JessChild's PlayAh, human drama. The trials and tribulations of star-crossed lovers, the agonizing decisions made on the battlefield, the ...supreme annoyance of having some rotten kid try to steal your favorite toy?

Child's Play, a wonderful piece of interactive fiction created by Stephen Granade, brings us back to a simpler time, one when 'the Mom' took care of our every need and the ills of the world were no worse than a spilled glass of milk. You are an unnamed child, somewhere between baby and toddler (crawling: yes, walking: no), and today is playgroup day! This would normally be all well and good, except for one unfortunate fact: your nemesis, a little red-haired girl named Zoe, will be there. She's smart, she's determined, and she wants your favorite toy. Oh, but there is no way that you are going to let her get her grubby little hands on your treasure, is there?

And so unfolds the very entertaining yet surprisingly complex scenario of baby vs. baby. Granade does an excellent job imbuing an adult sort of awareness into the unique mindset of a young child; the protagonist is entirely self-aware (as well as savvy enough to realize that adults will be of no help whatsoever) but must contend with limited abilities (cannot talk, cannot walk, etc). So, instead of relying upon strength or sophistication, you as baby must watch the world around yourself, observe patterns of behavior and learn how to manipulate the other children and adults into doing your will. Surprisingly Machiavellian!

I love the game's childlike yet witty way with words, which also contains some truly awesome imagery (one favorite: "Zoe is sitting in a fog of grump on the floor"). The other child NPCs are remarkably well-integrated into the gameplay and display individual character and personality without saying a word; the parents are simply funny, and their interactions shine a bit of a light on the absurdity of adult behavior. Still, what stuck out to me most about the game is the steely determination of the protagonist and nemesis to gain control of the toy; no battle over land or riches was more single-mindedly fought. You'll need to muster all your adult intelligence to win this child's war!

Time to enter the fray:

Play Child's Play Rated yellow :o due to (mild) adult conversations going on in the background.

Cheers to Emily for the suggestion! =)

The links above point to JIG's internally developed Flash-based Z-Machine interpreter (thanks asterick!), with the story files hosted here with permission from the game's author. That means you can now play these games in your browser rather than having to download and run the game in a standalone interpreter.

If you would rather download the game, you may do so at the Interactive Fiction Database. If you choose to download the game, you will need an interpreter to read the z-file, just like most IF games: try Gargoyle for Windows, or Zoom or Splatterlight for Macintosh and Unix.

Walkthrough Guide

Partial walkthrough. (goes up to Chapter 2)

Smothered In Darkness:

Mommy is squishing me too hard. It's all stuffy and hot, so I start to cry. Mommy puts me down and makes some sounds. Hm! That'll teach her.

Middle of the Living Room:

Today Mommy wants me to learn to do this "standing" thing again. She took my favorite toy. Mommy is making me pull up on footstool. Then she makes some sounds and then goes away - I sit down. My toy is still on the footstool, but the footstool is all wobbly and wiggly, so I just push the footstool and toy goes Plop! and falls down. Aw! All these pillows are blocking my toy. I go push the pillows, but they're all big and squishy and don't move. I look at the pillows, and I see Alphadog, and I think maybe he can help me move the pillows. I turn on Alphadog and he moves wizzes away. Weeeee! Alphadog move all the pillows at the east. Yay!

Chapter 1:

Zoe. She wants my toy. Mommy put it in this backpack with Care Bears on it, and hide it behind the rocking chair. Parry is rocking, so I can't get my toy. So I go get another toy, and show it to Jemison. He starts looking at my toy. So then I have this idea!

I chew the toy and then go pull up onto Parry. And then Jemison follows, so then I drop my toy on Parry's lap, and then I wiggle so Parry drops me and then gets Jemison! Now the rocking chairs is not rocking, because Parry is holding Jemison. Then I go open the backpack and get my toy, but the onesie get's stuck on the zipper and now Zoe is screaming. Oh no, now Zoe's mommy is comming to see what's wrong. I try to find my toy fast but the onesie is covering it and I can't find it and now Marion has the backpack. I cry but nothing happens. Marion doesn't take my toy out.

I need to get Marion to do something else, so I go take Zoe's toy, and Zoe starts to scream again and Marion comes over and the onesie is still stuck. Marion tries to get Zoe to stop crying, and then gives Parry the backpack. Parry puts my toy in his lap! I pull up and get the toy, then go back down but then Zoe is all loud and screaming again. Oh no, not again! Mommy takes my toy, and carries me to the kitchen. Aw, snack time - but i'm not even hungrrreeey! But I eat anyway, until mommy puts us back.

Chapter 2:

My toy is in the cabinet, and there's no baby gate now. But I still can't get it because Zoe won't let me open it, and even if I could there's a baby latch. I need to keep Zoe occupied, get it that funny piece of paper behind the cabinet, and find something really heavy to push the baby latch down.

Jemison is funny. There's a funny sticky (Velcro) jangly ball, and Jemison follows wherever it sticks. I went and stuck it on Zoe's back, and now Jemison is always following her. Zoe looks annoyed - heehaw... Jemison is distracting her when I go open the cabinet, but I still can't because of the baby latch/lock.

I can't crawl behind the footstool and behind the cabinet, but I saw Cassie pulling up the couch and cruise along it. So I cruised behind the cabinet and took out that paper. I think the paper makes the cabinet not wobbly, because when I took it out it started to wobble. Which gives me a new idea! I think if I can wobble Parry's tumbler onto the baby latch, it will open and I'll get my toy! Oh wait... Parry took the tumbler for a drink... Now how do I get him to put it back on top of the cabinet?

I think if Parry doesn't want to drink from the tumbler, then he will put it back on the cabinet. So I think I should make it all yucky, but Parry won't let me. I need a distraction.

I was making these stairs with the blocks, and Cassie is always climbing on them, them jumping down from the tall one and getting hurt. So once I made the stairs again and she jumped, Parry went to help her. So I went and put the slobbery wet smooth stone in the tumbler, and then slobbered all over it for good measure.

I go back to the cabinet and try to open it again. This time, Zoe is blocked by Jemison, and the cabinet is all wiggly and the tumbler falls on the baby latch. The door opens and I get my toy! But Jemison got all wet though, so they made everyone change into Halloween costumes and now we have to take pictures. Mommy took my toy... again!

I finished the game, but i'm to lazy to finish the walkthrough. heh. The hardest part for me was getting a mental image of what the room looks like.

Cruddy "Map" of the Room.
Note: Contains a few things that may spoil the game later on, such as newly accessible locations and toy locations for each chapter.

While it may not be helpful to look back at this map every few seconds, it will help you get a general view of the room. A good way to find things is simply to say "Get (object/person/toy)", and the game will say something along the lines of, "The squishy ball is at the loveseat at the north to the northeast, and is much to far away for you to reach.", and you will know now to go to the northeast.

I love digging in to some good IF, but I'm struggling a little with the diction of this one. Is the baby a valley girl?

She's all...
And I'm like...

I'm really trying to get into the character, but the text has a weird slant/flavor that keeps taking me out of it.

Reply

I know the onesie! Then Zoe starts to cry and Marion takes the backpack and fixes it, closes it, and puts it back!

Reply

As long as the character slant/flavor is consistent, which it is, then I'm not sure why diction matters?

Reply

Nobody seems to be interested in the toys I'm playing with. I mean, I can't even play with them right - it just says "that's super generic" when I try to play. What's the right verb to get a baby interested?

This game seems to be about using the babies' and adults' natural tendencies to further your goals. Perhaps that holds some clue to progress?

We've already taken advantage of Jemison's jealousy and Parry's fairness. This allows access to the backpack, but the onesie always gets stuck in it. Marion takes the backpack and gets it unstuck, but she puts the toy back in. I'm not sure what to do about this. Also, the playpen seems collapsible/dangerous and may spark something, if one can reach it.

So, perhaps the next step deals with the characters of the characters.

-Zoe's possessive and starts a tantrum when something is taken from or given to her
-Cassie delights in most objects and is very hyperactive
-I can't get a good read on Watson or the female parents yet

...anyone have any ideas?

Reply

Those errors occur when you try commands that are not understood by the game. It doesn't affect gameplay, and the errors appear when playing in standalone interpreters as well.

In other words, when you see them, pretend the game replies "I don't understand that command".

Reply
Bloatedsack July 30, 2008 7:30 PM

I know I'm being nit-picky, but I'm just saying that the style is pulling me out of character at times. The weird grammar or word choice makes me stop and interpret, instead of seeing the world as the character.

Many of the descriptions are straightforward, but some have that "flavor." I'm struggling with reconciling the flavor in regards to the thoughts of the baby.

Would the baby think and observe like that?
Why does it turn that phrase instead of a more flat observation?

I'd slap some examples in here, but I don't have any on the screen right now, and I don't want to post spoilers.

It is sort of like an actor dropping their accent occasionally in a movie.

[/nit-pick]

Otherwise, I'm really enjoying the premise and mechanics (so far)!

Illarion, here's my take on the situation:

One of the things that Zoe's mother pulls out of the backpack is a cup. Since there's a onesie stuck in the backpack, and Jemison wears onesies, my idea is that if you can get the cup, maybe you can open it and give it to Jemison, who will then spill its contents and thus need to have his onesie changed.

I haven't been able to get the cup again yet though.

Reply

I think the cup is empty, Themepark.

Reply

@ ThemePark

I don't think that's the case, it's not that kind of cup. When you look at it the game tells you it's one of those cups you pile up with other cups of different sizes.

What good is that supposed to do? Whenever Marion gives Zoe something from the backpack and I try taking it, I'm just told the usual, she has a grip of steel.

Reply

@ ThemePark

When you give something to Zoe she reacts wildly and throws the thing you were trying to give her away. This makes Marion grab her and pull her away from you. So if you do that while Marion is trying to fix the backpack...

Reply

Stupid rug. And the footstool is too tall. Those block don't reach high enough, and Cassie keeps messing with them and getting hurt. Never learns. So ya, I guess I'm stuck. The playpen needs two people to open it or a simulation of two people (e.g. putting something in the latch). Any tips right now? Please?

Reply
ThemePark July 30, 2008 8:41 PM

I still don't get it.

As soon as Zoe starts to cry, Marion opens the backpack, finds a toy but then closes it again, all at the same time. Even if I give Zoe something immediately afterwards, she just gets pulled away from me, but the backpack is closed again.

Reply

themepark:

get the onesie stuck so marion has to spend a turn doing stuff.

Reply

@Themepark

Even as Marion puts the toy back in, the backpack is not fixed. In addition, Parry offered to fix the bag, and Parry is a little naive. Marion will also hurry to reprimand Zoe whenever she attacks you. She attacks you whenever you give her something or try to take something from her. So, what you want to do it give something or take something from Zoe, cause a reaction which will make Marion give to bag to Parry. Then pull up Parry and try to get the toy. Your mom notices this, and 'the jig is up'. End of that scene.

ThemePark July 30, 2008 9:01 PM

There seems to be some information here that I have not yet seen.

I don't recall Parry having said anything about fixing the bag, and the bag isn't broken in any way. It just gets opened, a toy is taken out by Marion, and then she closes it again. Nothing breaks.

I tried putting the book inside, which did me no good.

One more thing. After you get the plastic slippery blocks, the blocks might not reach the stool, but they do reach the ovals on the playpen. The issue is that you need to push both ovals at the same time.

I didn't know all of you meant that the onesie would be broken, I thought you were talking about the backpack. Plus I got the idea somehow that the onesie was very big, much too big for a baby to move, even more so since I also got the idea that it was filling up the entire backpack.

Still one problem though. Marion always refuses to let Parry fix the backpack, she does that herself instead.

Oh, and in case you haven't noticed,

the baby gate at the north end of the loveseat is gone, unlocking a new area. You can get to the toy, but Zoe keeps you from opening the cabinet...

Sticking the balls to her, though, will keep her out of the way, as Jemison blocks her attempt to keep you from the toy.

I wouldn't have gotten through without first drawing a map of where to go and what's in it, and the ever-so-helpful walkthroughs here!

Thank you!

@blah

Huh? The pull up thing?

Do what mom tells you

pull up footstool. Make sure you aren't holding anything though - and if you are, put it in your mouth so your hand are free. Then when she leaves, you can stop now, so

[sit] down and find some other way to get your toy, since your hands can't reach it without falling down:

push [the] footstool to make your toy fall off, but the pillows are blocking your path. So

[e]x[amine] [the] pillows, and you will find your alphabet knowing bulldozing fast mechanical canine friend, Alphadog.

Turn on Alphadog, who will leave a gap in the wall of pillows to the

east, which you will be able to exit, now enabling you to

get the toy that fell, thus beginning Chapter 1: Playtime.

And geez, this is one freakishly cunning baby lol

For the blocks. What command do you use to

build the block stairs next to the gate.

As clever as this game is, I couldn't help but notice a few guess-the-verb problems. The most obvious was

Climb Parry. I tried climb onto Parry, pull up on Parry, pull up onto Parry's legs... but the only command that works is climb Parry

Once I noticed that the adults were having a conversation, I tried to 'listen,' but that just ended up giving me an error.

I also found that the massive clumps of text you got from parents talking and kids playing a distraction.

Just beat it!! the source code helped a ton!!

I had this strange text:

Cassie yanks the ball out of her mouth.

Cassie pops the ball out of her mouth.

>take ball
Cassie has a grip like steel.

Cassie takes the ball and sort of plays with it.

Notice how Cassie does the same thing twice, without any notion of undoing it.
She also "takes" the ball, despite she already has it.

I've just got out of the ring of pillows and I'd say that this is a fantastic game.

Dale, you're thinking with the wrong scale in mind. I used

pull feet

Chapter three Zoe keeps climbing the blocks and waves an object at your toy, climbing down, getting another toy, and climbing the blocks again.

Then, eventually, it says this:

Zoe pokes the much-loved kangaroo towards your favourite toy. She is doing the baby equivalent of randomly using everything in your inventory on an object.

I thought that was quite funny.

I saved a game on here earlier, and it seemed to take, but now when I type in "load" it doesn't recognize the command. What command do I use? Or do I need to locate the file it put on my computer..?

delzoup - try "restore"

Thank you very much :D

Is there a specific place where you have to build the blocks?

Okkaaay. So I looked at the walkthrough but im still totally stuck.

it said to 'cruise behind the cabinet and get the piece of paper'...errrm...for one i cant go behind the cabinet. and there was no mention of paper either. So far I found the cabinet but can't pull up on it although i can see a tumbler? And I have found each of the plastic blocks but I cant move them so how can I make stairs??
Can anyone help me??

Hmm... *searches memory*

@Beebz

Well, go behind the footstool, which is also behind the cabinet. So "pull up couch" when you are at the Couch at West area. Then "Cruise west", and you'll wiggle between the couch and footstool and loveseat, or whatever. Also, I think if you examine the footstool, you'll see the peice of paper, bringing you to location number 12 - the name which i forgot.

@anelson + @Beebz
It's not one command

Simply find all the blocks and push them into the same "room". Since the "rooms" are really just small parts of the living room, just pushing them together in the same area and they just form stairs all by themselves.

Hm, what a surprise, my part walkthrough was actually put at the top... thing. At first I thought someone had gone and made a complete one, but YAY! It's at the top! That always gives me a happy feeling. (=

Now, i'm off to scourge the web for more IF stuff.
Buh-bye for now.

I'm running into a problem

everytime I get Cassie to fall off of the blocks I can't find the tumbler before Parry sits back down

Reply

I managed to find a bug

if you're sitting by the rocking chair and perry is rocking in it, and you're holding the rock and you 'throw up on perry'
it prints the following error:

A mistake in the source ('souce' line 653) meant that argument 0 had the wrong type.

A mistake in the source ('souce' line 654) meant that argument 0 had the wrong type.

Great game. Gave me a little trouble, so I had to resort to the walkthrough a few times. I did notice that there were a few point discrepancies:

Not sure if it's a bug, but I was able to beat the game without getting the final 10 points because I had the stick in my hands still. When I did an UNDO to go back, I dropped it, got the toy, and finished the game with a total of 105/100 points. What I did was drop the ball, in the ring of pillows at the beginning, on top of the footstool and knock it out as well, thus knocking out my "favorite toy" twice.

Confused! I got perry to put the tumbler on the cabinet and removed the paper but when I go to open the cabinet it says "It goes rock rock now that there is no paper under it and the heavy tumbler tilts as though it might fall" But no matter how many times I do it the tumbler never falls....

What did I do wrong?

I am playing this again (haven't finished yet) and it's fun but it's so annoying when the narrator does: "...and she's all..." I'm like omg if there is another she's all, it's all or whatever Im gonna go crazy! lol But sure enough there is lmao.

I am having trouble.

On Chapt. 1, I get Jemison's attention with the rock, but then Parry won't pick him up after I drop down off him! Help!

Reply

I'm so stuck :(

I have the book and Jemison following me around, but when I try to pull up on (climb, alert etc.) Parry I get this message: Even though you are chewing on the book it is still big enough that you have to keep it in your hands and so you can't pull up when you have it, if only the plush book were smaller you would have your hands free.

I think I can't drop the book yet, right?? I have to wait till I'm on Parry's lap so Jemison wants to get up there?
