Lakeview Cabin
It may LOOK like an "idyllic cottage weekend simulator", but this clever twist on a puzzle game is anything but. You'll have to figure out some way to survive the weekend using the limited tools around you, but beware... gruesomeness and red herrings abound.

The following spoilered text contains a description of some of the "disturbing content" found in the game and as such ruins the big twist. You should only click if you don't mind having that ruined for you, or if you're trying to figure out whether you want to be exposed to the game's more graphic content or not.
The game's "monster" is actually a sort of demon/zombie/creature that's a pregnant woman. She lopes towards you with her distended belly. To advance the game, you must figure out a way to kill her, and one of these ways includes violently chopping her to death with an axe. After she's killed, the demonic unborn creature she was carrying bursts out of her and you must figure out a way to kill that as well. Additionally, using the bench on the far right near the pier will cause your character to remove all his clothes.
argyblarg, it is indeed possible to
set things on fire. There may be more than one way, but the most direct path is to get the shotgun
throw something large at it to knock it off the wall
 and, after picking
up the shells in the same place you got the gas can,
shoot either the gas can or the beer bottles; quite a lot of fire will result. Obviously, the fire can burn you too.
Did anyone find a way to
kill the parasite/creature
besides the following, which I must admit I had to do some Googling to figure out:
throw it into the trap, or throw it into a lit fireplace?
Also, did anyone find uses for the
deer meat or chopped electrical wire
?
Got rid of the first demon
cut the wire to the generator with mower near the cabin by the right side of woods. Then fill bucket from that cabin by placing it in front of pump outside. Pick up bucket and when the demon woman arrives, throw the water on her as she passes over the electrical spark and she will go up in flames.
But then...
Can't get rid of demon baby - tried shooting it but no good.
So I have figured out a few things
if you cut the wire and throw the water on the wire it electrocutes her
to get the gun
throw the log inside the room
to get the key so you can access the ammo
chop a piece of wood inside the toilet
to get the bees
chop a piece of wood below them
General hints
you can electrocute her, shoot her then hack her to death with the ax.
I can not figure out how to kill the demon that comes out of her. I have tried to get it to eat the deer, electrocute it, shoot it, throw it in the water (it disappears and comes back when you enter a room).. any ideas?
laughingmonkey and Marc not sure how many ways there are to
kill the demon, but the following work:
Pick it up you can pick it up like anything else, it just wriggles out of your grasp every so often and throw it into a set bear trap. If it just runs over the trap, it'll be fine, but if you THROW it in, it'll die.
Light one of the stoves in the cabin by dropping chopped wood into them; you can throw the demon into the stove and it'll die. The stoves only stay lit for a short time, though; I'd kill the woman, light the stove, then run back to get the demon and chuck it in.
I saw the game designer also imply that there's a way that involves
the lawnmower, but can't figure out how.
silent george
Carry in a big log and drop it to the left of the outhouse. Go back out, get the axe, come in and chop the log the resulting wood will fly up and knock down the key. (You'll need to carry the axe and wood out before you can pick up the key; once you do, it'll vanish and the door will be open.)
jkballes
You just have to keep doing it, sometimes pausing in between. Stand at the back of the mower and press X again and again. I usually get it on with three quick presses, pause, another one, pause, and then the next should fire it up.
Lakeview Cabin Strategy Guide
Note: Part of the coolness of Lakeview Cabin is how items can combine in inventive ways. Of course, that makes it likely that I've not sussed out a particular solution. If I've missed something, leave a comment and I will update the guide.
Gathering Supplies
-
Pick up the block of wood and bring it into the outhouse. Leave the outhouse and pick up the axe. Enter the outhouse, and use the axe to split the wood. One of the pieces will fly up and knock the key down. You only need to pick up the key to unlock the cabin. This key unlocks the left cabin, containing the gas can, the shells (which are just added to your inventory, not carried), and another bottle of beer.
-
Another key can be found buriend in the ground, just to the left of where the deer spawns. There will be a little lump you can see. Hit it several times with your axe, or run it over 2-3 times with the lawnmower to uncover it. As before it unlocks the left cabin.
-
Inside the left cabin is a box. Use the axe on the box, or throw one of the and you will find a pair of binoculars. This binoculars can be used to look far to the left and right, very helpful once the The Woman shows up.
-
On the left cabin is a bear trap. Walk by it with a bucket or full log in your hand and you will dislodge it. Be careful: when it's open, walking over it will injure you. Throwing at item on it will set it off, allowing you to pick it up and set it at another locations by throwing it with [X].
-
Inside the center cabin is a shotgun. You can get it off the wall by throwing a full log of wood at it, or by chopping the log with the axe inside the house. The shotgun is only useful with the shells you find inside the left cabin, once you unlock it.
-
Notice the Franklin Stoves in the center and right cabin. If you put a chopped log inside it, the fire inside will be lit. It will go out after a while.
-
The generator by the right cabin can have its cord cut with the axe.
-
Inside the right cabin is a bucket. You can take it outside the cabin and fill it with the pump.
-
The lawn mower can be turned on by standing near its rear, and pressing and holding [X] several times, as if you are pulling a cord. It can be ridden. It will run out of gas quickly though, even if not ridden, and will be disabled if it runs into a log.
Killing The Woman
-
There are several different ways to kill The Woman. Though she will come automatically with darkness, she can be spawned at any time with [o] (as in "octopus). Most ways will require you setting things up ahead of time.
-
Method 1: Place the set-up bear trap in a place where The Woman will walk over it. This will disable her long enough for you to finish her with the axe. Be quick, though. She will get back up.
-
Method 2: Get both the shotgun and the shells. Fire the shotgun at the woman with [X]. This will disable her long enough for you to finish her with the axe. Be quick, though. She will get back up.
-
Method 3: Place either the beer bottles or the gas can in the path of the woman. Fire the shotgun at them and they will explode, disabling her long enough to finish her with the axes. And yes, she can get up again. The gas can makes a bigger boom than the beer bottles, but flames hurt you too. You might want to keep a bucket of water nearby to douse the flames in your path, and if you get tagged by a spark, jumping in the water is a good idea.
-
Method 4: Cut the cord of the generator. When The Woman comes up on it, chuck the bucket of water at it electrocuting her.
Killing The Child
-
Once you have killed The Woman, The Child will come out. The Child can be picked up and thrown with [Z], which can buy you some important seconds.
-
Method 1: Once the child spawns, head into either the central or right cabin. Get a fire in the stove going with a chopped log, pick up The Child and put them in the stove.
-
Method 2: Start up the lawnmower and run The Child over with it. This will require perfect timing, as it will require you to get that engine running before it gets to you.
-
Method 3: Activate the bear trap. Pick up The Child and throw them into the bear trap. The bear trap will not activate if they just run over it. This will require perfect aim.
Random Red Herrings And Extra Bits
-
Inside the left cabine is a box. Chucking a full log at it, or using the axe on it, will reveal a flashlight. It has little use beyond making things easier to see in the dark. And you might not want to be looking
-
Using the binoculars, you can gaze out from the left dock and see the scene from the title screen. Was The Woman's death an accident? Or not? She does drag you back there after she finishes you off. Of course, you can also use them to gaze out from the right dock and perv on pixelated teenagers. If that's your thing.
-
You can use the bear trap to wound the deer. And finish him off with the axe or shotgun. Then cook the meat in a stove.
-
The outhouse can, of course, be used for its intended purpose.
-
Hitting [X] by the bench at the right cabin will have you remove your clothes. Drinking a beer will have you randomly vomiting and mess with your sense of direction. Chopping a block of wood by the bee hive will cause the bees to attack you until you jump in the water. Drunk, naked, and attacked by bees is no way to go through life, son.
-
The building on the left is actually a sauna, which explains why you remove your clothes outside it. Build a fire in it, then chuck the bucket of water at it, and you'll get a nice steam room, where you can sit and chill on the bench.
-
Put four chopped logs in either of the stoves, and you will set the building they're in on fire. And probably yourself, too.
At the cabin on the right you can
put wood in the stove to make a fire, then throw the bucket full of water on the coals.
I had to throw from the left side of the room to make the bucket hit the coals.
The room will fill with steam. Then if you hit x by the bench outside you will get naked and hit x on the bench on the inside to chill in the sauna. As far as I know nothing happens after that.
Just a wonderful game all around. Glad I didn't expect much from the beginning and just try to chill until the second night.
As for the deer:
You can cook the meat at the stove beside your bed. And then eat them.
Also there's an alternative way to obtain the first important item:
There's a small "bump" on the ground between the lawnmower and the deer. Either drive the lawnmower twice/thrice over that bump, or just grab the axe to chop 5~6 times, and you can get another copy of the golden key.
Also in the end I have no luck
to kill the child with the lawnmower. I guess he just jumps a lot and dodged successfully. That's one lively fetus.
Dora:
I appreciate your consideration, and to be fair you did indeed give fair warning by specifying that the guy got naked. In video games, there's naked and then there's naked. It can be done in anything from a G rating (you know they're naked but their hidden from neck down by scenery) to X rating (this game probably). I always appreciate detail in this area. Thanks
Also, you can
shoot the teenagers on the far left..
and I also found a bug, by
sitting naked on the bathroom and summoning her. She breaks into the door and throws the character to the side, then he falls off the bottom of the screen, and can then move freely around the scenery. If you keep going left, you'll see all the insides and eventually get back to the far right of the lake.
RAGE QUIT!
I can't get the gun no matter how hard I try. I managed to kill the monster lady by throwing the pail of water on her when she's right on the power lines and then chopping her to mush with the axe. But some little alien face-hugger/possessed liver pops out and tries to get me! It jumps OVER the bear trap the ONE time the trap doesn't fall on top of ME. I throw it into the lake, but then when I went into the outhouse, the little demon-turd breaks the door down and kills me!
As far as I can tell, there's no real story behind the woman and the child. That kind of disappoints me. This is what I was able to find out
In the middle cabin, you can see a picture of the guy and the woman above the bed. When I walked into the cabin at the first sign of dusk, a phantom of the woman was hovering over the bed and beckoning me to it. She disappeared soon after.
As far as I can tell, the woman was your wife or lover... and the child is your son. I would've liked to know a bit more than that. How did the woman die? Why / how did she come back from the dead?
I always thought there was a pretty clear story based on the circumstances and what you can infer from your surroundings and what you see. :)
As you say, the woman was probably his wife, and the baby his child. But consider the way it's all presented. Despite the fact that it's clear they spent a lot of time there (the photo, the vision of her lying on the bed), the place is in a shambles, so he clearly hasn't been back in a long time, and the main thing he has with him now is alcohol. If you go into one of the areas at a certain time, you hear a baby crying. Because the monster is pregnant when it attacks you, I always assumed that his wife died during childbirth, perhaps even while on vacation at that very cabin, and the baby (because it is only represented as a fetus) died as well. This whole thing is about him coping with the guilt and grief surrounding it in a very Stephen King like fashion.
I actually thought it was a great example of storytelling without words!
The obvious storyline to infer from the events in the game is much darker than that, I think.
It seems clear to me that the player character murdered his wife and unborn child just prior to start of the game. For one, the title screen shows a small patch of bubbles in the middle of a lake. The wife comes from the lake, so we would assume that the bubbles in the title screen are her dying breaths, probably chained and dumped overboard some small rowboat we never see (maybe he destroyed the evidence).
Also the very fact that she's coming to murder him in the first place suggests some kind of heinous wrongdoing on his part, I doubt she and her baby would be so vindictive in the afterlife over her dying during childbirth, as if that's his fault. Besides, if she died during childbirth, she wouldn't still be pregnant when she comes out of the water.
Consider the hazy, directionless way in which you can spend your day, especially on the first play through. Take a naked sauna, mess with bees, drunkenly ram around on a lawnmower. This guy is in a daze, he just killed his wife and kid and the gravity of that situation is setting in (visions of her in bed). Not to mention he can't sleep at night.
He just lies there, blinking….
esque c'est normal?
