Another weekend, another round of games! This edition features an accidental theme of retro-style games. Oops! Hope you're not mad at Weekend Download. Because if you are, you only get one hug from Weekend Download instead of two.
Kruunu (Windows, 6.1MB, free) - The legend claims there is a crown at the top of a tower, and whoever claims the crown will be ruler of the land. Time to do some climbing! This old school-styled platform adventure gives you the ability to jump and wall cling, then tosses you in the game with loads of things to avoid. Hop from wall to wall as you hit levers and avoid enemies, and once you reach the electric barrier, you'd better keep your speed on high, else you die. A superb game with a great visual style. Oh, and gotta love that background music!
Pixel Force: Halo (Windows, 13.5MB, free) - From Eric Ruth, who previously demade DJ Hero and Left 4 Dead into 8-bit games, comes a delightfully NES-styled sidescroller modeled after Halo. Pixel Force: Halo plays like an old school Contra game, handing you a few guns and a few power-ups to dispatch waves of enemies that bumble back and forth inside 2D stages. Everything eerily mirrors Halo: Combat Evolved, right down to the end of level bosses and events that occur in gameplay. A superb demake that will please anyone, not just Halo fans!
Anyman (Windows, 10.5MB, free) - A short but appropriately epic sidescrolling game of combat! Your goal is to defeat the minions of Dr. Alien, one at a time. Each has a special ability you must learn to avoid. Fortunately you've got a nifty jump ability along with a chargeable weapon. Avoid bad stuff, keep your mouse pointed towards the boss, and work to dispatch each as quickly as possible. Deliver the cube to the power plant and you'll win!
Note: All games have been confirmed to run under Windows 7 and are virus-free. Mac users should try Boot Camp, Parallels, or CrossOver Games to play Windows titles, Linux users can use Wine. If you know of a great game we should feature, use the Submit link above to send it in!
How do you jump in Kruunu?
In the readme.txt file, it says you move with the arrow keys and Z to jump.
While I'm sure Pixel Force: Halo will please the fans, it's not terrific as a game. The controls are confusing and not explained in-game (U, H and Space + WASD?). There's a perfectly good set of arrow keys on the keyboard! Don't reinvent the wheel unless you have to.
Also, it's difficult to kill an enemy without getting hit in the best of circumstances, in the vehicle sections it's even more difficult (I'm in a Warthog, a massive, tank-like dune buggy, yet I get hurt for running the enemy over?), and in some places (like the end of Mission 1, a very narrow corridor), it really is impossible. This game is hard, but not in a fair, fun way like VVVVVV.
Also enemies that respawn when they're a mere inch offscreen, so that the grenade launcher you just cleared out suddenly hits you smells like fake difficulty as well.
Kruunu is awesome.
I just finished the normal game, and began the Hell. Way more difficult.
Anyman is a fun, short game. It's a bit difficult to control both jumping and firing with the mouse though. Fortunately, with my laptop I could use the mouse to fire and the trackpad buttons to jump.
when i try to unzip kruunu, it gives me an error and says "unexepcted end of archive". anyone have a solution to this, as it would be greatly appreciated?
Was going to complain about Kruunu ending just as it was getting challenging and I
reached the crown but then I started playing hell
and then it got awesome.
Is anyone else having trouble downloading Kruunu? It seems as if firefox just cuts of my download at random points.
Krunuu download works sometimes - hit or miss. Just keep trying until you get it.
@ldop:
try using safari, chrome and firefox had issues for me, and safari worked.
I was REALLY hoping
for something more than credits for beating hell in Krunuu. Sigh. Was fun though.
My sis was watching Left 4 Speed 2 while I was playing. As soon as Ellis said "Hey look, lazur beems!" I was killed by the energy bar at the bottom of the screen.
So, I beat Kruunu. Wow.
IT WAS FRICKIN' HARD.
