Within a Deep Forest

HuntyDynamite Headdy. Cave Story. Hitogata Happa. Why are so many of the most difficult video games also the cutest? Maybe my brain just automatically forgets games that are both ugly and frustrating.

withinadeepforest.gifAdded to the "cute but evil" list comes Within a Deep Forest, a completely free downloadable game for Windows that casts you as a little blue ball, bouncing around a delightfully whimsical little world filled with the most frustrating jumping puzzles known to man.

According to the plot, the evil Dr. Cliché has attempted twice to build a world-freezing ice-bomb; the first attempt was a total failure, and resulted in a sentient, bouncing blue ball (that's you). The second attempt succeeded, and now the clock is ticking, and only you can save the world. Even though "the clock is ticking" according to the plot, there is no time limit, so you have plenty of time to take breaks now and then to watch the adorable creatures and Fraggle-like people who decorate most screens, going about their daily lives more or less oblivious to your presence.

Surprisingly, the game was created with Multimedia Fusion, but shows no signs of it, and has none of the problems that usually plague games made with game creators. The graphics are equally adorable and beautiful, the soothing music goes a long way toward keeping you from destroying all humans when you die for the 900th time, and the sound effects are perfect, with each of the 10 different types of balls you can become making a different and wholly appropriate bouncing sound. There's exploration, there are power-ups (in the form of getting different types of balls), there are plenty of secrets; I'd even be tempted to call it "Metroid-like", although there is no mapping feature and there are no bosses. Unfortunately, it's also incredibly frustrating. The cuteness goes a long way toward compensating for the frustration, however, and in the end it just barely won out enough to encourage me to complete it; despite the cuteness, this is certainly not a "casual game". If you're "hardcore", though, and live for frustration, then this is definitely the game for you, and it even has a "Speed Run" feature with an online scoreboard so you can show the world just how absolutely superhuman you are. Click.

Thanks to the insert credit forums for the tip!

Walkthrough Guide

Here are the locations of the nine ball upgrades. Three additional levels--Crystalline, Utopioca Minor, and Strange Place--aren't necessary, but do provide helpful hints.

#2-Normal Ball

Pinewood Heights, Eastern Side. At one point along the way, you'll be using the updraft from a lava pool.

#3-Iron Ball

Shinock Reign. Climb the tower on the Western Side of Pinewood Heights.

#4-Speed Ball

That Hover Thing. Climb the pillars a screen west of the Eastern Side save point.

#5-Glass Ball

Markstone Ridgemine. Use the Iron Ball to break through the ground two screens west of the base of the tower.

#6-Yoga Ball

Ljux / Utopioca. Use the Iron Ball to pass through the windy cave on the mountain's west side.

#7-Pathetic Ball

Crystal Path. Use the Yoga Ball to reach the opening two screens west of the Eastern Side save point.

#8-Jump Ball

Lunar Cheese Extraction Facility. One screen above the Western Side save point, trigger a switch using the Yoga Ball.

#9-Cold Ball

Shadowlands. Using the Jump Ball, fall into the pit two screens west of the Eastern Side save point, then go one screen east. Fall into the pit on the other side of the screen.

#10-Free Ball

The Future. Using the Cold Ball, fall into the pit one screen east of the Western Side save point, then go one screen west. Enter the time machine.

Finishing the game

Underwater Lab. Using the Pathetic Ball, fall into the pit on the same screen as the Eastern Side save point and pass the tiger. Start from two screens above the Eastern Side save point.

"Secrets Levels.exe"?

Search the Harara Mountains and the Shadowlands for two four-digit combinations. By now, you'll know where to input them.

I think you need a new section or at least some symbol for downloadable games. The profusion of reviews of Windows-only games is annoying when you have to search the text to find whether it's playable online.

Amazing game. Simple, well realized, addictive and fun.

BTW, The soundtrack of this game is one of the best I've ever seen in any game, let alone a freeware.

Great find!

i'd like to see the speedrun(s) ... any idea where to get them?
btw, jay, your site rocks.

Brian - I'm working on a feature that addresses your concern. Soon. In the meantime, should you click on a link without reading our review first, you're on your own.

Cheers, scaph! =)
As far as video of the speedruns go, the game's website only lists the runs as in a high score table. Apparently the game does not save speed runs for later viewing.

my computer is downloading it *so* slow

anyone know what exactly the "yoga ball" does?

I like the style of the game, but it would be nice to have a little more for the eyes. If this game was as visually pleasing as it is innovative, I would pay for it. 3 out of 5.

Good game over all, its a lot shorter than I would have expected it to be. the ending is a little anti-climatic.

Did anyone else notice the numbers flichering in the stars at the top of the practice area (must have ball 8 to get there) and does anyone know what they mean? I thought that on the final level when you had to put in the code that it might get you an alternate ending, but I have yet to make it through with those particular balls.

the number appearing at 3, 6, 8, and 0 at different intervals across the red platforms in the sky...

for tose interested
BTW: Adrian: the Yoga Ball, as far as I can tell, keeps its enertia better than the other balls. Which obviously has some purposes.

The yoga ball is also used to get in the Lunar Cheese Factory. If you go to the upper west side you'll find the gate (off) and a platform with a dragon drawn on it. It and the metal ball ate the only balls that can fight against wind, however, the yoga ball can jump as high as the pink ball.

*sigh* windows only....
someone steal me a windows computer so I can play these delightful games :D

i dont get the spider thing at the top of the tower.
i have ball 2, thats it and i am stuck

i am so stuck on that stupid spider tower thing, its driving me crazy
I NEED HELP WITH IT!

I absolutely adore this game!
The

Mine Cart Ride

was a joy. @gfraed

I believe after the second, I went right on to the fourth. You know those pillars and towers with the "this is to hard for you" hedgehog at the base, with the green bouncy platforms...near the porcupine where you get the pink ball. Well climb up those, and you'll reach some random portal thing which brings you to a spaceship with some tricky hallways to gain the 4th ball (super super bouncy).

help, i'm completely stuck on the underwater level... the part at the begining with the lasers :(

i know that the glass ball is ok with lasers, but the only ones i can even get into the tube are one and seven

Awesome game! The music fit perfectly (and helped dampen the IMMENSE FRUSTRATION at the two hard parts--Can anyone say Glass Ball or Underwater Lasers and not cringe after beating this?!)

Teonis' second spoiler was exactly what I needed to continue and then finish the game, it really isn't incredibly hard once you get the hang of it. I can see why the top speedrun time is

20 MINUTES O_o

Teonis' first spoiler:

Bingo. Turns out that that number sequence, when put in at the end, unlocks one of the bonus games you can reach by going to the game's folder on your hard drive and opening the Secret Levels.exe file. I found another one in

The Shadowlands which opened the other game. I wonder if there are actually more? I never checked the Secret Levels.exe before I played so I don't know if it just blanked them out haha.

My first speedrun?

1:25:something. Lost half an hour due to those dumb lasers and trying to put in the second secret code. But HEY. I ended up 69th place on the Speedrun High Score, can't complain ;P

Hmmm, I have the fist five balls now... and I am stuck. and that is a damned shame cos this is a great game.

Hey all, this game is really excellent, I completed it and had a lot of fun. The
combination puzzle/action is pretty neat.

To answer a few questions:
underwater level:

only go into the underwater level when you have all balls, it's impossible otherwise

spider tower:

There is a creature telling you the spider is important, well guess why? the spider is the only thing that can press the button at the bottom to get you to the end. You need to press the red and blue buttons with your ball to switch red and blue walls.

OK, I'm feeling a touch silly -- I have materials 1-3 and 5-7.

How did I miss #4, and where should I get it?

Alright for Multimedia Fusion!
I love that program, and the guys at Clickteam are geniuses.

I will remain adamant that The Games Factory is the absolute easiest game creation tool for what it makes. As long as you can settle for cartoon-quality graphics, you can do almost literally anything with it.

Good times.

Oh, and another great game made with Multimedia fusion is the superfun Atu'los, a Medieval MMORPG with Legacy of Kain styled graphics.
Or, the origonal, anyway.
Wait, Blood Omen was the sequel, right?

Whatever.

Nevermind, figured it out

Ball #4 comes from climbing the pillars with the green bumpers on top

Good game, I like this a lot..
But what are the secret game called "dodgesquare" and "pop" how do you play them? Or am I missing something

thanks! im at the last level now 0.o good game jay!

some people dont seem to get the spider so

first off, the spider is poisonious, so if yuou touch it, you will die in a few seconds. if you have been to the bottom of the tower, you can see you cant reach the yellow button, so you lust use the red and blue buttons to lead the spider to the bottom to press it for you.

Sarah, if by underwater level, you mean the secret base behind the tiger, you need the 0 ball, since the 0 ball can fly.

Gods and goddesses, this is a tough game.

Does anyone know what ball you need to get past the

laz0rz

in D

octor

C

liché's

U

nderwater

L

ab

? I have 1-7.

First of all, although you CAN enter the lab with just balls 1-7, to beat it, you need ALL of the balls. Second of all, remember that once you start the lab level, you can switch balls, so you don't have to go through the game with just the Pathetic Ball.

So, to get past the trap with the laser beams, all you have to do is avoid touching the walls until the lasers turn off. If you have all 10 balls, this is easy. If you do not, this is impossible.

P.S. I beat it! *does the happy dance*

I know the guy who made it from a musicians community site. A highly talented (and quirky) individual. That would explain why the music is so good :)

same stuck after 5 balls

any hints?

ok, in the tower at the firstplace when you climb onthe bricks, once your in you have to get the spider to the ottom to hit the yellow button, HOW
I NEED HELP PLEASE!!!!!

to sarah

Ya can use 1,2,7 and 8 ya just gotta time it right... dont know what to do in the lazer room though..

This is a great game that I found via another site a week or so ago. It stricks a very good balance between fustration and return-to-ability, so you find yourself going back to it to get just a little bit further.

In response to Teonis:

the numbers unlock the bonus games. The one you've found unlocks the first one, and there is a second 4 digit code to find to unlock the second!

If you're stuck at any point, don't forget to revisit areas you've been to with new balls. And think carefully - you sometimes have to do slightly strange things to get to the right places...

i have balls 1 2 nd 4, but not 3
i am so stuck

ok to get the 6th ball u need the 3rd

Huh how did you get ball two or 4 i could olny get ball 3 and 5 can u get some help

Remember that you can always check the WaDF support forum when you're stuck!

Dear god was this a difficult game. I know it's game play is interesting and overall it's been put together quite well, but I can't get past how utterly hair-graying it was.

For me it was 5 minutes of gameplay crammed into 18 hours of doing the Exact Same Things over and over until they worked by random chance.

Now I admit that I like Cave Story, even though it's about as difficult, but it has so much story and so much more to see and do when you're not trying to jump onto a platform without getting killed for an hour straight.

All in all, this game feels like it was too short and easy originally, so the developer gave it a bunch of places that requite one-in-a-billion-moves to make it longer. Not my idea of a really good game. A shame, since it's quite well put together and polished up from a development point of view. And it really does have a method of play that's pretty uncommon.

Grr....I'm so close, but I can't get past that tiger that sucks everything in. I assume I have to use that crappy orange ball, because it has -powers, but whatever I try won't let me get that ball into his lair. I think i've tried all possible passageways...any advice?

geekazoid - Ball 2 is the easiest to get. Go as far to the east (right) as you possibly can with ball one. A porcupine gives it to you.

Where did you get 3 and 5?

ok, thanks everyone. i have no idea what to do next then (i have the first eight balls.)

HELP! I've got balls 1-6, and I can't find anywhere else to go.

Mordecai

you have to go up top on the brown part until you get to the very edge, and then switch to ball seven and go back left a bit (over the fire pits.. it's kind of tricky) and down. but don't do it until you have all the balls, as i learned the hard way.

argh, ok i'm stuck on shadowlands. i took the very first right but now i'm just going in circles and can't find a way out.

sarah:

try going down in the most left hole on the eastern side of pinewood heights. (where the yellow cat sits) (the hole with the lava blowing you up). then go to the right, with ball 8 you can now make the two jumps needed to get to the next level at the bottom right (which is a pretty hard level by the way)

#6-Yoga Ball

Ljux / Utopioca. Use the Iron Ball to pass through the windy cave on the mountain's west side.

#7-Pathetic Ball

Crystal Path. Use the Yoga Ball to reach the opening two screens west of the Eastern Side save point.

#8-Jump Ball

"Secrets Levels.exe"?

Search the Harara Mountains and the Shadowlands for two four-digit combinations. By now, you'll know where to input them.

i'm stuck in the crystal path

i'm all the way at the end with the three blue circles
and then i'm stuck :p

Bart: Find your way to the spot where the 4 corridors dead-end. In fact, it is not a dead end. Approach the intersection from the right. Run straight at the wall. You will go straight through.

An explanation of what the balls do:
1.

Normal ball: Does nothing. It has a low jump height, and it falls slowly. Sometimes those can be useful.

2.

Pink ball: Bounces higher than the normal ball, but you use it in the same way. Get used to how it moves; you'll use it a lot.

3.

Lead Ball: If you see a crumbling piece of ground, jump on it with this and you'll fall through. It is also very wind-resistant, although very strong fans will still affect it.

4.

Speed Ball: Even faster, bouncier, and more uncontrollable than the pink ball. Use it a lot, but be quick with the A button when you need to slow down.

5.

Glass Ball: Very hard to use, so only use it when you have to. You can jump like the Speed Ball, and move even faster, but it you hit something to hard you'll break. You are also immune to lasers, but not electricity or guns. Note that if you bounce to your max height, you'll break when you come back down, so plan your jumps carefully.

6.

Yoga Ball: Moves kinda slowly, but has better jumping power than the Speed Ball. Seems to be slightly wind-resistant. Use it for big jumps, but if you just need to go really fast, use the Speed Ball.

7.

Pathetic Ball: The name says it all . It moves like a slug and jumps like one too. It's not even very tasty!

8.

Rubber Ball: King of jumping, capable of taking you to the highest platforms. Very fast as well. If you can control it, it's a hands-down winner.

9.

Cold Ball: This ball was created for one reason: To reach the future. It can use the time machine and survive in the future. It bounces a little worse than the Speed Ball. You'll use it once in the future and never again.

10.

Ascent Ball: This ball can fly. 'Nuff said. Use it a lot, but most areas after when you get this will cramp your style by requiring a specific ball.

ugh, the controls on the flying ball are impossible. it's kind of ruining the whole game for me and i may not even be able to finish. they should take a cue from ball revamped (love that game.)

HOW do you do the spider thing
im still so confused
i need a total walkthrough on that level
i just dont get it

hi, don't know why but i played it the first time, then i saved, when i tried to start the .exe again it says "cannot load changeanim.cox. This object might need an external program or library not yet installed."

what am i to do?

alright, i put in the four digit code (and one of the hidden game ones.. maybe i'll do the other one later) and some lights started flashing but that's it. is that the end? i'm almost afraid to hit esc.

gaef - on the spider thing

I don't remember the details, but you need to manipulate the Red and Blue Blocks by turning them on and off with good timing to get the spider down to the last room at the bottom, so that he can push the yellow button.

Watch how the spider moves and where he goes depending on where he drops when you make the blocks he's walking on disapear.

Anyone want to post a walktrhough on the Shadowlands?

ergggg...can't get past the Shadowlands!
spent hours on it...help?

help! i click on start game and it brings me to a picture of like buildings projected by a box machine thing and it doesnt go anywhere from there. whats wrong?

Here's a Shadowlands walkthrough:
(There are actually a few different routes through the place. If you're having a lot of trouble, you may want to try a different path and see if it works out!)

Start out with the blue ball (#1) and go two screens east. Go east again, but take the bottommost exit to avoid a crusher. Fall down and trigger the portal. While staying on the lower half of the screen, go two screens west. One of the blocks here will be transparent; fall through it to the next screen. Here, go east through the transparent blocks (don't fall in that gap or you'll be crushed!), then fall down.

You'll see a fireball fly off. You want to catch it, but you'll need a faster ball, so exit west to a convenient portal and switch to the rubber ball (#8). Move back east, then up and east. The fireball will fly to another screen--chase it from screen to screen until you intercept it in its travels. You'll explode, but will respawn at a new portal.

Take the rubber ball again and move east. Those rectangular platforms you see will disappear when you get close, so don't bother trying to land on them; rather, find the new platforms that appear when you approach them and land on those. Climb all the way to the top--there's a tricky jump near the summit--and trigger the portal.

Pick the yoga ball (#6) and remain still, letting the ball just bounce. (Don't hold A or S.) When the ball is moving upward, press and hold the right arrow key and you should make it through the windy room to the east. (This could take a few tries.) Continue east through the mouth all the way to the Cold Ball.

Jenn: That's the intro. Just watch and listen to the storyline.

Anyone tried the challenges on the forums? Some of those people can do ridiculous moves. I liked the challenge of getting to the top of the tower with just the blue ball.

i have 1-5 and i am stuck, i know you have to use the lead/iron ball to get on the platform thats blocked by the downdraft, but i cant get the ball high enough
i think you have to use the platform to the top right of that screen

i have 1-5, i am so stuck
read my last reply and find out stuff
i need help
i can get to utiopicaor whatever but i think i need ball 6 to beat it
but i dont have ball 6!

I'm stuck in utopioca. I bounce between purple and red lines, and I don't know where to find an exit. There doesn't seem to be any ! It's strange, the previous screen (with colored lines too) was quite evident... help !

For Utopioca, different balls are stopped by different colour lines.

piou23: Try using different balls. Each type reacts differently with the lines.

For example, the iron ball and the gray blocks are the only way to exit the room from the upper right hand corner.

I hope this helps!

How do I get the 7th ball into the tiger place?

uhhh... i feel stupid, but i got all the balls but i cant figure out what to do
any help?

wait, nvm, i just figure it out....
...now i really feel stupid

Thanks Fishybobbins and Numair's Angel.
In fact my problem was that I didn't know you could suicide yourself by pressing SPACE, and thus change the ball. Without that trick, I had to restart all the game every time :( Now I'm in Wallace & Gromit's paradise, a world full of cheese :p

Oh man... I can't get it to play...
It looks awsome...

YAHOO!!! I just did a speedrun! 1 hour, 20 minutes. Of course, it's a far cry from the 15-20 minute runs on the high scores. I blame the fact that I'm not used to Hard Mode physics. (which are mandatory for speedruns).

i loved this game! the soundtrack wasn't in any moment irritating, actually.. it was quite nice!
very adictive.. but i think the graphics could be more appealing, but its nice too.
btw...

put 6910 on the final sequence to unlock one of the secret games, (a scrab showed to me on shadowland.. lol) and i belive the numbers on the stars, someone mentioned, is of the same purpose

OMG! ANOTHER WINSDOWS GAME!
seriously jay. its not fair. u give such great reviews of games and then i can't play them with my linux box. argghh...
well, u can't have everything. i can't believe that wine can't run it. sigh.

I hear you, man. I do prefer my Mac, although I also have a Windows box so I don't miss all the excellent games available exclusively for that platform.

By the way, isn't your Linux box capable of running Windows in a dual boot configuration?

okay,
I've got balls 1-5, and I know you need to go to utopica, but I can't get the iron ball on that platform
any help?

I argree, this was a great game to find. The music was soothing and the background was amazing and artistically stimulating. I say this 'cause I beat the game. Hehehe.
Not going to try the secret levels though.
I think the number input process is just too tidious. At least for me anyway. =)

Great game. And not really that frustrating and hard as some people say.

Btw, was anybody else reminded of Cauldron 2 for Commodore 64? That game had pretty much the same control scheme. Also, THAT was a punishing game, even with infinite lives cheat I couldn't finish more then 10% of it.

I digged this game, and beat it on normal difficulty, with a little spoilery help, but for some reason the sound effects didn't work for me. The music did, but of the "different and wholly appropriate bouncing" sounds, nada. Which is a pity, because I'm curious what some of those balls sound like.

pointyclick :

go to the east of the map, and climb to the top of the mountain (the one with a wind-blown cave). Before encountering lava, you'll find a save point. Change ball here and take the iron ball. Now you can enter the cave, the wind won't be a problem anymore. Drop into the shaft, you'll have to break a wood bridge to enter utopioca (well i remember the journey was a bit long to utopioca)

HELP AGAIN! I've got all 10 balls, and got to Dr Cliche's underwater lab. I've turned on those 4 things that show a 0 when you go on then, and I can get to the room that has the 4 numbers, but what do I do now?

AlexJ--

The 4 numbers are the code you have to input on those little lights that say "0". The number will change depending on which ball you activate it with (using the blue ball with make it a "1," etc), so you have to reach the lights with certain balls to input the code.

i cant save the game. whenever i return i have to start from the beginning... i scream

i got 4 balls and did the freaky ufo now three times .. if i have to do it fourth, plz help me what i can do

quote jay:

I hear you, man. I do prefer my Mac, although I also have a Windows box so I don't miss all the excellent games available exclusively for that platform.

By the way, isn't your Linux box capable of running Windows in a dual boot configuration?

Answer:
I do have a dual-boot, but it stinks when you have to reboot all the time. no fun at all-taking a break from work and playing agame means rebooting. Plus i hate windows.

but all is well! i tweaked the wine windows emulator and I can now play this game perfectly on linux! hooray!

i cant get the secret levels unlocked, i know how to get to them, its not in the game, i made it to the end of the thing in harara mountains with the red squares, but now what do i do,

i found the code

3680

hey guys, im loving this game, but im stuck in the 3rd screen down of the crystal path where theres a laser blocking my way. I know the glass ball goes though the lasers...but then its too far down so you get shattered. Can you help?
cheers guys
peace

ok i fixed the last problem, just some jumping around did it
but now im stuck on crystal path again, theres this bit ive got to with 3 blue circle things, and i cant go anywhere else i dont think...help aaah
worlds most infuriating game definitley!

How do you pause a speedrun?

sheesh. finally beat it.

I was a little disappointed on the hardness of the last level. the crystal path was harder to figure out, and the utopioca.

how do you get the secret games, i have the numbers, now what

Everyone says the yoga ball has the best jumping power, but time and time again, ite been ball #4 for me, is there something im not doing?

dirtychinchilla

have you found the part where the four paths meet? go left there, through the wall.

jay, have you seen the #modarchive games by the same creator? i desperately need a walkthrough for the second one and i can't find one anywhere on the internet. :P

Again, does anybody know how to pause the speedrun and whether the time still ticks while the ball selection screen is on?

Imagine how infuriating it is when you speedrun for half an hour and are right near the end and the da*n phone rings and you do not know the correct way to pause the game, if any.

AHH, think of where you've entered a code before. Don't worry if you have a short term memory, you should know where it is ;D
(if you've beatent the game that is....)

Just finished it. What an awesome game, with awesome ideas. I particularly liked the Utopioca level, and the final one... although crystal path could have been replaced and I wouldn't have missed much

Please stop with the downloadable games...or as Brian mentioned in the first comment start a new section for it. I love the site but I am not willing to slow down my computer even more by downloading a bunch of games. Sorry for the critism...I will end on a positive note. Everything else is superb! Keep up the good work haha.

HELP!

I've got balls 1-9 and I don't know where to go. Where is this underwater lab or whatever?

i have balls 1-6 but i can't do the lunar level. i have no idea where to go. i've gone as high and as far west as i can. am i supposed to west at the bottom?
i'm also stuck on the crystal palace. you have to use the glass ball for the laswer but how? - it constantly breaks!
please help

Dear All,

I have all 10 balls, and I'm on the underwater Dr. Cliche's lab area. If anyone is stuck on something before that, and they've read the above 90 or so comments and can't figure it out, you can e-mail me, I guess. It's goyston [at] gmail dot com. Please don't spam me.

This is an incredible game. It makes me miss the good old days of Nintendo when games were simple and yet so entertaining. For some reason this one really makes me think of megaman.

the_garden_fairy: Crystal Palace is maddening. All it takes is a lot of patience. If you're stuck on a section, give it 10 or 20 tries, then walk away for a while. It really is much easier to do when you're not frustrated and can be more relaxed about it. There does seem to be a few different routes through the level, so if you really can't do it, try a different way.

Can anybody give the two 4-digit codes? I found them both in the game but didn't bother to write them down at the time.

ok, I must have missed something... I put in the code for the secret level, but it the teleporter didn't do anything. It just said "secret level unlocked." How do I get into the secret level?

thanks keith for your help on the crystal palace. finally got through but i am seriously stuck on the lunar cheese factory level or whatever it is called. is there some kind of trick to get passed the fan on the very far left so that you can then go underground because i have tried using balls 1-7 and i cannot get passed it.

please help!

also kevin: i don't know about the secret levels because i haven't got there yet, but there are two games in the "within a deep forest" file that you download. maybe you enter the secret level through the other game...?

the garden fairy:

possible spoilers...

ball six will do everything in the lunar world. for the fan, i assume you mean the fan blocking the small horizontal corridor, just get alllll the way back on the screen to the right, and keep on pushing.
and the other executable installed accesses the minigames. i'm not sure how the trigger works, but once you enter both of the two codes in the final stage, the games become unlocked.

to the guys at jig:

i love what you are doing here, and my only wish is you could find more games like cave story and within a deep forest! they keep my attention focused for a few days, rather than a few minutes like most of the other games here...

>All in all, this game feels like it was too short and easy originally, so the developer gave it a bunch of places that requite one-in-a-billion-moves to make it longer.

Actually, it's the other way around. Orginally, only the hard mode existed, and it was about twice as sadistic. Then I decided to add the new "Easy" mode so normal people could play the game :) I actually never intended things to be so hard, it's just that when you create a game, you spend so much time playing it that you get very good at it. At that point, it becomes very hard to understand how most people will play it.

But I guess different players are different too - I never thought Cave Story was that hard at all.

i got balls 1-5 and im stuck i dont know what to do next.....i need some help please.....what do i do after i get the glass ball???

heh-i feel realy stupid but i dont seem to be able to find the 2 ball.i found an underground tunnel but i cant get past the lava coz the walls to tall and if i just go right above ground i get eaten by spikes!

Everyone has been talking as if there are only two secret games to unlock, but it says there are three, if you open the "Secret Games" file.
Where's the third code? I can't find it anywhere!

On another note, great site Jay! I love it!

O.o Never mind... it appears that the third secret has magically opened on its own...

The latest update of the game gives you a third secret level. You simply need to have both of the others unlocked for it to be unlocked.

going....insane.....need....help...on....the....future....level...need...10th....ball...........................

Future Level is easy. From the west end, go east. Up the mountain, drop down to where the east exit would be. Cold ball does not break like the glass ball. Continue to the screen where you got ball 2 . . . then bounce on the ice several screens further. The dragon is gone. The king teleports you back to the past. Go one or two screens east . . . there is the king, alive, and able to give you the power.

i need help in underwater lvl. what happens when you get all the 4 numbers lit up at 0 neer the begining. i have them lit up all to 0 now what?

I see some people are having save problems or are pissed about not being able to obtain certain balls. So...

If you need a certain ball...

Then open up the savegame.ini in your "Within A Deep Forest" folder, and type in the following things.

Pink Ball:

HasNormalBall=1

Speed Ball:

HasSpeedBall=1

Iron Ball:

HasIronBall=1

Glass Ball:

HasGlassBall=1

Yoga Ball:

HasYogaBall=1

Pathetic Ball:

HasPatheticBall=1

Rubber Ball:

HasJumpBall=1

Cold Ball:

HasFreezeBall=1

...and last but not least, the Flying Ball:

HasFreeBall=1

Can anyone tell me...

...What code I'm supposed to input in the Underwater Lab? AND HOW ON EARTH I'M SUPPOSED TO GET THE BALLS THAT ARN'T THE FLYING BALL THERE?

Nevermind, I got to the

Underwater Lab

and I have all the balls and the codes
Now my problem is getting the Pathetic Ball into the

Underwater Lab

I somehow mananged to do it before, and now I have lost the ability. Oh well, more time to consult the walkthroughs to find out how to get the Pathetic Ball to the pipe it need to go in.

Did you guys play the secret games? I love the third one, though it doesn't make much sense to me. Is there a point to it other than exploring the beautiful scenes?

Not really :) It's just a place where you can see Sara Sandberg's creatuers that didn't make it into the main game.

Help! I'm soo stuck on the Crystal Path! I can't figure out how to get the

lasers to stop lasing!

I must really suck =P

Woohoooo I finally beat Crystal Path! What a super hard level sheesh =S That was the last ball I needed, off to beat the game now yay!

Just putting this out there, but if youre really stuck, there's a walk-through at the WaDF site...

just FYI

I've almost beaten the game, I just have to start playing it again. Fantastic game. Utterly amazing. Great idea, great gameplay, just great!

What exactly is the main difference between 'normal' and 'hard'? Someone mentioned physics, but I find that for me, 'hard' is actually easier! Hmmm.

WOOHOO!!!! I beat the game!!! Take that, Dr. Cliche! Now, to find the secret code in the shadowlands I cannot find...and to input both codes to unlock the secret levels. Great game, along with Knytt. Nifflas sure knows how to think outside the box...and turn those thoughts into incredible games.

didn't anybody notice Knytt's family at the beginning of the game?

If anyone's interested, I've beat the game. E-mail me if you need help. And what a fantastic game it is.

THIS GAME IS GOING TO MAKE ME NOT GET INTO COLLEGE OK

I'm really stuck. I'm in Utopica at the part where the floors are invisible and you get vaporized. Does anyone have any tips?

Help!Can someone tell me how to get ball #3? I know its on the western side of pinewood, but i canna find the tower!

@Max G You know the screen right before the fire breathing snake (coming from the west). That big stone thing with the suspiciously prominant blocks...that's the tower :D

Errr...no.

Actually, I think I know where it is. Are the blocks in the background?

Found it!

Wow, the audio quality in this game is simply astounding. Makes me think of what it would sound like if whoever does the music for Hayao Miyazaki's movies teamed up with Nobuo Uematsu. This is one of the best DLs I've found on this site. Granted I've only DLed Rooms and NetHack...

I have a big problem, at the end when you have all the 10 balls and have to get past some tiger or something at the other side of the lake but I don't know how

Dang I have 1-7 but....

How can I get the Yoga Ball into the Lunar Cheese Factory? It doesn't bounce high enough!

i have 1-7 ball, but how i get the 8-9-10 balls?
and where is the Lunar Cheese Factory??
please answer fast!!!!

@yaniv

If I remember correctly, the 'yoga' ball is number 7, so go to the far left of the main area and use the yoga ball to bounce way up high till you get to that teleporter with the image of the iguana dude that gave you the yoga ball, activate the teleporter and go through it to arrive in hell...for lactose intolerant people :o

Beat it. AMAZING game, great find.

download now.

to get to the transporter that takes you to the lunar cheese factory use ball 4 then bounce above the teleporter and you will see a save point, here change to yoga ball then activate the transporter thingy and your done.

HOW do you do the cheese level? I NEED (need) a total walk through.

For the invisible plat-forms just look at the back round it is reversed. ex. :)=(: on the level.
For Nicole.

I need help getting through the room with the lasers. I got past the first room with the laser at the bottem but the next room with the four lasers i keep dieing. (I am past the tiger, and under water) Thank you.

does anyone have an idea as to how i can get the soundtrack for this game?

that would be sooo cool, listening to the music while jogging or before sleeping.

Please please pleeeeeease, I can't get through Crystal Path!

How do I turn off those lasers? Is there any ball I can use to get through them? (besides Glass Ball)

Nevermind =P I got it!

I beat the game, but I'm having serious trouble entering the 4 digit combinations. Specifiacally, the room with the lasers that turn on and off. By the way, I've noticed some weird stuff:
1. The glass ball doesn't break if it hits spikes. You know that really long jump at the right edge of pinewood heights? If you use the glass ball and land on the hedgehog's spikes, it doesn't break.
2.The easiest way to beat that hover thing(the level on top of the pillars)is to get the glass ball first, and use it for the right side and ball 2 for the left side. With the glass ball, you can not only go right through lasers but also the guns and multicolored floors/ceilings in that hover thing. In fact, I used the glass ball for about 3/4 of Ljus too.

I fell so STUPID!
I just started this game and I can not figure out were to go. I visited the all-knowing bunny in her house, but then where. I went up this moutain only to find an impossible lava pit. Then i jumped of the moutain all the way to the climbing wall but after so far you can't go any higher. I see a door but I can't reach it. Where do i go?

NEVERMIND
I gave a comment that i needed help but I figured it out, sorry.

how do you get to a secert lvl?

This is a really old review, but I've been getting pretty into this game recently, and a search on Google Video shows this amazing 21 minute speed run. Thought you might want to check it out.

21:59.08 Speed Run

HAPPY DAPPY:
Use the green ball to jump to the highest platform you can reach. There is a save point. Then jump down with the Yoga Ball. When you hit the light below it should turn purlple. this will activiate the circle-thing. Just jump into it.
HOPE THIS HELPS

GETTING PAST THE CAT CREATURE:
One screen over from the (west?) savepoint there is a cat who sucks in anything to eat it.

Just jump down as the pathetic ball. He dosen't like the taste

HELP!!! I can't get the pathetic ball to jump high enough to get to the pit!!!

@Sarah This should help you:

You need to come from above. Go up the mountain with some lava pits and spikes (best with Yoga Ball). At the top and far right of the mountain, chage to pathetic Ball and go left, falling down a hole ( even more lava ). After that you can drop near the Sucking-Cat-Pit

Where do you go to get the code for the other secret levels in Shadowlands?

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

sorry about the caps, i get really excited. I played this game about 6 months ago, and promptly forgot the name...thankyou for putting this on here, i'm gonna lose about another 3 days now...:D

I hope this yoga ball is worth it. this level is soooo much harder than i remember...stupid glass ball...

*grumbles*

finally! finished it..with a little help of course. But only a little. thanks again :-)

how do you get to the game?

In the top left how do you get the yoga ball to bounce to the yoga symbol?

i don't think the blue ball likes cheese :D

Could anyone post a list of the balls and their effects(in spoiler format)? Thanks!

Within A Deep Forest Fanatic

PLEASE HELP ME! the newest version of this game (1.1.4) is only available in a .zip format, so when i opened it in win rar, i couldn't use the save feature! HELP!

oooh wait i got it! hooray save works! if anyone had this same problem heres what you do

1.Right click the zip file

2. go to open with-then something like zipped folder (its icon is a folder with a zipper on it)

3.select everything in that folder

4. when everything is selected right one of the files (it doesn't matter which one) and choose extract

5. choose the folder you want the game to be saved in, then click next NOTE: while its extracting, and that bar is still filling up, don't push next, or your computer will freeze up of at least mine did.

now open up the folder you saved it in, and choose the file with a moon for an icon.

This is such a great game! (indeed, cute but evil)

I finally managed to finish the game... It took me three days. I really had trouble at the underwater lvl, especially with

the part where there were two criss-crossing lasers moving back and forth, yeah, that one was EVIL

Bouncy Ball:
According to my knowledge after finishing the game -

#1- the blue ball you start with

This ball is usually the easiest to control because it doesn't jump too high and it is of normal speed. It doesn't have any special abilities.

#2- Pink Ball

This ball jumps a bit higher than the blue ball, but is harder to control. It doesn't really have a special ability.

#3- Iron Ball

This ball has the heaviest weight, therefore it jumps lower. Winds don't have a lot of effect on iron ball, so to pass strong winds, it is usually better to choose iron ball.

#4- Speed Ball

This ball jumps higher than the pink ball, and has more speed. It doesn't have any special effect but the ability to jump high and move quickly.

#5- Glass Ball

This ball material is the lightest, but also the most fragile. You can destroy yourself if you fall from an altitude that's too high. The good thing about glass ball is that it is the only material capable of getting through laser beams without being destroyed.

#6- Yoga Ball

Yoga ball jumps higher than pink ball and slightly lower than speed ball. This ball is vital in order to open the portal to the Lunar Cheese Factory level.

#7- Pathetic Ball

This ball has the least power... It jumps the lowest. But surprisingly, this ball does have a use.

Remember the tiger that devours everything? Well, to get past the tiger you'll need this ball material.

#8- Rubber Ball

This ball jumps the highest among all the others. (well except for the Flying Ball which could fly even higher)

It can be used to reach the top of the sky in Harara Mountains, where you can discover the code to unlock one of the secret levels.

#9- Cold Ball

You need this ball in order to get to the time machine and go to the future. It is the only ball material that can survive low temperatures.

#0- Flying Ball

This ball can jump as high as the speed ball, and can fly to any altitude if you use the "↑" key.

what is the third code for the secret game?

how do you put the code in the savegame file?

i know if you add "Square=3680" you'll get the square game

How do you get to the dog in the tower?

@nicole

somewhere on the screen is a picture of where to go. for example, the first time this happens with the red rectangle thing, on the opposite side of the screen, there is an identical blue box with a mirror of what you need to do.

Get all balls the easy cheating way:

If you've saved the game a least once you'll see that there is a file called "savegame.ini" in the root directory of the game. So lets make some changes :p
If you don't have all balls they'll won't mention it so to add them place this in the file:
HasPracticeBall=1
HasNormalBall=1
HasIronBall=1
HasSpeedBall=1
HasGlassBall=1
HasFreezeBall=1
HasFreeBall=1
HasPatheticBall=1
HasJumpBall=1
HasYogaBall=1
You can always delete the balls by just removing the line or turning the true value (1) into a false value (0)

I am really stuck in Utopioca Minor! I get to the level with the small green bird, that tells me something about a path in the Shadowlands. but I cant find the exit of that level! I tried it at least 100x but everytime I just hit those obstacles and have to start from the beginning. Please help me!

Hey people, I'm stuck in Shadow Lands and don't get the cold ball. I guess I don't understand the description on top of this thread correctly. I use the jump ball (8) and I made it to the "room" where this red light is flying away when you come too close to it, but I don't know where to go now. I appreciate any help from you.

It's not as hard as the reviewer says, if you pay attention to the physics. Only a couple of parts had me humming peaceful songs to keep from smashing my speakers into the monitor.

Hey, I'm in the underwater place. I'm at the las place with the criss-crossing lasers. I get passed them but the tunnel going into the roof doesn't go anywhere.

Dedo, there is another tunnel in this screen

it's on the right, in about the middle of the screen

I just downloaded this game this weekend, I wished i would have gone outside, but it was a great game. I really enjoyed the world design, the puzzles, the progression, the gameplay. Good amount of difficulty without being impossible.

MaJ, I had a lot of trouble with this one too:

you have to touch the red light, so scare it in a way you know where it will go and chase it like mad. It will kill you, but you will be allowed to regenerate opn the pad to the lower right of that room.

JanW, I can help, but I'm not sure what you are talking about. Sounds like a room you don't actually get a ball in, but just need to escape out of. Do you remember what the bird says? What door do you go into to talk to that bird?

are there any other secret codes besides 3680? if so what are they?

I think that once I beat it, I'm going to go back and screenshot it to make a map.

Hi,

as you probably know, when you

add Square=3680 to the [Secrets] section

you get access to the first secret level

Does anyone know what should I add to play other secret minigames?

coming back to this game, i have to say that the single most unfair, unwonderful frustrating part of the entire frustrating but wonderful thing is getting the

lame ball down the tunnel. the underwater level is really hard, but getting that dumb ball across those dumb lava pits is nerve-wracking even after finishing the game a couple of times.

hey im stuck on the other side of the lake i have the flying ball but the dragon blocks me from getting back im totally screwd!

oh nevermind about the top one now i need help with something i dont have time for:
the underwater lab code

im too lazy to try and guess the code while dieing over and over again

can someone help me please.

never mind again
i beat it

um.. this makes me feel really stupid asking this...... but.... um.... when I loaded it I got code. How do I make the game play from this?
Please someone tell me. Thanks!!

oh dont worry... after I posted I read Jakes "walkthough"... so this and my last message can be deleted.... Ill make sure I carefully read the comments next time...

hey Suluu, for the second and third game type:

Balloon=6910

Frank, I think the other code is

6910

where do i type in the code for the extra levels

how large is the file? I've been downloading for four hours now, with under 17 MB to show for it!! ugh
do I have hope of the download finishing before the apocolypse?

The most frustrating game ever!!!! :(~~~
But still playing

TWo things one this looks like bugbug escape from sky tower I think thats what its called and two I cant play is it compatible with vista

How do you get Pathetic Ball?? I've gone just about everywhere!!

And this is text you should input in your savegame.ini file if you want to get it easy:

[Slot 1]
GameInProgress=Yes
EasyMode=1
Entrance=1
HasPracticeBall=1
HasNormalBall=1
HasIronBall=1
HasGlassBall=1
HasSpeedBall=1
[Slot 2]

2 Debbie Allee:

Pathetic ball is in the Crystal Path. Two screens to the left from enter of Eastern Side. There is a squirell. Wind blows straight down. You can use the Rubber Ball (8), Yoga Ball (6) or Free Ball (0) to get there.

This game is actually off a mobile phone which I have.
The game's called Bob's Journey and the phone its on is a sidekick slide.
Very addictive game!
I'm glad to find it online!

I found a big glitch, at least from a continuity perspective. So, the future level is cold because in the past you never stopped Dr.Cliche, right? Therefore, after you finish the game, i.e., disable the "world-freezing ice-bomb," the future should be sunny and just like the past. But if, after you win the game, you go back to the future, it's still icy. That disappointed me, I was hoping that the king would still be alive in this future, or that the big plant that eats you east of the king would be gone, but you can't get there because the free ball would die.

I really enjoyed this. The whole strategy of the different ball types was really, really fun. The game was really easy to pick up, and the difficulty curve was great. While I'm not saying it was by any means easy... It would have been nice if it was longer. Or if users could create levels like in Knytt Stories. Once you've finished it, there's really virtually nothing left to do. For a game this deep, it might be nice if there was something more. While I realise length isn't typically a characteristic of casual games, it just would have been nice.

But, silly little complaints aside: I. Loved. this. Game.

Awesome game, didn't take long to beat though. My favorite ball is the yoga ball.

I am really stuck on Crystal Path. I go down the path going down from the creature that shoots fire at you. Then, I change to the Glass Ball and go to the next frame down. This is where I get stuck. Am I seriously supposed to go down this or am I missing something? I've looked everywhere. Please help!

Please help!
1. I cannot get through the crystal path! I am at one part, and there are two ways to go, and BOTH lead to dead ends!
2. Where is the savegame.ini file where you input the cheats?

It's early 2009 and I'm still charmed by this lovely, perfect little game. Since my system went to Data Heaven last month, I had to re-find it and re-download it.

No problems there (love your search-feature, Jay). But now that it's up, I can't get it to go fullscreen at all. Is this a glitch, or do I just remember it incorrectly and it's only available in window mode?

BTW, I need to ask about iWin games and a BFG coupon I've been given. What's the best address to write you privately, Jay? I don't want to take up huge space in the comments areas.

Thank you. :)

AARGH! The Power of Posting strikes again.

My keyboard's F1 key wasn't working. Thought to try a new keyboard AFTER posting, and fullscreen now works fine.

Never fails!

use the search function, it's alot easier.

on windows it should be ctrl - f.

Can someone help me with the future because I can't get to the top of the mountain. plz?

This sounds pretty lame, but I need help.

The level crystal path is so hard.
Leave a comment telling me what to do, please.
Thanks.
