of ancient Japan. Run, jump, double-jump, shuriken, and hook-shot your way through unpredictable terrain to get a high score. You can withstand several hits before you die, but it goes without saying that you probably don't want to plummet into the fathomless blue void that makes up most of your surroundings. There isn't really enough variety to keep it from getting stale long before you actually die, but it's a clever spin on a popular bit of gameplay that I'd like to see polished and expanded a bit more.
  • Nightmare MazeNightmare Maze - This odd choose-your-own-adventure style text adventure reminds me a bit of movies I've seen based on the novels of Clive Barker; it's kind of cool, but nobody knows what's going on, and there are a bunch of people in art-house berets watching it with me. There's some interesting imagery to be had as you try to navigate the series of nightmares the game throws you into, but everything is a bit too abstract to be really scary. Throw a barefoot Asian girl with long, obscuring black hair or some stone angels in and we'll talk. Actually, no we won't, because I'll be hiding under the table crying and hugging myself.
  • Amateur Surgeon 2Amateur Surgeon 2 - [Parental Warning: So very, very not for children.] A fine Scottish heritage has convinced me that I am equipped to handle any medical emergency with a combination of junk I found in my kitchen and old wives' tales. Unfortunately, people rarely seem keen to let me test this theory, so it's always nice to play a game that knows you're dangerously unqualified, but lets you operate on people anyway. (Again.) Just as ridiculous and gross as the first, but if you were a fan of the first in Adult Swim's cheerfully offensive series, that's probably good news for you. Hooray!
  • The Gun Game 2The Gun Game 2 - The sequel to 2009's aptly named gun simulation is here, and it allows you to customise your avatar, which is why the icon is an accurate representation of yours truly. The original was little more than an elaborate webtoy with accurate representations of real world firearms, but the sequel adds a lot of new material such as levels, perks, and jobs. It's actually a bit like what would come about if the creator of Super Crazy Guitar Maniac were a gun nut instead of a guitar prodigy.

Ah, Weeping Angels. Good times.

Woah, the tutorial in Gun Game 2 should have noted how to change your class of mission; I wish I new about them puzzles sooner.

In the second level of One Hour Back, I seem to be stuck. I have a book, a statue, and a lemon. I can click the lemon on things, but it doesn't seem to do anything. There's a tree on which I can make leaves grow. There are two people for whom I've done quests and that seems to be everything.

@Ezra

I was stuck as well but you have to

drag the lemon to the wiring of your watch.

Reply

Ezra: The lemon is used as a battery.

Reply

Oh, I have to put it on top of the device. I only tried clicking it on the device.

I really liked Alan Probe Amateaur Surgeon 2, it brought in more aspects to work on, and I thought a lot of the things you had to do were funnier than in the first game, in particular during...

The Pig Stage. The typing part was HILARIOUS. xD

I think it's sad that One Hour Back isn't very good.

For the life of me, i can't beat "target time" on the gun game...I feel stupid. I swear it's impossible with the pistol they give you.

@gmpilot: Just go to puzzles, and save up for a shot gun, then get slug rounds.

How exactly do you make the cogs work on one hour back? the big wheel is turning but this is stupid.

I don't like the Nightmare Maze, because I've gone through numerous results numerous times, and I imagine there are three outcomes that end the game:

Lucidity: 100%, Insight, 100%, and Fear, 100%.

I have achieved FULL fear numerous times, and I got 100% Lucidity once, but I haven't gotten even 80% Insight. And with the limited choices, I don't know if there's even a way to do so.

I even Google searched for walkthroughs, forums, and hints. I didn't look TOO hard, but I couldn't find anything.

If someone has figured this out, great, and please post how. But until then, I've wasted nearly an hour on this, and I no longer even care about the character. Shame.

I liked Nightmare Maze, but I can't get my insight to 100. Does someone have some tips on this?

Dragonflie June 25, 2010 10:06 AM

You were right in your thinking, Jacob. At the end of my story it said,

The dreamworld is a strange and foreign place. You did not reach 100 insight -- were you to do so, more of the story would be revealed.

Reply

*Jacob*

It is possible to achieve 100% insight and end the games that way. I'll post at step by step walkthrough here.

1. Let your spouse sleep
2. A dream! You try...
3. Go to the fireplace
4. Will a fire into being
5. Ask him what he wants
6. Fire your weapon
7. Head towards the fire
8. Fight them
9. Stop the rock with your mind
10. I want my life
11. Turn around
12. Make the flowers grow
13. Ask them what is happening
14. Argue with them
15. Call to your father

That's the way I did it. Might be other ways too :)

Aha, found the pesky last coin. Man these games can be tough on a monitor running a large screen size.

Reply

Too much pixel hunting on One Hour Back, had to repeatedly use tab to find stuff.

Reply

Did you guys click on the gears?
Was a good game in story and concept, thought the coding for minigames were good. But yeah it looked bad.
Hope the hint helps.

Reply
Black Drazon June 25, 2010 10:46 PM

Man, I really need to do something about my mouse. The corkscrew in Amateur Surgeon 1 was a joke, but with my mouse the syringe in 2is downright unplayable.

Reply

Yeah, I too wish One Hour Back was better. It's a decent game poorly implemented. The minigames are a problem, though. The mafia pigs aren't so bad but the bug is just sort of "well, maybe you'll die, maybe you won't, wait and see!". And a few of the Korean objects were nearly impossible to find without cheating, especially when you can't pick up even obvious objects until you've done some other action first.

I also couldn't figure out why the Scientist

knew me but wouldn't say more until I swept up his nasty hair. For a moment I thought that zone was actually the end of the game, and it turned out Noah was a janitor all along, who had purposely escaped his time.

Reply

so i feel stupid but in One Hour Back where is the last coin?

I agree with Grant Thurston, I found Amateur Surgeon 2 funnier than the first one.
In part because of the innovations, and in part because the difficulty of the missions had more to do with finding the correct course of actions than with performing every gesture perfectly and quickly.

Also, loved the secret patient of act 1.

It took me a long time to figure out how to close wounds, so I'll post it here just in case :

just use the vacuum to cover them in blood.

I actually liked the On Hour Back... except that it ought to have a "save" function.

Some hints:

Glasgow

Click on everything that is not photo.

In scene 2, there is a coin balancing on the right stair ledge.

Note that the hole in the ceiling, scene 2, is not photo...

Gears:

Make two gear chains, one to each of the big gears in the bottom of scene.

Rotate the gears by holding the lever(?) in the upper right corner

When the big left gear rotates, a fastening point will appear. Use the rod to connect it with the other chain of gears.

Rome

To light a fire you need a log, a flint and a stone.

Stones found in scene 1 and 3.

The lemon can be used as a battery.

Note the loose wire ends from the time machine!

Korea

To open the red box you need to find all the writing utensils on the list first.

One of the list items are on the roof in the first scene

One of the listed items is stolen by the smoking guy. Put some opium (looks like yellow dust)in the pipe and he'll return it.

When all the list items are found, a few things will change and make it possible to open the red box.

Scientist

Find the closet. Sweep. Hunt the bug. Aviod the bug.

Yay I gave up on One Hour Back after the dozenth attempt at getting past the pigs. The fact that the responsiveness of the controls, and the distance that the old lady lagged behind you, were not even remotely predictable made the game infuriating. Really really bad implementation of a good concept.

I need help on Amateur Surgeon.

I have BEATEN Amateur Surgeon. I have a total score of 1,147,137 points.

My tools are fully upgraded (except for the 0-tool, the metal detector or whatever, because I didn't need it to work better, so I was saving it for last). I have A's on almost EVERYONE. Except for the unlockable characters, which I can't unlock. So I'm guessing you need all A's in each chapter to unlock them, which makes sense.

Enter my frustration.

In Act I the ONLY CHARACTER I CANNOT ACE is Scarlett Throbbing. My ABSOLUTE BEST score was 46,275, which was I think 254 points away from A--though on the average, I make about 2500 points below A. I have played through her ten times. I don't know WHAT I could do any faster, as I average about A MINUTE for the round, leaving me with 4:30 on the clock. I don't know why that isn't fast enough to warrant points. I don't make any mistakes, drop anything, or cut anything anywhere unnecessarily with the chainsaw. So I am furious and exhausted. Has anyone even figured out the scoring system?

I can get an A (essentially, a perfect) on the FINAL BOSS OF ACT 2 (not the unlockable character), so why should I continually fall short on a middle character from the easier half of the game? If anyone has actually gotten an A, PLEASE tell me how.

In Act II, the same goes for Cap'n Splinters (54,658 in 1:40 as best score), and though I have only played it a few times, the Aide (99,364 in 2:02). Thanks in advance, I'm having no luck online. I wanna play the unlockable characters!

Incidentally, I did it all on my own without a Walkthrough EXCEPT for the final boss:

Dwayne Pipe

If you are stuck:

When the white caterpillar/Star Wars sand monster/whatever jumps up at you, I tried attacking it with the cutter and chinsaw, just wave the mouse around, and when it's "knocked out" with the stars:

You need to use the syringe on one of its eyes. Success results in an empty socket. I know, groooooosssssssssss

Much better than the first game, which I couldn't even finish.

*Jacob* June 26, 2010 9:55 AM

EDIT:

IN AMATEUR SURGEON 2, TIME MEANS NOTHING!!! Or, at least, very little. I took about two minutes to finish Scarlett Throbbing, even accidentally chainsawed into her while attacking the crabs (not long enough to warrent a reaction from the game or anything beyond a blood squirt) ...but full A. Go figure.

Reply

.......still no luck getting A's on Cap'n and the Aide. :(

Reply

FINALLY GOT IT! Nice end unlock, too. :)

For those still stuck like I WAS, here is the absolute last resort:

The secret to points is the "Awesome!" meter. Try to get as many as you can. By simply watching what the game rewards you for, you'll soon see how you can manipulate it to benefit you. Good luck!

I still can't open the red box in One Hour Back, even after

getting all the items on the letter list, and then going back in and moving the yin yang symbol onto the red box.

What am I still missing?

Reply

JIGuest, this was the toughest one to find for me as well.

Hint

There appears to be a blank shape on the red box in addition to the circle. You're completing a ba gua symbol.

Spoiler

It's on the top of the building/shrine the box is in. It's rather dark and hard to spot.

@Ryleigh, about the syringe for Richard Thumble, after you insert the syringe, you have to keep holding the mouse and navigate down the dotted line on the syringe until you reach the circle.

Hi,

I am the second student who works on One Hour Back. ^^ It's nice to see it around here. =)

As my friend told you, we have a forum : http://onehourback.com/forum/

and as I can see, my English is not so good and I made many mistakes. Please forgive me, I am Swiss and I didn't practice it for a while. It could be good if you tell me where I have to edit the text! ^^ Thanks a lot

About the pig, we planned to do it like this. Actually, we wanted that the oldest is slowier than Noah, and it's pretty easy to escape the pigs?! Anyway, come on the forum to discuss about it! =) We are openminded and we want to improve our first game!

Amateur Surgeon 2: I GOT IT!

I couldn't finish a thing until I read the ultimate tip for this game:

whenever you have to use a syringe (i.e. always) just click the left mouse button, then the right to get into the java option menu. Disregard the menu and go pointing on the end of the syringe track. Left click, and voila! You just injected/vacuumed the patient in a tenth of a second. And you'll get MANY A's like this.
