Ethan Haas Was Right
A new puzzle game with a distinct ARG smell recently popped on the scene without much known about what it is or who is behind it. Ethan Haas Was Right is a mysterious Flash-based website that presents a series of 5 unique puzzles, some original and some rehashed versions of classic puzzle games. Even if you don't care for alternate reality games in general, there's enough here for a few sessions of casual gameplay.

Finished puzzle five...
There are 26 glyphs visible when you mouse over the star on the far right...
It's the alphabet. Use it to decrypt the letter sequences appearing on the upper half of the sphere.
.FIVE. .BNSN.
.FOUR. .EITD.
.THREE. .ENIE.
.ONE. .HIGE.
.TWO. .TGNH.
Forget the numbers. This leaves the following text: ENIE EITD BNSN HIGE TGNH - what to do?
It's an anagram. Listen to the last cut scene (which you can replay by clicking the next to last star on the right). Does anything he says seem to fit?
THE BEGINNING OF THE END
Convert that back into the glyphs and enter it on the lower half of the sphere (no spaces).
Now you just have to wait until August...
Rumor has it that this game is somehow linked to JJ Abrams newest movie.
You can see the preview in theaters if you go to see the new Transformers movie. It's the one where it's some guy with a camcorder taping a party, when all of a sudden there's a massive explosion in the distance.
However the release date for the movie is some time in '08. I am VERY interested.
CyberTractor:
You're on the right track...
Re-read hint 2 in the hint email (shown in Jay's description above).
You need to spell out a word using the glyphs.
The word should be entered by rotating the two vertical wheels to show the first two letters, then turning the horizontal wheel to show the last two.
For those having trouble with the alphabet,
here's a quick reference card that includes all the Roman letters, not just A and Z
(derived from a screenshot of the game).
forget my previous post! got it!
and i found out what this is for, by the way.
seems to be for a movie named cloverfield. so if any of you care to know more, you should have a look at this.
from the 'source'...
...war came, no longer from the elemental nor from the star's rain of fire. The world was again remade, and the glow was as the coming of the sun upon the Earth. The children of the gods were again too few, scattered and divided and among them walked the ancients and those whose thoughts were not as to the towers and the marvels, but to the End and the destruction of the Earth and to the fires from which nothing could escape.
For puzzle 4, there is another page that you can view to get hints that contains additional information from the email:
http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com/helpme/
Do a Ctrl+A to highlight the entire page to see the secret instructions
I don't know if this is directly related to the game/movie/whatever or just somebody fooling around but someone started up a blog that seems to expound a bit on the mythos:
As a side note, if you open the game without having the flash player installed, or running NoScript like myself, the following text is displayed:
...war came, no longer from the elemental nor from the star's rain of fire.

Complete Walkthrough:
Puzzle 1
-
As the hint email says, this is a memory game.
-
When you click on any button, the game pops out each button in a sequence.
-
The sequence is invariant.
-
There's a reason for that.
-
Ever play the game "Simon"?
-
This is similar. You have to push all the same buttons in the same order. If you press some other button, or get one out of sequence, it shows you the correct sequence again.
Puzzle 2
Incidentally, you can right-click to zoom in and out, which is really handy for being able to make out the letters in this puzzle.
-
You need to enter some text.
-
The game has its own alphabet; roll over one of the stars to make an alphabet key appear. (Or use my easier-to-use version.)
-
You need to enter a specific word.
-
The word you need to enter is four letters long.
-
Get your mind out of the gutter. This is a kid-safe game!
-
See any four-letter words in plain sight?
-
The word you need to enter is "HAAS".
-
Obvious problem: That's four letters, and you seem to only have two characters to work with.
-
What's two plus two?
-
Rotate the two inner rings such that they spell "HA", then find "AS" on the outer ring.
Puzzle 3
-
This one's a classic game.
-
It's a simple capture game.
-
See those two lights at the bottom that aren't lit?
-
Specifically, this is the game of Pegged.
-
You need to capture all of the pegs except one.
You capture a peg (= light) by dragging another peg over it to an empty space. This removes the captured peg from the board (extinguishes the light). You can't move a peg without capturing another peg. If you have more than one peg still on the board and no possible moves (e.g., two pegs separated by an empty space), the puzzle resets.
Puzzle 4
-
First, I'll point out that this game is controlled with the arrow keys. You may not need any more hints to figure this puzzle out, now that you know how to operate it.
-
This is a programming game. (Don't worry, you don't need to learn a programming language.)
-
How many gear-shaped things are there (counting the one that the blue circle is sitting on top of)?
-
How many green circles are there?
-
You need to program in a course that results in all three green circles (which I think of as vacuum-cleaner robots) ending up on the three gear-shaped platforms.
-
Ah, but the robots don't seem to go the same direction you tell them to. They go every which way.
-
More precisely, the blue one goes in the direction you tell it to, but the green ones go in different directions. Also, if the blue robot is blocked, your move is rejected out-of-hand, but if it isn't, the move is allowed, even if one or more of the green robots is blocked. And as you may imagine, robots can block other robots.
-
Also, the squares above the top two platforms are blocks; the robots can't pass through them.
-
WARNING: The next hint gives one solution. Thanks, Labyrinth.

Clue in the video before Puzzle 5
This flashes for just a fraction of a second during the cutscene video. Just in case you missed it (maybe you weren't looking at the screen during the movie), here it is:
54312
Puzzle 5
Zooming helps with this one, too.
-
This is not a crypto puzzle.
-
At least, not in the sense of having to decrypt something that's encrypted. You do have to work out a password, though.
-
Have you figured out the significance of that one screen with no letters on it?
-
It's a separator.
-
It's a separator in the telegraphic sense. You know, like the word "stop": "Hello stop we are doing well stop the weather here is good stop unfortunately there is no punctuation stop …"
-
You need to figure out the message.
-
Start by counting letters everywhere they appear.
-
This means the rotating messages as well as the letter-board underneath.
-
There are 20 spaces on the letter-board (hopefully, you didn't need me to tell you that part). The number of letters in each message varies on the first line but is always four on the second line.
-
The messages are not random.
-
Have you written them all down yet? (Not that you need to; they're in the next hint.)
-
-
FIVE (new line) BNSN
-
FOUR (new line) EITD
-
THREE (new line) ENIE
-
ONE (new line) HIGE
-
TWO (new line) TGNH
-
-
Note that the order is important.
-
No, it's not 12345. That would be too easy.
-
Remember the clue from the most recent cutscene?
-
No? That's OK, it was only on the screen for a brief flash. It said 54312.
-
The messages appear in that order: "FIVE BNSN", then "FOUR EITD", then "THREE ENIE", then "ONE HIGE", then "TWO TGNH".
-
The significance of this is that the numbers aren't part of the message. They're just sequence information.
-
It's also important that every message's second line is four letters.
-
What do you get when you multiply 4, the length of every clue, by various numbers?
-
Like, say, the number of clues?
-
You have five clues, and they're four letters each; 4 - 5 = 20, which is the length of the letter-board.
-
Except that the letter-board isn't a single line; it's a rectangle, 10 - 2.
-
What if it were a 4 - 5 rectangle instead?
-
It'd look something like this:
-
BNSN
-
EITD
-
ENIE
-
HIGE
-
TGNH
-
-
Unfortunately, that arrangement doesn't help you much.
-
Try playing with the order. (Next hint shows the correct order.)
-
-
TGNH
-
HIGE
-
ENIE
-
BNSN
-
EITD
-
-
Columns are rows and rows are columns.
-
-
THEBE
-
GINNI
-
NGIST
-
HEEND
-
-
Still haven't figured it out? The next hint gives it away.
-
"THE BEGINNING IS THE END".
Thanks to Labyrinth (10:40) and Kevin (6:46) for their hints, with which I was able to finish the game and this walkthrough.
I hopped on over to IMDb after I beat this to see if I could find out anymore about this movie. It's listed as Untitled JJ Abrams Project (2008). There isn't much official info at all, not even 1 actor or even the director listed. Coverfield is a fake working title. There are a lot of people participating in the message boards. They hadn't heard of this game or that blog so I turned them onto that. If you want to see the teaser trailer there is the link. It's cell phone camera footage but that's all there is. From what I heard Paramount is RELENTLESSLY getting every video of the trailer that gets put up on YouTube taken down. It looks like they are trying to keep it mysterious and get the word of mouth marketing going. Anyway, fun game! Can't wait till August 1st!!
hey gregory
here is website that has some info on the trailer you mentioned http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/
Just a comment on the connections to the game:
I don't think the Ethan Haas character from the TV comedy "The Class" has any connection to the puzzle or the coming film.
I think the name is just a coincidence.
I mean, if you watch the game's videos and the film's trailer, I don't think you can really place an NBC sitcom in there... really.
More info on the game: It looks like the blog
http://ethanhaaswaswrong.blogspot.com/ IS part of this game/world. I emailed [email protected] and asked him about it..I didn't expect to get an answer but I did:
"Stephen,
It's not a person, it's a group, a very ancient sect. These are dangerous "people", be
careful trying to dig too deep....
I've never seen them myself, I'm not sure anyone has, for a very long time.....
This is getting very interesting. It feels a lot like something Lovecraft would write. Does anyone here speak Hindi or read Sanskrit? There is some sort of cryptic message up at the blog that might be part of the solution to all this.
I agree Stephen, that was my impression when taking a glance at the couple of posts at that new blog. I immediately thought of the "balance of power" that Van spoke up in the first email message (noted above in the review).
It might be interesting to note
that I, too, received a bit of a personal reply when at first I emailed asking about the site. In the message I mentioned: "I hope the site leads to something rewarding for the casual player." To which he replied:
"Jay, I hope the site leads to enlightenment for all of us."
That gave me chills, quite honestly. Very cool indeed.
We have a discussion going here at IMDb too looking for clues and debating whether this has anything to do with that movie.
B Brain: For puzzle 3:
There are two empty spaces (unlit lights) at the bottom.
The idea is to capture all the pegs (lights) on the board (except for the last peg, of course, since you've nothing to capture it with at that point).
You capture a peg by jumping over it with another peg.
You can only move a peg exactly two spaces, and only if you would capture a peg by doing so. This means that you can't move a peg exactly one space, nor three or more spaces, and that you can't move a peg by two spaces if there's no peg in between that you would capture.
Take this with a grain of salt because I cannot confirm but someone on the IMDb board just said all 5 videos from the game were posted on YouTube and were all removed at the request of Paramount Pictures, the distributor of the JJ Abrams film. I will try and confirm but if true that will end debate as to whether this is in fact viral marketing for the teaser trailer shown before Transformers.
In the second video, Van refers to "The Slimes," and how they (plural) have been showing themselves for years, but have not been stopped by those in power. The J.J. Abrams movie features a singular creature called The Parasite, who judging by the effects shots and noises would be very difficult to hide on Earth for multiple years if anybody, of any social rank, knew anything about it.
Sorry to bust up everybody's hopes/dreams, but this site has absolutely nothing to do with 1-18-08.
Anybody see this?
...war came, no longer from the elemental nor from the star's rain of fire.
I simply cannot get Puzzle 3. I've tried everything and understand the concept, but what I don't understand is whenever I move a light somewhere, that is over a "peg" (that being where a light may have been or is), it doesn't do anything but return to where it was. I can't move forward with the puzzle because I cannot place any lights anywhere...could the flash be messed up or not loading completely?
Very frustrating, how do I move these lights and extinguish them?
heath - try just reloading the browser window. The game saves your place, so it should bring you back to the beginning of whatever level you were on.
David - if nothing happened, then I think you may have done it wrong. Follow my suggestion above: reload the browser window and try again. Remember when following the walkthrough for puzzle 4, you need to press each direction TWICE in succession.
hey jay, i've just gotten a second auto e-mail from this game!
You're taking a big risk contacting me but I understand why you are, I would rather face
the future with my eyes open than closed.
View the source to see past the puzzles and tricks, there are answers beneath
If the puzzles I've left you are too tricky trust HAAS for the second key, it will
unlock the door to more answers.
I'll be at this address for as long as I can, I hope I hear from you again.
good luck to all of us............

make the bottom set of symbols spell out thebeginningistheend and the ball will open or whatever right away. if its not, check your symbols again. i had 2 of them wrong the first time. the flashing symbols on the top dont seem to have any significance as far as i could tell... hope that helped.

For the most part, checking the registar will get rid of the fake sites. Too bad these are just web companies and something with more clues. Haven't checked all the other sites yet.
Hey hey, check this out. After looking through that comment from jay I took those numbers and letters at the end and stuck them into a url.
But I'm very bad at reading cursive, I can barely make out what it says on that paper. I know that at the end it says "The Beginning and The End." A reoccurrence of the Alpha and Omega theme.
[Edit: the quotes were missing in your HTML, I've fixed them now. =) -Jay]
Yeah this is all crazy stuff i just happened upon the ethan haas stuff while researching the 01-18-08 movie. I definately dont think they are linked, but anyways.....i cant read the cursive posted from the 2 weird sites can anyone put the text down here? And also im saddened to see the haaswasright site hasnt changed or any hidden links can be found. Keep the info coming folks. I will try to see what i can dig up as well
It seem that CKROX is a web designer, i found this other site:
http://www.returntosenderthemovie.com/rtsflash.html
(it's about a short film called "Return To Sender" -2005-)
... maybe he works for the Red Interactive Agency (the one who designed the site of ethanhaasright.com) and put his nick back on the DIVINUS tablet
so
three letters each have titles
http://417stjneh.com/ 1
www.6ld9102.com 2
www.279fh7691.com 3
The first one Schedar mean Alpha
The second Caph is Beta
The third Gamma Cass is Gamma
each letter corrispondes with a star in the cassioperia constellation
Know in the letter can says :
know the stars of Cassiopeia and you will know when you've reached your
destination.
so i Know the stars does this mean i have found the destination the end
but there is nothing more then letter that go no where
??
I dont know how to start the puzzles. All i see is a circuler object with blue spheres around it. so i dont know anything about the game. did the puzzles include these words "Look to the stars for help","...war came, no longer from the elemental nor from the star's rain of fire. The world was again remade, and the glow was as the coming of the sun upon the Earth. The children of the gods were again too few, scattered and divided and among them walked the ancients and those whose thoughts were not as to the towers and the marvels, but to the End and the destruction of the Earth and to the fires from which nothing could escape". i found these words by viewing hte websites source(view source)
What was promised to happen has happend...the revelation has come. Those who are ready will see and follow the path before them into the new world. Those who do see or refuse to see will be left behind. Do you have the courage to learn the truth? Behold the coming of truth! http://www.alphaomegathegame.com/
It's some kind of new RPG either table top or online or both called Alpha Omega. It takes place in the future after the planet has been trashed people and animals have mutated and aliens are making war with each other on earth and people get involved. We used to worship them as Gods and Devils but because we've grown and evolved we now see they are just aliens. It looks like an interesting game but as the site just launched there aren't really any good examples of character creation, game play etc.
yea seems that the alphaomega site is some online rpg. at the moment nothing is up, i try to create character and i get no response from the server. im assuming that at this time they just want us to know that the site is based on an online game that will be made available soon...
gg. i was hoping that it be related to the movie...utter dissappointment
Hey folks, just wanted to give you guys something neat. If you stay on the 1-18-08.com website for awhile, you'll hear this HUGE LOUD monster noise. From the Cloverfield Trailers, except more detailed and drawn out.
Also, the monster is obviously Cthulu, if you go to the Slusho website, you'll see it's only a subsidiary of TAGRUATO CORP. which is a powerful Japanese mining company, which mines... some new resource that only comes from the deepest parts of the ocean.
"Tagruato explores the final frontier on planet earth -- the deepest recesses of our oceans. Our scientists and engineers have created drilling technology that can withstand degrees of extreme pressure, cold, and heat never before thought possible."
You can check the map that displays all of it's Mining Operations all over the world, it's workstaff and when it was made, the newest Drill was just opened September 2007, a few hundred miles off the coast of New York.
1. just so everyone knows the spoiler pattern for the 4th puzzle given on this page, and many others out there, does not work. try it. you tell me if you get that sequence to work...
You have to tap everything twice, unless it's two directions in a row; tap the first one twice then just press the other one.
thought this was interesting. btw i came here as a result of trying to figure out the 4th puzzle and got caught up in all the hype. the link tells the story of cassiopeia. the interesting part is the seas monster parts. i know the ethan/1-18-08 connection has been shot down but could there still be a connection?
Another hint: in the same "investor news", another article sais something about a complain to another article from a "ravaille research center" that mentions slusho!. when i googled ravaille, the first page is that of scienceforums.net, and someone posted:
Hi! I'm new to the boards. You all seem very well read so I hope someone nows what I'm talking about.
I'm attaching a article I found about the Slusho! drinks and the weird affect it's having on people. I'm worried because my 2 boys drink it everyday.
Does anyone have info on the Ravaille Research Center? Are they legitimate? Does anyone have any other research on Slusho! drinks?
It's a viral attack from official cloverfield, or just a fan helping to spread tha virus?
The unfiction forum sais something about "the cause" and "ravaille...", and some jamie and teddy. Looking up in the ethanhaas.org/cloverfield page, i found the post of the article or memo that Ravaille wrote about slusho!. The web page thanked unfiction for the translation. The cherry on the top: the cast of heroes posing with slusho! for the pictures. What's going on here? This is getting SO viral!
so it seems that jamie and teddy are jamie lascano and his friend teddy. The weird thing is that, apparently, the characters of the movie have sites in myspace, with friends and everything.
Still dont know what the people on unfiction were talking abouth with "the cause".
Other pages are saying the "ethan haas/cloverfield diaries is a fake page". well, they sure dont clame to be "real" in the sense of "slusho.jp".
ok, my last post until someone sais something. apparently (i cant confirm this, because im just downloading the videos from the jamie and teddy web page), the "cause" is part of the conversation that teedy wants to have with jamie about his work; this can be a fake clue, whatsoever, 'cause the guys at unfiction created website called "the effect", that proclaims be fighting against tagruato corp, in a way of participating in this mass phenomenon. son, tha "cause" can be an extension to their game, or a real hint extracted from the videos. seeing is believing. i hope there could be real answers soon, especially indentifying the fake webs from the real ones.
Hey guys. Im a Paramount rep. I wont say where. Dont get your hopes up yet because i have nothing to do with the making of the movie or anything. I set up and host all the pre-screenings for paramount movies in my area. Really im on the bottum of the ladder but I have heard some things from reliable sources... and ill share some things with you guys abot my own experiences.
While showing transformers to a test audience long before it came out is when i first saw the teaser - still nameless. My first thought was Godzilla, Independence Day, or AVP2. I called my boss and inquired. He had no idea what it was.
However word leaked down to me and i finally found out. Now the movie comes out in 1 month and i'll be watching it in about 3 weeks with test audiences. when i see it ill report back with a spoiler, and dont read it if you can wait another 2 or 3 weeks, but itll be here.
Well, i want to tell you guys so bad but im going to leave it at this. heres my own little riddle - put it together.
Spiderman, The matrix, SAW... whats in common?
(relating to releases)
When did the teaser first appear? (absolute first)
Japaneese Cartoons.
Japaneese Toy.
" ITS HUGE - ITS ALIVE! "
optimal111mus2.
What type of preview has never been shown before a movie.
and lastly the words of haas:
"today we
remember the
ancestors that
died
never were
spawned, born
frail yet
uncannily
outspoken and
rude.
may never,
ever be
suddenly
remembered in
splendor...
Today
we reach
out to them
and prove
their deaths
were not
in vain. The first character
that those set aside
and skip will find the answer.
That is the omega. "
This proves to me that ethan haas knows the secret. its so simple to solve the last one that its hard. Just look at it.
I don't know if this is true but I remeber finding this link on a website for a rable top rpg called Alpha and Omega. This game is apparently the back story for that game.

It's also important that every message's second line is four letters.
What do you get when you multiply 4, the length of every clue, by various numbers?
Like, say, the number of clues?
You have five clues, and they're four letters each; 4 - 5 = 20, which is the length of the letter-board.
Except that the letter-board isn't a single line; it's a rectangle, 10 - 2.
What if it were a 4 - 5 rectangle instead?
It'd look something like this:
BNSN
EITD
ENIE
HIGE
TGNH
Unfortunately, that arrangement doesn't help you much.
Try playing with the order. (Next hint shows the correct order.)
TGNH
HIGE
ENIE
BNSN
EITD
Columns are rows and rows are columns.
THEBE
GINNI
NGIST
HEEND
Still haven't figured it out? The next hint gives it away.
"THE BEGINNING IS THE END".
Thanks to Labyrinth (10:40) and Kevin (6:46) for their hints, with which I was able to finish the game and this walkthrough.
