UFootballFlash Game Design CompetitionThe next entry to the 4th Casual Gameplay Design Competition is from Luís Lampreia of Portugal. Please welcome Luís with your kind feedback and constructive criticism in the comments.

UFootball is a single-player game of soccer ("football" to most everyone else) that implements the "ball physics" theme well within the ball-based gameplay.

Fun little game, but the computer opponent isn't very skilled. I won the match mostly on the back of his own-goals.

I'm sure the two characters are equally solid, but I felt like I was passing right through the ball an awful lot while the computer wasn't. I didn't have the speed button down or anything. I just went right through the ball a whole bunch. I felt like I was fighting the controls more than the opposing player.

I cant play the game, it loads and everything, but when it shows the playing field, nothing is clickable, not keys work. Any help/suggestions?

Yes, the computer opponent seems more interested in possessing the ball than really doing anything with it.

I agree with the "running through the ball" comment, I noticed that it was far more difficult for me to keep possession than for him.

But his own goals had the match over quite soon!

A menu would be nice, with a little explanation of how many goals you need to win etc.

the drop down navigation menu for the competition kept getting in the way.

I would desperately love to see a two player internet version of this game. It would be a classic! I love this game, and my ball handling skills are improving exponentially as I play, but the opponent, alas, is not improving along with me. It's pretty much a slaughterfest at this point. Needs better AI or a human opponent.

I won effortlessly. Heck, I once sat in a corner and watched the computer fail at everything for a full minute. And I pass through the ball.

Beautiful! I'm sure there's a lot more to tinker with and improve but this is one of the nicest association ("ssoca" -> soccer) football games I've seen.

I had the same problem as Goda - but a page refresh fixed all.
And I agree, the AI is, well, not very I.
But it's a nice idea, and a good little diversion.

One good idea to improve the gameplay would have been to implement bonuses randomly appearing on the playfield for a limited amount of time (you have to choose: either you go for a useful bonus and possibily let you opponent score, either you ensure the control of the ball...).

Suggestion of bonuses (one left-click for activation):
- 1-2s speed boost
- magnet (the ball remains at the feet of your UFO/bot
- smash (you opponent is dizzy for 1-2s)
- etc.

I love the concept. Easy to understand, fast and smooth. Very much a quick fix kind of game. But it grows with time as you master the controls. Being able to play against a human would be really nice.
Great game.

I find this game to be quite fun! I especially like how the player bot sprints when you press the mouse key, it's very useful. Playing in full screen (the button at the bottom-right side) is much better than in the default small window.

That game has the potential, for sure.

However, there are some things that might be improved...

First of all, the CPU-player's AI... I was up 3:0 and had to tak a phone call. I didn't bother to find out if I can pause the game, just took the call and left the game alone for the time being. It lasted for something like 2 minutes, then i went back to the game - it was still 3:0. The opponent couldnt score a single goal in 2 minutes without me even playing. With an opponent this dumb victory doesn't really feel a victory...

Plus: most of the time the game consist of the two players close together wrestling over the ball. When I'm in possession, I can kick the ball, when I'm not in possession, I cant. The problem is that there's no way to know who's in control in such situoations. All I see is the two players together and the ball in between. It might be a god addition to somehow let the player know if they have tha ball or the opponent (like coloring the ball or something like that)

PS: that 3:0 game was going on all the time i was typing this message in I've just checked it, and I won 7:4. Which means the robo-player scored 4 own goals. Without an active opponent.

The computer defeated itself 7:0 on own goals before I learned the controls.

I'm surprised that CPUHooligans haven't dragged this UFObot into an unused partition and reformatted it.
