I actually made it in part by manually changing some of the numbers in the DNA of a hybrid flower I made. Kinda cheating, but it's cool to see what happens. You can make a "tree" by changing some of the first few numbers to big ones (around 50, or 100 if you're daring). But then it starts running a little slower.

Funny enough, I'm STILL playing plant tycoon. This felt a little lacking comparatively- it lacked a sense of atmosphere or accomplishment.
I quickly became bored with breeding an infinite number of flowers that tended to overwrite each other in ways I least liked. I tried playing with the dna manually and accomplished nothing.
Then I noticed if you misformatted the dna, it would plant a sqaure. The DNA for this sqaure seemed to be the 'base' DNA. Out of curiosity, I planted 5 of them- exact same dna, all VERY basic, and hit auto-evolve.
And THEN the toy seemed much, much more interesting. Mutation and random selection, but it already seemed to me that there was some kind of tendency towards more complex flowers.
So I left it on overnight and came back to this PC-crusher:

After carefully combining together many of the plants here, I finally managed to get something that I REALLY like. =D
Something I noticed, whenever you clone a plant, its genetic code changes. Usually its very slight, but one while cloning a plant its leaves got way darker and the bark changed from a light purple to a brown. =)
I made two plants I really like just by letting a single plant mutate. The first is a big, short, blue sunflower.

I really enjoyed this game. I think something that would beneficial to this game would be the ability to change DNA stranges for leaves, roots, thorns, "venus flytrap" things, bulbs, plants that grow down rather than up, or even able to add bugs for the plants to become immune and evolve to protect against. Beautiful game.
To all those who tweaked the DNA and posted it on here... those are cool! (= I tried Neonaxes's idea, and it is pretty nice, with plants just exploding every few seconds and evolving.

I really love this. I always wanted to make something similar to this, like evolution simulators, or life simulators.
But you know what would be really cool? environment! something that would take off the arbitrariness of the mutation. So that we could see the actual evolution as it happens in nature. for example, if the plants have more chances of mixing with another plant to generate a new one if they have bright colors. so the tendency would be the plants become even brighter.
great fun though, I like to keep it running minimized while i'm doing something else.

With the following leters, the ones that I did not list have no apparent effect on the flower, so, rather than writing "I don't know" several different ways, I have simply excluded them.
A
This affects the heighth of the flower. The higher the number, the taller the flower.
B
This hexadecimal is the color of your stem. Don't bother changing the 0 out in front, just change the next 6 digits to match an HTML color code.
C
The number of flowers your plant will have.
D
This affects the roundness of the petals. The effects are subtle. Lower numbers result in harder edges while higher numbers result in smother edges.
E
A number from 20 to 60, this is how tall the stem grows after the branches stem off.
F
Affects the size of the flower's core. Set between 0 and 1.
G
The width of the stem.
H
The speed that the stem grows, from 1 to 1.5.
I
How far apart the flowers are spaced.
K
The size of the flower's core.
L
How many layers of petals the flower will have.
M
Seems to affect the potential for the leaves being offset to the side. Results are subtle.
Q
The width of the border around the petals.
T
Changes the color of the border around the flower's petals.
U
Affects the color of the center of the flower. Again, this is done with color codes.
V
Use a color code to set the color of the petals. Note that this is just the general color, and each leaf has potential to deviate from it.
W
How big the center of the flower is.
X
How large the petals are.
Z
The number of petals on each flower.
AA
How much the petals in deeper layers appear. Will only work if L is greater than one. Set between 1 and 2.. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.
AB
How much the petals dent inwards. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.

Walkthrough Guide

This walkthrough (or "guide") explains what each element in your DNA coding does, how you can change it, and is aimed to assist you in genetically engineering the plant of your dreams.
Let's start out with some basic DNA. This is the DNA of the little pink flower that you start out with.

Now, beyond the spoiler tags, I will explain what every one of these numbers does.
This chart shows how the letters match up with the numbers:
A, B, C, D, E, F,
G, H, I, J, K, L,

With the following leters, the ones that I did not list have no apparent effect on the flower, so, rather than writing "I don't know" several different ways, I have simply excluded them.
A
This affects the heighth of the flower. The higher the number, the taller the flower.
B
This hexadecimal is the color of your stem. Don't bother changing the 0 out in front, just change the next 6 digits to match an HTML color code.
C
The number of flowers your plant will have.
D
This affects the roundness of the petals. The effects are subtle. Lower numbers result in harder edges while higher numbers result in smother edges.
E
A number from 20 to 60, this is how tall the stem grows after the branches stem off.
F
Affects the size of the flower's core. Set between 0 and 1.
G
The width of the stem.
H
The speed that the stem grows, from 1 to 1.5.
I
How far apart the flowers are spaced.
K
The size of the flower's core.
L
How many layers of petals the flower will have.
M
Seems to affect the potential for the leaves being offset to the side. Results are subtle.
Q
The width of the border around the petals.
T
Changes the color of the border around the flower's petals.
U
Affects the color of the center of the flower. Again, this is done with color codes.
V
Use a color code to set the color of the petals. Note that this is just the general color, and each leaf has potential to deviate from it.
W
How big the center of the flower is.
X
How large the petals are.
Z
The number of petals on each flower.
AA
How much the petals in deeper layers appear. Will only work if L is greater than one. Set between 1 and 2.. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.
AB
How much the petals dent inwards. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.
