elle Legend of PandoraThieves. You hate thieves. When you were young, your parents died at the hands of miserable arrow-tooting thieves. Your early start into misanthropy thus initiated, you holed away in the mountains, rather dark knight-like with no intent to ever leave. But, as with all things, adventure bites you on the rear when you least expect it and the smallest things—like a missed morning newspaper—can change a life forever, birthing myth and Legend of Pandora alike.

Your first quest is a humble one but, with it, you're thrust into Francisco Ferreres' nostalgia-induced top down action adventure RPG, a world where chaos reigns and monsters are spawning like...something that spawns a lot. Zombies perhaps. Use fully-customized keyboard commands to navigate, fight and interact. The mouse is used when spending your coins at the shops or your experience points on your character stats page. Like all youths suddenly thrust into the hero role, you begin rather weak and armed with just a wooden sword so it's good that the first foes you encounter are likewise weak. Battle wins equal more experience which means leveling up and new stat points to improve strength, dexterity, vitality or luck. You'll also earn skill points to build specific weapons knowledge, scholarship, or activate special abilities acquired in your questing.

As you discover hidden treasures, complete quests and succeed in battles, you'll gain more riches. Use them to upgrade or change your weapon type, buy accessories or helpful potions. If you die in battle, though, it is game over; computer terminals scattered throughout the lands will allow you to save frequently so you can avoid lost progress. Plus, they allow you to teleport, for a fee, to any other portal where you have saved, which comes in handy toward the end as your journey sends you all over the map.

Legend of PandoraAnalysis: A reverent fandom of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda inspired Ferreres to create Legend of Pandora. If you have fond memories of old school Link or any other NES or GameBoy Color RPG hero, prepare for a hefty swig of déjà vu. On one level you'll be remarkably charmed by the familiarity. On another, some haven't I already done this, like, a bazillion times before? thoughts might start interceding on your joy. It's best to shrug them off and just let the inner child in you (the one not jaded by all these newfangled gaming devices) run amuck with abandon.

Story-driven quests help keep that abandon from feeling like simple random killing even as your main point of action remains hack-and-slash combat. These quests, on the surface exercises in altruism, provide narrative entertainment and have the side benefit of training for the exhilarating final swarm. While zombies, slimes and other monsters are abundant, nothing pops up unannounced. After hacking and slashing through a square of landscape, it's safely cleared until you've ventured far enough away that the defeated foes can regain their populations. This makes Legend of Pandora well-tuned to players who want to get through as quickly as possible while also providing a ceaseless means of training to those who prefer the grind-and-conquer method of adventuring.

Exploration is well rewarded although there seems to be shortage of treasures to discover in the dungeon crawling moments. It's a great rush to find them but of the occurrence of chests is rare and random enough to make their discovery less than beneficial. Smart training and money management make it possible to purchase the best sword in the lands before the half-way mark, so subsequent chests or quest rewards seem redundant after that. A variety of weapon training pathways—swords, axes, or bows—is appealing for diversity's sake although swords tend to be the easiest, most rewarded path while magic is virtually overlooked and not well-explained. Yet these quibbles also mean Legend of Pandora is designed for immense casual gaming enjoyment. Leveling up, acquisition of new skills and new quests happen frequently, giving a constant buzz of achievement to keep enthusiasm high.

Playing a game like Legend of Pandora in the browser is a treat. Ferreres' passion for RPGs also transmits over to the player; you can't help but get caught up in this nostalgic love of 16-bit graphics and questing zeal.

Legend of Pandora: Walkthrough & Strategy Guide

Settings/How to Play:

  • Saving your game and Teleporting:

    • You can save the game any computer terminal throughout the lands. It's recommended that you save often not only to ensure you don't lose progress if you die, but also so you can teleport to any other terminal where you have saved.

  • Stats&Skills, Inventory, Quests, Map and Options can be accessed by clicking on their icons at the bottom of the screen or by pressing the corresponding number on your keyboard.

  • Most the game is played via keyboard controls:

    • You can configure keyboard commands by pressing "5" on your keyboard to bring up the options menu. Then, to customize your controls, click on a command box then press the key you wish to use for that command.

  • Access stats and skills information by pressing "1"

    • Each time you level up, you'll be awarded 1 stat point and 1 skill point.

      • Stat points can be used to increase strength, dexterity, vitality and luck.

      • Skill points are used to train weapons skills (sword, ax, dagger and bow) as well as money collection, learning rate (student).

    • Learning Special Skills:

      • A skill point is also needed to learn the "push" and "swim" abilities...

      • After obtaining a manual, go into your Stats and Skills menu. You'll notice the ability to push or swim is still grayed out, because it has not been trained.

      • Select the ability then use a skill point to train it. You'll then know the Push or Swim skill.

  • Inventory is accessed by pressing "2"

    • Whenever you obtain/buy a new weapon or accessory, you'll need to equip it under this menu. To do this, select the weapon or accessory from your inventory list, then click "use/equip".

    • NOTE: When using a bow, arrows are equipped as accessories. Arrows of the same variety will reload automatically until you run out.

    • To use a potion, bring up inventory then click the item you want to use, then click "use/equip" to drink it."

    • You can also check how much gold you have through the inventory.

  • The list of quests you have received—both complete and incomplete—is available by pressing "3".

TRAINING TIPS:

  • You need to use a skill point to learn "Swim" and "Push." Before going on the quest for those manuals, be sure to save at least one skill point so you can learn the new ability as soon as you find the manual.

  • It's worth it to increase the "Student" skill early on. The faster you level up, the better prepared you are for the harder monsters and the fewer healing potions you need because you'll regain full health each time you level up.

  • Initially, train strength about 1.5x more often than vitality. Vitality is a significant stat for battle survival, but the harder you can hit, the sooner you can destroy the enemy trying to kill you.

    • In addition, you can mitigate lack of vitality by careful maneuvering on the battle field. Stand in the right spot and swing often enough, and you'll take less damage.

    • Monsters in the last stages of the game are extremely tough; every damage point extra will be needed at that point.

  • While you can use stat points to train vitality, if you increase sword skill enough, the "natural armor" skill becomes available. Then you'll have the option of using skill points to increase health. This increased health will be important in the last stages of the game.

  • Money Collector is nice if you want to make more coins with less hunting, but it probably isn't worth neglecting weapon or student skills. Faster kills equal more money faster, too.

  • However you do it, getting enough money to upgrade your weapon will be well worth it, as long as you don't have a better weapon than your strength or skills can utilize.

  • If you stick with melee weapons, you can train Luck and ignore Dexterity. Luck not only increases dodge chances, but it improves the chance of dropped items (such as teeth, claws and undelivered messages).

  • If you wish to use a bow, dexterity will be more valuable to you. It has a bigger impact on dodge chances and it improves your hits.

and something about those pesky brownish area boxes bet you didn't know that...

while all areas to the left of Doom Island and that one brown square above the Sewer management area are completely cut off, the right border areas can be filled in. All ya gotta do is...

start at Pandora's cave, go right one screen then up one. you'll see two coral squares in the upper right, get right under those, swim to the right aaaaaand you will move to the next screen standing on top of the coral wall. take a few steps to the right and you'll have entered "the Secret Zone Congratulations, enjoy your monster free wandering

WARNING:
if you swim too far south you will enter a white area and the game will freeze and you'll have to refresh the page. going east will also bring up a white screen but you can backtrack your way out.

However, go all the way north and you will find yourself transported to the lower rooms of the Leviathan Cave.

Aha! Very important secret area.

Labyrinth

You've read the push manual.

Go to the center of the first part of the labyrinth, with the row of gravestones. Knock off the leaves in front of the grave, go down, and raid the treasure room.

The other stash is after you get the swim manual. In mine it was a less helpful boost, but don't forget to backtrack nonetheless.

I expected to like this game a lot, but then I died right before a checkpoint and now I don't like it.

Reply

This game would be better if there was an automatic save and if the skills were more obvious or if monster regenerated quicker.

Reply

I've got some serious rock pushing problems. There's nothing blocking them, but they'll only go one space over. I should be able to enter these areas yet I don't think I can squeeze through.

Hello!
I have completed the "No Newspaper," "Lost Communications," and "Lost Son" quests and currently have the "Snake Hunter" and "First Blood" quests. I have neither Swim nor Push. The only enemies I have seen so far are Octoroks (their Zelda name - please Google it if you are unfamiliar), one snake in the village, and green enemies that look like dogs and live only in the forest. Can anybody please help me?

Stuart, you get the push skill later, in the

cemetary

just be patient :)

Reply

How, in heaven's name, do you learn the push skill?? I have the manual and I have 3 skill points I can use. I just can't figure it out :|

Reply

no way to go to the cementery or in the beach
how to? is there a secret entrance somewhere?

Reply

Can someone please tell me how to use the Pushing Manual? I have three extra skill points and one extra stat point, but the "use/equip" button is still grayed out when I select the manual. I feel like I must be missing something obvious...

Reply

Not a fan of the walkthrough, it doesn't help with not knowing where to go. I'm stuck on The Road To Leviathan Cave mission, I have no idea where the cave entrance is. I found a cave but I'm blocked by water as soon as I enter. Help anyone?

Reply

Well, I was going to cancel my earlier question, because most of those rocks were actually exits. And then I went to the northerly cave that seems to be a bonus... except I couldn't get out of it. Good thing I'd saved.

Overall there are scaling problems with money/exp which result in every battle becoming a grind, but nothing too serious for me. Others may find it aggravating. More annoying was the placement of side quests. Probably half of them start the counter *after* you've already made the kills / found the thingy / etc.

I really liked most of the map. It made me dizzy when it switched screens, but the sections were thoughtfully done.

Reply

Unfortunately for me, this was a frustrating experience. I seemed to find that the game was somewhat disproportionate between the player's stats and the enemies.

I found myself grinding to get the best weapon in the game and still having problems with enemies after that. Some quests have you kill 20 overly powered enemies while the reward is a less than savory weapon of lowered class.

I really wanted to like this game. I have an affinity for leveling up and becoming overly powered but even upon completion of the game, the "Ending" left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

For those of you whom are less patient than I,
Spoiler for the ending and why it does NOT work.

Despite this being a somewhat story driven game, there is no real ending. After spending so much time leveling and grinding, you are greeted with by a man in the final cave saying to the extent

"there is no ending, please donate."

It's fine to ask for donations, but there should have been a proper ending, (even if it's only chapter one.)
But it's the same formulae people are wanting time and again from most games.

The reward must be equal to the time expenditure on a game or greater to achieve notable status: Ending(reward) > Time playing. While not always true about every game, it's doubly so about story driven ones.

A better way to showcase this game would have been: To made a proper ending for chapter one, then ask for donations in support of chapter two.
Sadly for the makers, this might be "marketing suicide" because if you end your game on a bad note, people might be so charitable for a sequel.

While this review was harsh, I do hope it was constructive.

Reply

Awesome game!!

Finished it in a day. really good.

One thing that I found hard was to remember where all the vendors were. I want to find better goods, but could not remember where I had seen them. Anyone make a list of locations that had vendors?

Reply

Oh, same with the payoff of the side quests. In order to defeat those monsters, I need, say, a higher level sword, and then I'm rewarded with a basic sword. Lame.

Alas, I have baseball to watch, otherwise I'd do a little walkthrough adding. So here's the spoiler-riffic map.

At least, that's as far as I got. I still can't get up to those last areas.

Reply

Honestly, even with a low-level weapon, you can grind your way through all but the last levels, and that's only because you need a *faster* weapon. Just use strategy

1. Hide behind cover and just hit away. If you have no cover, you can use a big ole melee weapon to knock even the shooters out of the way, diagonally.
2. Trap them in a corner and whack away.
3. In some cases, mostly the dungeons and some forest bottlenecks, you can just avoid the enemies and scoot to the next screen.

You do need some timing (yes, it's possible to take on 3 or 4 at a time without a scratch), and will have to sit there for long minutes, but there's almost never a reason to die on this map, besides forgetting to buy poison antidote. This does assume that

You have been leveling up accordingly, because the strength and weapons multipliers will carry you the rest of the way. Don't waste too much on Dexterity unless you *plan* on sitting there and letting them shoot at you. And if you're out of money to buy stuff, then add some Luck and start beating the bushes.

I could've used a shop list too, though. Just 'cause I wanted to collect the weapons.

Uck.
Almost all of the graphics are stolen (most of the sprites and tiles are ripped straight from the Zelda GBC games with very minor changes, if any), the game consists of a long chain of bland kill/retrieve quests and fighting enemies with exceptionally poor AI, and even worse, I've completed an entire dungeon and not run into a boss. A game like this without a decent number of boss fights is like a burger without meat.

The battle system is brokenly easy, thanks again to the poor enemy AI. Basically all of them either move very slowly in random directions or move very slowly toward the player, making it a simple matter of standing in one place and swinging a sword over and over again. The only time you're in any danger at all is when you get stuck with an enemy directly on top of you and the game won't let you move out (which feels more like a glitch and/or the game cheating than it does anything approaching an actual challenge). You get so much money from just going and doing what you're supposed to go and do that, most of the time, before you can even begin a quest with a weapon as its reward you already have something way better than it.

Okay, okay. Honestly, there are worse games out there. This game is okay if you feel like doing grindy, repetitive, kinda boring stuff, which sometimes a person might feel like doing. I think maybe this whole game just rubs me the wrong way. It's because of the stolen graphics. If you're going to steal graphics from possibly the best zelda games of all time (namely, the Oracle series), you could at least steal a little more and give your game a good design with some actual puzzles, or challenging enemies, or an engaging story, or...SOMETHING.

Does anyone know how to load a save file on this game? There's no 'load game' button...I suspect it's done by clicking 'new game' and then selecting the save file, but I've put a lot of time into the game and don't want to risk losing my file.

Anyone know anything about these two areas:

--the tree-cave in the northern fields, right beside the shop guy? There are mushrooms you can't cut, and bushes you can't get to...did I miss something here?

--the two caves visible from outside Pandora's cave? They're visible on the same screen as the entrance to Pandora's, and one screen to the left. Initially I assumed I'd explore Pandora's cave, exit out of one, and the end would be in the other...but that didn't happen. Is there another way to them?

I have tried and tried and tried, and cannot figure out how to activate/enable/whatever the push skill manual. How? Please help. I had tons of skill points when I got it.

Reply

@shudog, I found that area first time through, but have no idea of how to pass the stones. How is it done?

Reply

@shelagh.smith The skill should appear in your Stats & Skills menu once you have acquired the manual. It's to the right of the Money Collector skill, and should be grayed out. All I had to do was click on it to select it, then spend a skill point.

@shudog Never mind, I stumbled over the correct method. D'oh, do I feel slow.

I also am having trouble using the walkthrough: the images do not actually help me find where to go.

Can someone please help me out with actual information? I've been through all the quests up to pirate island, I have a key in my inventory but no idea where to use it, and I don't have the swim manual or any idea where to get it. I have no clue where to go, and the map is huge. I cannot figure out from the image which little bearded guy assigns you the pirate island quest: what area is this? There is also a guy who tells me that the underworld is behind a stone, but there is no direction I can push it in that will allow me entrance. Is this the part I'm missing? Is it somewhere else?

Without some kind of hint, my only option is to go back to every single area and hope to find something.

This brings back some great memories. I'm not even all that concerned with leveling, etc. I will eventually finish the game, but just running around killing bushes and mushrooms for a few minutes puts a smile on my face. Thanks for this!

Okay, schmokie, you and I were maybe in the same boat. Here's what I managed, finally, after logging out and back in.

so, once you make it to the Leviathan Cave quest, you get a key to the fence, and enter the cave proper (just above the crab beach place). That cave has two sections, one where you get a key to open the other one. My problem was, I could not find the place to USE the key once I had it; I don't know if this is what's happening to others or not, or even if it's me or the game, but there was no keyhole until I logged off and back on.

Inside the caves area, there's a room with a ton of monsters that you exit at the bottom to get the key. Then you back to that room and head to the top, push a block out of the way, and enter the locked door using that key, opening up the way to the chest with the swim manual. For me, that top row just wasn't appearing, so even though I had killed everything in the room twice, and then tried to go up at each square of the room, it didn't work. The keyhole is sort of in the upper right, behind some blocks, one of which can be pushed out of the way.

I don't know if this helps, but hopefully someone will profit from my frustration.

I have to agree with both the lovers and the haters: nice retro visuals, clearly an homage to the Zelda series with lots of exploring to do. The finish of both game and story are very disappointing, though, with too many loose ends in both. They might as well have stuck up banners with 'please donate' halfway through the game.
I'd play the sequel, but am nowhere near tempted to fund it.

[whine]Please, someone, make a better map. The one in-game and the overview map in the walkthrough are too small to be useful, and the zoomed-in views in the walkthrough all look identical, so there's no way to tell *where* they are.[/useless complaint]

Does anyone know the deal with cave just to right of the save point on the Northern Plains? You need to be able to swim to get to it, but inside is a rock that won't move anywhere helpful and a mushroom that you can't chop down.

Thoughts?

I suppose it's quite a bit later, but perhaps that gives me some time to cool down. I should explain what I mean when I complain about the graphics being stolen wholesale, as opposed to being a good tribute to the game it's stealing from.

Clarence's Big Chance is an obvious homage to Mario games, probably Super Mario World in particular. But all of its graphics are original, and, way more importantly in my book, it makes use of the kind of mechanics that exist in the games it's a tribute to to give the player an actual challenging and fun game. It has its own slant, yes, but it could have ripped off the exact physics and powerups and I wouldn't have complained if the level design was solid and the end result was fun. That's my complaint here: It takes things from the games it's trying to be, which on its own I would probably be okay with, but then it doesn't do anything interesting or fun with them.

Bottom line: I would honest to goodness love to play a game that was the "Clarence's Big Chance" of Zelda tributes. But I would hate to play a game that was the "Legend of Pandora" of Mario tributes.

Always, game slows down causing glitch when you are dodging the crab with GOD Mode or other prehack cheats since I can't play all day long and you can't click for saved game slot.

I am completely lost with finding the swim manual. Where exactly can I find it? I think I might be missing a key as well, but I don't know where to find that either. The latest quest I have is "crab massacre".

Enjoyed the game, except for the ending, which looks like it's been updated, but it's still very simplistic. Anyway, up until then it was a nice world to explore.

Does anyone know if the Berserker skill is worth building up? Does it work with whatever weapon you're using, or only with axes?

@porkins.nmi - I found that little cave too, and couldn't get anywhere with it. :-(

What's with the sign inside the wall in the northwest corner of one of the Desert Cave rooms?

And finally, some tips for getting through the final cave:

In Pandora's cave, have lots of cure poison potions, and at least 50-700 coins. You need the money to escape the final room.

Some enemies in the cave move really fast. It helps to use a weapon with ice magic. Failing that, try to get two enemies to attack you at once; they'll bump into each other and that will slow them down.

When you reach the two sets of stairs, take the one on the right. Actually you can skip most of the entire cave - There's a secret teleport! In the room where you first enter the cave, with the robed guy and the save point, just walk around (without cutting the plants) and when you find the right spot, you'll teleport to the final room.

I found out what is in that unreachable screen east of Windy Village and north of Sewer management.

If you to to the edge of the screen and walk parallel to it into a barrier, sometimes you move about a pixel in before it shifts to the other screen, and then another pixel before a shift. It lets you climb through trees and other things if you are patient.

To see the area above Sewer Management, go to the horizontal screen edge between the entrance to Sewer Management and Windy Village. There is a brown stump and then a tree in Windy Village. On the Sewer management side, there are two trees. Get right on the seem between the two screens and walk east. The screens should flip back and forth and you'll slowly progress into the inaccessible map. There's some trees and plants and grass but nothing special.

Note that this technique only got me to the first square but I couldn't get fully into the free roaming area there.

You can see the map to the west of the islands too, by shifting between screens while pushing against rocks.

That area is all just blue water, but you can see some of the underground locations at the top of the map.

You can also get to the two caves above Pandora Cave.

Push against the cliff while shifting between screens and you'll slowly climb it.

They don't actually go anywhere, they are just cave images.

I'll leave it up to someone else to capture the images and host them.

Garbage. Challenge is replaced with huge hit point enemies, creativity is replaced with repetition. Movement bugs abound, and often paths lead to pointless time-wasting dead-ends. Terrible game that didn't deserve the extra attention. There's enough skill evident in the game that a much better game could be made, rather than dragging it out with excessive mazing and ridiculously long enemy fights. Scale of 1 to 10, this gets a 3.

The berserk hit works with both sword and axe weapons or only on axes?

This game is absolutely horrible. I rate it

"Should be hacked by everyone playing it if you want an enjoyable experience"/5.

This should be the poster child for what happens when you don't playtest your own games.

However, some tips for a more enjoyable expericne, go Axe or Sword. I prefer Axe. Pick one and stick to it. This is not a "tip" it is a requirement. DO NOT TRY AND BE AN ARCHER.

Side quests are useless, but do them in the beginning to get the Zombie Ripper (axe) as fast as possible. For each "drop" item, there is only one quest. Feel free to sell it after the quest is done.

If you can not find the swim manual:

You got a key. That door is stuck behind some stones in the Levia Dungeon. The bottom stone is pushable.

Finally, when you reach the windy village, stock up on tons of antidotes (Maybe 50 of them?). You'll thank me later.

I cannot get to the treasure in the labyrinth secret area. I push the 3 stones 1 square but then what? I still can't get through.

Using the tricks mentioned by others earlier, I was able to explore the whole world map, but I don't know how to upload screenshots here. Going north of the world map is a bit interesting..

You get to see parts of different dungeons/basements/shops, depending on which screen you're on. On a few of those screens, you can actually walk into the dungeon.

As mentioned earlier, going south of the world map freezes up the game, and going east of the world map results in a white screen and no further movement. Going west is similar to going east.

I don't know how to get the swimming manual? Where is it actually? Is it in the labyrinth?

Thanks

People say they can't find the cemetery.

That's because you need to travel around but you may be killed by the monsters. The best advice is to finish your quests and it would lead you to the cemetery.

Where you get the push manual?

In the cemetery. I forgot where in the cemetery. I think it is in the labyrinth. You will find out when you go there. Trust me. I didn't get it at first, but I figured it out. You will too.

Where you get the swimming manual?

In the Leviathan Cave. There would be a mission for this. First you get the key to the main entrance, then you would get another key. Once you find a key door which is blocked by the maze rocks, you could push one of them and it would slide, and you would insert your key. You would see some treasure boxes and one of them includes the book for the swimming manual and you could learn it.

Good Luck!!!

So I made it to the end of the game and went through Pandora's Cave. But at the end, it asked for donations to help create a sequel? Did anyone else get this or is there more to do? I came to what I thought was the last room of Pandora's gave and there were two basements of stairs. One brings you back to the start of Pandora's cave and one brings you to your father. I didn't find anywhere else to go. Anyone else?

Ok thanks!! Any idea when the next part is coming out?

While it does have its own charm, I felt really bored with the combat. It didn't even take that much time to accumulate enough gold for better weapons after going all in towards the "gold" skill. By the time I made it to

the Cemetery

it lost my interest completely and I went off to play Legend of Zelda. :P
