Presenting a compilation of ten upcoming smaller games that I'm eagerly anticipating. This diverse selection ranges from nearly AAA-quality to more quirky and experimental titles, showcasing the exciting variety we can expect in the gaming landscape of 2024. Whatever your preference in electronic entertainment, you're likely to find something intriguing among these titles.
Black Myth: Wukong
Among the games on this list, none have been awaited as long as Black Myth. Developed by Chinese studio Game Science, it exemplifies the flourishing Chinese indie scene. Drawing inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the game puts players in control of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, with superhuman powers akin to Superman. The combination of fast and fluid gameplay and visually impressive indie graphics makes Black Myth a highly anticipated action RPG.
Overboss
Overboss takes a different approach to strategy game design, simplifying and abstracting rules to emulate a board game. Developed by Tavrox and Brotherwise, players assume the role of a fiend striving to become the ultimate final boss. The game's simple surface rules involve drafting world tiles and monsters, strategically placing them on the board to earn points. Overboss offers an "easy to learn, hard to master" experience.
Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes
With a nod to the PSX era, Rabbit and Bear's upcoming RPG features mixed 2D/3D aesthetics and a vast story with a hundred recruitable characters. Set in the cosmopolitan continent of Allraan, the narrative revolves around a delicate balance of power disrupted by a groundbreaking discovery, leading to impending conflict. The two protagonists, from opposing sides, form an unlikely friendship, tested in the crucible of war.
Hades 2
Following the success of Hades, Supergiant Games introduces Hades 2. This sequel features Melinoe, the immortal princess of the underworld and sister of Zagreus, on a quest to find and defeat Kronos, the Greek god of time. Supergiant aims to build upon the success of the original game, promising improvements in every aspect.
Earthblade
From the creators of Celeste, EXOK Games presents Earthblade, transitioning into the metroidvania genre. Despite initial reservations, the studio's track record with Celeste instills confidence. Earthblade's focus on storytelling, combined with the genre shift and the studio's reputation, secures its place on the list.
Journey to the Planet Moolah
Invaders from the Planet Moolah achieved considerable success as a game initially developed by WMS Gaming and now maintained by Light & Wonder. The corporate umbrella now encompasses WMS, Bally, & Scientific Games.
Expanding on this triumph, Journey to the Planet Moolah introduces exciting new features to the brand. Similar to the original, it retains the cascading reels mechanic. Upon securing a winning combination on the five video reels, hovering spaceships above the playing field promptly beam up the victorious symbols, resulting in blank spaces. We would prefer to play online casinos that offer fast withdrawals most of the time though.
Laika: Aged Through Blood
Laika, a mother coyote warrior, embarks on a vengeance-filled journey in a Mad Max-inspired post-apocalyptic wasteland. Brainwash Gang transforms the Trials genre into a shooter with unique mechanics, encouraging tricks and presenting challenging difficulty. Laika promises an engaging story, hand-drawn aesthetics, and emotive music.
Axiom Verge (Recently Launched)
This list features several games that pay homage to cherished retro titles, blending nostalgia with modern innovations. Axiom Verge, a sprawling, nonlinear, sci-fi side-scroller, stands out as a prime example. Directly inspired by the Metroid franchise, its brilliant level design rivals that of Nintendo, and its genuinely otherworldly weapons and abilities intensify the isolating atmosphere of the game.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (Recently Launched)
While Koji Igarashi may not have created Castlevania, his influential work on Symphony of the Night and subsequent titles elevated the series to new heights. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, born from a Kickstarter project, promised an expansion of the gothic castle exploration and vampire-slaying formula. The finished product not only fulfills these promises but exceeds expectations, proving that the absence of the Belmont name is hardly noticed.
In closing, I hope you enjoy exploring these ten highly anticipated games of 2024. I endeavored to introduce titles not covered on my channel, and I'm content with the final selection. Let's look forward to another fantastic year for indie games in 2024!
