Professions have always been one of the best ways to earn gold in World of Warcraft. But somehow, primary professions always steal the spotlight, leaving secondary ones in the shadows. And that's a shame because they're still a solid way to snag some extra gold -- sometimes, quite a lot.
In this guide, we'll show you how to make gold using Cooking and Fishing in The War Within, covering the best farms and sharing tips to help you maximize your profits. And if you're looking for a headstart or a stress-free way to boost your gold reserves, you can always buy WoW gold from WowVendor and enjoy a nice custom package delivered straight to your character in just a few hours.
And now that the into's out of the way, let's make those secondary professions work for your wallet!
Steelscale Crushfish
This transmog item can be fished in Darkmoon Island, Northern Stranglethorn, and Wetlands. We personally recommend casting your line along the shoreline of Grom'gol Base Camp for the best results.
The Steelscale Crushfish is insanely valuable, with potential prices reaching up to 500,000 gold on the Auction House. Prices vary wildly across servers, reaching as little as 50,000 gold on low-pop ones, which makes this transmog an excellent flip. Just snipe it on a dead realm for cheap and resell it on a busier server for a nice profit.
Great Sea Ray
This BfA mount can net you a nice chunk of gold on the Auction House, particularly on NA realms. There are plenty of farming spots, but you don't need to go too far: Alliance players can settle down right in Tradewinds Market in Boralus Harbor, while Horde players can head a bit south of Dazar'alor and fish in the open water. As for drop rates, it's pure RNG. You might get the item after 1,000 casts -- or it could take as many as 15,000. But this mount is totally worth your time because it sells fast and can easily go for 200,000 gold and more.
Tome of Polymorph: Turtle
This cool Mage item lets you turn your enemies into turtles. Aside from the fun factor, it's also a real gold mine, selling for up to 600,000 coins on the Auction. You can fish for this tome in any school or pool in Cataclysm zones, especially along the river shores of Uldum, Twilight Highlands, and Tol Barad Peninsula. And the best part is that you don't even have to be a Mage to farm it!
Cooking
Just like Fishing, Cooking is often underestimated as a gold-making profession, while in fact, it can offer consistent sales and quite impressive gold per hour. However, to make profits, there are a few things you need to take care of first:
-Make sure to equip your profession gear. For Cooking, it's the Artisan Chef's Hat and Inscribed Rolling Pin. It'll be more effective if both tools are of blue quality, but if you don't have enough Acuity, green versions are also viable -- your profits just will be a bit lower.
-Install the CraftSim addon. This addon allows you to simulate crafts without actually spending materials and money. It calculates costs, predicts profits, highlights the most profitable recipes, and even tells you what reagents you're missing for the craft. You'll also need an Auction House addon like TSM or Auctionator to provide CraftSim with up-to-date pricing info.
The secret to making gold with Cooking essentially comes down to two things: maxing out your profession skill and using Finishing Reagents. Higher skill means you'll craft more items at once, and Finishing Reagents simply turn unprofitable recipes into gold-makers. For example, adding a Hot Honeycomb to a recipe can flip it from a loss to a nice profit. It doesn't always work like this, but more often than not, reagents really make the difference between losing money and earning big.
Basically, all you need to do is run CraftSim, scan for the most profitable recipes, and start mass-producing them. The addon is very easy to use and you'll likely manage everything intuitively, but in case you need help, there are plenty of guides that break down all of its functions in detail.
Below, we'll provide a basic setup and some steps to help you get started:
-Tick the Average Profit box on the addon's Control Panel to see the profitability of each craft in your recipe list.
-Tick the Recipe Scan box to open the Recipe Scan tab. Select your character and profession (in our case, Cooking, but others are available too). You can adjust the Scan Options to your liking, but make sure to enable Optimize Finishing Reagents so that profits are calculated with reagents included.
-Once the scan is complete, you'll see a list of all the recipes along with detailed information on how much gold you'll potentially make or lose from them. Hover over a recipe to check what materials are needed for the craft and what you might be missing.
-Sync with your Auction House addon by selecting it as Price Source in CraftSim's settings. If you're using Auctionator, don't forget to do full Auction House scans from time to time to update prices.
Keep in mind that the most profitable crafts depend on your server's market. For example, when we last ran a Recipe Scan, Zesty Nibblers and Salt Baked Seafood offered very good gains, but your results might be different. CraftSim will help you figure out what works best for your realm, so go ahead, run those scans, stock up on materials, and start turning your culinary skills into gold!
