JayBodiliesBodilies is an original, humorous and sassy, graphic adventure that features an elaborate audio-visual production and an engaging story, too. It was originally conceived and developed for a class assignment at the Hogeschool van de Kunsten Utrecht by Jeroen Stout, Mick Moolhuisen, and Roy de Groot.

Submitted by 'Canadian' earlier today: "It combines beautiful graphics and animation, and haunting, melodic music with a story that actually works and feels right. Help Neil in his quest for freedom and self-actualization; it leads you through an interesting point-and-click adventure you won't soon forget! "May your voyages take you to places where imagination has no bounds."

You may save your progress by clicking "Save game" just beneath your inventory (lower left of the game window). Doing so will give you a number with which you can enter and reload the game later, or even at a different computer.

Play Bodilies

Note: Due to some inappropriate language and a rather mature-themed storyline (lots of text), the game is not recommended for young children.

Argh. I made it into the mine. Now what?

I'm having trouble telling whether I can use an item (or have used one)--for instance,

I thought the icon might be the 'relic', so I wanted to bring the villagers a photo of it (or put it in the empty bag)

but I can't tell whether I'm doing something wrong, the action is impossible, or what--there doesn't seem to be any feedback. Or is there a flash update I needed to install? Is anyone else having trouble with this?

AHHH!, i can't find the relic! it's driving me nuts!

There seems to be a theme here... it's very very subtle... call me crazy, but I think there might be just a smigden of anti-clericalism here! Thank God (oops, sorry, slipped) that they didn't try to bash us over the head with it.

It reminds me of the French Revolution! What a peaceful, freeing, tolerant time that was.

After an hour I finally found the relic!

It's a schematic you get from the factory worker. To get inside, you have to take a picture of the slums (Go down to the area of the slums with the boy and the bucket, and take a picture of "Slums", and a picture of the town area in the mine (the one that stretches on for miles). Show the pictures to the protest leader, and he'll let you in.

Wow! I love the Writer. :(

Art is great.

Music is incredible. I guess when you don't need (C) permission (it's an education project), just knowing about the music is enough.

Strange: lots of loving attention on word play, but several grammatical/vocab/spelling errors. I guess Dutch English speakers are neither native nor non-native English speakers. Or maybe just rushed :-)

The art and music are polished, but not the language.

The ending made me so sad! You were just like the stranger! Oh my God! Aaargh! I wanted to see the church fall! I am angry and disappointed!

Other than that, great game.

Reply

GREAT GAME!! I loved the atmosphere and the subtle humor of it. The gameplay was good, too. I got through most of it myself and only used the walkthrough maybe 3 or 4 times when I really got stuck.

Reply

I enjoyed the game a lot, the plot made it infinately more interesting and fun than if it were just a run-of-the-mill point and click game. Great find.

I hope the artists get around the fixing the spelling+grammar to make the experience a little more fluid.

You should probably emphasize the mature language in the review a little more, it was rather corse, not that I am a prude or anything :)

All in all, quite fun.

I have reached very near the end point and I am stuck. I think I have done everything in the walkthrough except the final step. However,

I can't seem to get back to the Hearthill factory because it says I need samples and the launch pad location first. But I have the bag of gas and the piece of metal, and I've been to the launch pad. Is there another sample I'm missing that I didn't notice in the walkthrough? Or is this a bug?

If this is a bug, could someone please tell me the ending so I know what is supposed to happen next, since I can't seem to see it?

Thanks.

Reply

That's a really great game. The dialogue was a bit weird at times, but as it was a project for a school in The Netherlands, I can't complain!
Pretty much everything The Writer said was perfect, the design was neat, and the music was placed really well.
The only downside I really saw was

"The Relic" - that really messed me up for a long time, as I kept thinking I missed something somewhere.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed this game.

Reply

Looks like this is down at the moment :(

Reply

I really love this game, although it is not actually a game is it? The music is fantastic and the writers have a great sense of humour, very dry.
The only problem I have is that it takes AGES!!!!! to load the scenes. I am waiting 5 to 10 minutes and am afraid to leave the scene and go to another just because I have to wait so long. Oh well, it is worth it.

Reply

my links seem to be broken... might be just my compy but thought you might want to check it out jay

Reply

I think the problem is that this game is currently spreading virally across the Web, and there are many, many people trying it out. The game is being served from an educational institution, however, so there is likely a threshold limit on the number of incoming connections requesting the subdomain on which the game exists.

What this means is that you will have to "wait your turn" for each file the game requires to be downloaded. Each scene loads a new file, so that could mean that game play is slowed as the interest in the game remains high.

Reply

wow! i just beat the game! it's pretty cool at the end.

i like the pictures of the humans at the end. it ends just like the beginning.

Reply

It's a bit slow, but it's a time killer.

Btw, I believe the music is from Jeff Beal's "Carnivale".

Well I dug it. I had to find help for getting out of the mine but the rest was easy and entertaining enough.

I loved the music, but I read earlier that it's not done by the designers? Anyone have a list of what tracks/games were used?

Reply

xadrian - click credits at the bottom of the game window, you will see a complete list of tracks used or remixed in the game.

Reply

Game-wise, very enjoyable, polished and thought-out; wonderful music choices, and very nice, original graphics. The Hall of Truth puzzle was a fun variant on "choose the right word path" -- plus, my solution differed slightly from the walkthroughs I've seen, so kudos to the creators for multiple paths!

Story-wise is where I think this falters a bit. While the plot set-up and environments are great and very different for this type of online game, I wish that we had gotten to see an event in action that finally pushed Neil to become such an outspoken anti-clerical proponent in a place where no one wants to speak up rather than constantly being told by Neil that that's how he is, or how the church is. Something akin to the moment near the end of the game

when the writer's house is quietly found burned down to ashes.

That event was really written in nicely and naturally, and made me sympathize more with Neil's outlook than with anything he had said.

Also, yeah, the odd grammatical clean-up would've been nice, but it wasn't incredibly distracting. Anyway, good times.

I have not quite finished this game yet (I think I'm getting close though) but the visuals were a real treat. The watercolour style backgrounds are stunning although perhaps not always the best match for the more cartoonish characters.

I loved the music which (at first) I had assumed to be original; but I checked the credits after Jonathan's early comment and found that they were all borrowed from other games. That said, a good and sensitively-chosen selection of music which matched the look of the game.

Sometimes, a point 'n' click game need have a certain degree of visual style and puzzle appeal to lift it above the basic Flash escape-the-room variety. Examples from IDAC (such as 'The Bar') have this extra level of polish. I feel that this game has a comparable level of complexity, originality, visual appeal and back-story to really stand out from the field.

Simply one of the VERY best online games I have ever seen. The music is excellent as well. Haven't solved it yet (no spoilers please, takes the fun away) but will come back to it a bit.. soon as I am done playing with (on 12 string acoustic) with the "Outside" theme. ;)

Still I like it very very much! At first I did'nt really understand it, But it got really FUN after that. Hehs (:

Wow. Can't believe I missed this one until now. What a beautiful and really neat game.

I didn't mind the spelling 'differences' - most of which were of the color colour category.

The story and humor really worked. The art is awesome, the puzzles very logical.

Love, love, love this one.

I just wish

Neil had been able to get back to his own world so we could see the church get overthrown.
But I guess it made circular logic to have him become another 'Hawk' on a new world.

Ugh! I hated it! I love point and click games but this was just a waste of time. Everyone kept on talking and there is no way you can get around all that conversation!

I like plots as much as the next person but this was just annoying.

Reply

Oh my god (oops, i mean oh my allah) i absolutely love this game. The whole "war-against-the-church-gone-mad" theme is simply amazing. I think that any game with a revolutionary theme is great because it really inspires change. It's fun to think of true freedom of religion, free to do whatever you want without the church trying to dictate everything you do. I encourage everyone to try this game. But hurry! Before the Christian Church finds out and throws a hissy fit over it. Truely fun game. 5 stars!

Reply

Wow! Congratulations! This plot is really forward thinking and original. I mean, it's almost like, freethinking, man. Can we be sure that this game won't be shut down by teh (sic) powers that be?

If we get our wish to abolish the Church, should we allow people to actually be Christians if they choose--theoretically--without coercion?

And the game itself... The intro loaded in about 3 minutes. Then the first "level" (prison block) has been loading for about 5 minutes now with no visible progress.

Surely there must be something going wrong here.

Wow... one of the best point and click games I've played in a long time! And pretty colors! woot!

I must be missing something. All I can do is go to the church and get the books, see the clerk at the hall of truth (not dressed right), and see the ticket guy at the station (need a ticket). After an hour of trying and clicking everything everywhere, I wish I could have played the game.

Ah! You have to click on the lights! the glowing orbs from the city view are places.

And is it just me or is the server down or something? In the middle of playing it stopped working and then 404 message. I hope I don't forget my #... 31493. There :)

None of the links work-- Bodilies seems to have disappeared from the face of the Earth! Does anyone know where I can find the game? I remember playing this great game a year ago and I'd like to play again.

Oh dear, it appears the requested URL was not found....
Is something wrong with the server?

Everything with my internet is working fine atm. The game doesn't work on firefox either. Also, none of the external links on this page work.

I think I'm having the same problem as Matt. Even the link you gave me won't work. I'll just give up, thanks for your help all the same!

I followed all the instructions and changed my DNS. One thing I noticed was my computer didn't have one previously set, would that be part of the problem? But alas, no luck. I'll just have to find another game to play.

Thanks Jay!

[Edit: No worries, and I'm sorry you're still experiencing trouble with it. -Jay]

Just a random other post to inform you that, it now works!
I think the DNS did the trick. Thanks!

[Edit: Awesome. :o) -Jay]

FYI, I've been attempting to re-play this game over the last few days. Seems that it goes 404 rather frequently - frustratingly, right in the middle of playing, sometimes, necessitating lots and lots of restarts. I just today noted the savegame functionality, so I'm hoping that'll work when it comes back next.

I can't say I particularly liked it; neither graphics nor gameplay were very good. My impression is that the creator of the game isn't very artistically inclined. Too many of the backgrounds had me thinking, "I'm not really sure what this is, but it's supposed to be some kind of mine tunnel because that's what the game says it is" painted things (though admittedly, the big main map was okay), and the art drawn using Flash was worse. The humor was few. The benefits of no real pixel hunting and logical puzzles (plus excellent music) were overshadowed by the overly easy gameplay. I like the idea, the theme, but the game itself just had a big old "eh" to it.

i feel incredibly stupid for asking this... where's the excavation site?!

Confused. June 26, 2010 2:54 PM

Um. I may just be a total moron, but after I get the books from the priest, I can't find the next location I'm supposed to go to (said in walkthrough)! I'm digging the theme, but can someone tell me where on the map to look for the you-know-where?

Confused is now Heartbroken! June 26, 2010 3:27 PM

I CRIED at the part

where the child was beaten by his boss, & has to fish constantly, with a BROKEN BUCKET, to keep his family from starving... :'(

I thought they could have done without a few of those curses...But whatever. Great game, truly.

Looking for the relic?

THERE IS NO RELIC!

I think the thing that's confusing people about the relic is

When you talk to the guards, the conversation makes it sound like you need to go get the relic before they will give you the impressive clothing. Actually, they give you the clothing during that conversation, so there's no need to find a relic at all.

One small problem I had with the game was that there was no on-screen indication when new items had been added to your inventory. Something along the lines of "you got the bucket" might have saved a lot of people a lot of frustration.

Overall, a great game, especially for a class project :)

And so it comes full circle.

I thought the ideology was rather neat. However, the focus on "the Church" being evil bothered me. It is not just a single religion taking over. "The Church" is representative of any collective group of people trying to force their beliefs on others.

The "Thinkers" were quite funny.

One likes alcohol and the other only visits for the snacks!

The CAKE is a lie!

But weren't there FOUR of them? You have "Left", "Right", and "Middle". But "Middle" is actually "Middle Left" and "Right" is "Middle Right"! The guy on the far Right never talks!

Hrm, Bodilies, body lies? Good game, I liked it, though not telling me when stuff is added to my inventory had me standing around confused for a long time. It's also a bit frustrating when you try to use an object on something and it just gives you the same text you get if you clicked it without the object, if that makes sense. It'd be better if Neil just said "You can't use that" so I know the game acknowledged the object. A lot of times, things that I thought -should- have worked were wrong.
But the story was nice. I didn't really get the idea that 'religion is evil' but more like 'oppresion is evil'.

I loved the analogues! You can see what the slums and the mines are supposed to be when you mouse over their pictures.
City=Mouth
Factory=Heart
Slums=Stomach
Mines=Abdomen (I believe they are the intestines!)
The mouth and heart symbolism is rather obvious, though there was a nice touch about how the workers never stop in the factory. The pool of acid in the slums is the acid in the stomach, which can dissolve metal…I liked the mines the most. Mines=twisting tubes of the intestines, where every last nutrient is "mined" from food.

Ah, the game is gone from the link! I even clicked that "downforeveryoneorjustme" link, and it says it's down for real.

Is there any alternate host site?
