Layton Brothers: Mystery Room

JohnBLayton Brothers: Mystery Room is a crime solving mystery game from Level-5, the team behind the well-known Professor Layton series on Nintendo DS. While this incarnation may only bear passing ties to the prof's previous adventures, it's still a solid adventure game that will remind you of Phoenix Wright in some ways. Which is a good thing!

Layton Brothers: Mystery RoomInspector Alfendi Layton is a bit of a genius investigator. His new assistant Lucy Baker isn't as sharp, but she shows a lot of promise. You help Lucy and Layton solve crimes one case at a time, each more unusual than the last. And seeing how the first mystery is about a strangled woman with her hand in a sandwich, that's saying something. Cases take place in several stages, with you working through the investigation at each turn. It starts with the crime scene, allowing you to zoom and pan around an exact recreation while you gather evidence. Suspects get questioned, clues are uncovered, and eventually you get to j'accuse someone and follow through to get to the heart of the matter.

Even though most of the investigation is "on rails", there's still a fair bit of challenge to be found in Layton Brothers: Mystery Room. It's more of an interactive mystery than a traditional game in some ways, but it's written and illustrated so well you'll get drawn in all the same. The free download offers up two mysteries to play through, each one taking about half an hour to complete, maybe longer. Two separate in-app purchases let you buy chapters three through nine, which is a hefty amount of content.

Be ready to do some honest crime solving with Layton Brothers: Mystery Room. Moderate leaps of logic aren't out of the question, just make sure they're, you know, logical!

NOTE: This game was played and reviewed on the iPad 3. Game was available in the North American market at the time of publication, but may not be available in other territories. Please see individual app market pages for purchasing info.

  • Tap the inside of important areas (indicated by a dotted line circle) to zoom in for a closer look.

    • Any object with a white marker can be examined by tapping the circle over the object. The item and its information will then be added to your list of evidence and the marker will change from white to yellow.

        • Zoom in past the fourth dot on the zoom slider at the bottom of the screen to reveal the marker for the Old Note.

        • The note reads: "Bovine comes before swine".

      • Next, examine the dotted circle over the coffee table in the middle of the room.

        • Zoom the camera in at least half way to reveal the Pointed Note marker.

        • This note reads: "Hornless is the beast that leads the way".

      • Drag the down and right using to fingers to move the viewpoint to the bedroom.

      • Select the dotted circle over the bed for a close-up view.

        • Zoom the camera in past the fourth dot on the zoom slider to find the Crumpled Note marker.

        • This note reads: "Swine follows after canine".

      • Lastly, use two fingers to drag upward and to the right to look in the bathroom.

      • Tap the dotted circle around the toilet to take a closer look.

        • Zoom in past the fourth dot on the slider again to discover the Smelly Note marker.

        • The last note reads: "Horned is the last beast to go, the flames dying in its wake".

        • The second half of this note offers an additional clue.

        • The only area in the room where you've seen flames is the fireplace, so the note must be referring to that in some way. And what makes flames die?

        • Water, of course! And you just so happen to have four goblets full of water.

      • Now you have all the clues and items you need, all that remains is to put the information together and solve the puzzle.

    5. Put Out the Fire

      • Drag the viewpoint left using two fingers to move it to the lounge.

      • Tap the dotted circle over the fireplace to take a closer look at the area.

      • Zoom the camera in halfway and select the Fireplace marker.

        • Prof will allow you to select which goblets to use on the fireplace, but don't start picking goblets randomly.

        • There's a very specific order needed to douse the flames, do you know it? Pay close attention to the animals on each goblet.

        • Use the hints from the four notes you found around the building to find the correct order.

        • The Pointed Note from the coffee table gives you your first important clue: "Hornless is the beast that leads the way".

          • This means that whichever goblet is first has a picture of an animal without horns.

          • That eliminates the Rhino and Cow as an option, leaving only the Dog and Pig as possible first goblets.

        • Next, consider the Crumpled Note you discovered in the bedroom: "Swine follows after canine".

          • A swine is a pig and a canine is a dog, so you now know that the pig goblet is used after the dog goblet.

          • Therefore, the Dog Goblet must be the first goblet that goes into the fire.

        • Now take a look at the Old Note from the bookcase: "Bovine comes before swine".

          • Bovine is a cow, so that must mean that the cow goblet is used before the pig goblet.

        • Lastly, study the message in the Smelly Note you found by the toilet: "Horned is the last beast to go, the flames dying in its wake".

          • The horned animals you already confirmed are the Cow and Rhino.

          • You know the cow comes before the pig, so it can't be the last beast.

          • That leaves the Rhino Goblet as the only option for the last goblet to be used on the fire.

        • Put it all together and you know the order; Dog is first, Cow comes before Pig, and Rhino is last!

      • Start Questioning!

        • Question 1: What could you use to put out the fire?

          • The Dog Goblet, then the Cow Goblet, next the Pig Goblet, and lastly the Rhino Goblet.

      • Ta-dah! The fire will go out, revealing the secret passage.

    @Sophia

It was the victim. The evidence is the remote controlled squib (if she wasn't involved, she would have taken it onstage with her to play her part as usual).

Has anyone finished this? I'm right at the end, and I'm sure I know whodunnit, but I'm not sure if I've collected enough evidence.

Is there something else that doesn't have a marker, or is it just the broken ivy?

    Crime Scene Reconstruction

    Instructions

    • After a brief introductory conversation with the Prof regarding the initial facts of the crime, you'll be tasked to examine the crime scene reconstruction, a perfect scale model of the scene of the crime.

    • You have 5 minutes to examine all of the available evidence around the area. After that time, you'll be expected to name who you first suspect may be the guilty party.

    • Tap and drag left or right across the screen to rotate the view of the camera around the scene. Use two fingers to drag in any direction if you want to shift the focal point of the camera.

    • Tap the inside of important areas (indicated by a dotted line circle) to zoom in for a closer look.

      • Any object with a white marker can be examined by tapping the circle over the object. The item and its information will then be added to your list of evidence and the marker will change from white to yellow.

      • Additionally, you can drag the slider at the bottom of the screen to zoom the camera in further. Certain objects will only be visible if the camera is zoomed to the correct level, so make sure to search each area closely!

      • Slide left or right to view the different cards, then tap the card of the person you want to accuse to mark the card with a check.

        • Solution: Dolly Hollerday, Statement 2 - "I was right next to him when he keeled over, but I'm one hundred percent that his wig didn't fall off. Something like that's unmissable, know what I mean?"

      • Question 6: Which statement belies his claim that he saw Dread drink the tea?

        • Solution: Dolly Hollerday, Statement 1 - "It was jsut after he ate one of my macaroons that he DJ took a turn for the worse. To be honest, I was absolutely speechless. Oh, and he never touched his tea."

I love Professor Layton so much, and I Love these games too! It's so much fun to see the artistic style of Layton games transferred onto iOS, and the stories are very well written. As opposed to the Phoenix Wright games which I find can be slow and tedious (especially waiting for the text to scroll out word for word), this is a totally smooth, fast-paced and fun experience!

Also, wow the music is just ingenious! My new #1 favourite music of any game. It really sets the scene, and I do not have to turn it off at points, so I can think as I do with normal repetitive game-music (especially in the original Layton series). This music is just fantastic. In fact, it improves my enjoyment by a lot, even though it's already quite good! Hooray for Layton! Everyone should go out and get it and give it 5 stars, as its current 3 stars in the app store does not do it justice.

    Reply

    Hi Danielle,

About finding "what's at odds with the recording" ...

There's an important clue in the recording around the time that DJ Dread falls to floor. Did you pick up on it?

It's not what can be heard, but what isn't heard when Dread falls that matters.

There's the sound of him slumping over and hitting the ground, but what about the crash of the broken cup? Surely that would have made a loud noise if it fell at the same time as the body!

Examine the Broken Cup on the floor beside the corpse and select it as the proof.

If you need any additional help, please let me know! :)

Stuck on the Case 3 conclusion:

Who masterminded the whole thing and switched the guns, and which piece of evidence reveals the true mastermind behind the case?

    Reply

    bloohoo,

The identity of the real culprit...

Is a real twist! I'm not surprised that you got stuck here. Here's a hint: If Roscoe Strapping is as innocent as he claims, then who would have a motive for framing him?

It was the victim, Ms. Gloria Blaise herself! One important piece of evidence points to only her as the guilty party...

And that item is the Remote Switch. The switch was discarded in the rubbish bin intentionally and it's already been confirmed that the button on the switch was never pressed. Why would Gloria have gone on stage without the device... unless she knew she didn't need it! She knew that her fiance would shoot her with a real gun, because she's one who switched it with the harmless prop gun.

Stuck on case six! What's the evidence to prove Agonni's death is a suicide? I swear I've clicked everything relevant and nothing's happened so I'm completely stuck.

    Reply

Regarding the evidence of the second shot,

It's already been confirmed that the first shot was fired from the real gun during the performance, which also left a bullet hole in the set wall. Also important is the fact the gun, which you found in Clegg's hands, is noted as having 5 shots left in its cylinder.

You know there was a second shot, the one fired blindly in the darkness after the murder was committed, but there's no second bullet hole. You can infer that second shot was fired from...

A second gun! Specifically, the Replica Gun that only fires blanks. Select the fake gun next to the rubbish bin as the evidence.

    Reply

Hi, Jazz. Just to clarify, do you mean the section "Find a clue about Agonni's suicide"?

    If so,

Then pay close attention to Agonni's corpse, something about it should be immediately suspicious...

Although the body is burned, the cause of death was a broken neck. What evidence on the body corroborates this fact?

Zoom in on the body and select the Tail End Of Rope around Agonni's neck. The rope could have been used by Agonni to hang himself.

When I click on the ivy nothing happens...? I tried double clicking but that doesn't work either. Can anyone help me?

    Reply

    mcao.248,

You'll be asked two times to find a secret passage. If this is the first time, it's not possible to locate the ivy, even if you're tapping in the right spot. You'll have to deliberately choose a wrong area to progress the story (simply select any item, it doesn't matter which, and press the button at the lower right). Try that and see if it works. The next time you're sent to the castle, you'll receive a notification that new evidence is available and you'll then be able to examine the ivy.

If this is the second time you're searching for the ivy, then that's a bit trickier. Double check to make sure that you are at the very top floor of the castle. If so, you should be able to click directly under the central tower window to zoom in on the ivy.

    mcao.248 July 2, 2013 2:05 AM

When you click on a random item is it supposed to go to the four detectives and end with Hilda telling Lucy not to let Al get to her? Because after she says that the screen goes black and then it goes back to the deductions. I click on west tower rooftop and then there's no new evidence.

    Reply

    Caitlin,

You're looking for something that proves Hen came into the room after the murder was committed. To find that, you'll need to consider: what item changed between the time of the murder and before Hen came in?

Please click the spoiler below to reveal the second half of this comment:

The item that changed is the ashtray, which now contains a cigarette! You know that the ash tray was the murder weapon. Remember that the blood was wiped off, so Donkey unwittingly put out his cigarette in it several minutes before Hen came into the room. If the murder was committed after that point in time (when Hen was around), the cigarette and its ash would have fallen out of it.

Select the Cigarette Butt as proof of Hen's innocence.

    THIS
is far too good to be on IOS for five bucks for this full game. This game is simply too good- the pacing is great, only the tutorial level is tedious, the story is intriguing, I looove the dialogue banter, the chemistry between the characters is GREAT, solving the crimes is intriguing enough to keep the most intelligent of detectives busy yet simple enough for a simpleton like me to stumble around to the answer, the gameplay is fun and intuitive, and every case ends in an unexpectedly different way!

    AND THE AESTHETICS MAN.
The art is gorgeously animated, the characters (Even the killers) are lovable, and the music just pulls you into the game.

Only con is that the game occasionally freezes, but the problem is easily fixed by charging your device while playing the game.

This is a great game for a ridiculously cheap price- a must have game.

    2. Next, use two fingers to drag the viewpoint to the hallway at the right area of the building. Tap the dotted circle at the end of the hall to examine the back wall.

      • Zoom in the camera completely to get a close-up look at the Clock hanging on the wall.

        • The curious symbols on the clock all match the titles of the books in the lounge.

        • Gran Smith's Diet is the Apple. Cat Compendium is the White Cat. Tea Total is the cup of tea. Identikit Cars is the Yellow Car.

        • That's certainly important to note, but you'll need to find one more clue to find the right order.

    3. Tap the dotted circle over the door at the right side of the hallway to inspect it.

      • The Bathroom Door is locked, but there's no keyhole in the door. Tapping the marker for the door will add the "What unlocks the bathroom door?" deduction to your Deductions Board.

      • Zoom in the camera past the fourth dot on the zoom slider to find the marker for the Note On Door.

        • Read the message on the note very carefully: "WC from three o'clock."

        • You've already found the symbol at 3 o'clock is the White Cat. WC must be referring to that, and not the Water Closet! Now you have all the clues to solve the puzzle.

    4. Go back to the bookcase by tapping the dotted circle over it.

      • Push the four books in the correct order using the information from the clues you found on the clock and in the note.

        • Remember the note said the White Cat from 3 o'clock, which means that's your starting point.

        • From there, if you were to read the symbols on the clock clockwise, the order is White Cat, Tea Cup, Yellow Car, Apple.

        • Push the books in that same order: Cat Compendium, Tea Total, Identikit Cars, and Gran Smith's Diet.

        • Voila! The books will stay pushed in and trigger a mechanism to open the Bathroom Door in the hallway.

So, in the Cases 007-009 Walkthrough, you said there was "More Coming Soon!, Trinn. Are they going to come up with more levels? I reeeeally hope they do and any information from anyone would be nice! ^^

I wish! It was actually a placeholder for File No. 006 which has since been added to the walkthrough. Hopefully Level-5 will come out with a sequel, but judging by the amount of time it took for it to reach the US and EU markets (almost a whole year from the original Japanese release!) we unfortunately won't likely see it for a long while.

Stuck in Case 8! Literally! I have solved the case, but the game keeps crashing on me when Lucy gets to the bookcase at the end.. I have restarted from where I left off several times and started over three times to see if I can keep the game going. Very, very frustrating when I only have one case left!!! Any suggestions?
