Tonypa is back with a new puzzle game and this one will surely give your grey matter a work out. In the spirit of Web-based riddle games, Tercessrebmun (or Secret Numbers) is a Flash game in which you must figure out the password for each of the game's 30 levels. Each level presents a series of characters from which you must derive meaning and clues that point to a single numeric answer. Enter your answer in the space provided (by replacing the "CODE?" text) using positive integers only and no other symbols. Some are straightforward and some are definitely not, but all solutions can be derived using logic and ingenuity. Wikipedia may even help with a few of them.

This game is best played in small groups of people, like the one we had in the site's IRC channel over the weekend as we worked through most of the levels in the game. Tony even showed up to give us a few helpful hints as we played, so don't be afraid to ask for a hint or two in the comments! Or come visit our IRC channel for some real-time assistance!

Do you have time for this?

And waiting backwards?

Solution:

The first two lines refer to the hands of a clock and the directions they face at a given time

Long hand up. Small hand east. 3 o'clock.

From everything?

Solution:

Take each letter in the clue back one.

TICKSTONEWDAY, or the Ticks until a new day(midnight).

Some numbers aren't what they seem

If a number isn't a number, then maybe it's just separating others.

Or even telling you how big the separation is?

Maybe this is like a previous question

What's the key here?

or perhaps keys... again.

Solution:

Most of the 2's and 3's are delimiters of ASCII identifiers. The Code is 53-49-50-45-99-111-115-40-50-42-112-105-41

512-cos(2*pi) = 512-1 = 511

66-504-372-968-46-423-968

Hints:

Where do you find Hello, and numbers?

Still having trouble? Want to use a lifeline? Phone a friend perhaps?

Not in this country, though.

Solution:

The numbers are international telephone country codes.

The country id's are TH-HN-EE-OM-SE-LI-OM

The first letters are THEOSLO

But Norway (Oslo) isn't the right code.

But there is a country called Lesotho.

The country code of Lesotho is 266.

NiNetyNiNe miNus oNe (6)
seveN aNd teN (3)
NiNeteeN miNus seveNteeN (6)

28-30

Game Clue:

421 247 253 61 721 792 89 972
WHERE -II

Hints:

Where? Where what?!

What does II mean?

Where are the 2s?

In each number?

Solution:

In 421, the 2 is in position 2. In 247 the 2 is in position 1. In 61, there is no 2, so 0. Continue like that.
The sequence is 21102303.

29-30

Game Clue:

THE JULY SUN CAUSED
A FRAGMENT OF BLACK MOON WAX
TO OOZE ON THE VELVET
(QUOTE 10-14)

Hints:

There's something missing from the text

Or rather two things

That aren't in 17-30's clue.

Solution:

The missing letters are P and I, or PI

Quote the 10th-14thdecimal places of pi

30-30

Game Clue:

UL. DLDLULU. RUL. DLD. RD.
XAXXXXBXXXXXCXDXEFXGXXXXXXXHXIJX
XKLMXXXXXXXNOPRXSXTUXXXXVXXXXWY.

Hints:

See how they run.

With 64 letters in the last two lines, including the period.

Or, thanks to the clue, should I say 8x8?

An 8x8 maze for the mice to run in?

So what's the second line then?

Up Down Left Right?

Don't forget the mice are blind

Solution:

Running the mice with each instruction until they hit a wall/letter, starting from the period, you get B E A S T

How do you represent Beast as a number?

Or perhaps the Number of the Beast? The answer is 666.

yay first comment! level 3 doesnt make sense

Yes it does :) think cross-word puzzle. I'm on level 5 and have been for about 10 minutes.

Level 3:

Look at the first letters of each row

yay second comment, level four makes less sense

@ Andy

Look at the first letter of each sentence.

Any level 6 help, anyone?

For level 6:

Think Roman Numerals

Any help with level 7?

December 3, 2007 5:23 PM

@ Rydash, think Caesae and then think Level 3

hints for level 5, yes?

i agree with hi

i got past levels one through six:

1:

pretty straightforward: 10

2:

again, pretty obvious: 2

3:

if you look at the first letter of each line, it spells out: 7

4:

just read it backwards, and it says "one less than a hundred" or: 99

5:

for this one, i just figured out how many tuesdays there were in each month and then multiplied that by the number of months in a year to get: 48

6:

a bit trickier, the first letter of each word spells out MMVIII, or, in roman numerals: 2008

i'm really stuck on level seven though

Stuck on level 9 atm.

Hints:
Level 1:

Level 2:

Straightforward instruction following

Level 3:

Look down.

Level 4:

Look back.

Level 5:

Combination of two tactics you already used.

Level 6:

What empire was Caesar part of?

Level 7:

"Bin" is a key word.

Level 8:

The meaning is important.

Solutions:
Level 1:

Add the numbers to get: 10

Level 2:

The level number is: 2

Level 3:

Read down the first letter of each line to get "seven": 7

Level 4:

Read backwards to get "one less than a hundred": 99

Level 5:

Read the first letter of each word backwards to get "eight times six": 48

Level 6:

Read the first letter of each word as Roman numerals to get MMVIII: 2008

Level 7:

"Bin" refers to "binary" numbers. Read o as 0 and I as 1 to get the binary number 1010011: 83

Level 8:

Count the number of spaces in the poem: 13

@Endyr for level 5

Think one of the previous levels

first letters...

...backwards.
easy init ;).

I beat level 5, but I don't really have the logic on it down...

My methodology was the number of months times the day of the week that Tuesday represents. Don't really understand the other clues.

Help on 5! Help!

thanks noyb! but now im stuck on level 9!

comments on new games pop up faster than popcorn!

Edit: got it. Stuck on nine.

@Endyr, Ben & Max for level 5

I got it from the last line.
Take the first letters of each word...

...and you get EIGHT TIMES SIX.
easy init ;).

"Tony even showed up to give us a few necessary hints as we played"

I hope you're not trying to tell us that any hints from the author is neccessary to proceed in this game?

for level 9

alexander the great died in 323 bc but it doesnt seem to help much

Sorry, bioLarzen, my bad using the word "necessary". The hint was only necessary for *us* to proceed. Your mileage may vary. ;)

sloth - you're on the right track, but

there's more to a 'date' than just the year. ;)

He died on june tenth, 6/10

Anyone knows what those ranges bottom right of each level (like "6-30" for level 6 for example) mean? I thought the code lies within that range but with level 6 it became clear that it is not so... But then what is it?

Ben - actually, that's not likely to help sloth. xD

bioLarzen - "6-30" means level 6 out of 30.

@ bioLarzen:

It's the level that you're on out of 30.

Oh, fool me... Of course they mean "actual level/total number of levels"

I thought they are kind of range because they are placed directly under "Hints and spoilers" - of course I thought it's kind of a hint...

Maybe that would be useful to make it clearer, Tony - if you're reading this.

I like the game a lot altho probably im not gonna get too far since im playing alone.

bioLarzen, I believe that's the current level (6, in your case) followed by the total number of levels (30).

Thanx, Jay :)

It stands for level 6 out of 30 or whatever you are on

Jay,
my mileage is rather "incheage" :)))

Gosh, this seems exactly like playing Funny Farm alone... Impossible, but that's the fun part of it, huh? :DDD

Ive been stuck on level 9

with all these date of death hints Im still not finding the answer...

wah...

bioLarzen, you may need that level box on one of the levels (hint).

has anyone goten past 9 yet?

But no, seriously, what's up with Level 9?

There are 4 separate clues for #9.

The text is there to confuse you, but it's also there to contain vital information.

Trode: Yes, on 12.

10:

It can't open any doors.

11:

The numbers are right there on the page.

Im stuck on 11.

December 3, 2007 6:32 PM

Teeheehee! Thanks Jay for the hint; I don't know why I never though of it earlier.

date, two, may

YAY i finall beat level nine

there are three number sets

the hand stands for something

SOLUTION:

25323, date=2 hand=5 death=323

December 3, 2007 6:36 PM

I got level 9... don't think much.. seek trough the text, but don't mind with the meaning.. there are 2 clues besides alexander death.. in fact.. thats almost irrelevant... ;)

looks like my logic was messed up but i got the right answer :)

looks like my logic was messed up but i got the right answer :)

For those stuck on 11:

I can't believe you made it past level 6. :p

are the three clues:

date

,

two

, and

before great alexander is gone

?

If they are, I guess Im just not pulling them together...

never mind on last comment, I got it

Oops, my hint may have been misleading, because there are really 4 clues for 9. I'll fix my other comment.

disregard my previous comment about being stuck on level 3

Ben, I thought that

the 5 came from the word "may" (as in, the month), but I guess the hand works too :)

.

Anyway, I'm stuck on 12 right now.

December 3, 2007 6:52 PM

I can't figure out level 10 :S

Im also stuck on 12.

NovaPulsar
Solution for 10

the number of keys on a piano

for 12, maybe its

the number of possible phrases you can create with the given words

just guessing :D

ok NovaPulsar

on level 10 disregard the AND between PI and A NO to form the word PIANO and find how many keys there are on a PIANO

December 3, 2007 7:03 PM

:D Thanks. i feel dumb now ;)

This is a general question:

Do any of the answers use a decimal?

I know Tonypa made it to where you cant type in any letters besides the ones in "CODE?", but it is possible to type a period/decimal.

PS im stuck on 10, I see "PI" 3.14... and "and a no" and a number...
but the arent seeming to help.

12: Samuel Finley Breese ... could help you with that, if he was still alive... ;)

I finally figured out number 10!!

It means keys as in "Keyboard" And you can also see in the text that there is the word "Piano".
The keyboard of the piano. How many keys are on the keyboard? 88. The answer is 88 ^^

does twelve have anything to with what daniel said and that you can type periods and dashes as well as normal numbers?

On Level 12: well, if you...

take the first symbol, dot or dash, of each of the nine words in Morse code, you get .-...-.--, which is Morse code for LAW, which is Dewey Decimal 340 in the library.

So the answer is 340, except that of course it isn't. I'd already thought of the Samuel Finley Breeze thing, but it wasn't obvious what to do with that...

I mentioned in the review above that all answers are "positive integers only and (include) no other symbols."

11?

Hrrm.... King of the People turns into a number how?

December 3, 2007 7:18 PM

@Ben for Level 12. The answer is just numbers, but you're on the right track.

What can be dashes and dots in Level 12?

11!

Ok, I finally got it.
Sometimes the medium is the message (or in this case, the hint).

@ Nobody

For level 11,

use the same technique you did for level 6, just go a little farther

That is,

convert more than just the last letters of the word into roman numerals

December 3, 2007 7:30 PM

anyone have a hint for level 13?

i do not know how to figure out number 11. so if anyone would be kind enough to give me a clue i would appreciate it.

Hmm, i can't seem to get past level 11.

December 3, 2007 7:45 PM

I'm also stuck on 12.
So the dots are "."? But what about the dashes? It should be obvious, but I'm a bit slow today.

Unfortunately, geniusadvice, a lot of things can be.

Vowels/Consonants. Words/periods. Short words / long words. Short vowels / long vowels...and that one's promising, because that makes the middle line ..-. . . -, which spells FEET. But the other lines come out as gibberish.

You really have to be willing to be creative, ingenious even, when thinking of ways to solve these puzzles.

For 12:

the dots are obvious, yes, and can you see anything at all in the text that could represent dashes?

December 3, 2007 8:03 PM

11:

"Rex Populi" is the state motto of Arkansas. 25th state, entered the Union in 1836.

What language is it?

Thanks jay, that hint made it very obvious how to solve level 12.

ok for number 12 i feel really off...

i found a morse code translator and put in the whole thing and got
.. / ..-. .. -. -.. / .. -. / .-.. .. -... .-. .- .-. -.-- .-.-.- / .. .-.. .-.. ..- ... - .-. .- - . -.. .-.-.- / -... --- --- -.- ... .-.-.- / .-- --- .-. -- ... .-.-.- / . .- - .-.-.- / .--. .- --. . ... .-.-.- / -. ..- -- -... . .-. ... .-.-.- / ... --- ... .-.-.- / -.. ..- ... - .-.-.- / -.-. .... .- .. .-.
which i'm assuming is way off
also if the periods are the dots...then the spaces could be the dashes? even with that knowledge i'm completely stumped on how to turn that into something with the dewey dec. system

Bah help me

Teal,

forget the Dewey decimal system. Focus on where the dashes are in the text.

13 - still working on this one, but maybe this will help

each line has three sets of nine digits, none of which is repeated within each set

this gave me replacements for the missing numbers, (though not necessarily the order) but they didn't appear to work. after that, i am stuck.
possibly even less relevant

this would make the bottom "283" which is a prime number

i'm still feeling like i'm really missing something...it's like on the tip of my brain but i just can't think of it

if the spaces are the dashes...then i just get a crap load of a's or n's ...
and ---. isn't anything
blah i'm about to give up

I'm way stuck on 13 can anyone help

for 12

keep in mind the fact that the answer is numbers. if you're looking for morse code its probably going to be morse code numbers

for 11:
the dashes are

I

agh, i'm still confused on 12!

December 3, 2007 9:07 PM

I finally got level 12

The dashes might not be facing horizontally

@benfunke:

Have you seen any other puzzles with digits 1-9 not repeating in, say,

rows, columns, or 3x3 boxes? That would have a middle row?

I'm on thirteen and stuck, is anyone that far?

For level 13:

Count the number of characters. Now how can you divide the text?

I'm just waiting for somebody to come up to level 15 and help me out. :(

Jay, I'm so glad you posted this!!

For 13

Think Sudoku

December 3, 2007 9:45 PM

My level 9 doesn't work. I've looked at spoilers and tried to copy and paste. it just doesn't work.

December 3, 2007 9:47 PM

Have another hint for Level 13, ThemePark or anyone else?

For number 13:

benfunke is on the right track.

1.

each line has three sets of nine digits, none of which is repeated within each set

2.

notice that the answer box accepts a maximum of 20 characters. This means that you can't type in the entire "middle row"

3.

"middle" is the key concept here

level 12: (Warning:major spoiler)

take the "i" for dash.

Stuck on 13

December 3, 2007 10:15 PM

Think I'm about to get Level 13...

Tonypa, you magnificent trickster, I think it's a sudoku.
Cripes, I hate sudoku. :) But I'm too hooked on this game not to do it anyhow and see what happens. :)

14? anyone

14

Ascii Chart

15

16 Any ideas?

For number 14

Hint 1:

the numbers are arbitrary place holders

Hint 2:

Think of eight-letter mathematical functions

Anybody have some insight on #17?

All I know is that that phrase has all the letters in it.

I can't get passed 7!!!

December 4, 2007 12:12 AM

16 is definitely baffling.
PS. <3 Tonypa

December 4, 2007 12:16 AM

Found this for 16 in Wiki:

Patch Tuesday is the second Tuesday of every month when Microsoft releases patches for their products. Some system administrators call this day Black Tuesday.

Can anyone tell me if it's related?

#25 question

Tonypa - should we be looking at 311X?
Thanks

i need help on level 2

December 6, 2007 9:33 PM

Ditto-ing Theme Park

Oups!
Thank you soo much!

...is #17 really so easy that no one has asked for help yet?

On #22: I've got

The whole "Prime Number Thirty" thing.

It seems pretty apparent that it's not

anything to do with the prime number in the thirties, hence the singular thirty.

This leads me to believe that

it means the thirtIETH prime, which if my math is right is 101

, but that's not working either. Any insights?

Did you know that the phrase given includes all letters of the alphabet?

Use the numbers below to decipher a clue using the letters in the phrase above.

Have you tried counting from the beginning of the phrase?

Have you tried using the numbers as offsets?

Need help with a set of hints and worked solution for 17-30

Ahaha, I get it now! Thanks Jay, master_flea!

Seeing as 30 could be still trouble, here are some more hints:

You dont have to convert mice word to numbers, the hint in there was mICE, meaning slippery ground.

Now if the blind mouse would move in the maze, it would probably bump into walls.

All letters except X are counted as walls.

Move until there is dot in instructions, then read the last letter you hit.

I was just about to write and say that with those hints it still didn't work, when something dawned on me.

The period counts as a wall too, even though you start on it.

So with that in mind, I finally got through the game. :D

December 7, 2007 5:42 AM

Thanks Themepark.

The starting point being a wall was throwing me off as well.
Nice game all in all. A little too vague as to the methodology in some cases. I would never have made it through without the hints. Good work guys.

Because of the walls, my mice have headache!!

but all of them and me go through the level and through the game too!! yeah!
Do you plan the "Season 2" of Secret numbers?

#30

BEAI ! it doesn't make sense to me !
2519, 1259 are nok
I'm wrong with my table ?

so close to the end !

Youhou !

3 days on it !

Thanks Tonypa !

Well with all the hints surrounding 30, I was finally able to finish the game. Thanks Tonypa for creating such an exhilarating mental coaster ride. Version 2 on its way? Maybe? If you can somehow manage to pull together the creative talents of the JIG community, then I can see nothing but a bigger, better, much more engaging experience that is Tercessrebmun 2. Or shall it be 2 Tercessrebmun? =)

With the last hints about 30 I finally did it.
It was very fun. Thank you for that game Tonypa !

Thank you Tonypa! I loved this game and really enjoyed it. Can't wait for another :)

#30

beast

yesterday, now what?

#30: what am I missing?!
I'm failing at the very last step. I followed all hints given and get 4 letters (two of which are the same) and no fifth letter (or as I did: define the starting '.' as a valid result).

Concretely, I get as a result:

BEBU.

with that:

I tried all year-numbers (birth, death, disco hit) of the argentinian composer (to no avail) and there is also a romanian river by that name (which leaves me completely clueless)... There seems to be no anagram either...

To make the confusion perfect:

It seems to me, that there are a few obsolete moving instructions having the mouse bumping into the maze's "boundary-walls" just for fun. Or is the mouse supposed to do some "pacman-warping-thing" appearing at the opposite side of the maze?!

*sigh*, please kindly guide this lost soul out of its maze...

Tiri: #30
The first and second letters are good, but you seems to have turn in the wrong direction for the third.

#30 to Tiri

My own mice have had big headache before I found the "exit".. euh.. the correct worde

Seems your mice have taken a wrong way..

your

the word to find is longer as yours

oups! who is waiting "Season 2" of "secret numbers" :)

with BEAI, from many hours, I don't know what to do !
Any idea ?

#30 for cpr

Your

1336 military time

but none of my answers work.....

#31:
Ok so I figured out that "OVER" is a clue to

invert the characters in the second line (namely: ROT-13)

And the resulting characters appear to be yet another

anagram, since I can see the word "multiply" in there

But I can't make head or tail of the rest of it. As far as I can tell, there just aren't enough

vowels to complete the anagram

I don't know what to do with the word "GAME", so I suspect that has something to do with what I'm missing. Perhaps I'm completely on the wrong track?

Help?

#31: Nevermind, I figured it out. I had just messed up the rot-13 formula in my spreadsheet.
For those who are still hopelessly stuck, the code is:

Can someone help me out on lvl 20? I read that it says

but I don't understand how to solve the equation.

Great game Tonypa and Jay. Thanks.

#30: thank you all guys for the advice, I got it right now =)

DON'T move in maze like this:

Duh! What I did wrong is to execute every set of moving instruction from the starting 'dot' and I did fancy stuff like displacing the mouse of the 'dot'-field in order to start it going in order to move; obviously my 5th mouse was extremely dumb...(I guess, I still assumed there where 8 mice, of which for some strange reason only 5 got to move/escape/whatever with their own set of moving instruction)

#20 for zappy4

you have it..

maybe

3x - 9y IS (or =) 27 9 = y

oups

Nobody,

What are you yapping about #31?

31-30? pit it out Tonypa

BTW Thanks for the great fun!!! I still think 23 was GOOFEY!!

Kathy

zappy4, in 20:

3x-9y=27 (the equals comes from fIShing)
y=9
replace y into first

and find x

#21 for hinystuffya

1:36 is wrong

#29

I understand what

the missing letters are

I just don't understand

what is supposed to be done now, entering the meaning of the missing letters does not seem to be the answer. Is all the text meaningless, or just the letters?

bh:

I've posted Walkthroughs including step by step hints and solutionsa for levels 1 through 19 above. I'll be working on others as I can, but I'm moving this weekend, so I may not be able to post them for a few days.

BTW, Guys! I'm stuck on 27. I've converted the numbers to

TH-HN-EE-OM-SE-LI-OM

But I can't get a decent

anagram

Help?

Thanks for the game Tonypa, I enjoyed it, however it should come with a disclaimer that

if it were any more obscure it would be impossible to beat.

@master_flea

you got the codes right, too many letters though, just the first letter.

then if you still are stuck

the anagram is obscure, the answer is a code

Where are the 2s?

In each number?

Solution:

In 421, the 2 is in position 2. In 247 the 2 is in position 1. In 61, there is no 2, so 0. Continue like that.
The sequence is 21102303.

29-30

Game Clue:

THE JULY SUN CAUSED
A FRAGMENT OF BLACK MOON WAX
TO OOZE ON THE VELVET
(QUOTE 10-14)

Hints:

There's something missing from the text

Or rather two things

That aren't in 17-30's clue.

Solution:

The missing letters are P and I, or PI

Quote the 10th-14thdecimal places of pi

30-30

Game Clue:

EIGHT BLIND MICE
UL. DLDLULU. RUL. DLD.

I am so lost on 17!! I thought that if I

counted the letter I would spell out words or anangrams

but that didn't work because or the zero! Any help?

jae113, 0 means you count same letter twice.

thank you, master_flea and tonypa! I got it now. :)

Congrats on your new game tonypa!
I like how it is numeric/logic one side and poetry/proze at the other side. I came to level10, I probably play the rest with the walkthrough in my hand.

Wow, and I guess you exceeded the amount of comments on a game here on JIG ever, or at least in the shortest time-span.

I'm having to rely on the walkthrough way more than I had hoped, but it's a great game! I always love Tonypa's games!

Master_flea, you have this in your walkthrough

27-30

The country code of Lesotho is 266.

NiNetyNiNe miNus oNe (6)
seveN aNd teN (3)
NiNeteeN miNus seveNteeN (6)

however, this is wrong, as the last two spoilers go to a different question.

Most puzzels are pretty amazing! But some are just plain impossible and have nothing to do with anything! Also, im just bitter that i cant get any of them.

Here's the answer for 29 ;

2 things are missing; P & I. (pi)
Quote te 10th-14-th decimal of pi.
If you press pi on your calculator, you get 3.14 blabla.
Takethe 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14thnumber aftr the comma.

58979.

number 4 is

does anyone know number 5?

In my opinion, Tonypa ALWAYS does great games. They're always unique, creative, and force you to think outside the box.

However, that has its downside: Sometimes, like with this game, a lot of levels are really obscure in figuring out the direction to go in.
For example, Level 19

You are presented with lines of words with NO indication towards any words. Alright, the letters don't seem to jumble up into any numbers. Alright, so what is going on? Apparently, you have to figure out the last line is a command. Then you have to figure out that said command means remove certain letters from the puzzle. Now, the last part of the puzzle seems more the style of this numbers game, but it is very obscure in reaching that point.

My point is I love games that are hard enough to desire
a walkthrough and you try your best to go without one, but obscurity that forces you into a guide only makes me feel dumb.
Nevertheless, Tonypa has delivered another great time waster.
