Brown Dyed Hotel

JayBrown Dyed HotelBrown Dyed Hotel is by a group of talented Swedish students from Campus Karlshamn of Blekinge Institute of Technology who have been busy building a few games lately. The first one that caught my eye is a collection of puzzles that is one part discovery, similar to no circles, and one part riddle game, as with not pron, and it will surely give your gray matter a workout.

Work your way through each level discovering the secrets that allow you to complete each task. If you get stuck, don't be afraid to reload the browser page to reset the current puzzle, if necessary. Since each puzzle is slightly different than the one before it, the experience feels fresh and unique, if a bit short. There are only about 12 levels from what I could see. Some notes on the site hint at more, though.

The entire site is full of mystery and secrets, so when you're done with the puzzle make sure you check out the other goings on at Brown Dyed Hotel. And for the more adventurous, look for their beautiful 3D physics game, Ether, which is actually a Half-Life 2 mod with a gorgeous stylized environment.

Cheers to Aini for the link! =)

Update: The game is no longer available to play on the internet. Previously tagged as: browser, discovery, flash, free, game, linux, mac, puzzle, rating-g, riddle, simpleidea, windows

...Ah! I think this is what they mean by "power of posting".

When I omitted the ".html", it worked.

But now I'm stuck on the one right after it.

I think the keyword is "ether". When I tried ".../ether/" I was told ".html". When I tried ".../ether.html" I was told "You're ahead of your time" and nothing else. What am I supposed to be doing?

Brown Dyed Hotel Hint Through
[walkthrough to follow]
This is my first time doing a hint-through, so if it's too obvious/not obvious enough, let me know.
(notice: the levels count down, hence the first page is level 11)

Prelude:

Just click! Sorry, no way to hint this one!

11.

Hm, the url is sol.html... and those rotating circles are familiar... which one are we on..?

10.

The url says cirkles, but there's a gap. Gaps let things through.

9.

Bigger is heavier, and can push things down farther, but too heavy may push things down too far.

8.

A zero is kinda like an absence.

7.

If you strain to see what's in front of you, you might miss what's on the edges, because of the...

6.

Sometimes you just have to stab in the dark, if your weapon is something that works.

5.

Look at the walls, follow instructions, combine, reverse, follow instructions again.

4.

If something doesn't sound right, pull it out.

Touch what changes.

3.

An equation where the answer's not in Flash.

Url change.

2.

Drag and see what moves and what's revealed.

Url change.

1.

Two numbers on the wall, but there's no 26th hour.

Maybe if they're both minutes...

Feedback appreciated. :3

Walkthrough:

What to do and why! (This being a mystical mystery, I may have a wrong explanation, but this is what makes sense to me.)
Prelude:

beforethebeginning.html
Just click any part of the white thing.

11.

sol.html
It's a solar system from a strange angle. The outline planet is earth. Click!

10.

cirkles.html
You want the circle in the middle to fill up from the four directions. Moving the cursor causes the outer rings to spin, and clicking the circle causes a black dot to come from first north, then east, south, west. Figure out where to place the cursor to have both rings lined up with their gap facing the direction the next dot will come from. Click on the inner circle and quickly move the cursor back to where you just had it and hold it there. The black dot will come in and enter the circle. Repeat until all four are inside.

9.

thefix.html
Your goal is to "fix" the dots and squares so that everything is between the lines. Do this by hovering the cursor over a circle and then clicking on it when it gets big enough to weigh down the square. A higher square needs a bigger circle. If you mess up just refresh.

8.

5dots.html
You can see "10110" in the top left corner. The black circles are the 1s. So run your mouse over the black circles so that there's circle, gap, circle, circle, gap. /vision will appear below: click on it. (If you attempt vision.html, btw, you will get the easter egg "don't try to outdo yourself.) ^_^

7.

unvision.html
What's all that blurry stuff? A distraction, that's what. The lower right corner has four dots. Click on them until they spell BLUR. You get /machine. NOW you want to change the url to browndyedhotel.com/machine

6.

machine
If you click on "work" you get the message "ether might actually work". Click wildly in the black space to the right of the video until you find a text box (it's towards the top left). Quickly type ether and hit enter! May take a few tries because it resets whenever the video resets.

5.

corridor.html
Click on the left wall. Scroll left until you see "press b". Press the b key. All the words will disappear except "HEBROOD." Click. Go to the right wal. Scroll right until you see "push here", click on it. All words disappear except "ONAIPDNI". "ONAIPDNIHEBROOD" is "DOOR BEHIND PIANO" backwards. Click on the door at the end of the hall. Click on the door above the piano (not the ladder, but to the left of that).

4.

piano.html
If you click on the keys, the third from the left sounds broken. Pull on it. Four other keys will turn gray (three whites and a black). Click on the four gray keys.

3.

bigblacklake.html
Black equals white and a small circle equals a large circle. Change the url to smallwhitelake.html (Clicking and holding shows us a big black lake, but it's not necessary to the puzzle).

2.

smallwhitelake.html
The zooming triangle is a distraction. The lower-right triangular wedge can be dragged to the upper left to reveal the words clock.html

1.

clock.html
First, run your cursor repeatedly on and off the upper black strip until it disappears, revealing a clock. Now if you peer closely at the wall, you will see the numbers 8 and 26. (The 8 is in the upper left corner, the 26 is to the upper left of the upper left corner of the couch.) But 8:26 won't work. You have to pretend like both hands are minute hands and set them to 8 and 26. Then click on the doors that open.

0.

thebeginning.html
Done! Three strange videos. You can click on "the Hotel" to go back to the main page, or click on the 0 to go to...

12.

totheend.html
Another mystery..?

Reply
KingofTown June 30, 2008 11:56 AM

I've gone on past the 'last level'

I watch the 3 videos at the hotel...then clicked the 0

The first and last white dot seem to take you to a dead end. Click the middle dot

That looks familar. It was the title of puzzle 7 when you tried to type ether into the address bar. Anyway, type ^o^ in the bar

Stuck here...

Reply

I'm not sure but...

I think there might be a puzzle at level 0 as well... Before the image of each video loads you see a string of numbers behind each screen. These are (from right to left) 12-23-43-03, 12-23-23-03, 12-23-23-03. Since the page is called 'timer' and the videos are all shot at the same location (from different angles) roughly the same time, we can perhaps assume that these are timecodes, and that the middle and right video are in sync while the left one is ahead/behind? From the code one would assume ahead, but given that in the middle video the barrel goes from standing to fallen over, it is more likely to be behind... Maybe we're supposed to try to get them to stop at the same instant?
Or maybe I'm reading too much into this!

KingofTown:
After admiring the Ikea lamp, I typed what you said and...

am also stuck. The only thing I've figured out is that by holding down the mouse button and 'scratching' it across various parts of the wood background, I make stripes of wood flash quickly across the screen.
Also am not sure first and last dots are dead ends. The first (when assembled) is a drawing that you can find in the bar part of the hotel.

Reply

On the machine level there is a text box but I can't type in it. Also there isn't a video, just some splotches of color. Any suggestions?

Reply

More on 0:

Further investigation has revealed that video 3 (far right) is longer than both videos 1 and two. Video 2 and 3, based on the sound of the helicopter, do sync up from the beginning. Then there is a gap while only video 3 plays, then video one syncs up with video 3 towards the end - unless my ears are fooling me. So we're likely seeing a different barrel in 1 and 2.

I really hope someone brighter than I figures this out, or I'll be scratching my head over it all night!

Reply

King of Town:

if you look on the black board near the top there will be a new URL. Type it in, ILOVELAMP.html

All caps makes a difference.

Then theres another page.

If you watch carfully at the scribble page it says:

"We are working on something bigger"

Reply

Found something:

On totheend.html, there's some text on the third white circle. By right clicking and going to Zoom In a couple of times, you can read this:
"..as it moves through the sky it
consumes plants that pass. They
also descend to the highest of
tree tops and groom them by
eating off their branches. There
has been incidents of creatures
going below the actual tree
crowns for short moments of
time. This behavior is in no
way necessary for the feeding
process as the higher leaves
contain just as..."

Anyone who can make sense of this?

Reply

On the lamp page:

Look at the black board in the background near the top center of the screen.

There's an address: ILOVELAMP.html
It's hard to see and must be in all caps to work.

Then on the next page:

Look at the squiggly line page closely:
We're working on something bigger.

BUT wait, I've found an even harder puzzle.

If you look at the doodle page these are wingdings fonts. I've tried looking at the unicode values and the character codes in word. Maybe someone can figure it out from there.

If you look there's a page that has W_ or W- hard to tell which. But that may be the key to unlocking the Wingdings puzzle.

Reply

CyKO:

Ok, I translated the wingdings as best I could and got this:
6 SiO2 + 6 H2O + gravity pnw -> 6 SiO + 12H + 6 O2
All the 2's are subscript, and the y was missing in gravity. Following that arrow on the paper was "pnw", and I got no clue what that means.
So we got a chemical equation on our hands. Now what?

+There are some very creative puzzles.

-A few puzzles were just annoying. Especially the clock level, I cnanot see the numbers anywhere.

-URL puzzle results, this is already so old and so unimaginative, please spare me of it. Make a text box and let me enter the result there, don't pester me with URLs, that stopped being creative after the 100oo.. clone of not pr0n.

I wonder if they didnt think it through quite right?

Could it be Gravity Pwn? as in I pwned gravity by being lighter than air?

Any chem majors wanna jump in and let us know what gas this equasion makes?

Scarrow June 30, 2008 3:50 PM

CyKO:

The result I came up with (I need to check it again too) is "6 SiO + 6 HO + gravitons -> 6 SiO + 12 H + 6 O". Now, I fail to see what gravitons would have to do with anything or where the other six hydrogens are, but...

Reply

@CyKO;

It creates Silicon Monoxide, the reactants are Silica (commonly known as glass or sand) and water

Oddly enough, I can't find any information on this exact reaction

Also, they left the Hydrogen unbound. In order for the equation to be in standard form, the hydrogen should be bound to itself making it 6H(2) not 12H

Whoops, skipped the subscripted 2's on my end.

Gravitons?

Looking at the formula that you guys have so elegantly figured out we get:

6 SiO2 + 6 H2O = 6 SiO + 12H + 6 O2

FYI, I know http://www.gregthatcher.com/Chemistry/BalanceChemicalEquations.aspx?StartsWith=Z

This equasion is not balanced. So + Gravitons needs to balance the equasion.

If you put in the equasion:
6 SiO2 + 6 H2O - O = 6 SiO + 12H + 6 O2

The equasion becomes balanced. How would you add gravitons and still have the equivelent of removing 1 oxygen?

Either way this is by far the hardest leg of the puzzle... so far???

Also we still need to figure out what W_ stands for and how it fits into the puzzle, if it does.

Also gravitons are theoretical... how do you add something that isn't physically confirmed?

AND THEN WE STILL NEED TO FIGURE OUT THE HTML!!!!

I have a love-hate relationship with these kind of puzzles. On one hand, I love thinking outside the box and totally esoteric ways of solving puzzles. On the other I absolutely hate obscure and frustrating puzzles which you cannot solve even when looking at painfully direct hints.

The clock level is a perfect example of such a self-indulgent, illogical and frustrating puzzle. I simply cannot fathom how I could have found the solution by myself, and what's ridicilous I cannot solve it WITH THE EXACT SOLUTION I HAVE IN FRONT OF ME. Something's horribly wrong in this picture.

Reply

@CyKo

actually that equation is balanced as it is:
you have 6Si 18O2 and 12H on both sides of the equation, you don't need to subtract an oxygen

Does anyone have any idea why the video on my "machine" level isn't working, or how to fix it? Maybe it's because I'm using Mozilla Firefox.

_ (underscore) = wingding sign for Taurus

Chemically, Carnelian is composed of Silicon Dioxide, SiO2
Carnelian is associated with the Zodiac sign of Virgo, but has also been associated with Taurus

lower case w = wingding diamond
upper case W = wingding celtic cross

just messing around so this probably means nothing.

my thoughts on level 0

The films and text HOTEL are a hint perhaps to the 3 clues ahead, other than that Ive no idea about them, I cant hear any sound either, anyway then click the O and we find next screen called 'segment'(is this a clue you need all 3 parts to solve the puzzle) with the text "number12?". Anyway 3 circles 1. clicking leads to room'gosfish' jigsaw of sorts 2. clicking leads to room 'blackprint'- has ILOVELAMP.html clue plus bright symbol ^o^ 3. if we zoom in on this circle we get text describing some type of bird I think and when clicked on leads to 'lens' room, which has many squares lined up in ascending size.
From these 3 clues Ive followed on to 2 more rooms. 1. ILOVELAMP.html page (rightclick and ending loop forward/rewind works on IE also) with the wingdings formula stuff as described above and also a message saying "we are working on something bigger".
2.A page found by just adding ^o^ to end of web address, no html text and small o not 0- leads to a room called lobby with a black square that goes blue every so often.

Anyway just what Ive observed I've really no clue what the game makers want us to do, wether or not these rooms are all interconnected or whats going on really, I await one of the brainy folk here to work it all out for us :P .

It was enjoyable, but my one irritation with certain riddle games is a lack of a definitive ending. To me, the cryptic ending(s) feel like a big red herring. Did I finish? Did I not? I don't know if I'm willing to put in the time to find out. Thus, a good puzzling experience led up to an unsatisfying one.

I was having a good time solving puzzles until

I stumbled down a blind alley that I thought might still be the main run after ether. Then I went and read the spoiler, said "Of course I wasn't going to get the BLACK text box against the BLACK background with nothing else to suggest it was there except the text icon in the mouse if I accidentally hovered over the right hotspot. The neat thing about real html puzzles is that you can read the source code, or select all, or something, and that will show you where to look for the invisible thingie. Not so with flash. Oh and the trick where you have to move fast because the flash movie resets just seems tacky to me. And then I was at the next level, where I had no hope without the walk-through because there don't seem to be different hot-spots, and I just gave up. It's all gibberish, I could read the walk-through if I wanted, but a cute little puzzle game loses its charm when you have to do it by the manual. Sorry, </rant>

Not entirely sure but...

On ILOVELAMP.html, I get 6 SiO2 + 6 H2O + gravity pnw -> 6 SiO + 12H + 6 O2 as well. Sand + Water = Mud and, as Darren pointed out, pnw is mud upside down. Any link there?

And...

In the lobby, the blue box which we can highlight appears to be a Windows Media Player film which should open, but a right click and "Error Details" says that it either timed out or has an incorrect filename. I guess it was supposed to be a film of the lobby...

What it could be is an attempt at inserting the tech demo video that you can see at the elevator into the puzzle. An attempt that apparently fell through.

I would be soo disappointed with the developer if they went through the trouble of translating some chemistry equasion into wingdings and then hand drawing it onto a notebook, not to mention the W_

They do all that and have nothing after that to find. You can tell the developers are smart, very smart, but to make that teaser page the end... I have trouble believing that.

I'm rather annoyed right now.

I'm on the chemistry equation, and dead stuck.

Is that square dark bordered (P) or light bordered (O)?
Is that small diamond thin(S) or thick(W)?

Because I really don't know if it's

MUD upside down, or GRAVITONS. Gravitons simply doesn't make sense, while MUD leaves the "Gravit..." without a Y (or other ending)

Love this site! Visit it daily. Jay, ever since you updated your site I have links to jayisgames archives, new games, complete list of games hovering over both the text descriptions of the daily featured games, and user comments. I cannot find any way to close these, and when I click on where I think there may be an X to close, it opens up the link. Any suggestion on how to move these to the left side of the page where they should be? Right now, "The Nighshift Code" and "New Game Downloads from Big Fish" cover spoilers for "cirkles 3".

[Edit: I believe you need to do a hard reload of the site. If using IE, press [ctrl][F5] while on a JIG page. If using a different browser, clear your browser cache and reload. The problem is most likely due to your browser still using files from before the site update. -Jay]

To all you people that understand this out there, what do you make of this? I found it when I was googling:

6H2O + 6SiO2 = Si6H12O6 + 6O2

is practicably the SAME (besides being written slightly different and not having the word GRAVITONS in it) as what was written in WingDing:

6 SiO2 + 6H2O + gravitons -> 6 SiO + 12H + 6 O2

Found the first thing at: http://www.extrasolar.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1335

They're saying something about silicon based lifeforms and whatnot.

Might be totally irreverent, but it's too similar to just be a coincidence... it must be a clue...?

When you drag a piece over another piece it sometimes goes over, and sometimes under. I examined it further and noticed that when the picture is complete, the order of lowest to highest pieces is left to right, then up to down. Coincidince? Maybe. But if someone finds an adress relating to this please post.

Yes, we know that part. But we're stuck at the chemical equation. Maybe that's the end - maybe they really are just, "working on something bigger", and there really is no answer? Maybe. Sigh.

I looked up "I love lamp" and got a definition from the Urban Dictionary
"Something that is said back to a person who just stated a non sequitar" and "A phrase used when someone has said something particularly unrelated to your own life or personal experience."

So... that means it's completely unrelated and random...?

That is just great.
Pshh.. I give up.

I give up.

Yip. Been trying all this time. Why I've no idea...

In the source code for /theend.html, it says:

Does that mean anything?

You know, the page before the wingdings code has a corner cut out. Maybe it is used to frame something?

Ah, using what xadoc said...

"Just wanted to let anyone who is playing with 'I Love Lamp' and going google-eyed from the flick-book effect...

It's not really a spoiler, but tagging all the same - didn't know my browser (Firefox) did this, found it by luck and thought it would be helpful for others:
Spoiler

Right-click, turn off 'play' and 'loop'. You can then go 'backwards' and 'forwards' through the slides to look at them one by one."

If you do that, then press 'rewind' then 'forward' , there is a corner of the page that is ripped out, maybe it is used to frame something...?
PS: my MS Word has some glitch and cannot use wingdings 1,2 and 3.

Pretty much it.

when i entered machine after unvision, and I get a white screen with black words "It doesn't say that"

It freaked me out! anyone know why? Or gotten that before?

Has anyone figured out what the significance of the puzzle drawing (left white circle on 12) is?

Also, I noticed that in the rightmost video on 0 (zero) it appears as though something is floating in the air - piece of scrap metal or something. Almost as though the gravity gun from Half-Life 2 is being utilized. Could there be a link between the gravity in the chemistry equation and this?

My bet is that this is some weird teaser for HL2: Episode 3.

If you take the second page on the ILOVELAMP stage it makes the sentence (from the ripped piece of paper): 6SiO +1

7Sio? I'm useless at science so I have no idea if that means anything at all.

Also the W_ before on the first page?

W_ 6SiO +1 mean anything?

And Ilovelamp just refers to will ferals comedy 'the anchor man' where he declares love for lamp.

The "totheend" page after the final level, it says "segment" in my browser (top of the sheet), maybe the answer is something you can find if

you combine the findings behind the three dots. On the puzzle page the signature looks like "F6". Anybody who knows what F6 does ?

what if the equation should be without the torn part making it + 6H2O + gravitons -> 6 SiO2H + 6 O2

This is the first comment since January, so this is probably a lost cause, but here goes, I'm desperate to figure this out:

Rather than obsess over ILOVELAMP, which clearly isn't going anywhere, it also says ETHER on the board. Type /ether, and you get to a page called ^o^. Go to /^o^, and you get a website with a video on it, which isn't playing for me. Perhaps something knew to think about...?

Also, if anyone has anything more, please POST IT!
