JessThe Final Spell

So you have Harry Potter, see? Only, ok, make him shorter. And plumper. And with a bowlcut reminiscent of Javier Bardem's Oscar-winning performance in "No Country For Old Men." This is Tom "Tucker" Crubucker, and he's a student at Hogwarts—er, Zibward Wizard School, sorry--and he needs your help. You see, he's about to take his final exam, and it's his last chance to earn his wizarding diploma. But poor Tom is so nervous and so clumsy that he accidentally trips and bangs his head against a table--and when he wakes up he's in a locked room full of magical objects and enigmatic puzzles! Good thing he has an army of veteran point-and-clickers to help him out, eh?

The Final Spell is not the most polished room escape game I've ever seen, nor is it the prettiest or most ingenious. It is, however, undeniably charming and completely good-humored. The format of the game will be familiar to anyone who has played a few of the kabillion examples of the point-and-click genre: collect objects, combine objects, use objects in more-or-less logical ways with the rest of the room, etc. No pixel-hunting, though, hallelujah! The puzzles are fairly easy and intuitive, and it probably won't take you more than 10 minutes or so to complete the game. What makes The Final Spell fun is its sense of humor, provided mainly by the many pamphlets and books scattered around the room, and sheer cuteness; an endearing amateurish sensibility is combined with just enough substance to leave you grinning.

The game does have a few annoyances, most notably that many of the necessary objects in the room are impossible to pick up until one has read the correct book or pamphlet; however, the game is nice enough to tell you that it isn't time yet. Also, near the end players might be stumped by a matter of semantics or, as I like to call it, "I have the answer but the &$&#! game isn't recognizing it" syndrome. Still, taken for what it is--a quirky, fun little adventure, perfect for a coffee break--The Final Spell does not disappoint. If the Submachine series is a marathon workout, think of The Final Spell as light calisthenics.

Help Tom achieve his wizarding destiny.

Walkthrough
A note: The most humorous things in the game are arguably the ones not important to the plot. I encourage you to explore things not listed in these steps.

Learn What You Need!

Start out by going two screens to the right. Click on the bookshelf. Then click on each book, and click the pages of the closed books to read them. (Yes, you must actually click through them to progress.) Take not of any potentially useful information:

In the green book, note what the genie shouts. In the purple book, get the picture of the legends.

Exit that screen and go to the trash can. Read the note. Proceed to find everything needed for the exit spell.

Find Everything!

Three pencils:

1. In the trash bin.
2. By the leg of the desk.
3. In the cupboard under the cauldron.

Three feathers:

1. In the inkwell on the desk.
2. On the bookshelf, behind the snail.
3. The right end of the top potion shelf.

Five cards:

1. Behind the trash bin (only in the close-up view)
2. In the right desk drawer.
3. On the bookshelf, behind the bookend.
4. Under the the dog bed(?) under the potion shelves.
5. In the torch by the cauldron.

A Key

In the right desk drawer.

A blue bead

In the left desk drawer.

Cast the Spell!

1.Place the picture, the pencils, and the feather in the cauldron. Click on the cauldron to get the potion.
2. On the screen with the five symbols, place each card on its respective symbol.
3. Use the key on the chest. Take the orb.
4. Go left and use the potion on the door. Click the field above the lamp to enter the password.

The password is the word that the genie shouts in the green book. Use lowercase, and remember the exclamation point.

Congrats!

Stuck at the end with evil eye and glowing orb

don't forget the "!" ....

How do you finish it ? Stuck with blue bead and glowing orb. What next ?

Not being able to click on various items really takes away from any connection with the story one might have. These designers should have spent a bit less time on self-aggrandizement and a bit more on designing a good game. Poor.

Solution: remember, they SHOUTED out something.

Reply

Very easy, short game.

Cute! Unfortunately, I needed the hint--thanks tim! I swore I had it...but not. Exactly what the review said. The nice thing is that, except for that, the game provides just the right hints, and I thought everything was logical. Finally! I get frustrated with the games that aren't.

Thanks for the nice little time waster!

Quite poor. No depth at all. Really 2nd class if you compare to the likes of gotmail. Too much story and not enough game. Why is this in here? JIG is normally better than this.

Reply

>:( Where's the third darn feather? And what the heck is 'Late For Date'?

Reply

...nevermind.

Reply

It was rather easy, and everything was logical. I really liked this one!

Reply

Okay, this is ridiculous.

I have the evil eye and the protection aura. At the door, I typed in PAY! I typed in OUTPAY! I put in OUT PAY! I even tried quotes around them all. Nothing is working! I have the password, but it won't let me out! What am I doing wrong?

Reply

I'm stuck
I have:

A glowing orb, a loop

And I did:

collected all the cards and get the orb. I also put three feathers in the kettle

Reply

LaShawn:

You don't need the "out". And the password is case sensitive. Have you tried lowercase?

never mind I have a code to fill in now
any hints?

Reply

I figured out the password =P

If you read the green book, it says in the end "...and shouted out gray!"
The password is "gray!" With the exclamation point.

Reply

GAH...

Got everything...

got the 3 feathers, and the 3 colors... but what the the wall of 3 wishes *the lamp* isn't full... Its got 90% of the smoke done... but won't let me get that last bit to become the wall of 3 wishes. I got the 'glowy orb" and the "protection from evil eye" so what am I missing?

Reply

Ashiel:

the wall of the three wiches is also an ingridient! Tip: check the books

Reply

Very, very easy!

Reply

correction, I just can't figure out the word now. :( *ish sad*

I typed in please! PLEASE! and Please! but nothing works!

Reply

Ah...turned out that my keyboard is running out of batteries (I have a cordless), so when I

put in pay! the shift key didn't work and it made it a 1 instead.

Stupid keyboard1

Reply

Bambi:

It's all lowercase (please!). I should have been more specific. And for others who are reading this, the password is randomized, so you may not have the same word. It will be all lowercase, though.

Reply

It is betray!

Really cute game, I liked it^^~ Reading the comments, I noticed that the password to get out is different everytime... Just a heads up for people wondering why other people's passwords are not working for them...

Reply

This was an okay game. I'm not terribly impressed though. It could have been more obvious about the password. It really would have made more sense if they would have

made it so you wouldn't add the exclamation point

but not too bad overall. It is a short, quick game. Some of the info in the books is a bit witty.

Reply

I am not sure why everyone is saying the password is

pay!

However that did not work for me, for me

day!

worked

Reply

Nice little one.
No offense meant but it was nice to break away a little from the Japanese mind in point and clickers.
It was very easy but, I guess it was what the creator(s) intended it to be.
I'll sure knock the score upwards.

Reply

For password it seems to be different for everyone. Mine was

yay!

Typed it in and nothing happened, but I had to hit Enter on my keyboard.

Reply

I love this. I really, really hate sitting at an escape-the-room pixelhunting or frantically rubbing every object on everything else to find the secret illogical combination: everything here was clearly laid out and either entirely logical or hinted at, although it was annoying to have arbitrary restrictions on collecting the cards.

I would actually call this a very paragon of escape games.

if you click the screwdriver in the trash, he says he can play late for date. I think it might be a hint for another game called late for date by the same company.

Reply

Lizard - Thanks for your walkthrough.

I had everything but I couldn't figure out the password.

Reply

hi all, no point in saying what the password is, as it's different every time you play, mine was c'moon!, some people have gray! etc etc

look in the green book to find out the password for your game, it's what was shouted and needs to be put in lower case with the ! at the end

Reply

the passwprd is not the same all the time.. check the

green book

last line together with exclimation

for the password

Reply

I hated that game.
The characters stubbornness to not take a bead until I had read a bloody book was extremely frustrating.
I expected better.

Reply

Bit silly, very easy, and the whole not picking things up until you knew you needed them was either slightly refreshing, or just really annoying... can't decide. Still it wasted a few minutes of my life, so can't complain.

Reply

you have to press "enter" when you're through typing. it took me forever to realize this and when I did I was like "duh!" we can't all be winners.lol.

clay! and don't forget the '!'

Reply

The password isn't pay!, it's Beetlejuice! Seriously. It is.

Reply

no-one said you have to press enter at the end!! i was wondering why it didnt work...

Reply

The password IS different for everyone, and is different every time you play the game. Hint: look in the books.

Cute game...and easy. Which is good--for me. :)
