Proke, a word game developed by Peter Hastings, is all about vocabulary building... literally! The goal of it is to build a mighty tower to the heavens, and your only tools are quick thinking and linguistic fortitude. While racing the clock, type a word that has the designated prefix or suffix, or for extra height, both. The faster you type, the higher you'll build. Extra points can be scored for typing the letters that appear in Bonus Bubbles, or doing combos of words with same prefix/suffix. Proke is a light kind of game, but it's very addictive.

Uh, am I missing something? Why can't I use the letters S, W, V, or Z?

oh, nevermind, it's the Mac's weird magic mapping my dvorak keyboard to qwerty. Those keys are all symbols on a qwerty keyboard. that's annoying.

A delightfully challenging vocabulary game!

if you add an 's' to all words with the three letters you start with as well as for example
provoke provokes provoking provoked; they all work

This is a fun one. Am I missing it or is there no way to add more time. It's just one minute? That's the only downfall...the continuous word building would be a blast for word nerds.

elle: Each checkpoint you reach adds time to the clock. You can store up a lot of time if you're quick.

Anyway, this game is awesome. Can't put it down. My best so far is 37289 meters =)

I don't have a qwerty-keyboard, which makes this game impossible. Too bad... : (

Love it! Getting to Rank 9 is a pain (how many times I mistyped "equiexcellency"), but it sure feels good.

Simple but well executed.

This is fun! The creator could easily make this a much longer game by simply adding a mechanic that allows the countdown to increase. That and a very slow gradient toward purple to black as the tower gets higher. :)

I do not find this difficult at all. Seriously, Major Scrabble buff? Already memorized 90% of the CSW? Really? This is not much of a challenge for me. But it may be good for the unenlightened humanoids of this universe. Also, the BTD5 walkthrough will have such a massive delay, it won't probably be finished at all.

choice of a 'timed' or 'untimed' mode would be much more enjoyable

I keep getting trojan horse threats when I click "play proke". Just lettin ya know.

[The game is fine, I assure you. I've scanned the site, I've had my web hosting provider scan the site, and JIG is free from malware of any kind. -Jay]

Timed mode would be much more thought-provoking. As it is, I'm only concerned with how fast I can correctly type simple words.

Ah! Absolutely love it! It's a real-life FUNdamental game! Cute and simplistic; its just plain addicting! I'd love to see it as an i-phone game. (P.S.- Yes! Just reached rank 3 with a highscore of 1404! Woo hoo!)

is it just me or is "Use 15 words that have the letters W and K" ridiculously hard? because of it, i can't get to Rank 8

Reply

e7odie, I used a few of the same words and changed their tense when I had the right prefix/suffix available. A few examples:

working (workers, workably, reworked)
awakened (reawakes, awakening)
winkers (winking, winked)
wicked (wickedest, wicking)
knowledge (knowledgeable, acknowledge, knowing)
wonky (wonkier, wonkiest)
awkward (awkwardly, awkwardness)

When you have a few choice root words, it's easier to just plug 'em in. Hope that helps!

thanks Trinn, that really did help. i just had to have a list of words to look at while i was going along. now i just have to do it again with Q and X for the next rank *sigh*

Somehow I got to Rank 9. It might have destroyed my brain though.

needs a bigger dictionary. Granualized is a word right?...

Reply

Nope, sorry it's not. Perhaps you're thinking of granular/granularized?

only thing it needs is a place for global scores.

it's not as beautifully designed as word machine [to which it elsewise shares quite a few similarities] but it plays just about as well.
