It only really occurred to me, after seeing other people's solutions, that it would have been a lot easier if had I simply used a 12-step cycle rather than my 7-step cycle.

Haha, here's my Brimstone. Its...interesting. But I made it with a killer headache. =] Wanted to give 9 symbol cycles, but had issues due to the way the machine functions, so I had to turn it into 18 symbol cycles. Definitely NOT the most optimized, but I wanted to try to use the glyph of duplication in this one.

Worst part was timing the arm that brings it out of the binding glyph.
4 glyphs, 10 manipulators, 82 symbols, 96 cycles. Could shave a few cycles off by changing the timing on the last arm, but...it wouldn't be enough to matter.

Elegant machine style, though.

This one has 64 symbols and finishes in 33 cycles, so even if the above solution worked, this one would beat it.

Eariler I said that there was no solution to Gold with 4 symbols per manipulator. Somebody posted one. While the solution works, it wasn't exactly what I had in mind. I should have said that every manipulator had 4 symbols and was reset to its initial position every 4 cycles (the given solution, as well as utilising a small bug, didn't). This is what I was thinking of. Can anybody else show that this is impossible in Gold?

Wait. I just saw it said "Aqua Fortis" and not "Aqua Regia." It works then.

January 1, 2009 12:41 PM

Poker, 4 ticks through the system is impossible, since you need 5 mercuries for the gold.

This is by all I know the fastest possible solution for gold, it will produce a gold atom every 5 beats. (actually it are 10 beats in 2 parallel productions lines) So 4 is impossible, but 5 is close enough :-)

mago200, this is not the fastest possible solution to 3. This is e.g. faster (21 cycles).

I like however your goal of optimzing speed! (this is afaik also what industry production lines optimize most for, double speed is double effectiveness...)

Running on an 18 cycle, since I couldn't get gold and two silvers produced in sync any other way. Not the most elegant of solutions either, but it works.

I think the fastest possible time for level 3 (Cinnabar) is 17 cycles. My method uses parallel production methods, like the previous solution, but is a little faster. As an aside, I didn't plan for the compounds from both sides to wind up on the exact same spot, but it's a nice coincidence.

The last 4 lines are for this example only, so you can see how it works. Remove the last 4 lines to use this in the final solution.

The right side removes every 3rd mercury to prevent the 3rd silver from turning to gold. A bit of a hack, but it works quite smoothly. This side is also delayed by 9, so that the first silver arrives at the same time as the gold, giving time to combine the final product.

The complete solution:

I've run into a weird issue on Oil of Vitriol... this solution works:

t,9,13;t,7,13;c,11,11;b,3,10;m,3,13,270,3,rwwwwcldou;m,11,13,0,1,clluuoddrr;m,1,10,90,2,clorwwwwww;m,4,6,90,3,crrddouull;m,2,4,0,2,dwwwwcuuod;

But this one does not, even though they create the same thing:

t,9,13;t,7,13;c,11,11;b,3,10;m,3,13,270,3,rwwwwcldou;m,11,13,0,1,clluuoddrr;m,1,10,90,2,clorwwwwww;m,4,6,90,3,crrddouull;m,2,4,0,2,cuuoddwwww;

Can anyone tell why one works and one doesn't, even though the only difference is in timing and not what's created / placed into the goal circle? Something's definitely wrong, but I'm not sure if it's with my understanding of the game, or a bug in the game itself.

Thanks, all...

In re Mark Josef's 'timing' problem.

I'm going to guess that it's a bug, and even what the bug is....what you've done, is you've created a situation where two molecules are in the goal area at the same time, one partially, and one fully, even though the partial one is still held by the manipulator, at the moment the real one is dropped, and the partial one is 'hiding' the real one. (i.e. the code stops searching for a valid drop if it detects an invalid molecule (in this case, invalid because it hasn't been dropped yet, and it's not wholly in the goal area) earlier in the search of the goal area)

The workaround is fairly easy. Just make sure that the only molecule in the goal circle when you drop your completed molecule is the completed molecule.

A lot of people have talked about optimizing for the overall number of cycles, but nobody seems to be talking about optimizing the delivery loop except as subordinate to overall goal of reducing cycles for game's goal of five molecules.

This solution, once it gets started, delivers a molecule to the goal every six cycles. There are a couple of Black Powder solutions posted that use fewer overall cycles for five molecules, but unless I've missed one somewhere, there's no other Black Powder solution that delivers on a six cycle loop. For five molecules, the long lead time on this solution loses the speed race; for fifty molecules, it's probably the fastest posted so far.

Even so, I doubt it's optimized on any other spec. I imagine more elegant 6-cycle solutions are possible. (Perhaps even a 4?) The tangle of arms around the final assembly area is fun to watch -- though getting the timing to work took forever.

Level XV Plenty of extra arms I could combine. Lazy.

I just finished XV/???? and then started reading comments and trying other people's designs. Wow, it's cool to see all the comments here and try other people's designs. One thing that never once occurred to me was to assemble, then paint! That would have made XV a lot easier.

Here's my Philosopher's Stone. 87 clocks. I like the final steps, where two half-stones are snapped together then whirled into the right place just before they collide with two earlier stages:

And here's my XV/????? stage. Very complicated because I create each molecule before I assemble! I do get away with just one glyph of projection that makes two moons and a gold every 14 clocks. This is fairly fast, also completing in 87 clocks (like my stone):

10, because you need ten white atoms (three for the compound itself and seven to upgrade the three metal atoms).

I'm pretty sure that the theorethical best DLS for lvl 15 is 6.

As you said, you need 10 white atoms, and 3 metal atoms. You have 2 mercury generators and 1 lead generator. Each generator can produce a new atom every 2 cycles. So in 6 cycles you can get a maximum of 3 metal and 12 white atoms, witch is enough.

Also I'd like to gratulate fuzzyface for his Philosopher stone solution. My solution doesen't always work, sometimes there's a collision, sometimes not. His solutin is much cleaner.

No, it's 10.

As you said, each generator can produce a new atom every 2 cycles. So each can produce 3 new atoms every 6 cycles. So after 6 cycles, you can have 3 metal atoms and 6 white atoms, which is not enough. Only after 10 cycles can you have 10 white atoms.

Only 5 manipulators and 90 symbols though slow at 97 cycles. I have a feeling it should be possible with 4 manipulators as I came close to this but gave up in the end. Well pleased with this solution.

I was able to get my Gold solution to 77 symbols and 36 cycles. It produces 2 atoms every 10 cycles. (or 1 every 5 cycles)

This should create a big box in level 1:

b,4,9;m,5,12,270,1,uodwwwwc;m,2,9,0,2,dwwwcu1o;m,7,9,90,2,crd2oluw;

Unfortunatly bad collision detection ruins it after 12 atoms.

These are my solutions up to Level XII.

Level I - Aqua Vitae (6 Symbols, 28 Cycles):

m,7,8,90,3,crrorr;

Level II - Sal Ammoniac (18 Symbols, 31 Cycles):

Cerulean, very nice, however i hoped you would still be able to complete the level at the end, by only moving one atom into the destination field after each other.

I just wonder as a new puzzle challange, how big is the max. number of cycles you can do for level 1, but still completing at some point?

Is there a limit? Since you got a limited amount of manipulators, and a limited amount of instructions per manipulator.

Without the hack of atoms being chained together and then seperated into the dest. are, I would have been sure, yes there is a maximum amount of time you can take to pass it around. But with chaining I'm not so sure anymore. Can it be done an arbritary large number? When yes, how?

Here is My Solution to Level XIII - Elixir of Life (208 Symbols, 176 Cycles, 14 Arms, 5 Glyphs):

Poker you'r right. I don't know how I've arrived at 6 cycles, but now I feel silly.

Anyways I've managed to do Lvl 14 with a DLS of 4! It looks pretty silly, but I kinda like it, and it gets the job done.
Lvl XIII - Elixir of Life - DLS: 4 (44c)

Now I'm starting to think, that maybe the last two levels are possible at max speed.

LEVEL VIV Philosophers Stone

I start making a code key of the 4 elements. Using a method, I used for black powder. Then I use a knitting machine to make the shape. After that the shape goes to glyph of duplication, and after the painting its up to the goal.
Longest iteration is 48 then 18, 12 and 6.

16 arms 4 glyph 159 symbols and 271 rounds

This is an awesome game! Even my non-programmer wife got into it. She solved levels 1 and 2, and then helped me solve the last level (level 15).

P.S. Why is everyone posting their solutions to level 14, the Philosopher's Stone, and saying it is the "last level"? Level 15, ????????, is the last level.

January 6, 2009 3:59 AM

this game is fantastic.

Protip:

Synchronize everything, not just in movements but in number of programming entries.

I managed to do Level I - Agua Vitae with 3 Symbols and another with 14 cycles. here it is:

3 Symbols (54 Cycles):

14 Cycles (37 Symbols):

Does it not do that for you? It should complete at cycle 323.

no the last corner of atoms crashes, This is one of the glitches of the game. Sometimes when things go very tight, sometimes they clash and sometimes they don't.

Alternative Level II - Sal Ammoniac using Baron Topper's idea:

Awesome! I have been playing this game casually for a few days now, and I realized I never even checked the comments. Very impressed by the stuff people are posting here, really pushing the game to the limits. I am only up to XI, but I was kind of glad to see my IX Aqua Regia doesn't look too bad. I am pretty unhappy with the last arm but I like the rest.

if you look at these, they may appear really silly, and maybe long-winded, but I am the LEAST technically-minded person I know, so I am personally really proud, and thought I'd share them!!!

I liked the idea of making an extreamly slow solution. Here is what I came up with:
Lvl I - Aqua Vitae - 85703c (did not check)

d,11,8;c,12,12;m,1,12,0,1,locrowwc;m,3,10,180,1,roclowwwwc;m,3,6,90,1,locrowwwwwwc;m,5,8,270,1,roclowwwwwwwwc;m,3,14,0,1,locroc;m,12,10,90,1,wwwwwwwwwwclluodjw;m,12,4,90,2,cudruowwwwwwwcdlo;m,10,12,180,2,crolcrolcrodrrjw;m,10,5,90,3,wwcrolcrolcroddljw;m,6,9,0,3,wwwwwwwwwwwwcloljd;m,9,12,180,1,wwwwwwclluodrjw;m,7,10,270,1,roclowwwwwwwwwwc;m,9,8,90,1,lrowwwwwwwwwwwwwwc;m,7,9,90,2,wwwwwwwwwwclodrrjw;m,7,14,270,1,wwculwdorjw;

I don't know how fast is the game exactily, but if one cycle takes one second, it would take almost an entire day for it to finish. I tryed to verify this, but it always got messed up because of lag.

This was a hard one, due to the space limitations. Lots of near collisions. Couldn't get a centered delivery though.

I love this game, too. I never realized I had an inner robotics engineer until LightBots and then this one.

One major beef, though it seems small: The "rotate clockwise/counterclockwise" arrows should be slightly rounded. They're "true" only at 12 o'clock, and I constantly place the wrong one just because my brain is considering them at a different point on the circumference.

Again, though, I love it!

Level XV/????????

I found a solution for XV in 73 ticks. Can that be improved?

It uses the shortest possible cycle time, which is 10, though it takes 33 ticks to complete the first molecule. Can that long first lag be shortened? Maybe, but I find it very hard to make adjustments in this solution which took much effort to find. The solution has many near misses.

The machine looks very messy and busy (22 arms!) which may be unavoidable when you shorten the cycle: there is less that each arm can do, so you must move the atoms around more to other arms and other assembly sites -- which became very difficult to fit in, the more arms I added!

I am mistaken, wppb above did it with only 11 arms in his "not-so-efficient" solution which may take a long time to complete but gets the prize for minimality of moving parts and symbols.

Level XV/???????? in 70 ticks

Eureka! Taking some inspiration from the other solutions above, I improved my last speedy design, using only 20 arms and 175 symbols, and the same minimal cycle of 10...

Though there is the inelegancy of one "waste product" mercury and one arm that does nothing but pull it out of the way and then freeze.

Notice the "assembly line" queue of gold atoms, with three visible at once, and the need to stretch out the paths of the silver atoms through the machine, just so that their queues are equally long.

The earliest stages of my assembly lines, that supply gold, silver, and mercury to the rest, are unchanged, but I rearranged the other glyphs so that certain single arms can accomplish much more assembly work before relaying stuff along, even with the short cycle.

I am much more satisfied with this effort.

Fixed some silly waste in the last design. Two fewer arms, 18 fewer symbols (at 158), same time to complete.
