Another game for qwerty keyboards owners only. Too bad.
Hint to the game developers : All keyboards in the world have arrows keys.
Thanks.
Tell me when this game is playable.
shame that only 97% of people use qwerty keyboards...they're just not hitting their market are they?
I got as far as Gimme in chapter 2, and now I can't continue. Whether I spew at the top of the bottom of the trapped pill, it seems to get stuck in a corner. Help?
I'm stuck in the same part as Pure, so I just gave up.
Interesting game, little bit fun, but hard to do things.
Pure and Symar, here's how to get past Gimme:
Spew from the top until it drops into the corner, then stop spewing, walk a little closer, and spew again from the top until it comes off the spikes.
It's pretty easy if you don't spew continuously shouldn't take more than a couple of tries to get it.
Remember that you can walk through the goop to get to the pill. It doesn't need to spew all the way to you. It only needs to move off the spikes, then you can walk over to the pill and eat it even if there's goop in the way.
This is pretty tough with a touchpad, I agree. Cute and frustrating, hurrah!
"close enough to breath on the spikes"?
breath is the noun, breathe is the verb. It's a surprisingly common typo which is easily corrected by thinking of yourself saying the words while you're typing them.
[Corrected. Thanks. -Ed.]
And I thought it was only in Death Metal that the topic of "drowning in vomit" would receive a proper treatment.
Kidding aside, this game is actually pretty fun once I got over the concept of using vomit in this way.
(and I do like Death Metal btw)
To complete Gimme just do the straightforward thing
You need to jump up there after pushing it up there
Wow. You wouldn't play this game if you have actually witnessed the agony a bulimic sibling goes through with the act of vomiting and eating it again and then vomiting again. And then the huge eyes of the judging scientist/doctor are a little to close to home. This one I'll sit out...
I'm having problems with my login.
Let me clarify, by "obvious" I meant "straightforward."
I love the site, btw.
[Edit: Thanks! I edited your previous comment as directed. And if you're still having login troubles, please send us an email to our contact address (at jayisgames.com) and we'll try to help with it. -Jay]
I'm stuck on the 4th level in Chapter 3, 'Slow Descent'. I kinda know what I'm supposed to do, but it's not working. Help, anyone?
AHHHHH! I can't get out of the level editor screen!
I can't get past the slip.... can't hit the button in the top left corner. :(
I've hit the other two. What am I missing?
and the answer to that is spacebar lol. that's what i get for not looking at the controls.
Slow descent took me a lot of tries - keep in mind that there are multiple possible paths to your target.
To exit the map editor, use escape!
...I'm working on Mighty Putty. I can't get the hang of this black stuff yet. Stupid slippery black stuff.
Oh, wait. I think I just figured out what I'm meant to do.
This black stuff is ANNOYING. I apparently need great heaping globs of it before it will protect me from spikes.
Even getting about 2 "drops" thick, it doesn't afford any protection.
It's a pity this game can only be played with a QWERTY keyboard. I have to change the mapping each time I play. But hey, I just represent 3% of the market so why would I complain?
I've now reached level 40-something, Schism. I must have died 30 times already... this is going to be the end of me.
Seriously, I hate having to use the white stuff. It has a tendency of moving out from under me, getting stuck to the walls where it doesn't do any good, and leaving columns of less-dense clouds that I fall straight through.
Otherwise, the mere fact that I've stuck with the game long enough to play so far through it should be a strong indicator that I love the game.
I think the gameplay mechanic has a lot of potential and it was quite well done. However, I think the issues raised in the analysis section of the review keep the game from becoming great.
Most of the presentation is really well done though.
Great game (once you get past the torrents of puke), but terribly laggy. I have turned off the background animation and have the quality on low but it still is really bad.
Anyway, I'm stuck on 54 Dive. I know you have to
use your puke to slow your descent to the white cloudy stuff, and I can (usually) manage that, but I always seem to hit the spikes on the way back, after getting the switch. There's not enough white puke on the screen!
Can anyone help?
I am stuck on Gimme and I cannot get up to the platform. I jump, I click behind me, I fall down.. I feel like I'm missing something really basic behind this mechanism. Any tips?
Well, tymbri, I recommend that you look at the spoilers posted earlier - other people have had trouble with Gimme.
I'm now tackling the last level of the bonus chapter. I think I have a problem when I'd rather throw myself into that challenge over and over rather than work on assignments that are due soon.
I'm stuck in Longjump in chapter 1. Don't have enough puke.
My thoughts.
I finally completed the game...
I liked
The general "use puke" mechanic and the introduction of a new type of puke every chapter, which kept things interesting.
The visual style characteristic of McMillen's other games.
I didn't like
The lack of plot development over so many levels - the ending scene doesn't do justice to the difficulty of getting to it.
Said difficulty - some levels are so finely balanced in terms of having to make very precise jumps and having *just* enough puke to do it. "Dive" and "Schism" come to mind as particularly difficult. The collision detection with spikes is VERY ANNOYING. Both of these things feel as if they make the game *artificially* difficult.
Some general tips:
Think of the white stuff as an "anti-gravity field". You can't spew it in front of where you want to go. You should either set up a field of white stuff before you start moving, or use enough of it to cover the area in stages.
You can climb up a wall with very little effort using the black stuff. Just jump and at the top of the jump, spew two or three drops at the wall, then bounce off them immediately.
You do not really need to use the black stuff to cover spiked areas. (Except for the last bonus level, maybe.) It's not reliable.
For "Schism":
1. Hit the switch in the top left.
2. Spew enough white stuff to jump/fly over to the top right. Try to be efficient though! While you're airborne, fill the central cavity with white stuff.
3. Hit the switch in the top right.
4. Fly down to the central cavity, eating any spare white stuff very carefully if you can.
5. As you fall, you need to be spewing downwards to prepare for your slow descent.
6. There should be enough white stuff left for you to navigate the bottom chamber. Good luck, because you really need it on this level.
For "Dive":
1. Move right off the platform (without jumping). Spew downwards, which should make the white stuff bunch up to either side. Make sure you fall in a large cloud of it to the right of where you were spewing. There is a good chance that you will just die at this stage.
2. Swim over to the switch, eating any spare white stuff carefully.
3. Swim carefully to the exit.
I got as far as the first pill that gives you white "spew", but couldn't get it to pile quite high enough to get to the exit.
Then I took a break, and now I can't even get past the second or third screen (I'm too angry to look back to see which).
Dora is right in what she implies (if doesn't quite come right out and say it): too often the "challenge" in this game relies totally on every molecule of sludge being in exactly the right position... while you could play any given level 500+ times and not get that exact, correct "flow". Poor, poor design on a neat concept. Unplayable, unfortunately.
I liked this game.
The gameplay was unique enough so it never felt like any other platformer, and challenging enough without being impossible.
The 'solutions' seemed always intuitive enough, and not repetitive in their style.
My only gripe is with the liquid simulations which follow by rules that are sometimes random at best (since when shooting a ball of vomit at an approaching acid ball makes the later shoot at twice the speed in my direction?).
I've had fun with this game.
@greg: Every major operating system (including Ubuntu) allows you to set up a hotkey to switch your keyboard layout to QWERTY. Very helpful for the annoying WASD games.
@LoZfan03: You mean 97% of English keyboard users. ;) (Though I happen to be part of the 3% who use Dvorak.)
Re: the game
Fun, but I got frustrated when it ignored my critically timed jump or mouse click for the 30th time. Too processor intensive, I guess.
@keith, yes altough on linux/ubuntu systems you can remap your keyboad, which works with almost all aplications, but the flash plugin strangly ignores it. out of some reasons it detects keyboard more basicly, well blame adobe for making it pretty bad. (and gnash hardly works with most games)
@LoZfan0, 98% of all percent numbers are pulled out of the a... thin set of air. Actually large parts of the world don't have a qwerty keyboard.
Any decent game should have its keys configureable, and in this game it actually should work with wasd AND arrows at least,I wouldn't like arrows that much with a game that uses a mouse too... but it never hurts to give the user more options.
And this is a free flash game. Not everything in this world is about "market", and I generally don't like people who believe all their live should only turn around "the market", as it would be a new kind of god. Yes market is an important factor, but not everything is just about markets... And especially even if only 3% of people wouold not have a qwerty. Since when did discrimination of a minority suddendly become a good idea?
for "Dive"
1.spew MOST of your vomit onto one spot a little to the right of the platform
2. walk off and aim for a tall pile of cloud vomit to stop your descent
3. dont eat any of the cloud vomit, and make sure to keep moving. you can use a tall pile to launch yourself across the gap created by your green vomit
4. KEEP TRYING! it took me forever to get past this level even when i knew what to do
Lovin the visual style of this game. The backgrounds crack me up with that scientist fellow studying and judging you constantly. And Spewer's vacuous smile is hilarious, especially when he's sucking up puke and you steer him by your cursor - it always looks like he's become distracted from his eating, like, "ooOOOoo, wass over der?!"
But it was a little annoying how "hoppy" your character is after landing a jump, which doesn't lend itself well to bouncing about. In order to get a jump to consistently reach his average jump height, you have to stop and let the dude settle. That tripped me up a few times. As did the unforgiving spike hit-detection, but that goes without saying.
Overall, I'd say this is much less brutally unforgiving than Meatboy, the other game I know McMillen for. Then again, it's so much less precise in every way.
I really hope they make a sequel to this, as I have no doubt it will be a step up, and therefore awesome.
JIGuest, do you not think you're taking this a bit too far? It's just a Flash game.
I'm suprised no-one's really gotten into the level editor yet... it really is rather nice to use and not overly difficult...
So here's my first attempt, Think Tank:
eNrFkkkOwjAMRa/CAT7IQ5y0yjVYR2IHQmLF/UWGUmiVIlhRf9lu61c7VlXAYAc2qEL5F1UUrGD6TlaByikVB/Ed0eIul2f/wuaCsPbPxzoWTxPm25RbzbjbrJhrcehpsgUxf8Rxv9VKmdRhSXqFD9uizpSV9gJv2+L5rMUMho8TOnpfTwMa1F9GZz32T4vH8+V23d1Pt2tkokjRGUQsmgw5CkbQwVIMBleAvSSTfDzKVUlDy7hm4Zmw1g2kEtvrSClf9b9K6QFd8qRE
Ahh, getting rewards for projectile vomiting. Takes me back to my college years.
I need help with 24, "A Gentle Push".
I hate how vomit doesn't follow the pricipal that liquids follow the path of least resistance. I'm saying this because im having trouble with the level "Precautions" in the bonus set.
Any help with Gluttony? Can't figure it out.
Can someone help with "cloud swimming?" reply asap please (:
Can anybody help with "a gentle push"
"A Gentle Push"
Obviously there's not enough vomit to get you up to the fruit, but maybe there's enough to make things happen the other way round...
"Gluttony"
Argh, this one is quite tricky. Get onto the ledge above you, then try vomit into the left-hand switch - you'll likely need to bounce it off the walls of the alcove the switch is in. You get then get the fruit and use the vomit from it to trigger the switch to your left - but make sure you use as little as possible! Collect all the used vomit you can from below, then use it to propel yourself to the middle ledge. Gobble up yet more used vomit, then go for the puke-operated switch above you. The rest should be easy - you just propel yourself to the other side, gobble up the fruit then hit the switch in the same manner as the other one. The trouble with this level is not landing on those cursed spikes...
"Cloud Swimming"
Nothing much to help with, really. Just go to the left first and stay as high as you can - make sure you're pushing some "cloud" into a path below you, then use that to come back. Then you can just float over to the other side.
Meh, another small level I've made, not overly difficult:
Swimming With Sharks

just so everyone knows the black goop can squash you and you will die
Man, this game is quite good-and vulgar-but it is a good kind of vulgar. The not so offensive kind.
Hehe... you can do a very good job of glitching the with some... unusual, yet possibly useful results...

The corner ones take a bit more effort, but they can be done...
Hey, y'all! Longtime lurker, first-time poster. I finally decided to sign up for an account here on JIG because I love games and I'd enjoy talking to everyone here. You guys know your stuff! I've found plenty of new favorites here, as well as some oldies I turn to for comfort now and again.
I'm introducing myself here because I've been playing Spewer for a while even though I got stuck. Those of you unable to play due to the WASD controls will be happy to know that the original Newgrounds upload has been updated to let gamers use the arrow keys! Hooray! Dunno if there's any particular reason why the link to the game in the review was changed to the page on Kongregate, but the modification doesn't apply there . . . not yet, anyway.
I have a QWERTY keyboard AND a touchpad myself and I've not had too much trouble with the controls (as surprising as that sounds) but this is good news. I'm better with the arrows.
My thoughts on Spewer:
I cringed a bit at first (a game involving puke is not something you see every day) but I'm having a lot of fun. I'm stuck on Gimme again after accidentally erasing my progress---darn it---but I'll be back on track soon enough. Especially with the addition of the arrow keys. ^_^
[Edit: Requested corrections have been made. -Pam]
Three bugs are preventing me from completing the final level, and made the rest of the game really annoying as well.
1. Sometime I can't spew in midair.
2. Sometime I can't eat up my spew.
3. (Worst) Sometimes, when I click the mouse, all the spew will uncontrollably come out.
Buggy games are buggy games, and if they're poor quality than it's just skippable. But it's really frustrating when a well-conceived game like this comes along and pulls you in, but the creators for some reason neglect to fully test and de-bug it.
Thanks for putting up with me, Pam. ^_^
As Futurama's Professor Farnsworth says, "Good news, everyone!" I checked Kongregate to see if the updated version of Spewer is now available there, and it is.
I also found a complete walkthrough for the game on YouTube. Just search for "Spewer Complete Walkthrough" and a bunch of videos by a user named kongquake should come up.
I'm, having trouble with "A Gentle Push"
I don't seem to have enough puke to make it to the top, even after knocking the fruit down.
Topher's right. There isn't enough "fuel" to get to the top of the cliff, no matter where you start or how you do it.
I've made sure I'm lined up with the exact same spot as the guy in the YouTube video, I'm clicking at exactly the same time, and what works for him does not work for me.
Either the video's fake, or something is broken in the game, because that level is completely unsolvable in the version loading for me.
Good job, developer. Too bad I'll never see the rest of it.
could any of you who have beat the game use the level editor to recreate the game, in such a way us who are stuck could see what the rest of the game is like?
Oddly enough, my own comment seems to have proven prophetic:
Reloading the game "magically" allowed me to succeed at "Gentle Push" by emulating the YouTube video. Fifteen or twenty times previous doing the exact same thing, and no dice, but as soon as you hit "F5", everything seems to work. Weird. It's even consistently working now (for that level).Maybe there IS something going on with the game, and it doesn't just hate me.
Now, "Carve"? THAT'S freakin' impossible. Sure, one or two of us is bound to get the cloud-crap in exactly the right spot... but the other 40,000 of us exist purely to give their luck statistical meaning. It would be nice if there were levels that depended on skill or intelligence instead of luck, but that's just me.
I really need the walkthrough for Content Delivery in Chapter 2, please
Made it thru Content Delivery, I just can't pass Mighty Putty now...
Gobsmacked:
That's odd. It didn't work until you hit F5? I followed the video exactly and it worked for me . . . hmm.
I'm stuck on Filler now. I always seem to run out of puke just before I reach the exit. But I'll keep trying. If I make it to Carve before you beat it, Gobsmacked, I'll try to help you out.
well, the thought of using and reusing puke in excessive amounts to get through levels and obstacles didn't really appeal to me at first but after a while of playing you forget its BARF! i like to think of it as slime rather than puke. it doesn't LOOK like real barf and the little thingy is so cute!
especially when it gets cloud barf! then it looks like a super mario BOO!
and the scientist looks pretty funny too, he reminds me of dexter from dexters laboratory.
quite a lovely game actually once you get past the barf and stuff.
For Filler, if you want a spot of help:
Once you've done the top left and top right switches, then do the lower right one first. You should be able to pike up all the puke again after that. Then, to do the left one, maybe you oughta get in the corridors...
Jump from the steps over the exit, using the puke to propel you into the gap. You'll only need one drop to do the switch, leaving you ample to get out.

Thanks, Sruixan. I haven't beaten the level yet, but I know I've got the right approach. I just seem to use up all my puke entering the gap . . . I have enough to get out, but then I'm running on empty and all my fuel, if you will, is stuck in the gap where I can't get it.
JIGuest, what exactly are you having trouble with? It's not the directional keys (we've got arrows now). Maybe I can help you figure out the best way to position your hands on your keyboard. I know I have the QWERTY kind you hate, but I've figured out a few tricks while trying to figure out how to play games that aren't too touchpad-friendly. Good luck and don't give up!
ATTENTION:you dont need a qwerty keryboard, it responds to the arrow keys, thats what im useing
I can't seem to get past "the crux". Specifically the area of the white puke. I HATE the levels with white puke.
I am in love with this game. (And, surprisingly enough, it's not just my immature fascination with puke!) Perhaps the most wonderful thing about it - aside from the whole concept and mechanics - is the level editor.
Which, of course, just begs for community response. User generated levels are rather hard to find online though (or perhaps I just have awful Googling skills).
Anyway, here's my level, Columns!

how do u do a bridge 2 far??
Interesting game, I really like the idea. Some levels, however, are a bit too difficult (To me anyways.
I'm having troubles beating "Mighty Putty". Even after eating all of my vomit, I don't seem to have enough to finish the level.

why don't you get a qwerty key board instead of getting every game developer to make arrow key games? you do realize that it is much more comfortable for humans to use the wasd key rather that the arrow keys in conjunction with the mouse?(unless of course you are one of the 15% of the global population that is left handed?)i guess you could shift the keyboard to the left, but this would be inconvenient to the dunno-how-many thousand or million or billion people who have small computer tables.
you are also limiting the range of games you can play by using a non-qwerty keyboard(or maybe yours is the kind that can switch to qwerty.)
games that use wasd are very playable in fact, they are more playable(user friendly) than games that use arrow keys. game developers aren't going to reduce comfort of playing their games to help the miserable 3% of comp users who aren't smart enough to buy a qwerty keyboard.

i may be misunderstanding your comment but read in case i haven't(you may be slamming Greg but i thought you wrote this cuz you are a non qwerty user)
if you knew this, why didnt you buy a qwerty?
i think it goes without saying that game developers will have no qualms about making awesome games that a whopping 97% can play but a measly 3% cant. most of the non qwertys can change that signals to qwerty.
p.s. sarcasm is not a very good social skill(i know neither is my rudeness, but through experience with the people who arent my close friends, its the only way to get my point across.)
to everyone
buy a qwerty keyboard instead of a non qwerty and save yourself from dissapointment of finding an awesome game that uses wasd

i know everything should not revolve around profits, but if you have ever tried to develop a game, you wold know that having more than oneset of controls is incredibly difficult. it seems so easy(just add the new control keys) but its not!(i have tried to make a game but it was glitched and i deleted it. i cant remember how i did it though it was something like a feeder game. move, eat , grow)to make a new set of contol keys, it is just as hard as making the first set and putting them together requires much extra work. this makes the game very laggy too. there is a game , madagascar, that can have 3 sets of contols. it lags wen the secondary and tertiary controls are in effect
descriminating against the minority is not a good i dea but is less of a bad idea than the only other option: if the game only has wasd, 97% of comp users can play well, while 3% can still play, but with some difficulty. if the game had arrows too, 100% of the population would have a laggy game. this is decreasing the appeal to 97% of the target audience to help just 3% of the pop.
its not a good idea to descriminate, but its a worse idea to harm the mojority to help the minority. it would be easier to make 3% of the pop change than to harm 97% of the pop and if they're not happy, they will have to change and then the game developers can remove to wasd controls. a bit troublesome eh?
in this case the difference between the major- and minority is a bit larger than usual
K, i tried F5 repeatedly to pass "Gentle Push" and its not working! I've eaten the fruit and all. I really need help on this
Is there some sort of secret to use the red puke to make you go up faster or something? this is really fustrating :(
How do you get past the long jump?
Ok, so on A Gentle Push
A lot of people can't understand how to do it.
I didnt until I watched the video jump a couple times
The way to do it is, stand on the ground near the exit
Point down
Jump
Before you're even a CENTIMETER off the ground, start spewing
The force of the vomit bouncing off the ground will bounce up INTO you, pushing you up in addition to the force of your jump and the propulsion of the vomit
THAT
is how
to solve it
how do you do long jump...
for anyone having trouble on level: gentle push
the guy before me said that you have to time the spew right, well, that's true, but there's a different way from what he's saying. I know I tried his way, a lot :(
get right next to the wall and angle your vomit shot, thus projecting you higher and faster because I found that vomiting directly down causes a disruption in your ascent speed because the spew has nowhere to go but to just collect under you. spewing at an angle shot me up there no problem, maybe a picture will demonstrate this better:

How Do I Get Passed "Long Jump"
For all the people who, of the life of them, cannot figure out Long Jump:
Take a running leap, holding down the right arrow key, then hold down jump and spew at the same time. You'll pseudo-glide across, but let go of the mouse button a block or so away from the ledge, so as not to waste vomit. Hit the switch, and repeat the jump.
i need help with content delivery.
i dont know what to do.
Can anyone help me with Holy Tears?
Gobsmacked, you seem to be hating on the game because YOU cant finish the levels.... Anyways, the game is really fun, and my only complaint is that DANG WHITE SPEW! I have a great thinking mind, unfortunately I am cursed with the worst luck known to mankind. The white spew randomly opens holes just as i wswim into it, and drops me onto spikes. Sometimes it gets pushed ahead of me - another death. Sometimes it even appears to be absolutely fine, and yet when i swim through it, an anomaly opens in midair in front of me and makes the white stuff intangible, so that I sink straight through it. >:( Well, im done on my rant against white spew. This game is absolute brilliance. Wyndclaw out.
Some tips for those with problems on multiple levels.
effects
filling gaps can produce helpful effects.
puking at a slight angle JUST as you jump helps out too.
to help save puke, you can jump up two square at a distance of five squares.
short bursts can reach farther than longer one in levels with the upgraded switches.
goo colors
black goo is slippery, and very easy to jump on (and sometimes through)
white goo moves easily. choose a path that can reuse the cloud
red goo goes farther than green.
recycling the yellow goo prevents loss of wanted blocks. shoot a LITTLE amount at an unwanted block and leave your mouth open
For Content Delivery:
You need to use your puke to shoot your way up the left side, block by block. Then you use your puke to lift yo to hit he button, then drop back down to the very bottom. Eat up all your puke, then shoot yourself back to the second block up from the bottom... then, use your puke to shoot yourself to where the anti-gravity pill is.
Tah dah! It took me forever to pass that level, I tried filling the bottom and jumping from there, and I tried jumping from the top block on the left-hand side, but that didn't work. Finally, today, I passed it =D
Argh. I'm on Carve now, I got the white pill and all that
shoot your green puke from the bottom, THEN climb up the side and eat it.
I'm just working on finishing the level, now =/ *Sigh*
Argh... can someone help me with "Harvesting"? I. Keep. Dying.
For Grind:
After getting all the fruit to get as much puke as you can, don't bother trying to get up the left side to get the white pill... just position yourself on the right side so you'll shoot up through the spikes into the exit.
This game is SO awesome! Spewer looks so cool. Once I almost finished the game, but when I came back, my progress was gone. Oh, well. By the way, I always use the arrow keys, meaning that using the WASD keys isn't the only way to play ;).
I don't get the last part where
SPOILER ALERT PEOPLE THIS IS THE END!
the guy with funny hair puts spewer into the other one's IV drip.
In "The Slip":
Should all of the goo come down, or is it okay that some is still up there? Cuz that's what I'm stuck on
For me whenever I try to do longjump, instead of gliding like he should he just keeps falling and dies :(
Stuck on acid reflux. I get all the way over to the side bu i cant get by the last block without melting the one beneath me.
Yikes! Oh! Yow! Ouch! I can't get the white pill on Carve!
Gimme is stupid. Make the square smaller for gods sake¬_¬.
The mother of all frustrations! I can't get the low fly (or something) right.
Anyway, really creative and original! :) I recognize a sound effect also present in The Binding of Isaac, when you take a pill.
In The Slip,
you don't fill up the area to reach the top left button, you spew while jumping to give yourself extra height.
I usually hate video walkthroughs, but this one helped: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLJ3ehFxwK8
