P.I. Chronicles: Skull Island
One of the delights of Skull Island is that it is hiding what amounts to a whole second game within its confines. Take your time and really explore and a wide range of exciting new vistas will open up, taking the story in wild directions that have absolutely nothing to do with your original rescue mission and turning the whole game into a very surreal experience. Take the chance, explore the jungle (and points beyond), and immerse yourself in one of the more complex and satisfying escape games we've seen this year.

I'm stuck!
So far I have:
bucket of water, first aid kit, metal pipe, slingshot, berries, waterproof marker, magnet, cereal, bowl, plate, glass, whisk, milk, butter, ice cream bar, mushrooms, net, and mango
I don't know how to:
get the skull free from the sign, get the stick with sap to reach farther into the tree hole, get an egg from the nest below the cliff, cut open the snake, or get past Jamal
I'm shocked there isn't a walkthrough yet. =) There's usually one up by the time I try an escape game!
Escapist -
Perhaps you need to:
Attach something to the end of the sticky stick to get what's in the tree. Then, just as you did with the bucket of water, you can substitute something in the fisherman's hand to get what he's holding now.
Wildflower -
The fisherman is holding a bucket, you need to get it from him. Click on his glasses for a hint.
Ginny-
I got what you mentioned, but I still can't figure out how to-
-get below the cliff. I've interacted with the chief and the medicine-man-to-be. I have the jump rope now, too. I've gotten rid of the ice cream and cereal. I'm just stumped on getting the eggs and finding the bananas. =S
So far, this one's been fun and fairly intuitive!

131. *hint* You might want to save here… *hint*
132. Talk to chieftain.
133. - Yes, everything you asked for is here.
100% Completion:
Make sure you *don't* tell the chief that you've brought him everything he asked for. (It's ok to give him the food items as you acquire them, though.)
Also make sure you've exhausted all the conversational possibilities with all of the characters - it'll save you some time if you don't have to keep backtracking.
Go look at the moon and find the phone number. (Hint: telescope + cliff.)
Ask Tony to dial the number.
Go find the spaceship. (Hint: remember where you found the mushrooms?)
Go to the moon. Talk to the shady alien and get the 3-D glasses.
Go inside the restaurant and talk to the astronaut. Make sure he mentions what he needs.
Talk to the restaurant employee and figure out what combination of menu items costs 25 … um, monetary units. (Sorry, forget what they were called.) You'll probably need to talk to him repeatedly. (Hint: fries are bad for you.) (Hint 2: shake it, baby.) (Hint 3: go for plain.)
Go to the bathroom. Examine the graffiti, and check for loose tiles. (Hint: a good pocket knife sure comes in handy.)
Go back outside and ask the shady alien if he has what the astronaut needs.
Back on earth, give the 3-D glasses to Tony, and get the cookbook from the chef. (Not chief.) Also, if you haven't already, go talk to the nearsighted cannibal, then the professor. If you do enough talking, the nearsighted cannibal will go to the beach.
Get into the submarine (if you point to the right place, there will be an arrow above the hatch). Talk to the vendor.
Get the key from the blue plant. (Hint: magnet on stick.)
Go to the right and talk to the shark twice, then help him out. (Hint: told ya a pocket knife is handy.)
Go to the left twice. Answer all the riddles (trust me, they're easy) and get the necklace.
Go back to the surface, then go to the moon. Get the hyperdrive from the shady guy. Use it to get Neil's money. Use that in turn to get a burger and drink.
Use the key on the lockbox and get its contents.
Find a way to give the necklace to the toilet lady. (Hint: don't lie.)
Back on earth, go find the nearsighted guy and give him the shark's tooth. Go back underwater and use the coupon to get the hotdog.
Visit the chief (not chef) and give him all the food items, plus the t-shirt. Check that all of the objectives except the "save the professor" one are completed, then talk to the chief and tell him you're done.
Umm. I've just encountered my first "native," the guard. He has brown skin, giant lips, dreadlocks, and is named Jamal. The second guy I've met, a hunter, has giant lips and an afro. He wants to eat me. They're both talking to me in hostile, stereotypically-broken English, with short sentences and misused verb forms.
Thusfar, I'm reminded of old Disney and Warner Brothers cartoons that are no longer broadcast--the ones with racist depictions of animalistic barbarian tribes of cannibals set in The Heart Of Blackest Africa, where Bugs Bunny or Donald Duck has to talk their way out of a stewpot.
I'm not saying that cartoonish caricatures of outlandish people can't be funny, but did the game creators need to go out of their way to channel so many racist stereotypes? Perhaps the game's character depictions will improve--as I said, I've only encountered two characters thusfar--but this game is making me cranky (and making me climb on an anti-racism soapbox on a casual gaming website, which is ridiculous from all angles).
Grinnyp, do we know anything about the creators or their intent? I remember the Mateusz Skutnik game from a while back with the unfortunately-depicted black chef, an honest mistake because Skutnik is Polish and wasn't aware of the character connotations to Americans. Is this a similar situation?
Scottique -
I doubt it's an intentional racial slur, but judging by the location, it's going to be a warm, tropical style place, and a lot of people indigenous to those sorts of area are going to be far from palid! I'm personally more outraged by the rudimentary use of colours on those aliens. :P
In more of a help sense, I'm stuck on
the submarine. How do I get it to appear? The near sighted cannibal is over on the far left of the island, just telling me about the 'fish' and I've spoken to the Prof about it and the option has gone from his conversation.
Scottique -
While I agree entirely, I wish you the best of luck getting any traction or understanding from commenters here on the subject. Ignorance backed up by self-righteous denial are the easy way to avoid having to challenge one's assumptions and world views; see tinderbox's response for instance...
Alright, I'm glad I included a "Perhaps the game's character depictions will improve" clause to my original post, because they did. After seeing the rest of the side-quest cast (and having a cup of coffee), the natives started to seem less ridiculous. I had a negative first impression, but by the time I finished it, I'd come to overlook the cannibals. Great game, overall. :-)
I did manage to get myself into a situation where it wasn't possible to 100% the game, though, in a way that wasn't obvious until I'd completed everything else. I had to go back to my save point and retrace my steps to eventually 100% it, which wasn't a big deal, but I'll give the warning now so that people can avoid the same mistake:
When you're in the Moonburger, it's possible to buy just a burger, no drink, and have 5 Lunars left. You need both the burger and the drink to 100% the game, but the clerk won't sell you just a drink or take the burger back, and I tried everything I could think of to get more Lunars. Unless I missed something, I'm fairly sure that if you just buy the burger, it renders the game non-100%-able.
I take it from the deafening silence that most people either didn't even notice that the cannibals were depicted differently (after all, they're all half-naked and have a unique skin tone compared to the
aliens, professor, Tony, & the squid-man,
so they're already pretty distinct), or simply don't see an "extra-wide mouth and squared teeth" as something on par with "blackface"?
While I'll say that their head and mouth shape is a little strange, I don't see it as intentionally offensive, given the general exaggerated aesthetic of the cartoon: they do not appear to have been drawn to look deliberately savage, inhuman, animalistic, or particularly ugly, relative to the other characters
very few of whom are human, non-cannibal, and have visible faces (i.e., Neil)
Besides, is drawing someone's mouth funny to indicate an ethnic difference any worse than outright describing them as self-confessed cannibals? If that much upsets your sensibilities, you probably can't handle the humor the author was obviously going for, before you even see any of the cannibals.
Julie,
I had the same problem..
Give the chief all the food but instead of talking to him. Try looking in the wannabe witchdoctor's box. Maybe his look isn't quite complete?
Unfortunately I did not save so I had to start over, so you may have to do the same. (Although it was much easier the second time through.)
Hello everybody,
I am the author of this game.
First of all I would like to thank Grinnyp for the great review and all of you for the positive feedback.
I saw the comment about the game being rascist and to be honest I was a bit shocked.
At first I thought it had to do with the natives speaking "broken" English, but apparently there's more to it.
I'm from the Netherlands and English is not my first language, however if I did anything to offend someone, I'm truly sorry as this was never my intention!
Regards,
Maikel
The author of the "racial" post politely apologized... And it was a bit far fetched from the beginning, imo...; the typical Caucasian would be, following that line of thought, lazy, fat and a DVD-watching couch potato, which I don't think is racist, just mild, cartoony comedy.
Good game, I liked the idea of nonobligatory point-and-click side missions a lot. On the other hand, some solutions to using an object weren't straight and obvious to me, like
giving sunglasses to the hunter. First, why would he need sunglasses in the middle of the night, second, "something cool" hint is a bit vague, I tried to give him ice, but to no anvil.
But that could be me just tired...
Hello Masterfool! Thank you for trying to address people's concerns here.
To start: you have made a lovely game, whimsical, clever, and fun. I do not for a second believe you or anyone in your team had any intention or knowledge of offending anyone else. But there are a few things I would like to try to explain.
Here in America, there are many people who are descended from slaves, slaves who were originally brought from Africa by Europeans. It has only been fifteen generations since they were fully freed from slavery, and have had to battle very long and very hard to be recognized as equals, which continues to this day. During the course of their (our) struggle, traditional caricatures of Africans (oversized lips, spears and bones, ignorance, etc.), often used to make fun of those of African descent, have become taboo in America. From my understanding, these caricatures are still in widespread use in much of Europe, especially where there are not significant populations of people of African descent. So there is some sensitivity involved whenever such a caricature appears here in America, whatever the intention. It is a complicated issue here with deep roots in our past.
I hope this explains things somewhat, and my apologies to the JIG community for any undue heaviness, but I felt that something had to be communicated.
-H.
I jumped back to the comments after encountering the first native, and am glad someone else had my reaction.
Given that the author is unaware of why such depiction might be offensive, I assume that this is inadvertent. Nevertheless, it's not okay, and the team (artist/designer/writer) needs to do some research into racism and depictions of race if they don't want it to happen again.
I'm not surprised most commenters don't get it, but that doesn't make it okay.
Masterfool
Thank you for taking the time to respond to concerns about the depictions in your game. As Hewitt said, images that show exaggerated facial features (especially large mouths or lips, and broad noses) and depictions of dark-skinned people as ignorant, stupid, or incapable of speaking English, all have very deep roots in the US and are very painful, especially to Black Americans. Also, the implication that Black people were 'heathens' who practice 'black magic' or 'witch doctoring' was used (and is still being used in some parts of the country) by many extremist right-wing Christians as another excuse for violence towards Black people.
For me they brought up very painful memories from my childhood, living a very white small town in Ohio, where there was overt and vicious racism all the time, and where similar-looking caricatures were found all over town.
Even though I know you did not mean any insult at all, I found the images distressing enough that I simply stopped playing.
That said, the parts of the game I did play were very fun with whimsical logic that I quite enjoyed. I look forward to the next game you produce!
-Mme Turb
Kay, finished the game. I appreciate the walkthrough but there were a few things that were unclear and got me confused. They were answered for me helpfully so I'm going to put them all in a neat little post. ^^
TIPS
Tony is the guy in the secret hideout. The waterproof marker is sitting on the right DVD stack.
You use the bucket of paint, the marker, and the skull that is attached to the second sign you see on the medicine man guy. You can get this skull by using the pocketknife on it.
To get the cookbook from the chef you need to talk to Neil the astronaut, who will ask you for the hyperdrive. Then you ask the shady alien for a hyperdrive, and he will ask for the cookbook, which will give you the option of asking the chef for it. That's the only way I know how to do it.
The beach is the place where you first step onto the island. After you talk to the nearsighted guy and say something like "Can you tell me more about this giant fish?" ask the professor about it. Then go to the beach and click the water. You'll say something. Go back to the nearsighted guy and click the new option.
The blue plant that's underwater is actually sort of purpleish. Check the top of it, where it says ‘hole'. The nearsighted guy has the coupon, but you'll need to give him the shark's tooth first.
The racism thing did cross my mind ... but the cartoons actually remind me of a tribe in Brazil (Yanomami?) and it is a good caricature of their general appearance. Yes, it's spoofish, but take a look at Tony!!! A perfect caricature of my lazy teenaged stepson (though he needs to have trash and dirty laundry strewn around, and dishes piled up in the sink).
I am loving the game!! It's taken me a couple of visits and I'm trying not to peek at the walkthrough unless I get really stuck. So far I've used two hints:
I forgot that the medicine man was waiting for another item to give me the telescope ... though I figured out which item by trial and error
and I'm now stuck trying to figure out
how to remove the shark's tooth.
Thanks GrinnyP!! Once again you've kept me entertained during my down-time.
Wondering why JIG would even endorse a game with perceptibly racist content that might be offensive to loyal players? You rarely lead us astray, JIG, but this is just plain negligent.
[Sorry, but I don't share your sentiment with this particular game. After all, we are here to report and review games, not censor or censure. To censor this game from possible discussion would be negligent, in my opinion. -Jay]
Thanks to the game creators for a very enjoyable game. Thanks also for your apologies for inadvertently depicting an indigenous culture in a way that could be interpreted as offensive.
As a marketing person, I know that multicultural sensitivity is a big issue. There have been hundreds of instances where messages were translated incorrectly and/or misinterpreted by the audience because of cultural misunderstandings. It might be a good idea to share your future concepts/characters with someone in the US, if that is your target market.
That being said, I've read lots of complaints on JIG about the difficulties with Japanese-English translation. I don't mind it - I'm very impressed that anyone outside of the UK and US can speak or write English at all!
Thanks again JIG and GrinnyP for sharing this. It took me way longer than the typical escape game, but it was a lot of fun.
I dont agree with the statement that games are not censored on this site. If that were 100% true explicitly violent and adult rated flash games would be rated and "discussed" here as well.
[We have some very violent and adult-oriented games on the site, and they are rated as such. They are few, but there are some. If a game is good (fun to play), innovative or important in some way, we will likely feature it and allow discussion about it regardless of how controversial the content within it is. About this game: I am pleased there has been discussion about the cannibal images, and I am pleased the developer showed up and read the comments posted here about them. I am confident we did the right thing. -Jay]
I had the same misgivings about the depictions in this game. It was not really the 'cannibal' thing that bothered me; cannibalism has occurred among many peoples all over the world, including Africa. Nor was it the broken English that was a problem; of course their English wouldn't be very good, they're not from an English-speaking country (in fact it's impressive they know any English at all, if you think about it). As others have said, it was the over-exaggerated lips and mouth that had me feeling uneasy. These people didn't look anything like the other people in the game, they looked like a different species!
All in all, it was stereotype after stereotype. However, it was not a new idea, it was a retread of a very old and thoroughly-used trope -- the cannibal tribe with the big cooking pot containing a hapless pith-helmeted explorer, who is somehow unharmed by the boiling liquid he's sitting in. Just as cliched as alien abduction. The game author was just using it is a plot device, nothing else. There was obviously no malice in it, and the game was pretty enjoyable.
I hope the game author will use this as an opportunity to learn more about racial sensitivity, especially when dealing with markets outside his own culture. And I hope he makes more games... maybe next time without overused cliches!
Personally I do not see the caricatures in this game as racist, at least not against African or African American people. Very little about their appearance reminds me of blackface or other offensive caricatures (such as the unfortunate one in the original Tortuga game). Some people are referring to wide noses, for example, but the natives here don't even have noses-- they just have big, toothy mouths-- which makes sense since they are being depicted as cannibals. At any rate, all of the characters in this game are far-fetched caricatures, and I thought the cannibal caricatures were no different than the nerdy professor or the fat, lazy white guy (or the aliens).
I really enjoyed this game and gave it 5 stars. However, I did fall into the trap of not being able to 100% complete the game due to the bug that scottique mentioned.
1) How do I get the telescope?
2)I really think all the people who find this thing racist, sexist, and so forth are taking it to far. It is just a game! The cannibals are just made that way so you can distinguish them as the cannibals. I'm black (or African American or what ever you politically correct die hards want to call me. It doesn't matter because in the end I'm not a skintone, I'm an American girl! A teen! A person! As soon as you take it so far with the naming is when you INVITE critism for racism and such.) and these did't strike me as racist what so ever. I mean, it doesn't even say that this is in Africa. Just some random "Skull Island" or something. Also, the "run like little girl" thing is an insult that is used in American culture in multiple forms of media. If you can't take it as a small joke, then you are taking this too seriously.
Please take a step back and take time to ask yourself, "What was the intent of this game? Am I TRULY offended or am I just looking for drama? If I am truly offended and things are changed to fit me, would the game be the same? If it is changed for me, is it for the better of everybody or my own selfish self?"
I know that in today's society everybody is always stepping lightly, but let's keep the game world just a game and keep politics away from it! After all, we let politics ruin everything else, so let's guard what we still have left.
I, for one, am glad that the racial images in this game were discussed here. Thanks, Masterfool, for showing cultural sensitivity in your comment - and I hope you'll continue to consider this issue as you go on making wonderful games!
Also, "It's just a game" (or likewise "It's just a book" or "it's just a movie") is a common response, but it doesn't do justice to the fact that all these works of media are rooted in a cultural context, and reflect a worldview that's worth thinking about. And sometimes, worth challenging.
One thing that I find interesting is that everyone is quick to start complaining about racist attitudes toward the natives, but no one said ANYTHING about the pasty professor in the safari outfit and the British accent (Ol' Chap) who thinks his life is worth more than yours and is insanely rich.
Also, the title is "Skull Island." That IMMEDIATELY suggests stereotypes. What kind of "Skull Island" would it be without primitive cannibals with a witch doctor?
Masterfool has said he was not trying to be racist. The only "racial profiling" he did intentionally was their use of broken English.
They are cannibals on a remote island. Why should they be expected to have perfect English?
Kiah also had a good point. She said she was African American and did not see the game as racism. What right do other races have to cry foul?
I enjoyed the game and thought the animations were cute. When I first saw that the cannibals had huge mouth filled with teeth, I thought "Ah! They will eat me!"
