Scramble125SeedI've never had much of a green thumb. Most of the plants I try to care for either die from neglect or get eaten by something mysterious, and I've learned to accept this. But Newgrounds contributor, Andr01d, refuses to let a plant-incompatible guy like me suffer.

Seed is a soothing, botany-based diversion that lets you cross-breed several different kinds of flowers into pretty mutant hyper-flowers. Simply select a flower species from the menu and it will spawn into one of five available locations in the dirt. Click on your creation to clone it, or click-drag and drop on another flower to crossbreed. Doing so will spawn a third flower into an available spot in the dirt. To delete a flower, hold [shift] and click on it. You may have five flowers only onscreen at a time, so additional crossbreeding or cloning when all spots are occupied will cause one flower to be deleted at random — so clone your favorite creations often. As an alternative, you can just let evolution decide all of this for you; this option gets very interesting if you have several species of flower in play.

Of course, it wouldn't be much of a game if you couldn't share your creation with others. Just drag your flower into a box in the upper right-hand corner to see its "DNA," the code you can copy and paste for others to view. I've seen some very interesting creations from simply crossbreeding the same species over and over again — so experiment freely and see what appears!

Analysis: Seed is a small game, but it'll keep you engaged for a while, particularly if you share your discoveries with others and try out their creations, too. Challenge yourself to create the largest, smallest, or most colorful flower you can. Right now the options are limited as there are about nine initial flowers, but the author has indicated he may add more later. For the moment, it's an intriguing little webtoy. Play Seed.

Walkthrough Guide

This walkthrough (or "guide") explains what each element in your DNA coding does, how you can change it, and is aimed to assist you in genetically engineering the plant of your dreams.

Let's start out with some basic DNA. This is the DNA of the little pink flower that you start out with.

Now, beyond the spoiler tags, I will explain what every one of these numbers does.

With the following leters, the ones that I did not list have no apparent effect on the flower, so, rather than writing "I don't know" several different ways, I have simply excluded them.
A

This affects the heighth of the flower. The higher the number, the taller the flower.


B

This hexadecimal is the color of your stem. Don't bother changing the 0 out in front, just change the next 6 digits to match an HTML color code.


C

The number of flowers your plant will have.


D

This affects the roundness of the petals. The effects are subtle. Lower numbers result in harder edges while higher numbers result in smother edges.


E

A number from 20 to 60, this is how tall the stem grows after the branches stem off.


F

Affects the size of the flower's core. Set between 0 and 1.


G

The width of the stem.


H

The speed that the stem grows, from 1 to 1.5.


I

How far apart the flowers are spaced.


K

The size of the flower's core.


L

How many layers of petals the flower will have.


M

Seems to affect the potential for the leaves being offset to the side. Results are subtle.


Q

The width of the border around the petals.


T

Changes the color of the border around the flower's petals.


U

Affects the color of the center of the flower. Again, this is done with color codes.


V

Use a color code to set the color of the petals. Note that this is just the general color, and each leaf has potential to deviate from it.


W

How big the center of the flower is.


X

How large the petals are.


Z

The number of petals on each flower.


AA

How much the petals in deeper layers appear. Will only work if L is greater than one. Set between 1 and 2.. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.


AB

How much the petals dent inwards. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.

I actually made it in part by manually changing some of the numbers in the DNA of a hybrid flower I made. Kinda cheating, but it's cool to see what happens. You can make a "tree" by changing some of the first few numbers to big ones (around 50, or 100 if you're daring). But then it starts running a little slower.

Funny enough, I'm STILL playing plant tycoon. This felt a little lacking comparatively- it lacked a sense of atmosphere or accomplishment.

I quickly became bored with breeding an infinite number of flowers that tended to overwrite each other in ways I least liked. I tried playing with the dna manually and accomplished nothing.

Then I noticed if you misformatted the dna, it would plant a sqaure. The DNA for this sqaure seemed to be the 'base' DNA. Out of curiosity, I planted 5 of them- exact same dna, all VERY basic, and hit auto-evolve.

And THEN the toy seemed much, much more interesting. Mutation and random selection, but it already seemed to me that there was some kind of tendency towards more complex flowers.

So I left it on overnight and came back to this PC-crusher:

After carefully combining together many of the plants here, I finally managed to get something that I REALLY like. =D

Something I noticed, whenever you clone a plant, its genetic code changes. Usually its very slight, but one while cloning a plant its leaves got way darker and the bark changed from a light purple to a brown. =)

I really enjoyed this game. I think something that would beneficial to this game would be the ability to change DNA stranges for leaves, roots, thorns, "venus flytrap" things, bulbs, plants that grow down rather than up, or even able to add bugs for the plants to become immune and evolve to protect against. Beautiful game.

To all those who tweaked the DNA and posted it on here... those are cool! (= I tried Neonaxes's idea, and it is pretty nice, with plants just exploding every few seconds and evolving.

I think I figured it out. The first number is the height, then, tree trunk color, amount of flowers. I haven't figured out the rest, though. I'll keep experimenting.

I really love this. I always wanted to make something similar to this, like evolution simulators, or life simulators.

But you know what would be really cool? environment! something that would take off the arbitrariness of the mutation. So that we could see the actual evolution as it happens in nature. for example, if the plants have more chances of mixing with another plant to generate a new one if they have bright colors. so the tendency would be the plants become even brighter.

great fun though, I like to keep it running minimized while i'm doing something else.

With the following leters, the ones that I did not list have no apparent effect on the flower, so, rather than writing "I don't know" several different ways, I have simply excluded them.
A

This affects the heighth of the flower. The higher the number, the taller the flower.


B

This hexadecimal is the color of your stem. Don't bother changing the 0 out in front, just change the next 6 digits to match an HTML color code.


C

The number of flowers your plant will have.


D

This affects the roundness of the petals. The effects are subtle. Lower numbers result in harder edges while higher numbers result in smother edges.


E

A number from 20 to 60, this is how tall the stem grows after the branches stem off.


F

Affects the size of the flower's core. Set between 0 and 1.


G

The width of the stem.


H

The speed that the stem grows, from 1 to 1.5.


I

How far apart the flowers are spaced.


K

The size of the flower's core.


L

How many layers of petals the flower will have.


M

Seems to affect the potential for the leaves being offset to the side. Results are subtle.


Q

The width of the border around the petals.


T

Changes the color of the border around the flower's petals.


U

Affects the color of the center of the flower. Again, this is done with color codes.


V

Use a color code to set the color of the petals. Note that this is just the general color, and each leaf has potential to deviate from it.


W

How big the center of the flower is.


X

How large the petals are.


Z

The number of petals on each flower.


AA

How much the petals in deeper layers appear. Will only work if L is greater than one. Set between 1 and 2.. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.


AB

How much the petals dent inwards. For example, a high number makes it look like a clover. Lower numbers make it spikier.

After a great deal of crossing and back-crossing, starting with the alpine lily and adding mainly sunflower with a dash of dahlia and, especially, taking advantage of numerous beneficial mutations, I'm finally satisfied with my Treeflower -- so named because it resembles a tree more than a flower, complete with green leaves and a barkish-coloured stem. (I had several opportunities for the stem to be less green, but the shade I went with seemed to best complement the shades of green in the petal "leaves".)

Some of the DNA values are ranges rather than set numbers, because I bred and crossed them until I had a moderately genetically-diverse population that still shared the overall visual appearance I wanted.

Value P seems to affect the degree of variation in petal colour -- or, to put it another way, the amount of contrast among petals of differing colours. At least, that's the one DNA variable that seems to change along with that characteristic and also not already identified as affecting something else.

I also wound up with some variation in variable N in my assortment of Treeflower hybrids that (barring random mutations) bred true, but I couldn't tell what effect it was having.

Aha! After experimenting with manually altering variable N and seeding with different values, it looks like what it affects is

variation in hue of the petals. At 0.0-0.1, the only variation is in how light or dark the yellow-green shade of each petal is; at 0.2-0.3 some petals begin to appear bluish (and the outlines of some petals are different); at 0.4 some of the altered-hue petals are more purplish and adjacent flowers have unmistakably different-coloured borders; at 0.5 and above the purples tend towards pinker hues and there's even more variation in border as well as petal colour. I imagine there's an upper limit to the range, but I can't tell what it is.

Presumably the colour that shows up at higher values of N would also vary depending on what the base colours of the petals and/or outlines are. I'm thinking of N as "the cubeflower colour effect" myself. (Standard cubeflower has an N value of 0.5.)

Back again with another hybrid. (: This time I wanted to take the fugly (to my eyes) cubeflower/cubey and, using only spontaneous mutations and back-crossing, breed something better-suited to my own aesthetic sense. YMMV.

I call this A. Violotusettia, because the flowers' colours and placement reminded me of the African Violet, the leaf shapes and arrangement reminded me of a Lotus or Water Lily, and the "are those leaves or petals" effect reminded me of Poinsettia.

It really shows just how diverse the evolv-o-matic can be. Both started with the same 5 plants (created from 28 hours of evolv-o-matic, with minor tweaks) and turns into completely different plants!
