The engine that comic's using must be new - I can't remember when I've seen apples always land right side up from a tree before.

Well, in real life, the whole thing is a myth. Newton figured out some stuff about gravity, and thinking about the idea of an apple falling out of a tree was a good example for discussion that he used.

People didn't used to think about gravity beyond it being the unexplained thing that kept them on the floor. He thought about how the apple, on the tree, is motionless, and then somehow it is set in motion towards the ground. If something exists in the upper branches of a tree that can move the apple downwards, how high up does it go? All the way up into the sky?
