Synapsis
Synapsis is an exquisitely detailed, 3D modeled and animated, point-and-click adventure game that was just dropped into our suggestion box by one of its authors, Rob, and he had this to say about it: "It's really hard to explain it, I made the game and I'm not entirely sure what its about. It's the voyage into the mind of David Carter, possibly dead, possibly mad, or maybe just in an alternate reality."

yea it is certainly strange.
a little warning, there seems to be a little bit of pixel hunting involved.
I'm currently stuck with
a wrench, what might be a spark plug, a gas can, a page from the bible, some electronic device, and a ring with dark glass or something in it. Anyways, I have a feeling I need to back up and go to the beginning as the clues are pretty subtle.
I am playing without sound today. I am stuck too but I have no idea if I am missing any audio clues. I seem to be similarly far along.
Items:
cell phone
bible page
dark lens?
cross
Areas/Progress:
Robot Room:
Got the robot walking but haven't opened the door behind him.
Psych Ward:
Got the razor blade, the screwdriver, and the cross. Opened the wall.
Freaky Brain Tunnel:
Solved puzzle, got brain.
Transportation:
Got cell phone from train
Portal:
Opened panel, inserted brain from Psych Ward Brain Tunnel.
Spirit:
Clicked on everything with cross and bible verse. Nothing.
Main:
I keep seeing a guy with a TV for a head but can't figure out how to interact with him.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Alright, here's a walkthrough for a few rooms to help people along. I haven't finished yet, though, so there might be a few things missing... :-P
Motion (room on the far left)
-
Pick up the gas can, the spark plug, the wrench, and the gear. Use the wrench on the small door on the right side of the red generator.
-
Click the spark plug and put it in the circutry there, then pour the gas into the small funnel at the top.
-
Place the gear on the far left side of the conveyor belt, then click the green button to turn the generator on. The roboto eventually drops a round item (an eye, I suppose), and a voice says "You have an eye for detail, are you blind to what has happened?". Hmm...
Contained (second from the left)
-
Pick up the page on the right, then set the clock to 9:15 and grab the razor blade that falls down.
-
Use the blade to loosen the tile below and to the left of the block to get a screwdriver.
-
Use that to tune the radio. After the voice speaks, the radio opens to reveal a small cross.
-
Now, see the empty wall area to the left of the clock? Click around on it to make lines appear and open a small sub-room.
-
This room, called Connection, presents a small puzzle where you are trying to line the lasers to form a connection between the head in the center and the blue pad on the right. It's not too tough, so start clicking around.
I'm stuck right where denied is stuck. And yeah, how did people get a
beating heart?!
The ring thing:
hold it up to the light in the robot room and it will turn red/orange. Then you can put it in the hole in the robot's face and a little electric spark will come out of it and open the door for you.
The only thing I've found in this room is a
candle, which I took to the spiritual room and placed in the empty candle holder. The rest of the candles lit up after that, but now I'm stuck again.
QTPitootyFL
Get the lense off the man, then put it under the light in the same room. It will light up. Then put the lense back in the hole in the man, it will open the door and you will get the candle. Put the candle in the gap in the Spirit Room, then put the Cross in the gap and the paper in the fire. Collect the heart.
ok, I dont really get why people are so confused but i'll just drop a few hints.
in the knowledge room the
candle isn't the only thing, if you
click on the draw you get a book. with a phone number in
underground room thing (can't remember the name)
when the train arrives, click on the button on the train, to make the doors open.
click near the bottom of the open door to get a phone. call the number in the book to open a new room, where you will find a
cross. if you've worked out what to do with the candle, you should be able to guess from here on in.
This is wonderful game! Bizarre and engaging. Very well done!
Here is a Walkthrough...
-To start game, click on symbols on side of cube.
-Go to room with robot (Motion). Pick up WRENCH, COG, GASOLINE, and SPARK PLUG. Use Gas in funnel of generator. Use wrench to open up panel of generator and replace the spark plug. Put the cog in the open space of the conveyor belt.
-Turn on the generator to make the robot begin to walk. Pick up the piece that pops out. Use the LENS on the over head light until it turns orange. Fit the glowing piece into the eye of the robot.
-Enter the door that opens up (Knowledge). Pick up the LIT CANDLE.
-Exit room and go to the cell room (Contained). Pick up BIBLE PASSAGE. Note the roman numerals on the wall.
(9, 15) Set clock to correct time and pick up RAZOR BLADE. Use blade on loose tile in wall (in the blood splotch in the center of the back wall.) Take SCREWDRIVER. Use screwdriver on radio and get CRUCIFIX.
-Exit room and go to the Chapel (Spirit). Use lit candle in open holder to left. Use crucifix on cross indentation. Put bible verse in the holy water. Take HEART.
-Go to train station (Transport). Note: If you see a weird TV headed guy as you exit you can't do anything with him, he is just for ambiance. Wait for train and press button by the door to open it. Pick up CELL PHONE.
-Go back to the Knowledge room. Click on crow as it passes in the right hand picture to open up a drawer. Pick up the BOOK. Inside the book is a clue on the location of a hidden door in the cell. It also has a phone number.
-Type number into cell phone (it changes every game) and click send. You will be taken to the subway and a trap door will open up. Open the panel and put the beating heart in its place.
-Go to the cell room and click where it shows you in the book to connect four yellow lines to open up the wall to a laser room.
-Make the lasers reflect the light from the machine to the head. You can set some of the mirrors to one of three different positions each to bounce the light around. The mirror connection on the far right is a red herring. Take the BRAIN.
-Go to the far back room with the head scan image and open the panel. Place the brain in its place.
Watch the bizarre ending. You are out.. or are you?
Flower:
Once you have the candles lit, the cross on the altar glows. I assume you already have the
cross from the Psych Ward Radio
. Place it on the altar. The surface of the altar should glow. Place the
bible page from the Psych Ward
on the altar and retrieve
the still-beating heart
Then, tell me what to do with it.
smjjames: The "freaky brain tunnel" is
the room accessed from the Psych Ward after the cross has been retrieved. It's the room called "Connection" but I didn't remember that part. JohnB posted how to get there.
Listening to the creepy final music right now. The three things that held me up:
1. 'Contained' and 'Motion' (I used JohnB's spoilers).
2.
Putting the little cross in the hole in the baptismal font and the bible page in the water that appears in the 'Spirit' room, after lighting the candles.
3.
Clicking on one of the moving birds in the 'knowledge' room.
_Beautifully_ drawn game -- reminds me a little bit of Myst, but creepier.
This game is entertaining, mind-boggling, informative and immersive, all without requiring anyone to misuse any of those words. There isn't any pixel hunting in this game, but you are, at times, required to click on something innocuous, occasionally with an inventory item. (Instead of clicking on something small, it's more a matter of clicking somewhere you don't know is the right place until something happens)
The setting and events are just ambiguous enough for English students to write whole essays on them, and they're fun to boot. I'd never pass up on a surreal journey into someone's mind.
The only displeasure I had (aside from having to click all over the screen a few times) was from trying to listen to the speech in the game: whether it was too echoey or the ambient music/noises were too loud, I'm glad there wasn't a lot of it, or that it wasn't too important.
Oh, and why are boxes and cubes characterized as evil in fictional settings? If they don't come as puzzles that release devils when they're solved (Cenobites, right?), they're considered more important than humanity by confused computers (Portal). This one traps you in your own mental workings, but that's still reason enough to be suspicious of it. (Wow, what a long post)
I am pretty sure I found what seems like a bug:
I had put the cog in the conveyor belt, and poured in the gasoline. I then figured the robot would start, so I clicked several times on the button. But nothing.
So I went to the other rooms in search of other things to do, and then gave up, and decided to use the walkthrough.
Doing that, I went back to the Motion room, and for some reason the robot was walking, even though I hadn't even used the wrench or the spark plug.
So I went back to the game a second time to check out this glitch ThemePark mentioned:
Yes, if you just use the gasoline and the cog for the conveyor belt, press the power button a few times, then leave, the robot will be walking when you return to the room and give you the lense. Simple bug that doesn't save much time, but a bug none-the-less.
Loved the game, amazingly put together and it kept my mind going! And thanks goes to Hyperkinetic for the walkthrough, because I got stuck after the bot room and definatly needed some help!
RedShoe, I'm glad to see that it wasn't just a fluke that occured to me.
Mad Hatter:
What you see move, is actually the second hand. The minute hand is the shortest one of them, and can be a bit hard to spot. It was for me anyway.
Eyrie:
Like RedShoe pointed out, you need to put in the fuel and the cog, use the wrench, and put in the fuse, before you can use the lense on the light.
"Motion" room bug:
Starting the generator, then inserting the cog into the treadmill will cause the robot to walk and reveal the lens, but it won't cause the lights to flicker, so you can't make the lens change to orange.
This can be solved by pressing the generator's power button again, but it would be cool if the producers fixed the coding.
Bug report for programmers:
After reading a walkthru, I clicked the lens on the light like crazy, then left the room because nothing happened due to above bug. In the main hall, I could still hear the robot walking (but without the treadmill noise), and when I returned to "Motion," the robot was walking but the black circle that covers his orange eye (until you solve the lens puzzle) was out of sync with his face.
Anyone creating a game of this serious level of pixel hunting should be banned and prisoned - and I mean it. That's a crime - more: it's a sin.
Also, I got stuck so much i read the walkthru and I seem to have encountered a bug. The walkthru says I have to turn the robot's eye orange. Well, I had done it earlier, still the door wouldn't open - but i got something like a huge black dot trying to shield the orange eye but with a slight delay. Is it meant to be there? The walkthru says nothing about it - and I don't seem to be able to do anything with it.
No big deal as I don't want to do anything with it - and with this game. I can think of soooo many more interesting things to do tan losing may hair trying to find "that one pixel"...
Claudia:
Each light has three settings: start with the light coming from the background, then work backwards. Find one that connects to it, and another that connects to that one. One of those light emitters doesn't need to be hooked up to another one
BioLarzen: My biggest acts of frustrated clicking were with the lens and the razor. I didn't know how I was supposed to figure out the lens, admittedly. Most other things are easier to figure out of you approach them calmly.
Also, the "Locked Drawers" somewhere in there don't open: they're just there to drive you mad looking for a pair of keys.
I extremely enjoyed this game. The art and animation style reminded me of Myst (Specifficley Riven: The Sequel to Myst)which earns a game infinite points for me. The ending was a bit dissapointing. If there is a sequel I think it will be
With the hospitle has the Hub and you go through The Event, occurence, consequence, and outcome.
Well, call me an idiot but I can't even get to the game. Whether I click on the above pic or any of the links I am taken to the site which is filled with adverts. I cannot get past them to actually play Synapsis. I keep clicking on 'Home', the pic of the game, etc. I just cannot get to it. At first it loads with the pic as the same on here, but no matter what or where I click, I just get more ads. Is it me?? :-(
Thank you so much, ThemePark. It was my browser, for crying out loud. However, it took me this long to be able to post because I can't remember my Typekey log in name OR password and there's no way to retrieve either, obviously.
Jay...can I have my password or correct info. e mailed to me if what I'm submitting information I can't remember on Typekey? You KNOW you'd miss my irritating self if you didn't see my comments...;-)
ThemePark, thanks again for responding; that was really nice of you. Now if I can just get through the game, lol.
I am not a number! I am a FREE MAN!
The mirrors had me going for quite a while, I'm still not sure what I did to make them work.
And though I like the surreal nature of this game, life seems to have gone over to the creepy side in the gaming world... I mean the happy ending is the asylum? Shades of Syd Barrett....
Oh dear, poor Carter.
Really enjoyed this game, bizarre as it was. Well done to the guys that made it. I didn't have a problem with pixel hunting - maybe I'm just getting used to it, but I didn't find it too bad (at least not compared to many of the room escape games out there). My only issue was in the Motion room.
Bug
Even though I'd used the spark plug, fuel and cog correctly to get the robot to walk, the lights didn't flash orange for me until I'd pressed the power button again. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be, but if so it seems unnecessarily obtuse.
Oh well, I figured most of it before I peeked at the walk through. But now I am stuck stuck stuck in the laser room. I click and I click and the little lasers move but not where I need them to be. I got the top back one to laser onto the little round thing next to the holographic image of the brain but nothing happens and I have to go now.
Maybe later. This is a nice one and I enjoyed it even if I didn't finish it. :)
I liked the graphics and atmosphere, but some objects seemed unclear - the screwdriver for example, didn't look much like a screwdriver, and you had to fit it exactly to the knob on the radio for it to work.
Otherwise, the puzzles were a little too lateral for me. But I did like it, and thought the game could be extended. It has potential!
Rewyn, I've got the same problem. After I clicked the Bible passage to load it up, I couldn't click on anything else.
A similar thing happened after I reloaded the game and clicked on the cell phone to get it to open up. I could click the buttons on the phone all I wanted, but I couldn't get the phone to go away, and I couldn't click the "(I)" link, anything in my inventory, or even the "back to center" arrow. I've clicked all over the place looking for some sort of "close" button on the phone, but to no avail.
Any help?
davidh
Yea, i can't figure out the connection room either!!! I've been at it for almost 20 min, and so i decided to look for a walkthrough to see if it would tell me how to connect it...but there;s nothing, and my brain hurts lol. And wat does "The mirror connection on the far right is a red herring." mean? o lord
yes! i beat this game and it only took me... 3 hours! =(
well for those who are stuck with the weird ring/eye the cell phone the crucifix the page from the bible and possibly other things, here are some clues so you dont feel like a total cheater (and these are in order)...
make sure the volume is on! it gives vital hints about what to do with items like the eye and crucifix
eye/ring
"you have quite an eye for detail..." is what you hear when you get this item... but to see, you need LIGHT
cell phone
if you found out what to do with the eye than its a little sad for you to be looking at this but ok here it is. call the number in the book you found in knowledge at the room where a phone most fits into THE CROWD (listen to ambience for this hint in each room)
crucifix
this is probably the most mind boggling of all items... no reaction in the spirit room... maybe its a gasoline pump handle? no, its a cricifix. just go back to the spirit room and find whats missing... arent churches usually BRIGHTER?
from here, i will help with each room
Unhidden Rooms
train station
be patient. the train is almost here. make sure you go inside...(dont bother with the telephone booth. its just a hint
containment
think about it. what other room would have so many secret hiding spots? just find the subtle hints in the room (and the metal thing you get here is in fact a razor blade... to cut stuff. duh. oh and if you cant read roman numerals, "IX:XV" is "one before ten:ten plus five")
motion
all the objects are here and this is where you should start the game. pick everything up and fix up the engine box thingy... (the rod is a spark plug and the green thing is gasoline)
spirit
like i said, just find whats missing. this should be the last room that you touch since the only time you use it is all at once and near the end
Hidden Rooms
knowledge
get the candle and book
engine
after getting the heart, put it on... the heart
connection
i dont know what to tell you. if you cant connect the lasers than i guess just keep trying. all i know is that the laser almost directly above the little platform is the one that connects to it and that i dont think you need all the lasers
the ending
it kind of freaked me out and kind of disapointed me. i didnt really absorb much so pay attention to it and make sure the volume is on. apparently something happened to David Carter like a car accident or something and so he had surgery (on his eye?) and he died (or something since it shows a church or mortuary sign and a guy crying). then it shows a hospital ward and then the mysterious box with... ahh! a freaky laughing clown! the end!
why ending ruin the whole experience
it really was sort of disappointing and there isnt likely going to be another point/click sequel considering the main character was dead before the first game started. it was kind of like that movie cloverfield where the movie is so exciting and your about to wet your pants from the suspense... then all of the sudden the credits are on the screen, the movie theater is silent for ten seconds or so and then the outcries of "that was a c****y ending!" and "what of waste of my time and money!" start erupting from the crowd. in other words, DONT WATCH CLOVERFIELD! that is unless you enjoy the extra large amount of room to speculate things such as what the monster was, why it attacked, what happened to manhatten, and why they decided to recreate godzilla except a lot worse.
I only started playing tonight, but I managed to finish it in about half an hour, without using the walkthrough. Odd, since many people seem to be having trouble, and I'm usually not very patient with these games, especially when there is pixel-hunting involved (which yes, there was, but not as bad as some I've seen).
Great game.
good game great graphics but the only thing i really dont under stand is the end, i mean wtf? u go thru a portal and it says some stuff then it says hospital. then a box falls down and it has a jester face and it laughs then it shows the credits the end. i have no clue what the heck it means sombody plz tell me.
P.S.
for anyone who is having touble with the password for level 7 here it is
POOKEY
P.S.P.
dont ask
I finally got the brain. Here is how:
First there are two rings with mirrors. We'll call the back one Ring 1 and the front on Ring 2, and reference the mirrors, roughly, to clock face directions. The first mirror you can adjust in at about 10 o'clock on Ring 2. Adjust it until it reflects to the 1 o'clock mirror on Ring 2. Next, adjust that mirror until it reflects onto 3 o'clock on Ring 1. Then adjust that mirror to reflect on 12 o'clock on Ring 1. Finally, adjust the last mirror until it reflects to the little cylinder connected to the brain cylinder. Mirrors at 10 o'clock on Ring 1 and 4 o'clock on Ring 2 are not used.
Heh ^^; sorry about the outrage and the word 'keys'
I was mad about a friend taking some of my keys an typed 'keys' instead of mirrors.
I WENT TO THE LASER ROOM AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO SO I GOT OUT THE WALKTHROUGH AND IT SAID TO USE THE MIRRORS BUT THERE ARE NONE COULD SOMEONE TELL ME THE LOCATION OF THESE SO-CALLED MIRRORS?!?!?!
First off, whenever I zoom into something (e.g. the Bible passage), I can't seem to close the zoom-thing, and so I have to re-load it. Anyone else having the same problems?
Second, when I re-loaded it, there's a man in the middle room with a TV-like thing for a head. It wasn't there the first time I got there. Anyone else like that?
Also, I keep on hearing people speaking throughout the game, but I can't hear them clearly. Does anyone know what they're actually saying?
Last, I know this sounds really stupid, but is this game bloody, scary, or something like that?
I appreciate anyone who's willing to answer me. :)
Great graphics...SO well done. Unfortunately I found the game frustrating (yup...the laser room). Was on the brink of quitting when I randomly came up with the 'solution'....although I have zero understanding of why or what it is. Even in a surreal context, there has to be some degree of reason for doing something, and that didn't apply in this game. (also, I didn't get the ending ????)
It's twisted, psychotic, and beautiful...just the way I like it! I love this concept and I hope to see more of this type of game...sequels please!
It is fabulous to find a game that is abstract with substance. Nothing worse than fighting with a game that's weird "just because"...Synapsis does not have that problem. Excellent bit of entertainment!
For those who are stuck with the brain area, I have here a screen shot that will show where the 'mirrors' are supposed to go.
just copy and paste :D https://jayisgames.com/images/hs_pam_synapsis_leannalynnx3_brain.jpg
How do you get past the
Laser room?
where you have to make the lasers point to the head? Can someone make a photograph explaining how much you have to click each laser bulb or something? Im having a hard time on that part.
Also has anyone seen a scary moment like the
random moment and end moment?
And also if your wondering the two scary guys are
T.V. Head guy and clown guy.
And they happen at (see second spoiler) so yeah.
Also anyone thinking what they are mean't to do.
they are mean't to give you nightmares
Soooo yeah. I havn't seen them yet but I will find out.
Happy gaming!
Chromestone.
My bad! The clown guy wasnt suspose to scare you! Sorry. Its just that the comments on Kongregate looked like it was saying it was scary. Sorry! But the T.V. head guy is mean't to scare you (because he is scary for a reason. What do you think hes going to do? Get out his remote and put on Comedy Central? Naaaaah. Lol) sooooooo yyyeeeaaahhh. I still havnt seen T.V. head freak though but I will find him (If only I got a friend beside me. LOL. Im not going to suffer another heart attack again like I did with the Heart rate upgrade on Upgrade complete 2. Lolololololol).
Happy gaming (until you see the T.V. head freak (I really need to stop talking about him) . Lol)!
