Battle at Sea

BryanAll hands to your mobile devices! The mateys at Agile Fusion bring the fun and nostalgia of the board game Battleship to your fingertips with Battle at Sea. The game has recently come to port for NOOK and Kindle Fire tablets for those of you who want to sink ships before browsing through John Grisham novels. The set-up is simple: battle against your device or a real person in a turn-based naval competition!

Battle at SeaMaybe it's been a while since you dusted off that old Battleship game, so here's a little refresher. Players position five different ships on a 10x10 grid, then take turns trying to guess their location, one shot at a time. Choose a grid square and then fire away. If you miss, a blue-centered circle is shown, but if you hit, a red-centered circle appears. By logical deduction, you can eventually suss out where your opponent's ships are located and sink every last one of them. The first player to lose all of their ships is, well, the loser!

The constant back and forth of exchanged cannon shots can be a wee bit boring after a while, so Battle at Sea offers Salvo Mode for a quicker experience. Here, your enemy is at the mercy of five shots per turn, speeding things up quite a bit. No matter which mode you choose, though, Battle at Sea is great for quick, casual sessions. Sporting a rustic style of art that makes it easy on your eye (the one that isn't wearing a patch, obviously) is a nice bonus for an otherwise simple, satisfying game!

NOTE: This game was played and reviewed on a NOOK Tablet. Game was available in the North American market at the time of publication, but may not be available in other territories. Please see individual app market pages for purchasing info.

Is this different from Battleship in any substantial way? If not, why does it earn a full review?

[Maybe because it's on a mobile device, and it's fun? -Jay]
