Horse Jump

JohnBHorse Jump is a simple logic-driven puzzle game created by RatoLibre1. It utilizes a board with colored and marked squares alongside matching tokens you can click to manipulate. Each piece moves like a knight in chess, that clever little L-shape that works so well in puzzle games. Touch each matching square on the screen to progress to the next level. Do it flawlessly and within the move limit to earn a perfect score!

Horse Jump does a fantastic job building the difficulty up over the course of the game. It teaches new tricks without hand-holding tutorial text, which is a big step closer to game design perfection in our book. Stylish and simple with a flawless interface, loads of harsh puzzles to complete, and a bonus level editor in case you run out of things to do. It's absolutely sublime!

I like that it has the lines on the pieces in addition to the color differences. I'm not color-blind but I appreciate it when designers think of people who are.

This reeks of bad design. What is the point of adding colours, when they have absolutely nothing to do with the puzzle?

They only serve to add confusion, thus I didn't understand at first why a tile didn't disappear when I put a token on it that was just one knight's move away from another tile that I had just removed. But the colours need to be ignored, it's only the direction of the lines that matter.

And for that horrible design choice, this game only deserves and gets one mushroom.

@ThemePark And what if the developer isn't much of an artist? The first top comment on Kongregate is replied with such an answer.

Each color is specifically associated with the direction of the line. Tiles that include more than one type of line mix the two associated colors. For example, a vertical line piece is always red (more like hot pink), and a forward-slash diagonal line piece is always blue. The tile that can accept either piece shows both lines, and is purple (a mix of red and blue). The colors make sense. The mixture is not always perfect. And I can see how they can be distracting, but I actually think it's a great design aspect.

As for level of difficulty, the puzzles are overall too easy.

for some reason couldn't get beyond level one. After finishing that level, no new levels were unlocked.

Sooooo...

I had the same problem as Gregor. Beat the first level, nothing unlocks.

I liked it.

The color design was flawed, yes, but with four "primary" tiles, there's always going to be a color problem (unless one of them is simply greyscale, which would also be a bit, um, ugly). I suppose you could have blue, red, yellow, and "lime" for your "primary" colors, with the obvious purple/orange/green derivatives; the "lime" offshoots could be brown (with red) and teal (with blue) but then what comes from a marriage between lime and yellow?

As for the puzzles themselves, most of them were far too easy, which made it a bit of a grind to get to the few interesting ones. The toughies, though (especially the last one) were really quite enjoyable!

I like these puzzles. For the last one, I ran an exhaustive search and found 7,477,558 different solutions.

If you start with five blue hops and five pink hops, clearing the required squares, then there are 426 different solutions from that point on. If you take any number of pink hops up to twelve, or any number of blue hops up to eight, clearing a square each hop and landing on the required squares, then there is a solution. You can't miss. :-)

Can't get ANY of the levels to work. Probably doesn't matter since the game is gonna be gone at the end of the month anyway.
