A Matter of Caos: Episode 3

DoraWhat should have been a simple missing persons case has gotten pretty darn twisted in Expera Games' supernatural noir point-and-click adventure series. In the first episode, the purple, tentacled detective Mr Gilbert was hired by a suspicious woman to find a missing girl she claimed was a childhood friend, but he quickly learned the young woman, Daphne, might have stumbled into something big beyond the mobsters who ran the club she worked at before she went missing. In the second episode, the hunt lead to a secret cult's lair, and Mr Gilbert tangoed with a dangerous assassin while learning Daphne's disappearance may mean bigger things for the city than he thought. Now, in A Matter of Caos: Episode 3, Mr Gilbert is in disguise in the belly of the beast, so to speak, but is Daphne still alive? And even if she is, will he make it out alive? To play, just click on the icons onscreen that represent people or objects to interact with, and remember to try combining items in your inventory at the bottom of the screen if you get stuck, while your notepad keeps track of the plot. As usual, while there are a lot of puzzles to solve, a lot of the game involves reading the story, so kick back, relax, and try not to get murdered. And don't forget... if you like the game, please support the developer by buying the "complete edition", which contains some extra content, and goes toward funding bigger adventures with Mr. Gilbert!

Tongue firmly planted in cheek (... does Mr Gilbert have a tongue? A mouth? A beak??), the A Matter of Caos series has manages to serve up a surprisingly compelling mystery that twines its more magical elements into classic noir tropes in intriguing ways. Players who don't enjoy text-heavy games may wish there was more exploration, but the focus on the plot continues to serve the series well despite the occasionally stiff dialogue. By now, things have gotten more than a little convoluted, as Mr Gilbert deals with crosses and double-crosses, revelations and new characters, but while the flashing exclamation point may get annoying, the notebook does a great job at keeping you up to date on every new element. The puzzles you'll encounter can, sadly, be likewise overcomplicated, relying a little too much on going back and forth, exhausting dialogue options while triggering new ones, and Mr Gilbert doesn't always nudge you as well as he might for the more finicky item uses. Still, A Matter of Caos: Episode 3 is an appealingly macabre twist on familiar mystery stories, and ups the stakes of the series considerably with a number of dangerous events. Mr Gilbert's story doesn't end here, but if you can't guide him through it, he may not make it to see the next and final chapter...

I too had a bit of a problem. For some reason I just had to persist. I would click on the lego block in Foxfire that is in the URL address line to make sure I was allowing Adobe Flash and on the other icon to make sure cookies had permission to load. Also, I had to stay on the Tab to insure I clicked Allow when Firefox wanted to redirect to another page. When it would fail, Unity had a manual install button that I would try. Dont know what I did right but I had loading problems on all three episodes and went through the laborious ritual above and it would work. Took about three tries each time.

If it helps, you may need to leave the browser for a while with the error message. I had the same one (Firefox 41.0.2, which I've just discovered isn't the most up to date one :-) ) - I updated Unity and still got the same error. So I scrolled down to the comments, had a read through, was just about to give up, when I realised that the game had loaded! It may just be a glitch given how long the game takes to load?

"npippi" would probably be NPAPI, which is the browser plugin interface that the Unity player uses. Chrome recently removed support for NPAPI plugins, so you'd have to use some other browser for the Unity player to work.
