A rather unusual escape game that allows the player to temporarily detach from in-the-box thinking; in order to escape you must find and follow a new sort of logic, one that is strange yet intuitive. That quality, along with the game's simple and colorful appearance, made me feel like a little kid. When I finally finished I had a huge, silly grin on my face.

Narrative Walkthrough for Crazy Doors of Rainbow Colours

Beginning

  • I started in a heptagonal room with bare white walls. Turning to face southwest, I found three items: some purple flowers, the vase of water containing the flowers, and a light blue key.

  • I threw the water at the bare wall in front of me. Behold, the outline of a bird appeared with a keyhole in it. I used the key to open the door. Behind the door I found two items: a bucket of green paint, and an orange sun, a removable part of the scene.

  • I made a mental note to remember in which order I opened the doors, as I had a hunch it might be useful later.

The Green Door

  • Turning to face south, I threw the green paint at the white wall. A snake appeared, holding an item: a green key. I took the green key and turned it in the keyhole.

  • A green door appeared. Behind it I found two items: some red tomatoes, and a branch from one of the trees.

The Red Door

  • Leaving the door open, I turned to face north by northeast, and threw a tomato at the wall. A dog appeared, but there was no keyhole (and indeed I had no key for one).

  • Was the dog wearing a string of pearls? I threw the tomatoes at the pearls one by one until 6 of them turned red. Suddenly a red door appeared.

  • Behind the door I found three items: a bucket of orange paint, an orange key behind the tram (which I dragged to one side) and an indigo key in Santa's sack (from the man on the roof).

The Orange Door

  • Turning to face east by northeast, I threw the orange paint at the wall. A fish appeared, but the orange key did nothing at first.

  • I noticed that the fish's eye looked like the orange sun from the light blue door. Lo and behold, the sun fitted into a slot in the fish. I used the key again, and an orange door appeared.

  • Behind the door I found three items: a bucket of yellow paint, a yellow star, and a yellow key (which the fisherman had caught).

The Yellow Door

  • Turning to face southeast, I threw the yellow paint at the wall. A bat appeared, but two parts were missing. I filled in the star-shaped spot with my yellow star, but I needed something else on the right.

  • I returned to each door I had already opened looking for anything to fill the space. Behind the green door I found that one of the trees had yellowed. I found a yellow leaf in it. I returned to the yellow bat. I used the leaf on the door and opened it with the key.

  • Behind the door I found one item: a bucket of indigo paint.

The Indigo Door

  • Turning to face west by northwest, I threw the indigo paint at the wall. A whale appeared. I used the indigo key from the red door scene to reveal the door.

  • Behind the door I found one item: a bucket of violet paint. I also noted the numbers on the boat: a red 1 and a violet 7.

The Violet Door

  • Turning to face north by northwest, I threw the violet paint at the wall. A butterfly appeared with a keypad and keyhole in it.

  • I deduced that the keypad was somehow connected to the 7 doors. I further deduced that each door was represented by a number: 1 represented the red door, 7 the violet door, and the remaining numbers the doors in between, in the order Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet.

  • Fortunately I kept a record of the order in which I had discovered each door. The (light) blue door was opened first, so the first number of the code must be 5 - the number representing light blue. It seemed counter-intuitive, but it worked.

  • The full code turned out to be 5412367. When I entered it the lock clicked. But I was missing a violet key.

  • Returning to the other doors, I found a fire had broken out behind the yellow door. Before it could be put out, I used it to light the tree branch I had found behind the green door.

  • I used the lit branch to melt the snowman behind the red door. I took the violet key inside it and revealed the violet door.

  • Behind the door I found one item: a black key. I also noted an airship with the message: Go to 8. But I was not ready to do that yet!

At 8

  • I returned to the fisherman behind the orange door and discovered that he had caught something new: a magenta octopus.

  • I returned to the violet door and found that I could move to the middle of the room. Still trapped, frustration set in, and I took the octopus and squashed it all over the floor here, revealing a black door. I used the key to open it.

  • Behind the door there was a little multicoloured person standing in front of a planet. He seemed angry, so I gave him the purple flowers, which made him change colour to white.

  • I was then able to move the planet. Behind it I found a white key.

The White Door

  • I looked up at the ceiling. There was a white door here, behind 9 latches that I needed to unlock.

  • I opened the first latch with the white key, but on trying the door several times it was still locked. However, a white key appeared at the doorknob. I used it to unlock another latch, but nothing new happened.

  • I decided I had better check all the other doors for more white keys.

  • I found a white key in each of these locations:

    • Red door: Santa's sack

    • Orange door: Fisherman's catch

    • Yellow door: behind some grey rocks

    • Green door: in a tree that had turned red

    • Blue door: on a cloud

    • Indigo door: behind the boat, on a whale's waterspout

    • Violet door: I had to unlock the airship by turning the 8 on it, then move it aside

  • I returned to the white door, unlocked the remaining latches, and at last escaped!!

Help anyone?

I did almost all of it, I think. I'm at the

butterfly (last?)

door, and I can't figure out the code!

I am completely lost. I have three things:

Flowers, Key and Vase with Water

And cannot find any way to use them. I have resorted to random clicking and that loses its charm really fast.

Any help making sense of this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Reply

There is no pixel hunting in this game, so random clicking really isn't needed. A few methodical clicks, perhaps.

Here's something to get you started:

Try selecting the vase with water, then click on each of the walls until something happens.

Reply
evilmrhenry May 14, 2008 3:59 PM

valhalla076: The walls are clickable items.

Reply

valhalla, do this:

With the vase selected, click the wall in the bottom left room. Use the blue key to open a door. Grab green paint and sunshine. Use green paint on the bottom room. Grab key from shapes mouth and use on key hole to open door with red tomatoes. Use red tomatoes on top right room to reveal a dog.
That's all I have so far.

Yeah, I'm stuck, too, and the end seems just so close!

I'm at the violet door, the one with the butterfly. I just can't figure out the code you need. I already noticed, that there are numbers at the boat behind the dark blue door: a red 1 and a violet 7, so I suppose the doors are numbered that way. The red door is first, and then you have to go clockwise. But I just don't get the code numbers behind the single doors. Help please!

Reply

Chrys,

I tried the number of letters for ROYGBIV, but that didn't work.

Reply
NotAPipe May 14, 2008 4:07 PM

the code isnt too hard:

if you let red be 1 and go around assigning numbers with violet as 7 then the code is the order you opened the doors

im stuck after that, there doesnt seem to be anything else to do, but the door wont open

Reply

Here's more:

With the tomatoes selected, click on the collar of the red dog. For each piece of the collar that you click on, reselect the tomatoes and keep knocking them off until the door appears. Orange paint is underneath that. The orange key is behind the train car and the blue key is underneath the sack from the character at the top.
Go one room to the right and use the orange paint on the wall. Use the sun shape to fill in the fish and use the key. Grab the yellow paint. Click on the fisherman to get the yellow key. Also, get the yellow star.
Go one room to the right and use the yellow paint.

Reply

pan:

Maybe you're onto something though. on the boat, 1 is red and 7 is violet... I considered 1234567, but nope.

Reply

Hint for the last door:

In what order did you open the doors?

Oy, this one's pretty simple right up to the very end, where I'm stuck. Anyone have any hints on

how to get the whole code? I found two numbers, red 1 and violet 7 on the boat in the... indigo room? I got the key already, just can't figure out what numbers are for the rest of the rooms.

Thanks!

There are 4 stars in the blue room, 3 stones in the orange room, and I'm not sure if those might help

I've got it to

Ok, I entered the code, but nothing happens. I cant change the code, the numbers are locked in place and all I have with me left is the violet flowers.

when you entered the right code, the numbers will not change anymore!

NotAPipe May 14, 2008 4:34 PM

you have to find the purple key:

you can take a branch from one of the trees in the green room, there is a fire in the yellow room and a snowman in need of melting in the red room

Reply

There are several places that *seem* as if they should be clickable, but don't seem to be.

the snowman in the red door

the fire in the yellow door

the blue people toward the bottom of the yellow door

Any idea whether these are meaningful or just glitches?

Reply

I am missing the last key!

there is a file and I have the purple flowers

Help!

Reply

Interestingly...

For the yellow door, a fire truck appears AFTER you paint the purple. The flame is clickable, but doesn't seem to do anything.

Reply

Richard, yes they are all important and clickable at some point.

Reply

Yay, solved. I liked the reuse of the scenes behind the doors...but can't reveal more than that!

nik, you have to

find and combine a few items, then use this combo somewhere

to get the purple key.

I got the key for the violet door

first go to the green door and grab the right branch of the right front tree. then go to the yellow door and click on the fire on the building to light the branch. then go to the red door and click the snow man to melt him and get the violet key.

Reply

I got the butterfly and the code which is 5412367, the order in which you opened the doors when you consider red to be 1 and purple to be 7, but I can't find the key.

Reply

A-ha!!!

If you're stuck on the purple key problem:

The snowman is in the way. How can you get him to stop blocking the door?

Perhaps something in another room might help?

Of course, you might need a tool to do that safely...

Perhaps there's something in another door that will help?

That gold leaf sure was helpful before. What a thoughtful forest...

Reply

Thank you Ellis!!!
It is logical form one point on!

find something behind the green door.

Then turn up the heat!

And see the trouble melt away!

Reply

To those confused about Nik's advice, the more normal terms are blue and indigo, not teal and blue ;)

Reply

I'm past the code. I have a

red doll head, black key and purple flowers.

Where to use?

Reply

Let's see if anyone else is stuck on the same part I am:

I have some flowers. I have entered the code into the butterfly. Nothing else that is "click-able" will respond to my clicks.

Last 2 locks...

I have all but 2 of the last 2 white locks opened. I can't seem to find where the key goes for the last 2 locks (prolly just need to find it once).

I just realised something about the end

The "severed" head in Agent Icarus's walkthrough, which is really an octopus, works because octopii can contain black ink! That, and the code format, were the main non-intuitive steps.

@Tom

Ahhh, that's what that thing was! Now it makes more sense!

@ Tom & Agent I

I thought it was the head an scarf for the snowman (it looked like a snowman, but for the color). After it melted and washed to sea, it was caught be fisherman guy. But your octopus makes sense with the black ink connection.

omg, yay! I'm so happy you guys accepted my game!!! ^_^ thnx, I feel so honored!
I still find myself playing this game over and over again :P Mainly cause it's the only point and Cick game I've ever been able to beat without a walkthrough XD

Reply

Geez. I thought I was almost done halfway through it and was thinking this was a pretty easy but fun room escape, but boy was I wrong!

Arg. Unlocking the purple door was annoying. How was I supposed to remember which order I opened the doors when all my items are out of order and I didn't realize I was supposed to be keeping track in the first place?? I love the minimalism, but that 'puzzle' kinda took me out.

What about the game "Escape form the room of RAINBOW" by Shanben Izakamakura?
I cannot find a valid link anywhere on the web. Anyone know of a current working link?

Reply
Otto G. May 15, 2008 10:24 AM

i actually beat the whole thing.

that was so badass.

Reply

zbeeblerox, the items you need to look at were in order, just not all in the same line

The paint cans you read left to right, but you have to remember that the vase of water was first and the tomatoes were the 3rd door (red).

Of you still needed the help EMDF, I'll give you a hint:

I found it in the red room, but I had to clear out a little snow first. If only it was warmer out...

Anyway, after finally finishing this I was really pleased with everything except for two things:

Finding the code required remembering which order you opened the doors in, and to me that was not worth my time. I just read the answer to it.

and

Double clicking on the blimp seemed wrong, unless I was only supposed to click on the 8 and just did it wrong a bunch of times. That's not as big a deal to me as the code, though. I didn't really feel the need to play through it again just to figure that out.

Very good game though! Only needed the one hint to finish it.

Well, that was a fun and interesting, albeit surrealistic, game. lol

Cute game!!
It was only the last white key I found troublesome, otherwise a neat casual challenge.

The narrative walkthrough is well written.

What a beautiful game. It's now one of my favorite Point-and-clicks. =)

...Someone BESIDES ME wrote a narrative walkthrough? It seems I struck gold with that method sooner than I thought.

Reply

I admit that SonicLover's other narrative walkthroughs gave me the idea. They are more useful for room escape type games, because as the writer you can create a sense of what's going on at the same time, rather than 'click here', 'click there', 'win'.

I've only written two narrative walkthroughs so far, three if you count Questionaut's Diary. I'm anxious for another one of these room-escape games to appear on JIG so I can do another one.

...I mean, there are lots of older escape games already here that I could go for, but then who'd see my work?

Reply

mehehehehehehe.... i will kick who ever locked me in that room in the first place. oh and question. how do you get locked in all of these room escape games. people don't want you to escape in the first place. so why ruin there dreams?????....jk

Reply

The code is

5, 4, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7

Reply

when you have one lock left on the whitedoor, just click the door.

Reply

Did anyone else notice how on the finishing screen

The airship/blimp thingy now says "Go To Infinity"?

Reply

Hello the last white key is hidden in the doornob of the white door.

Reply

LOVED this one! I hope to find more by this designer soon.

For the code- Each slot stands for a room. You put the order in which you opened the doors. For example, the light blue is the first one so you would put 5 because it is the 5th color in the rainbow. so the code is:5,4,1,2,3,6,7.

♥ANOTHER WAY♥

I started in a heptagonal room with bare white walls. Turning to face southwest, I found three items: some purple flowers, the vase of water containing the flowers, and a light blue key.

I threw the water at the bare wall in front of me. Behold, the outline of a bird appeared with a keyhole in it. I used the key to open the door. Behind the door I found two items: a bucket of green paint, and an orange sun, a removable part of the scene.

I made a mental note to remember in which order I opened the doors, as I had a hunch it might be useful later.

The Green Door

Turning to face south, I threw the green paint at the white wall. A snake appeared, holding an item: a green key. I took the green key and turned it in the keyhole.

A green door appeared. Behind it I found two items: some red tomatoes, and a branch from one of the trees.

The Red Door

Leaving the door open, I turned to face north by northeast, and threw a tomato at the wall. A dog appeared, but there was no keyhole (and indeed I had no key for one).

Was the dog wearing a string of pearls? I threw the tomatoes at the pearls one by one until 6 of them turned red. Suddenly a red door appeared.

Behind the door I found three items: a bucket of orange paint, an orange key behind the tram (which I dragged to one side) and an indigo key in Santa's sack (from the man on the roof).

The Orange Door

Turning to face east by northeast, I threw the orange paint at the wall. A fish appeared, but the orange key did nothing at first.

I noticed that the fish's eye looked like the orange sun from the light blue door. Lo and behold, the sun fitted into a slot in the fish. I used the key again, and an orange door appeared.

Behind the door I found three items: a bucket of yellow paint, a yellow star, and a yellow key (which the fisherman had caught).

The Yellow Door

Turning to face southeast, I threw the yellow paint at the wall. A bat appeared, but two parts were missing. I filled in the star-shaped spot with my yellow star, but I needed something else on the right.

I returned to each door I had already opened looking for anything to fill the space. Behind the green door I found that one of the trees had yellowed. I found a yellow leaf in it. I returned to the yellow bat. I used the leaf on the door and opened it with the key.

Behind the door I found one item: a bucket of indigo paint.

The Indigo Door

Turning to face west by northwest, I threw the indigo paint at the wall. A whale appeared. I used the indigo key from the red door scene to reveal the door.

Behind the door I found one item: a bucket of violet paint. I also noted the numbers on the boat: a red 1 and a violet 7.

The Violet Door

Turning to face north by northwest, I threw the violet paint at the wall. A butterfly appeared with a keypad and keyhole in it.

I deduced that the keypad was somehow connected to the 7 doors. I further deduced that each door was represented by a number: 1 represented the red door, 7 the violet door, and the remaining numbers the doors in between, in the order Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet.

Fortunately I kept a record of the order in which I had discovered each door. The (light) blue door was opened first, so the first number of the code must be 5 - the number representing light blue. It seemed counter-intuitive, but it worked.

One of my favourite escape games- fun and colourful. I only needed to peek at the walkthrough twice. Absolutely loved it. When I finished I just had to grin.
