Thanks for the homepage clue. FB one was easy enough, but then I've got a thing for languages.
For everyone else:
It's a synonym thing again. "The X in the Y Z". The blanks should be easy enough to fill in with a bit of Googling. Just remember that the last word isn't Yahtzee's favorite - it's Indy's!
Anyways, it's the Twitter clue that's got me stumped today. Can anyone provide a helpful nudge?
Dear Fellow Commenters,
Normally I am all for hints and walkthroughs and such - I use them all the time (more than I care to admit!). However, this is a contest in which each of us is pitted directly against everyone else. By helping out participants who would not otherwise find the gems, every hint that is posted also directly hurts all those participants who are able to find those gems without the hints; in other words, it evens the playing field unfairly.
So please, hold back the hints for now and let the best casual gamer win! :)
I'm inclined to agree with him as well. The mature adult in me realizes that it sort of goes against the spirit of the contest...it's not much of a contest if everyone is guaranteed the same chance.
The spoiled child in me, however, would like the hints to continue because there are at least 2 gems that I would not have gotten otherwise. :)
And of course we're all for community participation here at JIG, in fact we encourage it and offer prizes for well-written hint-throughs and walkthroughs, so asking people not to post hints kind of goes against what we're all about.
But this isn't just a game that's potentially being spoiled by spoilers, it's others' chances at winning. So, please keep that in mind, everyone.
I'm glad the general reception to the contest has been more cooperative than competitive. It's supposed to be a fun event where you solve riddles and collect things, but I can see where some of you are coming from. A netbook is on the line, after all!
Think of it this way: single gems aren't worth an entry, they're 1/3 of one. Hints haven't been given for every single gem, so nobody can really "cheat" their way to a ton of additional contest entries. And the gems vanish after 24 hours, so hints after the fact are almost pointless. Besides, some people are terrible at riddles, shouldn't they get to enter, too?
I know there's some incentive to get _all_ the gems, but I'd like to think the satisfaction of solving riddles and finding gems is as much of a driving force as being entered to win a netbook. :-)
When I saw today's clue on the JIG page, the styling
namely, photorealistic setting with cute, cartoonish embellishments
I thought it must be
Samorost, or one of the similarly-styled games (like Haluz), especially since so many of the clues have pointed to old favorites (still waiting for a Hapland reference -- the game that first brought me to JIG)
but alas, I was totally wrong. Still trying to figure out the JIG clue for today. The other two came in instant flashes.
As to the question of hints and help. I think if the clue is sufficiently obscure, just another angle, it should be okay. That said, some of the hints have been way too obvious lately. Hints and help are part of JIG culture, and good ones are more fun than a simple solution, even for games with no contest at stake.
@shelagh: the only thing we haven't been consistent with is the time of day the hints and jewels change. And that is by design.
We purposely did not indicate a time of day the new hints would go up, because we wanted there to be a bit of randomness to it encouraging people to check the site several times throughout the day.
If the previous day's hints go up later in the day and the current day's hints go up earlier in the day then, yes, the previous day's hints (and jewels) could be up for less than 24 hours. That's just the way it works. It doesn't mean we have been inconsistent with our handling of the contest other than the time of day the hints and jewels change.
You'll just have to check the site several times throughout the day. ;)
FB clue's got me stumped today. A friend had some insight into the homepage clue, and I solved Twitter on my own.
Homepage Hint:
The one in the bottom left will only make sense if you get the connection between the other two.
Twitter Hint:
What kind of trees might need to cheer up? And what are they doing if they're just walking about aimlessly?
Oh no, I missed a few days, forgetting that the gems disappear after 24 hours! Oops. :(
I still solved some of them, but I have no colors because the gems were gone. Ah well. The fun is in the solving, right? Though I gotta admit, it's much more rewarding with a gem to prove you're right even when you know you're right anyway.
As for today, I got the other two, but I'm having trouble with the homepage clue...
Sorry for the double post, but I just realized why I missed them! The contest hint posts don't show up in my RSS feed even though all other game posts do!
I'm thinking the reason for that is because you don't want clues that will stay accessible, but isn't it enough to change the text of the post so it will at least show up to begin with, and then be edited to have no clue in it even though the post is still in the list after 24 hours? Please?
I can't for the life of me figure out the Facebook clue. Can anyone help me out?
Hint for the Homepage clue:
I'm still not sure about the bird, but he and the other two all have something in common. For the top picture, you should be focusing on Mr. Nicholson. As for the dog, what is that breed called again? He looks like the dog on that show Wishbone, doesn't he?
Hint for the Twitter clue:
What's the most sorrowful tree you can think of? And what do you do if you can't stay in one place?
I'm still stuck on the homepage one (getting really close, I can feel it!), but I solved both the Twitter and Facebook ones.
Facebook hint:
It's all about perception. A ledge with a view may be something different to a little blue truck than it may be to a person.
What can you look out of, and has a ledge? Something that you can put a minuscule car on?
I'm trying to only stick within the confines of the given clue. (Just breaking it into smaller bites.)
shadowmaat: You can send individual matches as you get them, but it'll be easier for us to tally if you wait until the contest is over. Plus, you'll feel more accomplished if you wait. :-)
curiousgeorgie: Hmm. Not sure about the RSS thing. Checking in to it. In the meantime, just know that JIG clues usually appear at noon EST.
The Twitter clue seemed to have an obvious answer, but when I went to that game, no gem was to be seen.
So, I searched and I searched and I tried various themes and subjects and words and plays-on-words, and still no gems found.
Frustrated, I went back to the drawing board. What had I missed? I restarted my search from the beginning, returning to the first game I thought of.
And there it was.
So my hint to everyone is this:
IF YOU HAVE A BAD INTERNET CONNECTION, MAKE SURE THE PAGE ACTUALLY FINISHED LOADING BEFORE YOU DETERMINE IF A GEM IS THERE OR NOT.
To Doctor?:
Sore wa seikai da yo. :3
As for the Facebook hint:
The hint refers to a song you might hear on a certain famous amusement park attraction. If you're familiar with the chained-up globe that Sonic CD takes place on, the answer would be a synonym with its name...if there were more than one of them, of course.
Having finally gotten the FB clue after all the helpful hints, I have to admit that was REALLY obtuse.
I kept thinking the clue was referring to something there had to be two of, i.e. "it's one of this thing except it has to be two by definition." Of course, I couldn't have been more wrong.
The other two I managed to get without any help at all.
Homepage was easy, Facebook was clever (I hate when I end up running around in circles only to discover the answer is a game I know and love), but Twitter's got me stumped. And I know I'm gonna be embarrassed when I finally figure it out.
Homepage Hint:
This one's easy, so I'll just point out that while the clue is two words as the hint indicates, they all appear in a single nine-letter chunk.
Facebook Hint:
It might also be a device for making U-boats.

They're not talking a Free Market here...
