JohnBEver wanted a strategy game that was just complex enough to be interesting but straightforward enough to play on a coffee break? Hoplite has you covered. The casual strategy/roguelike game from Magma Fortress is built around turn-based movement on a hexagonal grid. Using just a few basic pieces of equipment, you'll venture through randomly generated worlds as you quest for epic loot ripped from the pages of Greek mythology. All without having to memorize an instruction manual beforehand!

A snappy tutorial introduces you to the basics of Hoplite in less than two minutes. Your goal for each level is to make it to the exit unscathed. You do this by attacking enemies using melee hits or a spear toss, shoving enemies back with your shield, and leaping over obstacles with your sandals. Everything has an energy limit set up, forcing you to conserve moves and play a careful game of cat and mouse with your foes. Do you go for the upgrade-granting altar, do you attack that wizard, or do you just hit the exit as quickly as you can? Take your time and think, this isn't a game about rash decisions!

NOTE: This game was played and reviewed on the Nexus 4. Game was available in the North American market at the time of publication, but may not be available in other territories. Please see individual app market pages for purchasing info.

If this is anything like Hell Tour it should be awesome http://jayisgames.com/archives/2009/12/hell_tour.php

Actually downloaded it and played it, that is now that I currently have an android device in testing to play it on.

I found it to be okay. With more play I could probably get better at it. It seemed like the auto-lunge did not always work so I got hit a lot making it a bit frustrating. I like the game, but didn't love it. It is really that one mechanic that did it in for me.

Morning SHA.

Of course I am. You should have my email address via my account, if not tell me where to send one for more in depth talk about this topic.

I love this game. By far the best Android game I have ever played.

@SHA The lunge certainly always works. The rules of this game are as rigid as chess' rules, a bug like that would kill the game. Maybe you tried lunging without your spear? Certain rules are not well described and that is the game's weakest point. A good puzzle game lives and dies by how clear its rules are.

Another rule that is essential and is not well explained (if at all) is that enemies will not attack you if it results in another enemy getting harmed. That includes: the wizards' beam goes through everything, so it won't attack you if even behind you there's an enemy. The archer will not shoot through enemies. The bombers will not throw a bomb adjacent to another enemy. This is pretty essential, as one of the main strategies of the game is to spare key enemies and use them as protection.

My only complaint is that once you master the game there is little else to do. You can keep advancing the levels but they don't offer anything new. The challenges/achievements can keep you entertained a little longer.
