TorkCan you torque the talk? In this unusual Flash adventure game from 2002, your spacecraft crash lands on an alien planet. To escape, you must observe the culture and learn a new language to communicate with the inhabitants of this alien world.

Tork is remarkable in its originality and design, as well as its gameplay. While the game is not very long, it may take a while to get a grasp of what to do. Observe what the natives are doing, and imitate them. Find the leader and ask for help. The cursor keys are used for moving, and the mouse can be used for selecting words to speak. There is a built-in hint system in case you get stuck.

Tork was created with high production values as evidenced by the art work, the soundtrack, and the easy-to-use communication interface. The art is true to the theme of the game, and reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss book. The sounds in the game are quite fitting to the environment.

Tork was produced by Nectarine and published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on their website as part of their Game On initiative.

Thanks to Steve for suggesting this excellent game.

I really enjoyed this game, So...

I made a map of it!

Map:

Enjoy!

Plot:

It's a mini-adventure game that sets you out on a quest. And as usual, you end up going on some mini side quests en route. Your main quest is to get your ship fixed. Meanwhile, you meet people and collect things, sometimes trade. Sometimes you need to trade A for B so that you can trade B for C. Almost nothing in the game is there for show. People are there either to learn from or to help out, sometimes both. And if you help them, they will help you.

That's a cool game.

hint:most of the words begin with the starting letter

Quite easy, but a fantastic gameplay. Fun ending with too :) Should be my favorite for the 2004 best game contest ;)

Reply

Whoa, great game. Loved the easy pace and the feeling you got when the whole language clicked. 'Z' on you!! (you'll get that last comment when ya play it)

Reply

Ok, I've done all the trading, got the dream to the ill fella then used the nightmare on the monster to save the kid, followed them to the king at the bottom and he says 'help' - now what?

Reply

Nice work, Alan. Remember back to the very beginning... maybe the King (I thought she was a Queen) can help you get your spaceship unstuck?

That is an excellent map, Elecricat! Nice job. Thanks!

Excellent game. One thing though- seems like there are ways to get "stuck". For instance, if you give away your Nightmare to one of the aliens (e.g. one of the fortune tellers), there doesn't seem to be a way to get it back. End of game...

stuck cant get king/queen to free my ship

Reply

Try talking to her [hint: it's one of the green ones].

I got my ship free, but never did learn what that spinning spiral was about.

I loved it! :)

k i got the dream and i know wat all the symbols i have mean, but i dont know waht comes next! maybe a hint? please :(

Reply

James - you need to give the dream to someone that needs it badly.

Reply

Thanks i understand now! What and awsome game! weird little man though.

Reply

im stuck lol how do i get money
ive cooked the food and got some berrys....

Reply

I agree with Beth.What now?

Reply

This has got to be my favorite game on this site, but why so short?
I only used cheat one or two times, "cook" really stumped me ^^;
A helpful hint to those who are stuck, keep exploring. You'll always find somewhere you haven't been before;D

Reply

hmmm... I can't get past the eye on the green cord thingy that blocks your path. I tried giving it a dream, but Instead it gave it to the alien that said 'help'. A bad dream, no that didn't work either. the alien just gives it back and the eye doesn't stop stalling you. I am sooo confused! (this is probably something really simple and i'll be embarrased once you tell me, but please tell me anyways.) :)

I liked this game alot. Just need a little help.

Reply

how to quit the vision door?

Reply

Jay, how do you get around to reading all of the posts for all of these games and respond to them, while still having time to eat and sleep?? And now I am even taking time away from you for writing this! Hahahaha... you must be very busy.

Oh and I liked tork alot. took me a bit to figure it all out though. It's fun.

Reply

Very cool game, but how do you actually pick up the berries so that you can swap etc?

Why is it that I can't access anything on the abc.net.au server? This is the fourth game now on that server that I just can't access. I can't even access the main page.

Reply

Can somebody please give me a hint on what to do with the petal?

Reply

ahah yay! this is one of the first adventure games i finished on my own without hints and cheats :)

okay .. CLICK SPOILER FOR MAJOR HELP!!!

berries -> food [cook] -> money -> petals -> dream machine -> dream
.
once you have dream, go back to that scary looking dr. seuss alien-looking character at the beginning. so go back to the area around your spaceship and you'll find him. give him the dream, and he'll give you a nightmare, and return to normal. give the nightmare to the eyebally thing that won't let you past, to rescue the little dr. seuss-like character. then follow the big and little dr seuss-like characters to the queen! try talking to the queen to figure it out ..

if you still can't figure it out, here's a MAJOR spoiler for the end part of the game!!

tell the queen to "follow" you by using the newest symbol given to you. make her follow you to the very beginning, to the spaceship! she will then fix your spaceship and ta dah! your home free!!! or are you? :)

oh .. by the way ..

you only need one berry to get one dream. i actually took like all the berries, but w/e! hahah

*******DON'T GIVE ANY OF YOUR ITEMS TO THOSE VISION CHARACTERS!!! THEY WON'T GIVE THEM BACK!!******

I WUV THIS GAME! For people who like this, you might also like Samorost and Samorost II (both on this site.) Anyone else have recommendations?

Reply

This is a really unique game! And I mean that in the good way, not what you say when you think something is weird. Its a really original idea! I loved it :)

Reply

I am desperate for recommendations, so anyone who liked Tork, please recommend a game! Thanks!

Reply

im stuck i have free those things and this queen sez help wat now

Reply

tork was great just finished it yewww!!!!

Reply

Well, I actually beat the game before I found it posted here, but this is great material anyway.

I have one question, though: What's all this talk of "dreams" and "nightmares?" I mean, I know what you're talking about, but how do you get that they're called "dreams" and "nightmares?"
Any idea what's supposed to be happening in that place where you get what you call "dreams?" I mean, maybe we're not supposed to understand it, but...

oh, and what does the first symbol mean, the "K" thing that makes the ill guy run away but all the other aliens zap you?

Reply

"K" is swear, you see that little red eyed guy covering his head and running away from you. Just finished tork.. hehehe big flashing 'E'.

Reply

OH! MY! GOD! That was the bestest game I have ever played, and I've played flOw! (my current favorite Spore-esque game untill Spore actually comes out) It was so fun needing to learn a new language, I've always wondered (like if I were somehow trapped in france or something) if I would be able to survive and learn at least a bit of communication skills and now I know! By the way, many many thanx go out to Electricat for their super helpful map. Yeah I'm a cheater, so shoot me =P

Reply

What a gem of a game! I highly recommend

by the way, Jay:

The image used for the game (showing you giving food to the furnace) is a spoiler...

coming from someone not so good at adventure games i found this one easy and a whole lot of fun for 20 minutes at home when i got bored. lol. good luck to anyone still playing - hint you really dont need the cheats just keep looking around.

Reply

How do you get money???

Reply

That was cute. The in game hints helped though. Hannah, you get the money by gived cooked food to one of the guards, at least thats who I think they are.

Another great find Jay

Reply

Unfortunately, the replay value is poor, since once you know how things work, the second play-through consists mainly of going through a lot of tedious trading, looking around for the same stuff... the wonder is kind of gone. Sadly, that's the way with many casual adventure games. That first play-through is the stuff of dreams, though, which is why it hurts that there's no replay value, since I really wanted more.

I love this game soooo much. It has got to be my favorite game... out of ALL the games I've played (and that's ALOT). That may sound exagerated but it's true. It kinda creates an atmosphere... and I love learning the language and unlocking places. I havent played it in a few years so im excited to play it as if new since I dont remember much :)

Great game - the whole concept of having to pick up the rudiments of a new language is unique and made for an excellent game.
Hope a part two is created relating to the Samorostian type ending...

Reply

Wow, that was great! Thanks for reviving it in the Vault! I only wish there had been a letter for "thank you", I felt so rude conducting my transactions without it.

Reply

Tork is no longer loading for me. I just get a black page. I don't know if it's because I changed from Windows to Linux. Seems weird that the ads before it play and not the game.

Anyway, I wanted to play it again. Great game. The first time playing it was the best. I was completely baffled at the start, it was really like being on another world.

[I'm not sure what happened, but I believe it's fixed now. Thanks for the note! -Jay]

Reply

Thanks Jay for fixing it.

In the meantime, I went and played the game on abc.net.au

Reply

Wow. This game was great! Took me forever to figure out what to do with the petal- I partially gave up and ran around telling people KKKK! - so I finally came here and read your walkthrough. :) Hey, why did you have to open the portals by saying "open petal"?

this is pretty much my favorite game--that isnt made by amanita design, of course. i really do wish they'd made another one. isnt it time yet?

Reply

Has this been featured in The Vault already? The gameplay is quite unique and it stands very well the test of time.

Reply

I love this game, except that occasionally your character gets stuck and can't move. There doesn't seem to be anything for that except restarting the game, so save often.

Hey, JIG team... this is probably my all-time favorite game. You should post a casual game competition along the same lines. Adventure/puzzle/language

You could also have a competition to make a sequel or something. I'd love to see you repost this game every so often. :D
